Really just using this as a place holder for PURPLE HYACINTH by Ephemerys and Sophism. The webtoon is totally not finished yet, however it is totally worth reading and you don't need to have an account! if you love mysteries and slow burn romance between an assassin and a detective read it. do it.

Not gonna put my whole review on here (putting it on my ig story instead) because I don't feel like it's appropriate given that this isn't actually the webtoon lmaoo but like everyone I'll pretend it is just so i can add towards my reading goal, but safe to say:

I read a webtoon?!? And I think I liked it ?!?

A law enforcer and the mostly deadly assassin to ever assassin (The Purple Hyacinth) have to team up in order to dismantle The Phantom Scythe. Aka an anonymous group of terrorists, thieves, and killers supposedly fighting for a better world.

And everyone’s hot.

Guess I’ll start the next season?

____________

Update: read seasons 2 and 3. I NEED MORE.

*filler fake book with the same name because the actual webtoon isn’t on goodreads yet*

i read this back in september and IT WAS SO GOOD. kept me up at 5 am, made me cry, made me laugh…literally so so so entretaining. this degree of enemies to lovers is what the world NEEEDS not “he always ignored me so he must hate me blablabla”. ok, went on a little unrelated tangent there but yes! this webtoon.

best/favorite webtoon i’ve read so far. i don’t typically tend to really be a fan of protagonists that are all full of justice and duty, but PH does it incredibly well! Lauren has flaws, doubts herself, and honestly has you in a grip cheering for her. Then, there’s Kieran. HAHAHHAHAHAHA. Don’t get me started on him because this review would have no end. It honestly is ridiculous how much I like his character (and his loo-), anyway. Their relationship is so interesting and suspenseful!

But…the very best part is that this webtoon isn’t over >_< there’s so much yet to see and discover. we don’t even really know what will happen with lauren and kieran.

p.s. the whole bomb arc was OUTSTANDING. amazing fiction.

p.s.s. this webtoon did make me discover that i highly dislike listening to music simultaneous to reading (especially visual formats).

So I guess we are pretending that this is the webtoon 🤭

Best story I’ve read in a long time, amazing characters, the art is simply stunning and the music ? I normally don’t bother with listening to the musics in webtoons but they are so good at choosing the right songs that it just makes the whole thing better.

I am absolutely in love and I’m so happy we are getting S3.

-Pretending this is the webtoon like everyone else since it seems like the webtoon was deleted by goodreads-

6th reread - It's been a year now since purple hyacinth was updated. I still remember every Tuesday I would wake up so excited to read the next episode, especially during the factory arc. This webtoon is one of the very few where I actually spent money on the fast pass but even with that I was left with a sense of trepidation and anxiety not knowing what would happen next. I would always wait for the next weeks episode eagerly.

I really hope Sophism makes a smooth and recovery and I'd honestly be willing to give my spine to her for her to continue writing and drawing this masterpiece. Every time I reread, even if I know exactly what happens next and can quote stuff and predict what characters are going to say next, I'm left in a sense of awe and wonder at just how amazingly put together eveything is. I cry, I get mad and I laugh.

This is honestly the best thing I've read and there's no doubt about. Everything is so exquisite and mesmerising that I can't put this down for the life of me. Even with exam season approaching, l couldn't stop myself from reading this and putting my revision on the side.

5th reread - I don't think it's normal to say that I love this webtoon more than anything else in the world. The way that my heart physically hurts whenever I think about this.

*spoilers ahead*

There are no words to describe just how much I love this webtoon. 5 stars aren't enough to rate this masterpiece. It's the best piece of literature I've ever read, and I recommend it to anyone who would listen to me.

This is like my third time reading this, and every single time, I get goosebumps. The amount of tears I've shed because of this, from being happy, scared, relieved, and just from outright sadness and anxiety. Nothing has ever made me feel emotions more intense, and honestly, I would do anything to read it for the first time once again.

The art style is downright gorgeous, and I've taken so many screenshots of this that I can't even count them. What's even better is that it got so much better with each episode. I've been a fan of this since, in 2019, and I've never read anything better. Every time I read it, it gets better and better, and I see so many plot points that I had previously forgotten or missed out completely. The amount of care and detail that went into this is absolutely unreal.

