***Full Review***

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Lady Magdalen's father has been imprisoned in the Tower and charged with treason against Queen Anne. Magdalen's step-mother is pregnant and even though she's shunned Magdalen for being a bastard, she begs her to go to London and plead for her father's case. Magdalen would do anything for her father so she takes off with her maid Agnes.
Commander Lord Aiden has leave from his ship for the first time in two years and plans to finally live life to the fullest at Whitehall. However, on his way there he comes across a Lady and her maid needing help.
Magdalen and Aiden have met before but court intrigues and war may keep them from their true destinies.

Second in the Lords of the Highlands series, The Highland Commander can be read as a standalone. When we are first introduced to Magdalen and Aiden they came off as gently sweet characters; they were a bit Garwood-esqu in their feel. Magdalen was the slightly outcast heroine because of her label as bastard but she had cultivated a role with the people of her town by running a hospital for battered women. Aiden is a second son of a duke and in the Royal Navy, is very young (early twenties), and the exact opposite of a rake. While we've seen the essence of Magdalen many times in romance, Aiden was sweetly different.

As the story went on I thought it lost some of its focus on Magdalen and Aiden together and instead kept hammering on Aiden's virginity. I wished the focus hadn't been on Aiden simply wanting to lose it and instead his growing attraction and affection for Magdalen for the sake of herself; missed more of an emotional bond. Don’t let Aiden’s lack of experience fool you though, towards the middle and end, sexual escapades are had. The court intrigue and Magdalen trying to find a way to free her father and later trying to work for her father lacked some details and progression that could have kept it from feeling like Magdalen only bemoaning her circumstances instead of making moves to change it.

There's a plethora of secondary characters, real and historical, that the author did a good job of incorporating that helped shaped the world and setting. The ending did seem extremely rushed and the fate and revealing of some characters lacked the emotional punch it was supposed to have because of the lack of previously laid groundwork. The first half was a bit slow while the ending was rushed as a jumble of ideas and story plots got thrown at the reader and wrapped up with perfect bows. Magdalen and Aiden were two very sweet characters but their story was lacking support.

Wondering if I read the same ARC as everyone else???

I had high hopes for this historical romance but the story was too jumbled, the plot too convoluted and I never connected with any of the characters.

The story is about Magdalen Keith, the illegitimate daughter of a Jacobite lord in 1700 Scotland. To make a long story short, everything that can go wrong, will go wrong for poor Maddie. And it all starts when she meets and falls in love with a Scottish second son and Navy lieutenant, Aiden Murray.

My main pet peeve was tweaked one too many times

It was hard to get behind such an MC - let alone root for these two to get together. Aidan gives weak excuses for pushing the h away, first because she is innocent and he is essentially just looking to sow some wild oats and isn't looking for anything more meaningful And I wish he hadn't reacted the way he does when he finds out Maddie is illegitimate. He makes her feel inferior to him and definitely not a legitimate choice for a bride. It was not his brightest moment. In all honesty, the more I think of this story, the more annoyed I get with this H!

Poor weak willed (dare I say, doormat even?) Maddie is your typical martyr virgin heroine. She is rejected by her father's legitimate family, ostracized by the rest of society for the circumstances of her birth and to top it all off, she is used by the only two men she has ever loved. Her ungrateful father uses her to spy at court and puts her life in danger and almost gets her killed (several times!) and then there's Aiden, he uses her body, easily disregards her feelings and never grovels for her forgiveness.

The whole story, she is humiliated, ridiculed, ignored, disrespected, rejected and abused. And time and time again she just takes it. She accepts the bad treatment and willfully puts herself in dangerous situations because she is trying to prove her helpfulness. I sympathized with her and felt bad for her but sometimes I really just want to slap some sense into her.

The story takes place during the Treaty of Union, when Scotland and England become a single state and the political unrest was palpable. From a historical stand point, the story was interesting, but it doesn't make up for the complete lack of romance. Thinking back on it all, the story actually left me a little depressed. There was nothing light or "feel good" about it. The most dominate feeling I have for this read is somber and sad.

A less wishy-washy H, an h with more backbone, humor and a bit more romance would have gone a long way for this story.

Could something else go wrong?

Well, I hate to say it but The Highland Commander was a bit depressing. I think the author has done an amazing job in keeping it as real and true to the times...and unfortunately, that's where she lost me. I read romance for the feel good feelings and those were few and far between. Everything that could go wrong goes wrong and it never seems to settle. I just wanted a little while where the couple had a chance to get to know each other without drama. There were abundant doses of lust between the characters, but not a lot of connection. We are told they stay up all night talking but I needed to experience a bit of it to confirm that their feelings were more than lust.

The heroine was doomed from the day she was born. She has the title of Lady but that won't really change the fact that she was born out of wedlock. From what I gathered, she was allowed the title even though she was a bas+ard. I haven't read a book where that happened before, so that was different and interesting. It seems she was more known for her title of bas+ard than Lady, unfortunately.

The hero is a spare who joins the Navy to make his own way through life, as most heirs spares are supposed to do. He is on a ship of fellow Scottish men who are now serving the Queen of England. There is complete unrest between England, Scotland and France, with a little tension happening in the colonies too. This is keeping them busy with little time for rest. His one chance at a break leads him to meet Lady Madelyn, and he is taken with her immediately.

Look, it wasn't all bad, it was just very serious. Both Aiden and Madelyn are pulled into scandals, intrigues, plots against the Queen and the scheming machinations of restless aristocrats. Poor Madelyn lands in hot water when she's accused of Treason, ends up in jail, then abducted, then escapes, then sent back to jail, then abducted, then safe...ish. Enough was enough, she had enough problems just getting past the situation of her birth.

It all ended up well but seemed to come good in the blink of an eye. If you love to read (what appears to be) a true representation of the times, and don't mind a wee bit of steam in your reads, The Highland Commander may be perfect for you.

Book Review For: The Highland Commander by Amy Jarecki 'The Highland Commander' by Amy Jarecki is book Two in the "Lords of the Highlands" series. This is the story of Lady Magdalen 'Maddie 'Keith and Aiden Murray. This can easily be a standalone book.Maddie is the illegitimate daughter of an Earl. Once her father married the wife did not want her in site and so she was raised with a ladies maid. Aiden is the second son of an Earl and with that being the case he has been grated freedom that an heir wouldn't have. So Aiden had joined the Scottish Naval to go forward with his life. There on a outing from the ship he happens to meet Maddie at a Masquerade ball that he is attending with his fellow workers. Maddie is allowed to attend since it is a Masquerade ball that her father is giving and it will be a chance to see him in an open setting. But her chance meeting with Aiden has left her breathless but they both know that they won't see each other again. About a year or so later Maddie is asked by her Step Mother to help her father who has been taken in for treason. Maddie who has never been useful or wanted by her Step Mother before now needs her it seems. Maddie goes forward to be the voice for her father but things just doesn't go very easily for her. Aiden happens to come to the aid of a women who he quick realizes it is Maddie from the Masquerade ball. Aiden takes her into his family home to give her a place to stay while she is trying to sort out this business with her father. Aiden and Maddie don't have a easy time of it but with Love it always wins in the end!"My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read."https://www.amazon.com/gp/profile/A2H... https://twitter.com/soapsrus68 https://www.facebook.com/RomanceBookR... http://booklikes.com/bloghttps://roma... https://www.tumblr.com/blog/romancebo...

