Biography

MATT SHAW was born, quite by accident (his mother tripped, he shot out) September 30th 1980 in Winchester hospital where he was immediately placed on the baby ward and EBay. Some twelve years later (wandering the corridors of the hospital and playing with road kill when he was on day release), the listing closed and he remained unsold, he was booted out of the hospital to start his life as a writer and hobbit – beginning with writing screenplays and short stories for his own amusement before finally getting published when he was twenty-seven years and forty-five seconds old.

Once Published weekly in a lad's magazine with his photography work, Matt Shaw is also a published author and cartoonist. Has to be said, can be a bit of a flirt and definitely, without a shadow of a doubt, somewhat of a klutz.

This is a pick and choose anthology

I’ll start by saying that I am a Matt Shaw fan. However, good stories are good stories, and this anthology was lacking. The majority of the stories felt like violence for violence sake, and the others were just average tales.

There were a couple of standouts:
Santa’s Secret
Cold

The one thing I will say about Matt Shaw though is that the man can write... and write fast. (He also has quite the dark wit). He is such a huge producer of new stories and he has an amazing imagination. That being said, if you are a new Shaw reader, DO NOT start with this anthology.

Choose instead:
Chained
Full Moon
Bah humbug (now that is an awesome anthology)
Any of Shaw’s yearly recaps of his work (Shaw 2016 and Shaw 2017 were standouts)

Great character studies

The Matt Shaw has collected a good lot of stories in this book, showing off his ability to shift genres as the muse guides. Especially with the array of character choices he pulls together as story dictates. Extreme horror? Yes, it's there, but Shaw does not fuse every story this way. He is as likely to pull emotions from his readers with humor, angst and the action packed feel of a plunging, out of control roller coaster. Long time readers and new arrivals are all welcome into The Matt Shaw world of mysteries!

Shaw's books are always hit or miss with me. This was a definite miss. Not an enjoyable story in the bunch. If you're looking for gore and lewd story lines this is for you. If you're looking for actual horror (as I was) then it's definitely not for you. I'm okay with gore but it needs to have a point. This collection just seemed to be gore and perversion for the sake of gore and perversion.

Oh, What a mind!

In reading these stories one needs time to digest the words and try to comprehend what kind of mind is it that can think so far out of the realm of reality. Uniquely twisted, insulting depraved and demented, but oh so deliciously intriguing.

What?!????

This book needs a disclaimer!!! This is hard core, no happy endings. The first story grabs you and it’s a harrowing ride from there. I’m struggling to find words....I don’t think I ever read a collection of stories like this. Well done Mr. Shaw!

Wow, ok then

So, out of all the stories, the last one, "Ugly" is simply heartbreaking and it upsets me because it's basically a true story. The entire book is a good read, just, heads up on the last one.

Boring and sinking to new lows

When you have to lower yourself to killing off kids and infants in disgusting ways, it might be time for a break. This collection totally disappointed me on all levels. At least now I remember why I quit reading his stuff.
