Now that Coco has been fully accepted into Qifrey's Atelier, it's time for her and her colleagues to move onto the next test: The Sincerity of the Shield. Passing the test involves escorting some feathery friends to their nesting grounds, which sounds simple enough, except that the path before the young witches is a winding road filled with ancient magical traps! The test must also be completed in a group, and there's one witch-in-training from outside of Qifrey's atelier who doesn't seem to have the confidence to make the cut. To top it all off, a Brimmed Cap lurks in the shadows, waiting to attack...

A continuation of one of the very best manga series going, the story of young girl Coco who now is fully integrated into the atelier. The challenge here is the second test for the apprentices, "The Sincerity of the Shield," wherein they must shepherd some feathered friends through several scary challenges, including a flying, snaking road and some "brimhat"witches.

Cool stuff you'd only see in younger fantasy, maybe:

*Scaled wolves (that's right, wolves with scales; why? Because fantasy and invention)

*Olruggio's invention of "snugstones" (that keeps you warm wherever you go)

* Myrphons (basically cuter and cuddlier gryphons)

Not a fan of the cloyingly cute "brush buddy," basically a worm that is around when you are drawing (though this very creature might be awesome for VERY young readers, who may really like it SOOOOO much. . .)

But the art and the positivity are the keys to making this one fun and better than average fantasy manga.

This is hard because I don’t love this series so far. They’re very cute and easy to fly through but I don’t know what’s missing. They have gotten a bit darker as we learn more about the enemy but I never feel fully satisfied when I finish a volume..idk if I should continue

in this volume, agott is ready to take the second witch test, but readers are surprised when qifrey announces he signed richeh up against her wishes to take the test alongside agott.

we gain more insight into richeh’s background and her desire to be a more “unconventional” witch, as well as the rights apprentices have to select their own masters

Ну вже четвертий том має бути слабший за попередні, адже скільки часу можна писати хорошу історію. Ось так я собі роздумував, коли взяв до рук четверту арку манґи «Ательє чаклуньских капелюхів» від сценаристки й художниці Камоме Шірахама. Я вважав, що це далі буде така собі розмірена історія про фентезійний світ, де дівчата навчаються, боряться зі своїми страхами, потрапляють у цікаві пригоди і все під кінець закінчується добре. А головне — усе відбувається без надмірної жорстокості та несправедливості. І, як же я помилився.

Ця арка заглиблює нас трохи більше у світ серії. Аґатта, Річе та новачок Юіні намагаються завершити свій наступний іспит, який визначив для них чарозал. Ці іспити потрібні для молодих чарівників і чарівниць для того, щоби стати незалежними від своїх вчителів. Водночас, Кіфлі разом із Коко та Тетією супроводжують інших дівчат до місця їхнього іспиту, печери із дорогою виглядом звивистої змії.

Як я розповідав у відгуках до попередніх томів, Камоме Шірахама в кожній арці вводить нового персонажа. Цього разу це став Юіні, який уже не вперше намагається пройти це завдання. Авторка показала нам психолігічний тиск на нього з боку вчителя, його переживання, намагання довести вчителю, що він не бездарний, та зміну героя впродовж тому. Я не знаю, як у Камоме це так гарно виходить, але ми також занурюємося в психологічний портрет Річе, який не є простим чи банальним. Вона може заклинати кришталеві стрічки і прагне показати, що їй не потрібно копіювати наявні загальні заклинання, щоби довести свою цінність. Вона намагається чарувати власну магію, яка також може використовуватися в різних ситуаціях. А в інакшому випадку, Річе відштовхує все і всіх навколо, адже травма з минулого міцно тримає дівчину у своїх лещатах.

У цьому томі багато чого відбувається, що, ймовірно, матиме наслідки в подальшому. Ми відкриваємо міфологію і світобудову світу, розуміємо, що в цьому світі чарівників також є досить жахливі вчителі. Це не надто дивно, цілком логічно й реалістично, але контраст між першим вчителем Річе чи теперішнім Юіні досить очевидний. І це дало змогу зрозуміти більше цих героїв. Звісно, не вартує забувати і про Аґатту, адже ми також зрозуміли багато про неї, її мотиви й куди вона прагне рухатися на своєму шляху. За нею цікаво спостерігати.

