This didn’t work for me at all unfortunately. It was like Modglin tried to take another road that she’s usually heading towards, and she totally got it wrong. First there was the plot itself. It felt more like reading about a massacre, as if this was a horror story where you didn’t really want to encounter more death. Killing children is also triggering, and it felt a bit like modglin was intent on shocking the reader. I’m glad I don’t have to read this again.

The other day this book was recommended in one of my psychological thriller Facebook groups. I mean people were going on about how they read it quite some time ago and haven't been able to stop thinking about it... so obviously I'm like well I need to read it.

⁀₊➷ This is the most farfetched, unrealistic psych thriller I have ever read. And before anyone thinks it... I get it's fiction, but it's out there even for fiction.. and weird.

Told in alternating third person POV , we follow Jordan and her husband Connor as well as the nameless town killer.

The couple just moved to the small town of Bates South Carolina. As they sign the papers to their new home, the individual who sold it to them freaks out when he overhears that Jordan is pregnant but excuses himself and rushes out of their house. Not a red flag or anything right?? LOL

Flash forward, just after the baby is born Jordan is out on her own at the grocery store and there's quite a commotion going on. A woman is literally on the ground sobbing and crying. Jordan , I supposed obviously curious as well as trying to be neighborly walks over to see what's going on and how she can help.

The woman expresses that her daughter is going to die and cry, sob , cry , she just lost her other daughter .. after further explanation we find out that there is a typed list posted on the grocery store bulletin board - just a list of six names. All children.

In the few days that pass after her excursion to the grocery store , all of these children start dying from questionable deaths but all are ruled accidents.

With a husband and family that think she's crazy, an infant son that could be targeted by her digging into the whole 'list' and who the killer could possibly be... Jordan sets out to be the town hero.

⁀₊➷ I figured it out at 20%

⁀₊➷ This was one of the stupidest books I have ever read.

Dark secrets, life-and-death choices, and child murder…..

Book Information

“The List” authored by Kiersten Modglin, is a 271-page mystery first published on October 31, 2016. The audio version is Narrated by Jennifer Jill Araya, David Bendena, and Michael Crouch and was released on August 22, 2023. Thank you to Dreamscape Media for providing me with an advance reader copy of this book for review.

Summary

A decade ago, Bates, South Carolina was forever changed by a mysterious list containing six names of people destined to die, with subsequent lists appearing every six months. Residents went to great lengths to avoid being on these lists, harboring dark secrets to protect themselves. As newcomers Connor and Jordyn Atwood move to Bates, they witness the town's extreme measures to safeguard their lives. With the enigmatic list maker controlling their fate, the Atwoods must decide whether to succumb to their new environment or fight to protect their newfound home, all while realizing that one rule governs them all: obey or find your name on The List.

My Thoughts

Kiersten Modglin's "The List" is a fast-paced and engaging read that doesn't demand too much mental exertion. This story held my interest from start to finish, making it an effortless page-turner.

However, there are aspects that left me feeling frustrated throughout the story. First, the recurring theme of characters making consistently poor decisions. This element became quite prevalent and detracted from my overall enjoyment.

One noteworthy caution for readers is the books focus on the murder of children, including babies. If you have sensitivities in this regard, you should skip this book.

While I can forgive some degree of implausibility in a story for the sake of its narrative, "The List" pushed the boundaries of credibility too far. The town's failure to put an end to the unfolding chaos felt completely implausible from start to finish.

Additionally, the reveal at the end was somewhat predictable, and the concluding events struck me as highly implausible. Unfortunately, this unexpected turn of events undermined the eerie atmosphere that had been skillfully crafted.

On a positive note, the book features multiple narrators, each with their unique pace and tone. This narrative technique added depth to the storytelling, and I particularly appreciated the ominous and cadenced voice employed in the "Him" chapters. The narration of those parts was perfect.

Recommendation

"The List" by Kiersten Modglin offers a fast-paced and easy-to-read story with multiple narrators that enrich the storytelling experience. However, the prevalence of poor decision-making, disturbing subject matter, and implausibility in many plot elements may hinder the overall enjoyment of this otherwise engaging novel. Recommended with caution if you are looking for a quick mystery.

In the quaint town of Bates, a peculiar list is released every six months. This list, comprising six names, bears a most ominous significance - those named are fated to meet an untimely demise. Despite the town's acceptance of this practice, a newcomer, Jordyn, refuses to stand idly by. With determination, she sets out to unravel the mystery behind these deaths. Will she succeed? Only time will tell.

Have you ever found yourself getting frustrated with a character who consistently makes poor decisions? Well, that's exactly how I felt while reading the first quarter of this novel. Despite numerous warning signs, the protagonist chose to ignore them all! However, as the story progressed, the main character evolved and the plot became more captivating and enjoyable, especially with an unexpected twist.