The Highland Commander by Amy Jarecki

Second in the Lords of the Highlands series

4 stars

Lady Magdalen Keith is the illegitimate daughter of a Scottish earl. She doesn’t partake in balls and isn’t a fan of the fancier side of society. She prefers playing her harp or attending to patients at her hospital for battered women, but at the Hogmanay ceremony thrown by her father all of that changes. Navy lieutenant, Aiden Murray, isn’t expecting to be enticed by the girl at the Hogmanay ball or to spend months thinking about her while he sailing at sea. When Maddie goes to London to save her father’s head from Queen Anne’s noose, she isn’t expecting to see Aiden again. Neither of them is expecting the whirlwind Highland romance that flares between them, but goes against the propriety of London society. This story is fun… a LOT of fun, in my personal opinion. I prefer Highland historical romances and so this kind of story is right up my alley. It takes a lot of real history (Queen Anne, the supposed assignation attempt on her life, the rise of the Jacobite rebellion, and the real-life Marque of Tullibardine). I personally enjoyed the aspect of the plot relying on a lot of historical events, but also being fiction. It makes the story enjoyable, but also stays true to the atmosphere and political tensions of the time.

I can tell that Amy Jarecki has done a lot of research of this time period and it really shows. She has one of the strongest Scottish Highland romances when it comes to being accurate to the time period. I personally loved the opening Hogmanay chapters that set up how Maddie and Aiden meet. It was incredibly adorable. Jareki is good at writing steamy scenes, but there are a few laughable lines that are just weird. This novel is just a lot of fun and in comparison, to some HRs that I have read this one isn’t scared to show battle scenes or talk about blood, battles, and court politics. The romance in this story is definitely there and there is some great romantic tension. However, I do have a huge problem with the pacing of this story. Towards the ending, everything felt so rushed. This novel needed to be longer and to explain things with more depth when wrapping up some a huge plot. That’s my biggest problem with this novel and while it’s my only real complaint, it’s a big problem.

Whimsical Writing Scale: 4.25

“Maddie never cared to think about morbid endings. She preferred to look to the future.”

The main female character is Maddie, or Lady Magdalen. I really enjoyed her character. She had passions and hobbies. I loved that she had opened up a hospital for women who had been abused (primarily because of the rise of English soldiers raping women), but I wish that we had seen more of her in her element. We were told about the hospital and her love for it, but we never got to see her interact with attendants and it would’ve added another layer of depth to see that. I really enjoyed her passion for the harp. It’s always refreshing to see a character’s passion instead of just being told about it. Maddie’s harp plays a huge part in the story and her love for music is a huge part of her life. The last quarter of the book really challenges Maddie as a person and it was interesting to see the character’s personality being tested.

Kick-Butt Heroine Scale: 4.25

The main male character is Aiden. I love Aiden’s character because is a flirt, but he is very unaware of his flirtations with Maddie. He’s very inexperienced and goes against the trope of a rake that is experienced in the bedroom. Aiden is a virgin and Maddie is a virgin; they both have no clue what they are doing and are just kind of exploring each other and using some very explicit photos as a guide. It makes their romance fun and it’s refreshing to see two virgins falling in love instead of a virgin being paired up with a more experienced partner. Aiden is also a sweet talker. This book is full of one-liners that are so damn cute. We also get to see Aiden fight in a pirate battle. It was a great scene and it really added a layer to the story. Upped the ante and really catered to capturing what it was like to be on the sea during the early 1700s.

Swoon Worthy Scale: 4.5

The Villain- Well, this is rather tricky. There’s Lady Saxonhurst, who seems like a villain, but we never know if she really is. There’s Queen Anne, who is only a villain because the Scots do not love her and she is forcing Maddie’s father to be a prisoner, and eventually Maddie. Then there’s the whole plot at the end where Queen Anne is definitely not Maddie or Aiden’s favorite person. I don’t think there are any “villains”, just people on opposing sides of a political battle.

Villain Scale: 3

The characters are a lot of fun. There’s Agnes, the lady maid who has watched over Maddie her whole life, MacPherson, a naval officer who pretends to be a big player, Seaforth, an allay with a good heart, and the Earl Marischal, Maddie’s father who is thrown into the Tower for treason. The side characters are a lot fun, but the only one who really stood out to me and really made me like them was Agnes. Also, that big reveal on the last page about one of these characters was thrown completely out of left field and we had no closure on the issue. It kind of bugged me.

Character Scale: 3.5

Overall, this story is a lot of fun and I think that HR readers will enjoy this, particularly those who love Highlanders. My biggest problem lies with the rushed ending, but the last 25% was really intense and went places that most HRs shy away from. This is a great novel for fans of history, but also don’t mind some fiction in it.

Plotastic Scale: 4

Cover Thoughts: The guy is sexy, but if you look at him for too long his head looks photoshopped onto his body. I’m not complaining though. Give me all the sexy Highland men in kilts on covers.

Highland Commander is a brilliant and stunning work that Amy Jarecki has brought to us. In Highland Commander, we have a story of two people that meet at a masqued Scottish dance. They have a vibrant and stunning connection to each other, but Aiden--our delicious hero is a sea commander for England, even though he considers himself Scottish. Our heroine, Magdalen is the illegitimate daughter of a Scottish Earl. But later on, when Magdalen's father is accused of commiting treason and sent to London Tower, she must find a way to free him and so she looks to Aiden's help. But soon Madgalen's father won't be the only one at risk, and only with Aiden's help and love will they find a way to be free and together...

What a stunning story and I simply had a ball of fun with this book. Of course, Amy Jarecki never ceases to amaze me and she definitely wowed me into this book. What I admire about her is the historical details she puts into a story. I love learning about various periods of history especially the conflicts between the English and the Scots during this time. And she wrote it in such a way that pulls you back in time almost. The romance that builds between Aiden and Madgalen is passion and sweet and tender. It isn't an easy road for them however, and they really are tested here. But I loved seeing how devoted they are to each other and what they are willing to do to aid each other. Its not all roses and daises in this book. There is quite a bit of conflict in the story that tests this couple, but Amy Jarecki has the ability to pull me right into a story and I just don't want to let go of it.

I think what I truly loved most about this book was the mix of history and romance. Some might not prefer so much historic details, mostly because many authors don't use it like Amy Jarecki does. However, I am not one of those readers. I like the story to be realistic and true, and not sugar coated on the details. Because this time period is NOT an easy one. Its rough and hard, many injustices happened in this time especially toward the Scots. However I also felt that it wasn't too hard either, at least for myself. I really enjoyed seeing the way the history and the romance really worked well together in this one.

Overall a stunning and brilliant romance that will leave the reader breathless, stimulated and eager for more!!!

