A history and geography as well as a description of the government, economy, people, lifestyle, religion, language, arts, leisure time activities, festivals, and food of this landlocked West African country.
My knowledge of Northwestern Africa is sorely lacking, and this book had my head spinning with the variety of cultures in Niger specifically and in the Sahara in general. Lots of great information and some truly breathtaking pictures in this book.
Interesting contrast between this and the book on Mauritania I read in this same series: Desertification, or the expansion of the Sahara (and the shrinking of the Sahel) isn't really mentioned in the Niger book. This one is an earlier edition from the late '90s; the Mauritania book is very recent. In the book on Mauritania, desertification dominates every chapter in one way or another. The issue is presented as the most important issue facing the nation of Mauritania. It must be even more profound in Niger, which is mostly desert, and I imagine a recent revision of this book would be a different book entirely. Scary.