Overall, a captivating thriller that had me guessing until the very end.

*** Thank you to NetGalley, Kiersten Modglin, and Dreamscape Media for graciously sending me the audiobook to review. As always, all thoughts are my own.***

Shades of "The Lottery" here.

This book is really quite different. It tells the tale of a couple who move to a small town in South Carolina. There they find their dream home and happily move in, expecting a fun, lively time in a quaint small town.

That's not exactly what they get.

You see every six months, a strange list is posted. This list contains names -- new names with each list. That's it.

Sounds harmless right? Only it isn't. You see, friends, this is a hit list. All the names that appear are of different townspeople who then ....die. They ALWAYS die. If one's name is on the list, one can expect to die. There is no salvation, nothing coming to save you.

Only the people who die are all babies, children and teens. Anyone over 18 is usually "safe."

The couple obviously do not know about the list when they buy the house.

Nobody knows who or what is doing the killing. These killings -- and the list -- have been going on so long that the town is crushed, broken by it and none of the people who dwell there are able to leave the town. This is because anybody who leaves dies. And plenty have seen that for themselves.

So there is nobody to help. The police are worn down and do not even do investigations any longer.

The town sees few outsiders. People are suspicious and many stay walled up inside their homes, afraid, alive and yet living as zombies, awake but asleep to life, wanting only to keep themselves and their loved ones safe and dreading the every few month list, knowing what will happen once it comes out.

If this book sounds creepy that is because it is. This was unlike anything I've read recently and one reads with a kind of deepening horror as you're introduced to town members and can almost feel their hopelessness.

In time, the couple finds out about the list. How they handle it is vastly different from each other and will test their relationship with each other and others.

There is much to like about this book. And I did like some of it. Unfortunetly what I did not like was quite prevalent and that is the murder of children, particularly babies. If you have issues with that, you might want to skip this.

The deaths come in all different ways, many of them mighty creepy and though the story is transfixing I'd have liked it better I think if the violence was not so prevalent. There was enough eeriness in the pages where there did not need to be so much violence and that brought it down a bit for me.

I also found some things very unrealistic. The wrap up which I will not give away, seemed highly implausible to me and kind of ruined the eerie atmosphere. In short -- I think this writer is terrific and would read other works from her but the unpleasantness of the murders and unrealistic component through much of the second half, has me giving a rating of three stars.

Leave your believably factor at the door for this one! 🤪

You might want to steer clear of the town of Bates, South Carolina, where prominently displayed on a bulletin board in the supermarket is a list of children's names. The list contained six names and within six months all those named are dead. That started ten years ago, but every six months, a new list appears and the same tragedies occur. Why in the world would any parent want to live there?

The town, over the years, supposedly has investigated this disastrous happening but the deaths have all been attributed to "natural causes". (like hell they are!) You would have to be an utter moron to believe such a thing and yet the people do, terrified over who or what might be the cause. This would be my sign to get out of town!

At any rate, unbeknownst to Connor and Jordyn Atwood, they buy their dream home, and move into town to a very frosty reception of the townsfolk. Jordyn is pregnant and becomes fearful as she learns of the cursed happenings. She, after much struggling, with her husband, her parents, and others, is able to enlist the help of other women who FINALLY decide to end this or die trying.

While this was not a listen that I was hoping for, it did make me wonder how people could be so intimidated, how scared, how totally ridiculous allowing this to happen. As I said above, believably if not required for this craziness!

......and so you will see how many questions arise from this insane situation that the police nor others seem to see. What drugs are these people on? Seriously this was a downright ridiculous story, but every so often I indulge in the ridiculous, and here we are.

Thank you to NetGalley, and Dreamscape Media for the opportunity to listen to this bizarre story.

I love Kiersten Modglin and while I am glad she is getting more notice I’m not sure I agree that all of her earliest books need to be republished especially with audiobook. This book isn’t bad at all, but she has grown so much over these short years so these books really aren’t a great example of her potential. I will say that the narration of this audiobook was spot on. This story was completely implausible from start to finish and I wasn’t surprised by the ending. I didn’t think the story moved as quickly as it could have and I found myself having to push myself into finishing this one. Jordan and her husband Conner need to move away from the city and find the perfect house in Bates. But you don’t want to live in Bates. Bates has a secret. Every six months 6 names appear on a list and within those six months they all die. Please note for trigger warning pretty much all people who die in this story are children. Overall I gave this one 3.5 stars rounded up because of the narration and the potential for the queen of twisty thrillers I know has her roots in this one.

Completely implausible!!

This was the most ill thought out book I have ever read! The plot was absolutely implausible. How could one person be responsible for all of the deaths….and they were ALL orchestrated just perfectly so that the plan worked flawlessly?? And no one refused to cooperate?? Surely not—this was totally unrealistic. The ending was super nauseating too. This is the last book I will read by this author. I am almost angry that I wasted 2 days on such irresponsible drivel.

