I saved Washington D.C., and America as we know it, when Lord Mighty had a tiff. I saved the whole Eastern seaboard when it was Brutal’s turn to have a tantrum. Hell, I saved the PLANET back in Hashima when Dr. Zundergrub went postal.
You’d think that would have earned me a little credit around here.
But no, I’m Blackjack, the World’s Most Wanted villain. I can’t step foot in half the civilized countries in the globe and they don’t want me in the other half, either. Japan is suing me for 50 billion for relocating their island - wasn’t me - and Germany wants to re-institute capital punishment on my account for killing a bunch of their special service guys - was me.
Things might look dire, but the people themselves, they love me. I’m polling at 89%. 93% among Republicans. I’m more popular than the Pope. More popular than puppies. So, there’s that to look forward to.
Because when things get dire, when the next super-powered asshole decides to go hysterical and break half the planet, you know who they’re going to turn to.
I've always been a fan of the Blackjack books and I completely missed the release of this one. I'm sorry about that because it's good enough to be the finale of the series. Blackjack wants to be redeemed and he's done his best to do so but the public isn't having any of it. He's caused too much damage and is still a hero killer in the eyes of them. Admittedly, I kind of wish he'd been a bit more "bad" because I was actually feeling the Lady Armada/Blackjack ship. He's a good boy now, though, and stays true to his sweetie-pie.
Unfortunately, I do feel this book went far too hard on our naughty protagonist as seemingly every page is him getting the crud beaten out of him. Seriously, the baddest man in his universe gets his posterior handed to him more than Wolverine and Worf combined. Still, I liked the climax and the spiritual (really) conflict between Blackjack and Father Mike. I hope they do a 5th book but this doesn't end with any cliffhangers or lingering plots that need to be resolved so I can wait.
Blackjack has always been a scrapper. Not a technical or trained fighter, but cunning, brutal, tough, and dangerous. Not any more. Watch Blackjack turn into a punching bag. He has nine fights and gets punked in every one. Sure he gets a victory in all of them, but he fights badly and gets slapped around like a toddler - in addition to almost being killed, as usual.
The writing of the last quarter is pretty bad, too. Lots of typos, including some that render passages incomprehensible, and some poor editing choices left me scratching my head.
Not a bad book, but it ends badly. Reluctantly recommended to fans of the series.
Not bad, but I'm left scratching my head and trying to figure out what happened? In the previous books, Blackjack is nigh unstoppable. Sure, he gets beat to hell, but he's extremely tough and dished it out as much as he can take it.
Not so in this book. Even after being supercharged after shard world, he's rather weak, while Apogee is somehow stronger. He repeatedly gets the crap kicked out of him for no good reason.
I get that he's trying to walk a path to redemption in the eyes of the public (he's already found that redemption in the eyes of the supers), but still, he should have been more aggressive.
Blackjack is trying to turn his life around but its not easy with his past still causing problems. He's an easy person to hang the ills of the world upon and someone decides he's the perfect person to complete his revenge upon. The book continues the character growth of Blackjack and I'll still pick up the next book in this series when it comes out as its one of the better super hero series I've read I think.
Still the best hero story out there. Glad to see the growth. Hope Blackjack returns even stronger. Also happy with the ending and hope things keep moving in a positive way.
these authors make a amazing team. such a great storyline was intense, I couldn't put it down. I not to happy with BJ leveling out but I understand. Also no hint at ALL about the aliens? hurry up and finish book 5!! 😆
It was a decent sequel... Some character growth but still I believe there was some room for improvement. Overall it was a decent part of Blackjack's story and I'm looking forward to the wedding!