I went back and forth on my feelings for this one as I read it. I was looking forward to this story because I remembered Lord Murray from The Highland Duke as the young man with his nose in a book asking questions that would be considered by most to be inappropriate. He had promise to be a unique and interesting character.

Unfortunately, I felt like that initial introduction to his character was not very indicative of the character presented here in The Highland Commander.

On one hand, I appreciated that he was honorable and /mildly/ curious , and that he wasn't afraid to hold unpopular views , but that seemed to be the end of any similarities to the young man I expected.

Lady Magdalen was a decent h, born from unfortunate circumstances, she would never be considered an equal at court despite begin the daughter of an earl. She had been cast aside most of her life and that was what she expected from all those she met although she longed for more. She endures quite a bit in this story but I enjoyed her spirit.

I am very wishy washy on this one so I will leave my rating at 3 stars for now. I thoroughly enjoyed the first book in this series as well as others by this talented author so I will certainly read the next in the series and likely others by Amy Jarecki. Because Kilts.

The Highland Commander finds its inspiration in real life events surrounding the Jacobite uprisings of the early 1700s. I’ll admit that my knowledge of 18th Century Scottish politics is sadly lacking; however I know enough to understand the danger behind a Scotsman discussing the cause during this period.

Lord Aiden Murray and his fellow officers of the naval ship Royal Mary arrive at the Earl Marischal’s Hogmanay ball eager for entertainment and a chance to mingle with their countrymen after months at sea. His attention is almost immediately caught by a young woman dancing with another guest. Enthralled by her graceful moves and wide smile, Aiden cannot take his eyes off of her and cuts in. As they move across the floor Aiden finds himself charmed by the lady’s quick mind. Hoping to keep her attention a little longer Aiden steals her away from the ballroom for a moment alone.

The chance to attend the celebration at her father’s castle is a rare treat for Lady Magdalen Keith. As the Earl Marischal’s illegitimate daughter, Maddie was exiled from the family lands by her stepmother and the ball is an opportunity to flirt and dance with the soldiers before returning to her life outside the castle walls. Being recognized and supported by her father gives Maddie some clout within the community and independence from the life normally outlined for the daughter of an earl. Maddie has used that freedom to run a small hospital for women and provide comfort for those in need, but it doesn’t allow for much interaction with men of any kind, let alone those willing to marry a bastard. When a handsome officer cuts into her dance, Maddie is immediately captivated by his soulful eyes and his polite manners as compared to the other men there. Caught up in the excitement of the evening Maddie exchanges first names with the young man and allows him to kiss her, sparking something deep in her heart. It’s an incredible feeling that Maddie holds onto long after the crew of the Royal Mary has sailed away.

A little more than a month after the celebration, Maddie receives an unexpected visit from her stepmother with horrible news. The Earl Marischal is accused of plotting against Queen Anne in support of the exiled Prince Charles and is being held as a prisoner in London. Unable to travel because of her pregnancy, the countess begs Maddie to go to London to represent the family and plead the earl’s innocence to the Queen. It’s a task Maddie is completely unprepared for as she’s never left the small town of Stonehaven since her birth. Still, the thought of her father being punished or hanged is enough to overcome Maddie’s fears and she leaves Scotland without any idea of how to gain an audience with Her Majesty.

I haven't read a great Highlander book in FOREVER!! I can't wait!

UPDATE:

This one's hard to write and maintain my pledge to give you a spoiler-free review. Everything tends to be a new piece to a larger puzzle that I think you would much rather enjoy first hand the way the author intended rather than to be read in a review.

This was everything I hoped it would be! I was so excited to receive this book. I probably haven't read a Highlander book for years! The last one being the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon. I may be a bit odd in the fact that I LOVE a great historical romance...But I can't stand when there's too much history involved LOL. I want the era...the verbiage..the romance and danger, but without all the history lessons and dates (I mean seriously .. is there going to be a test?!)

Amy Jarecki totally delivered with this one. Not too much fluff and history but enough backstory for the era to transport us back in time, where sides are being chosen & war is inevitable.

Lady Magdalen Keith (Maddie) lives a pretty quiet life all things considering... That all changes when her father hosts a masquerade and Maddie meets a sexy, somewhat forward and completely intoxicating stranger. Fast forward a few months and Maddie finds herself crossing paths with her sexy stranger & trapped in court where her innocence, her father, and the life she's left behind in Scotland all stand in the balance.

It was literally the perfect beach read. Protagonists you love to love and an antagonist you love to hate which just made reading that much more pleasurable. It was an easy and fast past read that I truly enjoyed. A Few twists I didn't see coming, steamy romance to make you blush, and delightful moments that put a smile on my face. I did find the ending a bit rushed and wished for more but I still really enjoyed this book.

If you fancy a sweet historical romance with a hottie in a kilt grab Amy Jarecki The Highland Commander.

ARC provided by NetGalley and publisher for an honest review.

Rating 2.5 but rounded it up.

Lady Magdalen assists in running a hospital for abused woman. She's the illegitimate daughter of an Earl who loves and supports her but is not ever really acknowledged or part of the family due to his wife (her step-mother) wants nothing to do with Magdalen. Her one true friend and companion is her lady's maid Agnes. Magdalen tries to make the best of her life, she's a strong and secure in who she is, though society does ignore and snub her. She does feel cut off from those she loves and a lone at times.

Navy Lieutenant Aiden Murray is the second son of a Earl and happy to live his life serving on the ship with is friends and fellow shipmates. After two years being on a ship, he arrives at port and so he and his friends are invited and attend a ball/party. Aiden is a man of character and a gentleman. He decides that tonight he will have some fun and maybe it was time to find a woman to bed (Aiden is a virgin). It's Lady Magdalen's Father that is throwing the ball and this is where the two meet, share a dance and mutual attraction. But the war, politics and tensions that are rising between England, Scotland and France they find it will be difficult or close to impossible for anything to really develop.

But months later Lady Magdalen stepmother comes to her and ask to go to London and help rescue/save her Father, who's been accused of treason. Magdalen's stepmother is eight months pregnant and unable to travel. Lady Magdalen is more than happy to go help save her father and this is were Magdalen and Aiden meet again. The two are then immersed in intrigue, politics and find themselves in difficult and trying situations. They find the attractions just as strong and so it continues to evolve into a romance. Aiden and Magdalen both explore the physical side, which is new to both, as they also deal with lots (and I mean lots) of drama that comes their way.

This was information overload for me on all fronts. I liked the characters all right but found their "issues" to be over kill. From Aiden's virginity, which seemed almost like a constant negative, to Magdalen's occurring distress and getting into trouble. I found some of these issue to be it repetitive and oppressive at times. There was also a lot of history thrown in which I enjoyed and found informative, but also felt that it was taking away from the romance at times. The writing and flow was not to my personal liking, it seemed choppy and didn't transition smoothly to different scenes/conversations/dialogue. It might work for others but personally not for me.

Love on the run….

