It was supposed to be a simple – if hugely lucrative – job. Captain Michael Dannage and the crew of the Hope’s Folly can’t pass up the opportunity to salvage a fleet of warships from the long dead Terran Imperium. Things never go right for Dannage, but he never expected them to get this out of hand. The Terran ships aren’t as derelict as everyone thought and the malicious force that destroyed the Terrans thousands of years ago is still alive and still bent on humanity’s annihilation. This could mean the end for all Dannage holds dear, and he’ll do whatever it takes to save the people he cares about. As enemies – both ancient and modern clash – it will take all Dannage’s skills and more than a little luck to survive. They say ‘hope is not a strategy’, but it’s all Dannage has left.
When Rob was child, bedtime stories were down to his dad. Because it's the kind of thing father's do, the deal became that Dad would read, but only if he chose the books. Thus they quickly progressed from Puddle Lane and Thomas the Tank Engine to Terry Brooks and JRR Tolkien. That, combined with a perpetual love of Star Trek (thanks again, Dad), has led to Rob's joint loves of SciFi and Fantasy.
Rob was diagnosed with Dyslexia around the time he started school, and (despite a love of stories) didn't start actually reading until about the age of eight. Until then, audio-books were his gateway to the varied worlds of fiction.
He only started writing in earnest while he was at university (studying Archaeology), and where he spent far to much time writing Star Trek stories (that will never see the light of day). After realising that a career in archaeology would mean having to go outside, Rob retrained in IT Support, and moved into writing original fiction (no, you can't see that one either).
Now, several years, multiple stories , several successful NanoWriMos, and a lot of writing later, Rob's debut novel Slave Mind is now out on amazon.
Thanks for reading and don't forget to leave a review!
I am still learning how to write a review. This is my attempt. Enjoy ~~ A Review makes an argument. My argument is that you should not discard this book out of hand just because I gave this 3 stars. It is not a bad thing to offer harsh criticism. I did read this. Whole thing. Did not DFN during the first 10% which is indeed the roughest part. Did this need an editor? Yes. "A Good Writer can make a good story seem great" This is the work of a Good Writer who needed to lean on the original ideas and sequencing presented and less on the 'inspiration' points.
This was an amazing spectacle which was bogged down by the worries of the author not trusting the reader, or the story, to just be.
If you're also a writer? You should read this. Experience the spectacle.
It you're a reader and looking for something closer to 'without flaw' as we judge the qualities of our entertainment by the lack of flaws within it? I would warn you to skip it.
This is something that will take patience, tolerance, and compassion for a debut author to deal with. It can move you. It can incite you to feel. It will invite you to your desires using at points a Paint by Numbers construction and then the ending will happen. I nearly threw my phone at the wall. (But that's just me)
I could go on for pages with spoiler nitpicks and criticisms of the individual pieces but it would be excessive and unneeded in this box. However if the author does read this? I would implore them to open a line of communication that readers who catch the typos and formatting can send that in and allow for a revision that will aid later readers.
It was an experience. One that was unique. And if you have the willingness to try it? Add this to your TBR.
The Terrans have arrived. Faster, stronger, and with better tech, they jump from planet to planet causing havoc and with one goal in mind: annihilate the humans. Capitan Dannage and his crew will do all in their power to stop the might Terrans, even waking up one of them from their cryo-sleep and having her by their side, all the while trying to put the pieces together about why would the ancient race wake up and try to destroy them without giving it a second thought. This fast-paced story won’t let you breathe as they go from adventure to adventure trying to stop the Terrans. The fate of humanity will be decided soon and Dannage and drew will have a front seat. It was a fun read and I dearly loved Dannage and his constant inner conflicts. The start is a bit bumpy but don't let that deter you since you'll be plunged into a whirl of non-stop action.