Але найголовніше для мене — зміна настрою оповіді. З такої розміреної пригодницької оповіді ми переходимо в більш жахливу атмосферу. І після закінчення цього тому, у голові пролітає думка, що насправді цей світ завжди був таким. Несправедливим, жорстоким, страшним… Я не знаю, що нас чекає надалі. Але розвиток подій, герої, світ ще більше інтригують. Та ще Камоме Шірахама підкинула нормальний такий кліфгеґер наприкінці. Ще на останок скажу, що для мене поки це найкращий том. Надіюся надалі буде не згірш.

П.С. Також скажу, що я замовив ексклюзивне лімітоване видання четвертого тому із іншою обкладинкою. Але для всіх перфекціонстів (я також) скажу, що на звороті суперобкладнки є стандартна і ви легко можете обернути, щоб на полиці все виглядало гарно. Та родзинкою ексклюзиву насправді є скетчбук Камоме Шірахама. Одним словом, тішуся.

one of my favorite tropes (is it a trope?) is when the students are left to fend for themselves after their teacher is taken out, and i look forward to seeing what happens next on that front

¡Cómo estoy disfrutando este manga!
Cada vez que me encuentro en bloqueo lector leo algunos tomos y se me pasa.
Tengo que destacar la evolución de los personajes y el tiempo que se toma en desarrollar cada uno de ellos en cada tomo.
La historia es súper tierna y adoro ver a este grupo de niñas crecer y seguir cada una sus sueños individuales pero ayudándose como grupo

Oh, no! An evil agent of Voldemort the brimmed cap with an eyeball design attacks the friends of Harry Potter Coco during the O.W.L. "Sincerity of the Shield" exam. Nice art and good characters make up for the story not breaking any new ground.

It has taken me forever to find volume 4 of this series. I finally found it yesterday while out with my daughter and I snatched it up. I'm so glad to be back in this world. The characters are wonderful and the story is enchanting. I adore the artwork which brings the story to life. This is my favorite Manga series hands down and I can't wait to read the next one.

The snake road was awesome! Aggot, Richeh, and new student get tested and have to use magic their own way to pass the test. The brimmed hats are back at it, learning more about their motivations. Each student has to face their shadow. Great volume with some amazing frameworthy panels

2025 Review: I feel like this is the second volume in a row where the series really shows its darker aspects. There are more serious things at stake here, and even though we're still along for the ride as these apprentices work towards progress and growth (and there are some funny/amazing moments), there's also some heavier things. And honestly, I love the gravitas it gives us as readers - this just continues to draw me in.

i do like how the author, somehow, manages to balance these sweet moments and then just jumps at you with borderline body horror (myb a stretch, but the transformation at the end and the whole backstory of the cave and its people weirdly got to me). i adore the dynamics here and i do gotta say that i was scared richeh will get sidelined as she didn't get that much spotlight until now, but we escaped from that black hole. 10/10 again

Continuing to really like this series, see also my reviews of previous volumes. The art continues to be stellar, the story is exciting, the worldbuilding is intriguing - in this volume there is also magical telecommunication with a telegraph-like device. We get ample character development while the apprentices are trying to get through a trial.

I think now the series also passes the Fries test, because this volume introduces an apprentice who has severe anxiety. Again magic is used as a form of assistive technology to help him deal with his anxiety. However, he gets turned into a monster by one of the enemy witches soon afterward, and the situation is not resolved by the end of the volume. I have a library hold for the next two volumes, so hopefully I'll find out soon enough!

(There is also a third character who might be disabled? Qifrey is really hiding something about his right eye, but I think that might be because he is hiding something about his blood, because his face gets injured and he doesn't want Coco to touch him. We'll see.)

Cautivada, enamorada, ilusionada... y muchos más "-ada" positivos, porque ¡qué maravilla! Siempre me sorprende lo muchísimo que me encantan estos mangas, pero me parece que está todo tan cuidado que ¿cómo no va a ser perfecto? Pase que la estética de por sí ya es maravillosa, pero es que encima los personajes cada vez son más tiernos, la magia, inspiradora, y los temas que se tratan, siempre consiguen que conecte con ellos por completo; en esta ocasión, defender el derecho a ser uno mismo, a utilizar la magia a su manera, sin dejarse menospreciar por otros.
Precioso. ¡Y final dramático y abierto! :O