Oh, the Lords can be found everywhere! Scottish transplants Aiden and Maddie paths crossed again and again as they found themselves in the thick of things in London. They navigated political unrest and the stirrings of their own hearts with both a threat to their well-being…

Aiden was the second son so he followed his heart to the sea. He was a lieutenant in the navy though pigeonholed due to his noble status. He worked for his rank, his family name did not pay for it. If only people knew how he really felt about his family’s politics… Maddie was a rebel in her time though maybe not so much in Scotland where women were strong and independent. Wanting the love of her distant father, though, meant she would do what he wanted even if she didn’t like it.

I’m really enjoying this historical series where men are Scottish strong and so are the women they love. Their politics and their love had to remain secret but secrets never stay quiet for long! Good writing and intriguing characters made this another good read… ~Diane, 4 stars

ARC REVIEW

The Highland Commander book two of Amy Jarecki's Lords of the Highlands series. Unfortunately this book just kind of feel flat for me. The beginning started off really well and I liked the characters and I liked the plot but how it played out and the dialogue felt dry. It built up the story then it plateaued and nothing really happened until the end and even the ending was anti-climatic.

Magdalen Keith is the illegitimate daughter of a Scottish earl, she loves her father dearly but his wife wants no reminders of his past indiscretions so Maddie lives off away from her father and his wife, she fills her time working at the hospital tending to the battered women that come in. Her father has a yearly masquerade to celebrate an old pagan holiday this year Maddie dons her mask and is swept away by a charming Scottish naval lieutenant, sharing only their first names Maddie and Aiden and a kiss.

Sometime latter Maddie is visited by her stepmother who pleads with Maddie to go to London and convince the Queen to release her father, her stepmother would go herself but she is very pregnant and can't travel. In London Aiden and Maddie cross paths once again and with her father incarcerated his apartments have been seized by the crown. With nowhere else to go Aiden lets her stay in his family's suite of rooms. With the help of Aiden and another Scottish Lord Maddie is able to convince the Queen of her father's innocence but only if Maddie remains in London and plays the celtic harp for the Queen. Unfortunately Maddie's father tries to turn her into a spy. All the action happens in the last quarter of the book, something happens (I'm not telling) but Aiden saves Maddie and they go on the run and pretty much nothing goes right.

Overall, I really liked how it started and I really liked the characters, even when Aiden was acting like an idiot, but aside from that it just didn't do anything for me.

FINAL DECISION:  High adventure and yet thoughtful and long term relationship between two characters caught in real historical events.  I loved the intense historical reality of this book and the relationship between these two which is sweet.

THE STORY:  This book takes place in early 1700s with the rise of the intrigue between England and Scotland.  First Lieutenant Aiden Murray is glad to finally be off his navy ship after two years.  When he attends a masquerade, he is enchanted by the kiss of Lady Magdalen Keith. He cannot forget her, but when he discovers that she is illegitimate daughter of a treasonous Scottish earl (he is a Jacobite), he is torn between his duty and the woman he wants.  Magdalen is a quiet woman who would rather spend time helping abused women or playing her harp, but when her father is transported to the Tower of London, Magdalen arrives to save him.  There she meets Aiden again and much action ensues. The story is set between actual historical events with fictional main characters.

OPINION:  Readers who like historical romances which co-exist in real historical events (ala Outlander) will be pleased with this book.  The book focuses on the romance but the entire context of these characters is centered on real plots and people from history.  In the story, there is an intensity surrounding these characters that kept me reading.

The beginning of the story has a lot of set up and these characters take some time (over a year!) before the real action to bring them together starts.  I especially liked it as a contrast to the stories that seem to take place over a couple of days.

Aiden is a hero on the younger side (early 20s). A second son of a duke, he is making his own way in the world and trying to do it on his own merit -- even if people think that every accolade he gets is because of his father.  When he meets Magdalen, he is looking for sex not love and marriage, but he cannot seem to forget her.  Over the next year, they run into one another and their relationship progresses.  I especially liked Aiden who is honorable and ultimately willing to do everything for Magdalen and that makes him a pretty great hero in my book.

Magdalen is a woman who comes to rescue her father even though she has been forced aside by his marriage to her step-mother.  Illegitimate, she nonetheless honors her father and faces London and the Queen in order to save him.  She recognizes the reality of her situation and as she falls for Aiden, she is willing to risk a lot for him.

My favorite part of this book is how these younger people develop their relationship. They are curious and experimental in a way that you don't often get where the characters are clearly adults.  These are more "new adult" if this were a contemporary novel and thus they start their relationship less fully formed.  I really liked that aspect of this book.  Their relationship is different as they discover who they are -- with one another and also alone.

The slower pace of this book gives way to tremendous action in the last third of the book.  There is almost non-stop action, drama and quite a bit of angst.  There are a lot of twists and turns even until the very end of the book.  If I have any complaint it is that things are wrapped up so quickly that some of the resolution feels rushed.  Even on the last pages there is a new revelation that felt to me like it needed more time (or an epilogue) to settle.

I really liked this couple and this was a book that I could have read more chapters of and been even happier.  I want to know more about them and how their life develops.  I hope there is a glimpse of them in the third book in the series.

WORTH MENTIONING:  Double virgins.

CONNECTED BOOKS:  THE HIGHLAND COMMANDER is the second book in the Lords of the Highlands series.  While this book can be read as a standalone, it is connected to both the first book in the series and leaves something ready for the third.

STAR RATING:  I give this book 4 stars.

NOTE:  I received an ARC of this book via Netgalley in order to provide a review.  I was not required to write a positive review.  All opinions contained herein are my own. This review was originally posted on Top10RomanceBooks.com

Reviewed for Romancing the Readers Blog:
https://romancingthereaders.blogspot....

This is the first time I've read a book by Amy Jerecki. I'm always looking for new historical authors that I can add to the ones that I read. I didn't read The Highland Duke but wanted too. But as busy as I get with books I just hadn't fit it in.

Then The Highland Commander came up for review and I really wanted to try it and see if this was a author for me.

Going in I didn't know what to expect, I often don't read the blurb of books so that I can enjoy the story without learning to much. A old habit that has served me well. Right away I could tell that the author was going with a true feel for the times.

That didn't always sit right with me. It was very sad, depressing almost.

I really enjoyed the characters, Both Magdalen & Aiden stories are ones you wanted to know, if maybe in a slightly tone down version. At times I felt like I was given to much information. The story is very information driven.

Yes, that might seem weird to say but that's how I felt. I kinda reminded me of when I read Susan Johnson back in the day, the characters were secondary to the history in her books.

I'm not saying that happens in The Highland Commander, It's just reminded me of that. At times I really enjoyed the story but at others I kind of zoned out and just read. Something I don't like to do. For me the good characters wasn't enough.

I do believe that die-hard historical romance readers would really enjoy The Highland Commander. The author did do a wonderful job of painting a beautiful picture of the world she created. Her ability to do that saved the book for me. I really did enjoy her writing.

Treason and true love!

