Cabot finds himself right in the middle of two titans. On one side, he's got the Planetary Alliance Cooperative, and their belief that he can help them in their time of need.
On the other side, he's got a notorious crime boss, who loves nothing more than bringing entire governments to their knees. Take the galaxy's biggest crime boss to the PAC headquarters? Sure. That couldn't possibly go wrong a million different ways.
Somehow, he's supposed to work with both sides. Cabot would say no, but he can't quite pass up the chance of ridding the PAC zone of a terrible threat.
All he really wants is to go home to his quiet life on Dragonfire Station. Maybe somehow, if he's very clever, he can get this job done and go back to being a regular trader.
He's a shopkeeper, not a hero. But today, he's going to have to play hero.

Zen DiPietro is a lifelong bookworm, writer, and dreamer. Perhaps most importantly, a Browncoat Trekkie Whovian. Also red-haired, left-handed, and uber geek. Absolutely terrible at conforming. A recovering gamer, but we won’t talk about that. Particular loves include badass heroines, British accents, and the smell of Band-Aids. You can sign up for her newsletter at www.zendipietro.com.
The characters were fun to watch in all the books and this is no exception. The background is hazy and the economics is sketched in rather than detailed. The same is true of the governmental and military structures. The naval capability both the unit capability and concentration of forces are vague.
It's similar to the period in European history when navies relied on armed merchant ships to provide the bulk of fighting power in their fleets. The writing and editing are good. It makes for a breezy, soft read with heart.
I'll be reading the series and other books by Zen DiPietro hoping for more of that.
Another great book in the series, it is not really a stand alone book, it should be read in order with the others. That being said, the story arc pulls you in and keeps you interested in overall outcome. Cabot Layne makes an amazing run from a bit player in earlier books to central figure in this series, Zen fills out his character nicely, from filling in his backstory to building Cabot into someone the readers root for.
This series just gets better and better. Great characters, interesting plot, excellent dialogue, and a touch of romance for flavor. This is not your usual blood & guts mercenary book; this is straight up 5 stars! I received a pre-release eARC with no strings attached.
It's been a while since I've read about a main character with ethics. I like him and don't find him wishy washy . He seems to grow as these novels continue going from a scoundrel into a more interesting person. I can't wait to read the next episode.
Massive space battles, complete and total destruction of life as we know it?..................Nah. A story you can and will totally get into? Yes, a must read.
