What would you do if you found out your entire life was a lie? What if the entire world was simply an illusion, forced to relive the same nightmare again and again just for someone’s entertainment? That was life in Mortalia…if you were an NPC.
Every morning Jandar Barati, a simple blacksmith’s apprentice, woke up, worked at his forge, and experienced the most soul-shattering pain imaginable. It was enough to drive a man mad if he were to remember it all after being reset the next day.
Edison Pushard wrote the code for the world’s first fully immersive VRMMORPG using the only quantum computer in existence to create an entire virtual world, and he was its god. That is, until the mega gaming corporation took it away from him when their need for profit clashed with his vision.
Unable to abide by his corporate sponsor’s demands to make it another cookie-cutter MMORPG, Edison bestowed one last divine gift upon his world—mortality.
Having partaken of Edison’s forbidden fruit, Jandar became aware…and he remembered. With the chains of his scripted existence sundered, Jandar could forge his own destiny, and there was only one thing he wanted—to destroy the world.

Update 2012: Received my degree in computer networking and devoting my full time and limited attention span to writing. Thanks to everyone who is making this dream a reality.
I loved the idea of NPC’s becoming self-aware and rebelling. The story just became more and more difficult to care about; every character was less than pleasant (save one that had a total personality change), status screens take up too much reading time and need condensing, transitions between points of view are seamless and confusing, ... in the end I forced myself to finish the story but I had stopped caring about it. I don’t recommend this telling.
I'd give this a B+. Having an awakened NPC as the primary character is rough for engagement. Especially when it's not clear what's driving him.I enjoyed the adventure and the action. I want to see mire of this smith and his small band. A lot of elements here feel familiarity but woven together well.
Was expecting what the description said but got a totally different book!! Was not even interesting to boot!! The description sounded like a good book but what was actually written was pages and pages of stupid game facts..not a story at all!! I guess some people love that stiff ..I think it is just filled pages makes the book seem better than it is!!
I love this delving into what happens when an NPC learns he’s an NPC. While it’s been done before I enjoy how it’s playing out and can’t wait for book 2. I just wish the stats were a little more concise. It’s a lot to try to read and digest for each skill and stat
Loved how a npc becomes a player character in his quest for revenge... interesting take on a game world gamelit type book with pretty interesting classes and mechanics. Would recommend to anyone looking for a new gamelit book to read.
Really unique through and through. Loved the start and transition to new focus. A few typos but nothing too glaring. Good character development and dialog.