The tale of two innocents really with a whole lot of feelings and not really knowing what to do with them. Well that changes somewhat (thanks to the 'French' pamphlet) Captain!
Lady Magdalen Keith, the illegitimate daughter of a consummate Jacobite, the Earl Marischal of Scotland, has raced to London to try to free her father from the Tower. Although a representative of Aberdeenshire in the new British Parliament, the Earl was arrested after Prince James' abortive attempt to land his armada at the Firth of Forth.
Navy lieutenant Lord Aiden Murray is commander of a Scottish vessel that has been enfolded into the English navy. He's a virgin and wants to put that part of his life to rest. Aiden and Maddie originally meet at a masquerade at her father's castle in Stonehaven.
Between trying ro rescue Maddie's father, hiding their Jacobite leanings, and court intrigue in the guise of a delectable widowed countess, things become very active--almost too so.
A slow start, the story picked up and had some 'on the edge of your seat' moments as Aiden and Maddie flee into the highlands.

*I am voluntarily leaving a review for an uncorrected eARC provided to me by NetGalley and the publisher*

Magdalen aka Maddie is the illegitimate daughter of the Earl Marischal of Scotland, she meets Lord Aiden, the second son of the Duke of Atholl at a masked ball hosted by her father. Aiden is a first lieutenant in the navy and he, along with his shipmates are in port for one night. He is immediately drawn to Maddie. They share a kiss and part ways. Neither knows who the other is, as they only exchanged first names, but neither forgets the other.

Three months later, Maddie's estranged stepmother comes to her with news that her father has been arrested and is being held in London. The countess is heavy with child and cannot make the trip - she insists that Maddie goes in her place. Aiden is also in London, he has been granted a two week leave for the first time in almost two years and he has big plans for his time. They meet again when Aiden comes to Maddie's aid. They quickly realize their prior connection and Aiden offers to help Maddie. They work together to free her father and become much better "acquainted" but their blossoming love will be tested when Aiden is recalled to his ship early. Maddie remains in London and is able to have her father released - but there are conditions to the release and those conditions mean Maddie must stay in London too. The queen has "requested" that Maddie stay and play the harp for her and Maddie's father has "requested" that she spy on the queen for him. She is not happy with either scenario, but feels duty bound to comply.

Over a year has passed when Maddie learns that Aiden's ship was attacked and that they are in Portsmouth for repairs. She offers to go to Portsmouth to show the crown's support and to tend the wounded. When they meet on the ship, she is overjoyed that he is safe and he is stunned and elated to see her. They barely have any time together when Aiden is summoned to London by his father. His brother was killed in battle and Aiden is now the Marquis of Tullibardine and his father's sole heir. On the journey back to London, Maddie tries to offer Aiden comfort, but he is lost in his own grief. When he meets with his father, he is told that he needs to find a bride and his father forbids him to consider Maddie. Aiden at first refuses, but his father uses his mother's grief to bring him to heel. Maddie is hurt and confused by Aiden's dismissal - Aiden feels awful about the way he has been treating Maddie and tries to make amends - but Maddie isn't having it.

Aiden has another chance at redemption when Maddie is falsely accused of trying to assassinate the queen. He rescues her from certain death and they flee together. Maddie is still hurt and makes it perfectly clear that while she is grateful for his rescue - she will not be his whore. Aiden has a lot of groveling to do before these two can have a HEA.

Just when it seems like they have overcome the past and are committed to a future together - Ms. Jarecki throws in another twist and all hope for a swift HEA is shattered.

I loved this book, it has an epic feel to it and the love story is never lost, no matter how long they are parted or by the many obstacles thrown in their path. When they finally get their HEA it is beautiful and will stay with me for a long time. The book is well written, flows wonderfully, has some very well done warm love scenes, a lot of tense moments, a lot of surprising twists and turns and finally a spectacular ending with a very believable soul-mate type of love.

It is the second book in the series, but it is very loosely tied to the first and could easily be read as a stand alone title. I highly recommend this book and am looking forward to Reid's book, Highland Guardian!

Amy's highland romance historicals are always inventive and different. This one is delightful, sometimes hard to read and oh so satisfying.

This story is set during the tumultuous time in history where Scotland finds itself divided as to who the true ruler is. Henry VIII died without a living son as heir. The line of succession went to his sister, Margaret Tudor who married James IV of Scotland. Independent Scotland being incorporated into England didn't go well. And to sum up history, we have several male rules with no issue surviving and the line goes to the females. Then you mix in the Catholic/Protestant issues thanks to Henry VIII and Catholic Scotland and you have major conflict with the line of succession. This is a time of civil unrest.

Her heroine is an illegitimate daughter of an Earl. He claimed her and has supported her although since she was nine, not an active part of her life. He's married and the step-mother is not happy about the results of the previous relationship. Maddie is strong and independent having to make her own way in life and not really having a foot in society. She's been granted the title of Lady as a daughter of an Earl but has been snubbed all her life because of her birth. She find herself at the age of 22 hieing off to London to get her Da released from the Tower because he has been accused of treason for being in Edinburgh when the "Pretender", Catholic James Frances Edward Stuart crossed from being exiled in France in attempt to take the throne from Protestant Queen Ann Stuart (who has no children btw). Maddie's step-mother cannot make the trip as she's 8 month pregnant. She meets Commander Aiden Murray when she arrives, who met at a dance at her Da's castle a few months ago. He comes to the aid of a maiden in distress. Oh I love Aiden, ever the "guardian-protector" and one who cannot leave a lady in trouble even if he really doesn't want to get involved. I'm a sucker for guardian-protector heroes, sigh... The story progresses from there and oh what a journey.

This is a violent time in history and not to give any spoilers but Maddie spends her own time in London Tower that could be difficult for some readers. Amy handles it well in my opinion but the story is true to history and probably softened quite a bit. I loved seeing the struggle between these two trying NOT to fall in love. They are NOT right for each other according to society. I have to say I loved how Aiden came to her rescue.

Thank you Amy for allowing me the opportunity of reviewing this story for you. Awesome adventure once again!

I'm traveling and working in a remote location right now, so it took me forever to read this book. Like a whole week or more! That is an eternity when it comes to how fast I can normally get my books read. I find that it takes some of the enjoyment out of the story when I keep having to put it down and pick it back up. Luckily, Amy has written a captivating page turner full of attraction, political intrigue, and espionage!

Aiden Murray is our virginal hero - the second son of a duke and an officer in the royal navy for her majesty, Queen Anne. As a testosterone-filled young man, Aiden is somewhat obsessed with losing his pesky virginity, and finding a willing widow to tutor him in the amorous arts. He was not expecting to be captivated by a beautiful maiden at a masquerade. I thought Aiden and his pesky virginity were endearing, and I loved that he was a sometimes bumbling and awkward hero - but at other times he seemed like a seasoned seducer. Other than a couple of foolhardy decisions, Aiden was superb hero and honorable man.

Lady Magdalene Keith is the illegitimate daughter of an earl who has been ousted from her family by her new stepmother. Taking refuge in her work at a woman's hospital, Maddie would have never guessed the turn her life was about to take. When her father is arrested for treason, Maddie hies off to London to intercede on his behalf, and she gets caught up in court intrigue and familial pressure to act in a way beneficial to the Jacobite cause. All the while, Maddie is pining away for our dashing hero, Aiden. Maddie was a brave heroine, if sometimes a doormat for her family and some of the viperous ladies at court.

