Does the imagined conflict between Islam and modernity affect the Muslims' political behaviour in this country?
Are Muslim religious institutions-mosques and madrasas-directly involved in politics?
Do they instruct the community to vote strategically in all elections?
What are 'Muslim issues'?
Is it only about triple talaq?
Are Muslims truly nationalists? Or do they continue to remain just an 'other' in India?
While these questions intrigue us, we seldom debate to find pragmatic answers to these queries. Examining the everydayness of Muslims in contemporary India, Hilal Ahmed offers an evocative story of politics and Islam in India, which goes beyond the given narratives of Muslim victimhood and Islamic separation.
I enjoyed reading the book since it had an inextricable linkage between Indian Muslims and politics. What is political Islam or the role of AIMPLB or proselytism or the Muslim opposition for BJP? This book encompasses similar requests with elaborate responses in conjunction with data (Sachar report and similar).
We must know that Muslims are not homogenous. Like other religions per se - Hindus, Muslim religion also has caste or sect demarcation followed by unalike political sentiments. It would be unfair to put all the Muslims into one plate.
Then there is triple talaq and UCC (Universal Civil Code). Is it written in the Quran? No, it is an ill practice and like every religion has a few malpractices under the pretext of religion, it is one of them but it is not evangelized in the Quran.
I am going to take one start off this book because at some point I found it slightly prejudiced. Nonetheless, overall a well-explained book with facts, data, and a positive attitude.
💍Siyasi Muslims By Hilal Ahmed💍 Examining the everydayness of Muslims in contemporary India, Hilal Ahmed offers an evocative story of politics and Islam in India, which goes beyond the given narratives of Muslim victimhood and Islamic separation. . 📚My Take: I was one of those readers who was eagerly waiting for it's release & I am so happy that I finally able to read it. Revolutionary changes that took place years ago have still and impact on the roads and the soil of our country. The book tells about the Muslim community in India well it's not only about the Muslim community in India but it also talks about the political Islam. What is political Islam? You will get to know that in this book. Starting from the rural to the modern areas of India amazing community has given us the lively brotherhoodness which just couldn't be appreciated. . Talking about the minute details and the major issues the book reveals all kind of information in form of data which are given in the different parts of the book. Different charts with different topics dealt by the Muslim community. The language was very informative, it was up to the mark and cleared alot of misunderstandings. I think this is not just a political book but it's so much more than that. The entire role of the book is to deal with the basic topics which are usually ignore. I really enjoyed it, alot of patience & knowledge absorbing capacity is required to absorb it completely. I highly recommend it. The cover too is very very charismatic. . Rating: 4🌟
I expected this book, seeing the name of the author as a muslim, to be somewhat supportive to the practices of the muslim community, howsoever factual it may be.
I m happy to write here, that it was not so. The writer did a good research followed with a good presentation of the actual scenario of the majority and minority politics in our country. We should not atleast pre-judge Hilal to be a muslim representative, claiming his work to be a primary deed of merely defending the muslims.
The various arguments presented in this book adds a lot to the understanding of a common indian citizen regarding "Muslim Politics" and the 3 metaphors that this term signifies today.
Most importantly, if the hindutva extremists are pointed for their activities, then the so called secular liberals are also shown the mirror, of where they both are doing wrong in this book.
A very insightful book that I would happily rate 5 stars were it not for the verbosity and redundancy in the text. Prof Hilal Ahmed is far more lucid in his frequent appearances on Prime Time. Perhaps the book's editor was too indulgent ! Nevertheless, the book provides one with a bird's eye view of the major issues that Indian Muslims face in contemporary India, including the failure of non Muslims to view them as other than a monolithic vote bank.
Read this book, and i found little bit deviated what the name of book carry. And i found that the topics are little bit less organised they don’t have connections, it fail to generate interest
I really enjoyed reading this book. It was very factual and in depth regarding the political scenario of Muslims in India; how they are percieved by the media, by the political and religious leaders, and what actually constitutes the diverse Muslim population. Although I'm not the most well versed when it comes to political issues, the jargon was not that hard to follow and was an interesting read. .
The author raised some thought-provoking questions and his arguments held up for the most part. I found his discussion on the contradictions of Hindutva and the Hindu right's struggle to define it in clear terms intriguing. One qualm was that certain chapters felt a bit repetitive.