The premise of this is also so interesting. A police officer, previously a detective that was demoted due to an incident, and the most ruthless and fearful assassin the city has ever known. The Purple Hyacinth. This webtoon has honestly made them my favourite flower. Everyone thinks that Kieran leaves these flowers as a threat to the royals, but really, there's just so much more to it. Anyways, these two end up meeting each other one night, and Kieran, the Purple Hyacinth, decides to spare her life and instead invites her to a bridge the next day. Lauren, our officer, is rightfully sceptical once she finds out that the man that she made a deal with is none other than the Purple Hyacinth. Lauren is also able to detect lies, and together, she and Kieran plan to find out who the leader of the Phantom Scythe is. The PS is a fearful organisation full of criminals that has honourable claims that want to help the lower classes and bring down nobility.

If you're not already hooked by this point, I don't know what would. Now, moving on to our characters.

Lauren.

10 years ago, there was a tragedy, the Allendale Train Station Tragedy. ATST for short. During this tragedy that was orchestrated by the Phantom Scythe, Lauren had a friend she truly really cared about. While Lauren got out before the explosion, the friend was still there, and the only thing that Lauren found was his hat. Lauren doesn't believe that he died, so for 10 years, she has been trying to find out what happened to her friend. She hasn't gotten very far as the PS is always one step ahead of the police so she has no other choice but to become partners with Kieran. Lauren is honestly a really interesting character. She often puts on a mask, pretending that everything is okay when nothing really is. I feel like Kieran really sees through that, and I feel like Lauren is the realest with Kieran. One of the many reasons why I ship Lauki.

Lauren and Kieran become known as Lune, and they try to take down the PS themselves.

Kieran.

He was trained since he was young through torture to be an assassin. He was with another person that I think he was trying to protect, and I feel like that person might have been Lauren's friend, Dylan. I don't think he's alive anymore but I think Kieran knew him and that's why he knows the meaning of Purple Hyacinths since Dylan was the son of a gardener and knew a lot about flowers, a way of asking for forgiveness, and he also has some medical knowledge and Dylan wanted to be a doctor when he grew up so perhaps kieran learned from Dylan.

Although Kieran is always putting on a mask of being this sarcastic arrogant character, it's really just that. A mask. He's just a poor man who was shaped and forced into being something that he's not, and he has no other choices. He often tries to push Lauren away, but that's just because he's scared of letting anyone in, and honestly, I love him so much. I'd do anything for him. He's such a sweetheart deep down and honestly deserves so much better. As the webtoon progresses, we can see him letting Lauren in, but it's truly a slow progress. It's such a slowburn that the only romantic thing that Kieran and Lauren have done in a 150 episodes is Kieran caressing Lauren's face while he admits of being scared shitless.

The Purple Hyacinth also never uses guns, but in the season 2 Finale, he uses a gun and kills with it. He doesn't want to be a monster, and he thinks that using guns is too impersonal, so he uses a sword to remind himself he's human and not a monster.

Honestly, the season 2 finale was absolutely stunning. One thing that I absolutely love is that for most of the episodes, there's always music. This was especially important for the season 2 finale, where there was so much tension and anxiety, and the music truly elevated all of that. Reading those episodes at 2 in the morning with the music on full blast with headphones on was an experience truly. Sometimes I dream about those scenes, and sometimes I'll just be sitting down and that music will be constantly playing in my mind. My heart raced when I was reading, and my palms were sweaty. That's just how amazing the art and dialogue were. Truly stunning.

Kym.

She is one of Lauren's friends, and she's not nobility like her but rather just a normal middle-class woman. She's this comedic character, but she also has a sad past and often times acts goofy to cover her sadness. We can truly see this after the season 2 finale where she had thought that she had lost Lauren, and it had brought back bad memories and trauma. She's also so smart. She was like one of the first people to guess that Lauren was Lune and she's so loyal.

Even though she was obligated to report Lauren, she never did, and even when she had the chance, she just let Lauren go. Honestly, such a strong and beautiful friendship. She always brings this sunshine to bad moments, and it's always there for her friends despite her own issues and I believe that to be something very admirable.

William.

He has all of the responsibility upon his shoulders. He has to be perfect all of the time and never make mistakes. His brother left him. His mother is dying and doesn't even realise its William is looking after her and instead calls him by his brothers name. His father couldn't give a shit about him and only wants him to be perfect and marry someone noble. He hasn't got a life really, and yet he always has this charming facade on. Honestly, everyone in this webtoon is wearing a mask because of their traumas.