The relationship between Maddie and Aiden was more on the sweet side, though they did have a couple of sultry moments. The couple was not together for the entire book, which prevented the romance from feeling like instalove. So I felt like the romance unfolded nicely along with the pace of the plot conflict in the book.

I found that the court intrigue and drama was most interesting, and I really enjoyed the last third of the book when all the action was happening. I do wish the ending would not have been resolved so quickly, as I was hoping for more ceremony and consequence to our couple's plight. But overall, this was a great story - one that I hated having to put down repeatedly.

I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book that I received from the publisher, Forever Romance. This is a bit of a quickie review due to my aforementioned travel, so I hope it makes sense. The heat in Yuma and Tucson has fried my brain a bit so I'm not even making sense to myself presently. Happy reading!

Jarecki weaves a tale so descriptive of the time and place that it pulls you in and doesn't let you go until the end. You can just feel and cringe at the terror Maddie feels while she's imprisoned in Edinburgh Castle. I just love to read about these strong, resilient people, but I am so grateful that I don't actually live in that time.

Lady Magdalen Keith is the illegitimate daughter of a Scots Earl. While she has been acknowledged by her father, his wife will not allow her to mingle with the family. She has led most of her life separated from most other people except for Agnes, her ladies maid. She also runs and endows a hospital for women who have been abused and abandoned. She is a very admirable young lady, filled with spunk and intelligence, but feels inferior because she is illegitimate.

Navy Lieutenant Aiden Murray is the second son of a very powerful Duke. Aiden serves on an all Scots ship and is very unhappy that the Scots Navy is forced to merge with the English Navy. While his father's sentiments support the Whig party and agrees with the merge, Aiden leans more toward the Tori party.

Maddie and Aiden first meet at a masquerade ball hosted by her father. The ship is in port for only the one night, but they are both attracted to each other. They meet again in London when Maddie has come to try to rescue her her father who has been charged with treason. Maddie and Aiden have a wonderful week or so together and then he's off to sea and war for another year or so.

There is so much intrigue, spying, and backstabbing going on at court that it is unbelievable. Poor Maddie has to endure it because part of the agreement to free her father was that she remain at court as the harpist for the queen. Maddie is constantly ridiculed because of her birth status. Then, the unthinkable happens and Maddie is accused of trying to murder the Queen. Aiden helps her escape and the chase is on. They are pursued all across England and Scotland while friends are trying to prove Maddie's innocence.

It is an intense tale and the ending is so very, very perfect!

The Highland Commander is the second book in the Lord of the Highlands series by Amy Jarecki. It can easily be read as a stand alone novel.

Lady Magdalen Keith is the illegitimate daughter of an Earl. As a child he spent time with her, but once he married, his wife insisted that he have no contact with Maddie (Magdalen). An honorary title was given to her, but she was left to be brought up by her Lady's maid. Left to feel second best.

Aiden Murray, a Scottish Naval Officer knows all about being second best. He is the second son to an Earl. He doesn't resent that though, after all, it gives him far more freedom, but one thing he does resent is the fact that the Scottish Navy have been forced to join the English Navy to fight for Queen Anne. He has to keep his feelings to himself though or he could be faced with a charge of treason.

Maddie and Aiden meet during one of Aiden's very rare stops on land. Maddie's father is holding a Hogmanay masquerade ball, and all are invited. Maddie is attending because she gets to spend time with her father without anybody knowing, and Aiden is attending with some of the other sailors because they need to let their hair down after being so long at sea fighting. Masked or not, as soon as Maddie and Aiden see each other there is an instant sizzling attraction between them. An attraction that sees them sharing a secret kiss after spending some time together away from the hubbub of the party. They part only knowing each other's first names, and knowing that they will never meet again. Or so they think!

A year or so later Maddie's father is arrested and taken to the tower to await execution. He's been accused of treason. His wife, heavy with child, can't travel from Scotland to London to see him, or to fight his cause, so she beseeches Maddie to travel there to do all that she can. Of course Maddie agrees, despite it being novel that her step-mother who always wants her to be ignored, now is the one coming to her for help.

On arrival in London Maddie and her maid end up in strife immediately when the wheel comes off their hired carriage, and the cabbie just leaves them at the docks to fend for themselves. Aiden who is in London while his ship is in dock for repairs hears a lady in distress and being the gent that he is, he immediately goes to her aid. Imagine his shock when it comes to light during helping her, that she is the stunning woman he met at the masquerade ball, the one that he kissed. Immediately he offers for them to stay with him at his brother's residence in London, all perfectly above board of course. Having nowhere else to stay after finding out that the Queen has taken her father's residence in London from him, Maddie of course has to accept his offer.

From there the story escalates into the epitome of romance, passion, adventure, backstabbing, both metaphorically and physically at court, and accusations of attempted murder, and treason. Maddie must do all she can to try to help her father, but during that time she herself ends up being accused of treason and has to go on the run before being arrested. Of course Aiden runs with her, he can't let any harm befall her. The thrill of them being on the run had me holding my breath many times, and on a couple of occasions I was close to tears because of what happens. I can't say which occasions they were because I don't want to give spoilers. But suffice to say that the story is so beautifully written that you feel every emotion between our hero and heroine. The dramatic scenes and the more passionate love scenes were perfect. The fight between the Scottish and the English and the story of Queen Anne and her court were a pleasure to read too. There wasn't a dull moment in the book from beginning to end. And what an ending it was!! Did Maddie's father receive a pardon?? What of Maddie, is she able to prove her innocence, or will she and Aiden have to live on the run?

I can't recommend this book enough, and I cannot wait until the next book has been written.

This book is about Aiden Murray the second son of an Earl. He decided to make a life for himself since he was not an heir. So he joined the Scottish Naval . This is how he meets the heroine of the story Magdalen “Maddie” Keith. Maddie was born illegitimate, the child of an Earl. Sadly, when her father has decided to marry his new wife no longer wanted Maddie in site. As his new wife the countess Lady Mary, would not let her in as part of the family since she was sixteen. Therefore she was raised with the ladies maid. Her father was Jacobite supporter, William Keith, Earl Marischal of Scotland.

So Maddie decided to do something valuable with her life a. Proving her worth to society not the nobility! She did have a title Lady Magdalen Keith she didn't feel like an aristocrat or even a Lady for that matter. She worked at a hospital caring for abused women. The Scottish women suffered at the hands of the English. As they were manly rape victims.

Maddie is rarely allowed to attend fancy functions, but since her father is hosting it she is allowed to attend. She can feel her father's guilt not being able to spend more time together. Though this is not her scene she would rather be strumming her harp or assisting the abused women at the hospital.