First off, who writes a book about children being murdered? I like many of Modglin’s books, but this one didn’t cut it. It’s depressing, silly and tragic. Even the reveals at the end were just horrible. I’m only giving 3 stars out of respect to the author.

Excellent narration!! Mainly from Jordyn Atwoods point of view but loved the narrator for “Him”, very ominous and spooky sounding.

Story was fast paced, kept my interest and the end twist—-wow, crazy!!

The Atwood family moves to Bates to get out of the city and enjoy small town life, this town has secrets and a mysterious list that claims children of the town. The Atwood’s don’t know before moving to the town but can they figure it out in time to escape.

Unfortunately, I just really did not enjoy The List. I really wanted to! Its premise is so promising — a town haunted by a child killer and each citizen coerced into taking part each time — but the book just had too many elements that don’t work.

From posing as FBI agents in front of someone she’d met before to organizing a street protest to get the murders to stop (yeah…I don’t know), this main character’s ideas were just dumb.

Then, when the killer is revealed, there’s really no way it makes sense. If he had grown up in this town, why didn’t anyone welcome him back or comment on knowing him before? How could he have orchestrated more than a decade of murders if he hadn’t even lived in the town?

One small element of the book I did like was the new bond formed between estranged sisters.

And sorry to add one more negative, but there were several grammatical and continuity errors throughout. (For example, I did not go back and check but I’m pretty sure one of the victims was called by the wrong name toward the end)

Modglin is a hit-or-miss author for me, but The List is definitely a miss in my book.

I enjoyed The List. It was fast-paced and thrilling, a very easy read, but it also felt familiar. It felt like a Ruth Ware book, just placed in the rural US instead of the UK. It followed Ware's typical storyline, all the way to the satisfying ending.

Here we have Jordan, a competent American woman who's a fish out of water and is discovering weird things going on. She is frantic to get someone to believe her, going to ludicrous extremes to get people in authority to understand the awful conspiracy she's figured out. It was all a bit ridiculous, but I still found it a compelling read. The reveal of whodunit was kind of predictable, but that was all right too.

Overall, this would make a good beach read. Don't think too hard about it and just enjoy the thrill.

This was a super fun and suspenseful listen on audio and I binged this one in just a few sittings as I was so enthralled in the story. Kiersten Modglin's books are perfect for when you're looking for a twisty read without having to think too much and just enjoy the ride, and this book was no different.

Every six months a list gets posted with six names of children who will eventually die in strange ways in the creepy little town of Bates where no one leaves. I got total "The Watcher" vibes when reading from the POV of the killer and the audiobook took that creep level to a whole other level. If you've enjoyed K-Mods books in the past definitely give this one a listen!

This book reminded me a lot of the chain. I liked how fast paced this book was and it got right into it from the start. I found Jordan (the main character) so annoying, but it didn’t change the fact that I couldn’t put it down. I definitely recommend reading this book if you liked the chain and/or fast paced thrillers.

A couple who soon will be parents buy a house in a small town to find out that some really disturbing things are going on there. Every few months a list with children's names gets posted and they all die in accidents.

I really liked the idea of the book. And I can see Kiersten Modglin's talent in keeping things thrilling so if I see another of her books that will catch my eye I will definitely read it. But this one can't be her best one considering that she won awards in suspense thrillers. I don't expect my books to be very realistic but come on. Some of the plot holes and extreme stupidity of the population in that town is just too irritating to look over. Don't tell me they couldn't do anything about it in over a decade....

The ending is alright. The murder was not somebody I suspected but this was only because of some things which were just not fitting together. Otherwise if it would have made more sense it would have been a more common twist that us suspense thriller fans get to see once in a while.

This book had an interesting concept. It kept me invested, but it didn’t really sink its teeth into me. It felt like they were just getting into the mystery of it and then all of a sudden it was resolved. If you’re looking for a quick mystery read, this could be a good one.

The List
By: Kiersten Modglin
5⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Modglin never disappoints. Oh the twisted story in this novel shocked me.

A new couple buys a home in a small town which has been for sale for 3 years. The owner was the son and asked if they had children when he sold them the house…

They quickly find out children have been killed or found dead in the past years and the numbers are way to high! The new owners wife is pregnant and she wants to keep this fact hidden.

Will they find out if there is something sinister happening? Of course there is! The title suggest a list and the list comes a couple times a year with the name of children who eventually die. Can she save her baby?

The twist was nothing I every expected and Modglin always stumps me. This is one of her older ones. I working my way through her catalogue and her new one Hemlock comes out August 31, and of course I preordered.

ARC audiobook provided in exchange for an honest review.

