This is definitely the worst book I have read this season. I never thought that someone could write an entire book detailing four blocks in a graph in myriad of was!

This book add so little value that it does not deserve 256 pages! The questions at the end of each chapter add insult to the injury, literally mocking you! They are extremely self evident and anyone with a pinch of brain will figure that out themselves.

To sum up the book, digital will disrupt and here are four business models, for digital. I was appalled at the lack of imagination by the authors, and the lack of effort into the book. The examples and case studies are so shallow that, after a while you would start asking yourself, "why did I pick up this book?". This book is so uninteresting that i had fallen asleep many times reading this book!

Very generic and almost zero value add, from these page. I hoped to learn some innovative business models, instead the authors thrust the age old, Supplier, Retailer, Omni Channel and Ecosystem. These models existed since the trading was born. There is literally nothing new in this book.

I had to read this book for the last class of my MBA (master of business administration) degree. I don't recommend it to anyone who isn't into digital age business. Reading it kind of felt like I was in some kind of academic S&M relationship. I was paying someone to torture me by making me not only read this book, but write a 10 page paper about it. I still have the scars, lol.

The only plus was that the book was short.

Learned about this book while listening to a podcast. Weill and Woerner, both MIT research scientists, provide case studies and insight for leaders who recognize the need to transform their organizations to survive. Anyone interested in navigating the coming wave of automation should read this. The impact of growing technologies like IoT reveal some areas where voice and digital assistants will impact organizations in the very near future. With 10k baby boomers leaving the workforce daily, there will be a speed of innovation as younger leadership moves in to take these openings. Will be interesting to see how organizations adapt.

Digital is all pervasive. Everyone knows the threat and opportunities created by Digital. Few industries are immune to the digital juggernaut. The question then is “digital transformation is not about if, but of when and how”. The book attempts to help the reader answer it and does it quite well.

Most CxO and board members would agree on the “when” aspect of digital transformation. The difficult question is “how”. There is no one magic formula. That is because each industry is fundamentally different from other. What Digital means to a manufacturing industry is different to what it means to a bank or retail organisation. However, there are questions that each enterprise must answer – truthfully – irrespective of their industry. These are fundamental questions on their perceived threats, opportunities, value chains and ecosystems, operating model, differentiation factors, etc. Like a lot of good self-help literature, this book surfaces those “obvious” and deep-seated questions that must be answered to understand your baseline before attempting a change as big as digital transformation.

To help you answer, the book provides numerous examples of how other organisations dealt with these questions and then, by following up with appropriate actions, helped transform themselves in tune with the digital economy.

The book proposes charting your enterprise on a 2x2 grid, similar to a SWOT analysis, with knowledge about your end customer (KYC) on one side and Business Design on the other, resulting in 4 quadrants representing supplier focussed, omni-channel, modular producer and eco-system driver. This helps visualise where your organisational energy is currently spent and whether that is where you want to remain or move to a different quadrant.

Although a small book, it covers a lot of ground, including technologies made available by digital such as IoT and mobile and their impact on all organisations, to organisational traits such as courage, commitment and leadership in the enterprise to undergo digital transformation.

The structure of the book is very simple – one chapter per question. This is followed by a concluding chapter that summarises everything. Each chapter discusses case studies and anecdotes from various enterprises around the globe. At the end of each chapter are a set of further self-assessment questionnaires to help you better understand your organisation.

Although my summarisation looks more focussed on understanding your “baseline”, the examples and use cases cited in the book are on the enterprises’ “target” state and challenges encountered during their journey to digital transformation.

Each chapter has numerous references to literature taken from business studies carried out by other organisations such as PwC, Accenture, KPMG and many more from MIT Centre of Information Systems Research. There are numerous other sources including organisations that participated in author research. A lot of information, including excerpts of the chapters, are available in audio at MIT CISR website.

This is an excellent book and a must read for senior executives and CxOs. A lot of research and hard work has gone into it.

This probing and practical book by Peter Weill and Stephanie Woerner is based on 5 years study at the MIT Center for Information Systems Research. The book provides a framework that has been field-tested globally with a dosen senior management teams. The authors found that there are four distinct business models, each with different capabilities: 1) Supplier, 2) Omni-channel, 3) Modular Producer and 4) Ecosystem Driver. The framework helps companies clarify where they are currently in an increasingly digital business landscape and highlights what is needed to move to an higher-value digital business model. In the book, there are some suprring examples to me. I had the audiobook option via our local public library. It is an interesting read. Maybe, the book is meant for senior managements of a company, but I believe every working professional can benefit from it.

This book gives a good guidance for a company to embark on a fascinating journey of digital transformation. I really like the assessments in every end of the chapters. They give us concrete ideas on the current status of our organizations in the face of digital transformation and help us understand what to do about it.

Great book about digital transformation. With concise models and practical guidance on how to assess current capabilities, determine possible implementation routes and up/re-skilling considerations.

Anyone with the question “How is my business getting ready for the future?” should read this.

Helpful to understand what digital transformation means

The book gives a good starting point to understand the process of digitalization. I would have like it to be a bit more detailed in the quantitative results of the transformation and the causal inference between digital rating and financial performance.

Great framework for assessing an organization’s digital readiness and mindset. Also super helpful in thinking through competitive advantage: Platform, client experience, and content are king!

Will be fastly outdated and the examples might look nice, they are hardly applicable to any other organisation

A "how to" book for managing a company transition to digital. I didn't immediately understand the four business models, so it was good that the first few chapters described them from different angles, with self-assessment forms to place your business.

The rest of the book guides you through improving and changing your digital business model. I especially liked the list of capabilities for moving "up and to the right" on pages 146-147, because I recognized those as what was happening when I was at Netflix. That was 2006-2009, when Netflix was launching streaming.

Even if your business is already digital and successful, this is a useful read. Success always hides flaws, and going through the self-assessments will spot those before they become problems.