Since it's a masquerade and no one will be the wiser of who she is. Her father encourages her to and dance he heart out and No One will be the wiser with a masque on. This is where she meets Aiden Murray for the first time. She won't see Aiden for another year. This time, a year later she is in dire straits. Even her father's wife who detests her asks for Maddie’s help. Of course Maddie being the good hearted soul that she is will do what she can to rescue her Jacobite father. Before Queen Ann can give him a death sentence where he'll be hanging from the gibbet!

The attraction only grows between these two and their innocence is just enchanting. As both are virgins so the passion scenes are absolutely heart-pulling.

Again you can feel Ms. Jarecki love of Scotland, as she weaves my favorite combination of true history into her fictional romance. Her research as well as her imagination and own spin is phenomenal! You can read as a stand alone book or in series order. This is the second book in series “Lords of the Highlands”, I absolutely loved “The Highland Commander”! It has all the elements Scottish historical readers love. From riveting pirate sword fights, political battles, betrayal, imprisonment, swoon worthy heroes making the heroine swoon, love, true factual history, and so much more!

I have been reading Ms. Jarecki novels for years as an independent author. Now so happy Forever, Grand Central Publishing has recognized Amy’s gifts and talent. I look forward to more factual history, weaved with her spin on a fictional romance.

As reviewed at Roses Are Blue: http://wp.me/p3QRh4-zB

Maddie and Aiden first meet when they’re both very young, she is twenty and he is twenty-two. Although Maddie is illegitimate, she is the daughter of an earl who acknowledges her, and is allowed the courtesy of using his last name and the title of Lady. Aiden is the second son of a duke, who has chosen a career in the Scottish navy, which has now come under control of the English queen. Their first brief meeting is at a dance hosted by Maddie’s father, and the two share a dance and a kiss before Aiden has to go back to his ship. Though it will be months before they meet again, neither forgets the other, even though they truly didn’t even know each other’s name. Over the course of the next two years, Maddie and Aiden are destined to meet time and again. Each meeting finds them becoming more captivated with the other, and they soon become almost-lovers, exploring their sexuality without actually risking conceiving a child.

The world around Maddie and Aiden is volatile, there are tensions between Scotland and England, Tories and Whigs, and even fathers and sons. When Maddie’s beloved father is accused of treason and taken to prison in London, Maddie follows in hopes of gaining an audience with the queen to plead her case. The queen is haughty and cagey with her answers, but she likes Maddie’s harp playing, and invites her to court to play every day. Maddie has to endure all the slings and arrows aimed at her for being a bastard, as well as the daughter of a possible traitor. When an unfortunate accident happens to the queen, one of Maddie’s harshest enemies is quick to point the blame at Maddie, causing her to now be accused of treason and imprisoned.

While I read THE HIGHLAND COMMANDER hoping for a satisfying romantic story, I was almost overwhelmed by how much more there is. Have no doubt that the romance and passion are strong and hot. Aiden is almost a superhero for so young a man. He’s honorable, strong, a fantastic fighter, and so loyal to Maddie, who is brave and strong in her own right. But aside from the question as to whether the son of a duke will actually marry a bastard, this couple must also overcome prejudice, imprisonment, treason, pirates, and highwaymen. If you enjoy your romance with a heavy dose of history, plenty of action, strong characters, and lots of steam, THE HIGHLAND COMMANDER may be just what you’re looking for.

Aiden and Maddie had met at a masqued ball on Hogmanay Eve a few months before, and Aiden had been immediately smitten with the lady in blue. First Lieutenant Aiden Murray had to board his ship, but he never forgot the fair maiden, neither did Lady Magdalen Keith forget the handsome Highlander, who according to her father would be a fine match. Maddie is the illegitimate, albeit acknowledged, daughter of William Keith, the Earl Marischal of Scotland and a Jacobite. Life went on uneventfully for a few months until Maddie learns that her father has been captured by the English and taken to the Tower of London for treason. Maddie’s stepmother who is with child, and who has always shunned her stepdaughter, begs her to travel to London. Maddie leaves right away with her faithful lady’s maid Agnes. No sooner are they on their way to Whitehall, that their carriage has an accident. Aiden also happened to be on his way to Whitehall, and he cannot believe his eyes! Maddie is also thrilled, but Aiden is with Her Majesty’s Navy: is Aiden friend or foe?

And Amy Jarecki has done it again! I fell in love right away with Aiden and Maddie; they are so young, exuberant, and utterly irresistible! Aiden is not a rake, he’s just about as innocent as Maddie, and how refreshing to have a charismatic hero who hasn’t tupped every willing female in sight. Ms. Jarecki’s feeling for the era is astounding, as she describes the sights and smells with loving clarity. Historical facts and fiction are skilfully blended as to make the story seamless and utterly believable in every way. Ms. Jarecki’s lavish descriptions and attention to detail make THE HIGHLAND COMMANDER a spellbinding tale of love and intrigue. Aiden is dashing, and a consummate sailor as well as a gentleman, and he doesn’t care if Maddie is a bastard, which nobody lets her forget. He might be the son of a Duke, but he loves her with all his heart. It was so lovely to see two young characters behaving as such, and I think it was the most realistic depiction of a young couple in a historical romance. I hope this does not constitute a spoiler, but Aiden is a virgin – for which I give Ms. Jarecki extra marks – and his attempts at acquiring some experience in the boudoir are very entertaining and good for a few laughs. But there is even more than a splendid romance in THE HIGHLAND COMMANDER: political machinations abound, danger lurks at every corner, and the adventures of Aiden and Maddie unfold at breakneck speed.

THE HIGHLAND COMMANDER has it all, in perfect dosage, and all of it superbly written. I already cannot wait for the next instalment in this series!

Please see all of my reviews on my blog at https://www.robinlovesreading.com.

Lady Magdalen Keith is indeed the daughter of an Earl in 1700s Scotland, yet she is illegitimate. She does her father’s bidding and attends a holiday masquerade ball to dance with soldiers in an effort to lift their spirits. One soldier in particular truly catches her attention, even through his mask.

Lord Aiden Murray is a navy lieutenant who has been away at see for several months. He sees a beautiful lass and they share a kiss. The kiss they share at the ball will be with them for a long time to come.

Aiden cannot stop thinking about Magdalen, but he can’t imagine ever seeing her again. Not only does he get that very opportunity, he discovers who she is, and that her father has been accused of treason and may very well be hanged. Aiden is willing to risk just about anything to help Magdalen get her father freed.

Quite a lot happens while Aiden seeks to help Magdalen, but circumstances change and her skills as a superior harpist changes things for her. Between that and the political climate, the intrigue and action reaches a high level. Meanwhile, Aiden and Magdalen throw caution to the wind as their relationship blossoms.

Amy Jarecki does a fantastic job of mixing true Scottish history with fiction and it is indeed fantastic mix. There are lots of twists and turns, drama, danger and lots of loving going on. The story has a riveting and dramatic conclusion.

This is the second book in the Lords of the Highland series. The other books that have been released are, The Highland Duke, The Highland Guardian and The Highland Chieftain. The Highland Renegade and The Highland Earl are due for publication in 2019.

I received this book from net galley for an honest review. Thank you!!