The three narrators did a wonderful job with this book! All the characters voices were clear and it was an easy listen. I really liked all the mystery surrounding the entire town in the book! I can honestly say that I didn’t know how everything would turn out until the very end! The characters are very well developed, with backstories that make the whole story complete. If you like psychological thrillers you need to pick up this book!

The murderer was painfully obvious from the start, and the story was filled with so many logical loopholes. There were just too many questions unanswered - it felt like the author had an outline for a book, failed the develop the storyline and fill in the gaps, and just decided to present it to readers without further thought. The story just didn’t feel real.

For example - how could the murderer have spent time away from the town while still managing to eavesdrop on everyone’s conversation? And by everyone, I mean 3600 people. Sure, maybe not everyone has phones (some of them might be kids) but throw in texts and realistically no one, addiction or not, could manage to eavesdrop and read everything. And this went on every day for ten years??! This cannot possibly be a one man job, it just doesn’t make sense. And if he’s the owner of a telephone company, surely he’d have employees? How have they been reporting to him?

Also, how could they not have investigated who had access to their phones or texts to begin with?? I mean, that would have been my first line of inquiry.

Third, it’s painfully obvious that Jordyn and her family have been granted a “get out of jail free” card. This was alluded to by some characters but no one thought to seriously investigate that? Jordyn’s family is not made up of Jordyn alone right?

Fourth, how is the murderer travelling around? To cemeteries, middle of the night etc. Surely his car (I’m assuming he has a car) must be parked somewhere reasonably close to the scene? How can it be that no one noticed? Especially since some of these places are really deserted.

The emotions portrayed in the book are also sometimes exaggerated, and don’t seem to match the background to these emotions. For example, Jordyn was really upset when Erin died and kept blaming herself, but they didn’t seem that close? Sure they met a couple of times but that’s it. Or when Jordyn’s mum met her after the big reveal, she was not sad about Kate and she didn’t have questions about what the hell is going on, and instead just seemed really sorry? I think more details would have been appreciated. It just didn’t feel real.

*I was sent a copy of this book in return for my honest review.*
This is the first book I have ever read from this author.

I want to start by talking about the cover. Seeing a typewriter with the word "you" in quotation marks gave me the creeps. It made me wonder what is about to happen in this novel.

The town of Bates was forever changed by a slip of paper with 6 names on it known as The List. The six people set to die.

This book was absolutely amazing. This book had me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. A thriller that had the perfect pace while packing a knockout punch to the heart.

For an author who is categorized as a suspense author, Kiersten put together one of the best thrillers I have ever read. Her writing style is very unique. She was able to piece together a psychological thriller with the perfect amount of back story, while leaving you in shock as you read along.

I didn't guess the ending to this story. By far my favorite ending out of all of the Thrillers I have read to date. This mega reveal was so bone chilling that I had goosebumps while saying oh wow while it was happening.

Coming in at 261 pages, this book will surprise you, and will grow on you as one of the thrillers that you will never forget.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a fantastic thriller. Kiersten Modglin is an author I will be gravitating towards more this year. I cannot wait to read everything she writes!!!!!

**I received an ARC of this book for an honest review**

The List starts like a Stephen King book in a very sinister undertone. Bates is a small town with someone or someones controlling everyone through threats to their children. Children are killed and every few months a list is posted with childrens names on it- the next to die.

The plot is so clever and is written in a way that has the reader imagine and feel the saddness and fear within Bates communiry. Jordyn takes things into own hands and as a character you see her strength and courage even though her own family think she is going crazy. I was so invested in this book I was rooting for her the whole time.

The List is written well from different characters perspective making it easy to read and follow the plot. Modglin writes in a manner that is a cat and mouse situation and you don't know whats coming till the end. I love that I can't guess correctly making the ending a real shocker!

Each of Modglin's books arw very different making them unpredictable, exciting and thrilling.

This one was really quite different! Bates is a town you don’t want to live in! When Jordyn and her husband Connor move there , Jordyn becomes obsessed with the towns history. It seems children have been dying here for over ten years all seemingly accidents and no one is investigating. With Jordyn having her own son Ollie to think about she tries to solve the mystery of the town! Who is it that hangs up the list containing 6 childrens names every six months? The same children that will all die.

This was a crazy read 🤪. I made a guess pretty early on has to who I thought "him" was, and I was actually right! The premise was out there, but the book kept me intrigued wanting to see how this would all play out.

Ten years ago in a small town (Bates, South Carolina) the town was changed forever, with a slip of paper that has 6 names on The List. A new list comes out every 6 months & you must keep secrets and go to extreme measures.
I listened to this as an audiobook and absolutely loved the narrators. In fact ,this is some of the best narration I’ve listened to in an audio book, they did an impressive job of story telling, keeping my attention & helping me connect to the characters.
I loved the storyline & location ( I love reading/listening) about locations near me.

Thank you NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for the ARC and the chance to listen and review it honestly.