Anyways, Will starts to lose it like any person would after so many years of just being perfect, and him being a lieutenant so young certainly doesn't help. And here we see Kym and Will together. I ship them so bad, and they're honestly so cute, and every time they're together, there's always this music that makes me tear up because they are so cute. They are so wholesome together, and honestly, William really needs someone as chaotic as kym to counteract his perfectionist habits.

Belladonna Davenport.

Where do I even start with her. First of all she's so fucking hot like I'd get on my knees and bark like a dog for her to just get a sliver of attention from her. Honestly wouldn't mind if she "accidentally" nicked me with her golder viper venom laced dagger. To Die by her hands would be an honor.

She seems like a character that doesn't give a crap about anything and she enjoys killing but I think that's just because she had no choice but to kill and over time she came to like it because she had to. She was lowerclass and had a shitty life before the PS and they saved her life which is why she thinks that she owes so much to them. She has a pact with Kieran since they seem to be old friends and they don't interfere with each others business. I like their friendship and although they are both flawed characters they are not that way just for fun. They have their reasons. Honestly I'm really curious to see more of Belladonna. Kieran and Bella are truly the same person in different font. They are so similar to each other.

I also love how this webtoon talks about real life issues. The PS might be a group of violent criminals but they weren't always that way. They were a peaceful organisation that got slaughtered and the Leader escaped that massacre. If the royals aren't listening to peaceful protests then the only way to go is violence and I can honestly understand the Leader in this regard. However, what I do not agree with it is the way they use children from Greychapel (an area where there's no money and it's full of criminals) to turn them into assassins. The means don't justify the end if you are actively harming the very people that you want to help. If they joined because they wanted to, then fine but people like Kieran were made slaves and then assassins and its not fair on them.

The royals as well I hate. Especially the Queen. Her only solution is to just slaughter the PS because her head is so far up her ass that she can't see her own people suffering and the king is just following her orders around. Even if the PS was murdered, their claims would still remain and killing them all wouldn't fix the root issue. All they have to do is fund areas like Greychapel but the nobles only care about themselves and aren't willing to do any of that. Honestly it's sad because governments in real life do the same thing and sometimes violence is required to make your voice heard.

I could honestly write for hours about this webtoon but I think this is already too long.

I've rambled so much in this review and it's probably the longest one I've ever written but I just love it so much and I always recommend it to my friends. Even though they haven't read it yet, I won't stop recommending it to them. I'll probably be rereading this again very soon because it's just that good.

Honestly, let's just assume this no-name book is THE comic: Purple Hyacinth...for now.
since...well...everyone seems to have done that lol.

This being my very first comic— and ngl, it was fun. I'm not complaining. Also, I know I'm late...like always (duh), however, I DON'T CARE.
Forgive me, dear novels. This is....hopefully just a phase. Again, sorry. D:

☑️Binge-worthy
☑️Action-packed
☑️Interesting Premise
☑️Maddening Momentum
☑️Freakishly Fun Characters
☑️Slow-slow-burn
☑️Perfect blend of humor & sarcasm
☑️Amicable (I didn't just use that word) authors (Seriously, when's the next season coming up!?!? Hope Soph gets better soon 🤞🏻)
☑️and...of course, the amazing artsy panels so well-matched with the music
ugghh 💀 that was way too many adjectives, wasn't it?

Coming to some not-so-great parts:
✔️...um, slightly predictable plot (reminded me of six of crows T_T, just sayin')
✔️ Isn't really as great with its so-called "jaw-dropping twists" , some were just unrealistic or too dramatic. Some loopholes, maybe...?
✔️Doesn't wrap up well like good ol' cozy mystery-thriller. It opens up way too many questions and too many possibilities, than trying to solve them. Ikik, it's not done 🙌🏻 sue me. The big conclusion/wrap-up may still be in the cards.
✔️I just...missed the words that make up an ordinary novel and unlike to the visuals in comics (it's a me issue)

I CANNOT WAIT FOR THE NEXT SEASON. I don't how the others managed, but for once I'm okay with the fact that I'm late maybe.

Typing in caps, reading comics...I guess I'm in adownward spiral. I repeat in vain this is just a phase. IT'LL PASS. BYE.