This novel was a great read. I enjoyed the plot and the characters. The story flowed well, even though it takes place over a couple of years. This story contains romance, action, and adventure.
Lady Magdalen Keith is the illegitimate daughter of a Scottish earl and many people are cruel to her. She runs a hospital to help those is need. She is a kind, caring, and compassionate person. She meets navy lieutenant Aiden Murray at a masked party her father is having. Aiden is the second son of a duke and is truly good man with morals. The moment their eyes meet, they can see no one else.Even when they do not see each other for months, their thoughts are of the other.
Aiden and Maddie meet again in London when her father is imprisoned for treason and he has leave. Maddie does everything she can to prove her father's innocence and Aiden helps her, even though it is against his father's political standings. Maddie then becomes the queen's harp player, but she really just wants to go home. Aiden has been recalled back to his ship and does not see Maddie again for over a year. Her father has been released with conditions and he gets Maddie to spy on the queen and report back to him "for the cause". When Aiden and Maddie meet again, their passion ignites once again. However, there are those who do not want them to be together and others who are cruel to Maddie due to her birth.
When Maddie is accused of a crime she did not commit, Aiden does everything he can to save her. He will prove her innocence and try to keep her out of prison. However, things do not always go according to plan and this will test their love beyond all measures.

I received an advanced reader copy from forever romance books for an honest review.

I'm a big fan of historical romance. I love the forbidden kisses, the tension between characters, the innocence, the smooth and intoxicating writing style. However, Amy Jarecki doesn't deliver the traditional historical romance you may love. The writing style is a tad bit more modern, throwing away the classic writing style you may be familiar with from Lisa Kleypas, Julia Quinn, etc.

The characters are more pronounced as well. There are plots under plots of the main one. Our main heroine, Maddie, is fierce and a temptress to our hero, Aiden. Aiden, an inexperienced lover, is taught the intricacies of sex by Maddie who is more experienced, and it sounds great but I don't feel like that's my thing. I kind of just want Aiden to know exactly what he's doing, how he does it, and not fumble around. But that's just my personal preference.

As for the story...it moved a bit too slow. Added with no sexual tension and longing, it was just...lame in a way? It was still an enjoyable read but it's definitely not my favourites.

Aiden Murray is the second son to Duke of Atholl. He is the first lieutenant and master of the watch aboard the Royal Mary, a queen’s vessel operated by Scottish sailors. Having spent time with many Scotsmen, Aiden’s becoming sympathetic to their plight, which puts him in direct opposition of his father.

Lady Magdalen Keith (Maddie) is the illegitimate daughter of the earl William Keith. He is a stanch Jacobite who is accused of treason against the Queen, sending Maddie to London to plea for his life. The gifted harpist unintentionally catches the eye of the Queen, pulling her into the unkind world of her court.

Maddie and Aiden are both wonderful characters. They are both young and innocent (yes, they are BOTH virgins!), but life hasn’t always been what they would like it to be. As the illegitimate child of an earl, Maddie dealt with disgust and disdain her entire life. Although her father recognizes her and gives her the title of Lady, she is shunned by peers and her own stepmother. And don’t get me started on how she’s treated once she gets to London. It’s all very realistic and definitely unromantic. Yet, she remains kind and hopeful. She does whatever is needed to help her father and country. She’s got a spine of steal and heart of gold.

Being the second son of a Scottish Duke isn’t all roses for Aiden either. He’s content to be the hidden son, commanding a ship of Scots and living his own life. But Maddie has him completely befuddled, and watching her personal battles with the Queen’s court only strengthen’s his resolve to live a live different from his father. This creates an engaging character, one I’m interested in following.

As much as I enjoyed following Maddie and Aiden as they grew closer and explored their sexual chemistry, I had a couple issues. First, I felt like The Highland Commander was a bit too political for my tastes. I liked that the author wove actual history into the story, but I wanted more focus on the characters and their romance! Second, I had serious concerns about the events that take place while Maddie captured (leave this spoiler-free). It was too severe, and I seriously doubt Maddie would have had the fortitude to survive and then flourish after her release.

In the end, I enjoyed The Highland Commander, even though I had a few issues. I give props to the author for her attempts to make the story realistic, and for attempting to address the mental and physical outfall of Maddie's incarceration and overall treatment. However, since I prefer my historical romances with a bit more fluff and less realism, I don’t know if I will continue the Lords of the Highlands series at this time.

My Rating: B- Liked It, but I had a few small issues

This second book in the interrelated Historical Romance series entitled Lords Of The Highlands. Introduces readers to Lady Magdalene Keith and titled Navel Officer, Aiden Murray.

Readers are set to be charmed from the outset. As Magdalene, the illegitimate, but well loved daughter of a Scottish Earl, meets Aiden. The two guests at a masquerade ball sponsored by the former's father. Where a night filled with dances and a shared kiss. Proves the stuff of memories that the two hold dear. Even as time and duty work in concert to part the two for well over a year.
When the self same time and duty see the two again brought together. This time as serving subjects of Queen Anne's court.

Aiden finds himself closer to his dream girl than ever. When he offers to shelter her in his father's apartments. While pleading her father's innocence of Jacobite leanings and treasonous actions. To the queen.

The first half of this book gives readers a bird's eye view of the machinations of courtly plotting. As seen through the very innocent eyes of Magdalene.
While Aiden struggles to balance his duties to court and country; with his need to solve a very personal problem.

This read has a tendency to be a rather serious one. All things considered.
With the youth and literal 'innocence' of both hero and heroine providing a welcome respite from the endless schemes surrounding the two.
That is until...
Not only death and duty, but class and still more suspicions surrounding an already beleaguered Magdalene threaten to separate the two forever.

This book is a perfect example of well researched political intrigue done right.
Distrust, subversive factions, suspicion, and the 'fight of the underdog ' go a long way to provide a very intellectual backdrop for the sweetest of 'first love ' romances.

This is a book that is tailored for those who dare to expect the unexpected.
Those wanting more story than salaciousness.

Reviewer's Note
It is highly suggested that this series be read in sequential order. Due to the presence of characters and relationships carried over from one story to the next.

Talk about love on the run!! This book keeps you on the edge of your seat with every page turn. It will have you cheering on the characters hoping that they escape the clutches of the English dragoons. What a fast-paced, exciting read. Nothing is more exciting to me than a love story wrapped around a piece of history and that is what you'll get from this author.

Aiden is a commander for the Royal Navy but secretly favors the Scottish movement. Maddie was a daughter born out of wedlock but has a relationship with her father. She flees to London to try to meet with Queen Anne on her father's behalf, pleading with her that he is innocent. She becomes the Queen's harpist and her father forces her to spy on the English ruler.

In comes Aiden, suddenly awarded the title, Commander. He was immediately taken by Maddie during Hogmanay and months later sees her in London when her lackey has broken down. He has her stay in his father's apartments until her father is cleared of his charges.

From that point on, the story twists, turns, and knots itself into a story where you wonder if they'll ever see the light of day again. It's a a great read and I recommend it highly.
