Day Zero

Rate this book
A final shadow swallows the Sun and Earth, and in mere minutes, humanity is erased from the cosmos—all save one. When Ryan McBain regains consciousness, he is drifting alone in orbit. He soon comes to realize that life as he knew it is gone. In a handful of minutes, a savage force destroys his home planet, and a dark evil consumes his host star. As he is left in darkness and injured near death, a family of alien scavengers happen upon the last human. Their culture follows the Peaceful Path, and the family rescues him in more ways than one. A higher purpose is in play for Ryan, and the path forward is twisted by mysterious correlations to his troubled past. Death is a constant presence and fuels a madness that drives him to the doorstep of ancient lifeforms. Using images from his past to communicate, a race of stellar beings makes first contact with the last of humanity. Through a shared cognitive overlap, an unlikely alliance is formed. Along with the tender camaraderie of quirky ancient beings, Ryan is presented with a means to travel the galaxy. All the while, an evil presence continues to drive a horde of dark minions across the Milky Way and threatens the lives of billions. The purpose of the new alliance is to face off with the end. Ryan knows that to kill a monster, you must first understand it. However, living long enough to know this enemy is far easier said than done. Day Zero is the first book in a gripping science fiction adventure that chronicles the last of humanity traveling in space, forming alliances with advanced alien life, and evolving to counter dark forces.

J.W. Griffin

J.W. Griffin has often gazed up into the starry night and imagined a chance meeting someday in an off-world cantina. Convinced he was born on the right planet in the wrong time, he has to remind himself that interplanetary travel is not yet a reality. His coping mechanism is to write about the experience.

With a penchant for otherworldly adventure, he is an avid scuba diver and former air cargo captain. Interests in anthropology and religion propelled him through a B.A. from Lewis and Clark College. He draws from these interests and writes with a desire to capture moments that transcend basic human instinct.

J.W. Griffin currently resides in Oregon with his family and two rowdy Bouvier des Flandres

4.50 really good space opera begins

This series gets off to a great start with a lot of heart and character building. Ryan, the main character, has some close calls but survives against all odds. So that part of the typical space opera is in place. What makes this better than many is a mystical touch and a strong universe build. Slight issues: Ryan can seem a bit whiny and overly modest- but this is rare and minor, the style of writing is a bit distancing. Highly recommended to fans of space opera

I found this to be a good read. A bit of a slow start (typical for me with sci-fi books) but once it got rolling, I couldn’t wait to read more.
I am looking forward to continuing the adventure when the second book is released!

Loved It!

I loved this story and the characters. The writing is so good it's difficult to believe it's the author"s debut book. Can't wait for the next book in the series.

More than your usual scifi

Endpoint is an interesting tale. It feels like several scifi stories winding together to tell the larger one. Each thread began well, but it meandered a bit too much for me and took a while to finish.
It asks some great questions about existence and humanity and takes the reader to some surprising places.

I need to read it again.
The story is a compelling one. I struggled with the first few chapters and the changes in time and place. I think that the fault is mine, not the author's.
When I have read it again, I will be ready to move on to book 2.

Who is Khattara, and do I really care to find out?
Why so many time jumps?
Ryan, is he a hero or just a guy doing his best - often being really annoying, I must add ...
Well, I guess I will read a bit more, but I'm not excited. I hope the story will grow on me.

Endpoint

Interesting way to travel back and forth through time. I definitely got to know Ryan and his path towards enlightenment or destruction. I am not sure which.

Interesting.

Interesting concept. Good story. More than science fiction. Overall the story covers more than the military side of his life.
