A hacker and a pre-med college student make the unlikeliest pair, but beggars can’t be choosers in a nuclear apocalypse. Midge and Danny might have escaped the blast of a nuclear bomb, but they’re anything but safe.
It’s a life and death race against the clock.
With radiation rushing their way in the form of nuclear fallout, two horses and an antiquated carriage are their only means of escape. If they don’t find cover soon, they’ll suffer a slow and agonizing death no medicine can cure.
Could you drop everything to save yourself?
Miles from home and without any friends or family nearby, Midge and Danny will have to rely on the kindness of strangers to survive. If they don’t choose their friends carefully, they might not live long enough to find Midge’s mother or determine if her sister survived.
The attack is only the beginning.
Duck for Cover is book two in Nuclear Survival: Northern Exposure, a post-apocalyptic thriller series following ordinary people struggling to survive after a nuclear attack on the Unites States plunges the nation into chaos.
I really love Harley Tate’s books. The story line with Midge and Danny is really good. I can’t wait for the next book. Looking forward to finding out how it turns out.
I really love Harely Tate's books. I was engrossed in this one too. But I never felt the connections between Midge and Danny. No chemistry and no mention of attraction. I just didn't believe it. I see them as friends, supporting each other, nothing else.
What made me stop reading this was when they were on the road and stopped by some raiders. Midge stepped up and offered what they had in food and the fancy gun Danny had found which saved their lives. She didn't confer with anyone in their small group. After when they were all safe, Danny was distant, she asked why. Danny was concerned that she had just stepped up by herself without consulting him. She apologized and he said it was okay so long as she didn't do it again. Really? In emergent situations she is supposed to have a consultation with her boyfriend? And maybe with the man and woman with the baby who are with them? Let's take a vote, shall we, and decide what to do about this situation we are in that requires immediate response.
So I stopped reading it. I wasn't buying their relationship, whatever it is, and Danny's requiring her to ask him before she acts is just not sitting well with me. She is a woman who has had an entirely different harder experience in life than he has, is a hacker and has information about what is happening and about to happen.
He is a pre-med student. He wants to stop along the way and help every single person who cries out for help. Almost getting them all killed a couple times. She knows they have to focus on their own survival, that stopping to help someone could be a trap or will stretch what resources they have already plus slow them down, trying to get as far away as possible from the nuclear blast. When they do stop to help Danny feels no need to hurry, but takes his time, wants to bring them along, "we can't leave them like that!" and just seems to be completely living outside of reality.
So I gave it a good shot, since I always like this author's books. I read the first book and got more than halfway in the second but I'm just not into the characters. Maybe you will be.
The most frustrating thing in this book is that every single time the two main characters get any sort of advantage it gets taken away from them or used against them practically the next chapter. It got very tiring after the third or fourth time, and by the tenth of eleventh time I was wondering "okay, they got xyz, now how are they going to lose it?"
The series has been an enjoyable journey for me so far. It is fast paced & a genre I like. Spoilers*** Danny & Midge are the main characters for these first 2 books of Northern Exposure. They are conflicted at times, impulsive at times, & generally young & inexperienced with life. Danny is the voice of compassion, while Midge is practical, a thicker skin, & ready to leave everyone behind so she can find her mother. That is where I begin to have a slight problem with the books, I’m longing for some other deeper characters. Those that Danny & Midge do meet are around for a few pages, maybe a chapter or two, then poof, they are gone. We learn only the most basic elements to their life & then we move to another adventure with totally different people. That lends to the fast paced nature of the book which I like but I’d also like to know these other survivors just a bit more.

Loved the story and the characters, can't wait for the next book!
One question: How old is Midge's mom? Midge is 20 so her mom must be 45/50 years old? Why is Dottie (who is the same age as mom) written like she is an 80 year old? I'm thinking 50 year olds, Jennifer Lopez, Jennifer Aniston, Nicole Kidman...again why does Dottie speak as a much older person? Midge also refers to her mother as a "gray haired lady who can barely see over the steering wheel" making it sound like she is a octogenarian, the proverbial Aunt Bee.
The series has been disappointing for me. Others may enjoy it and some is to be expected but there was a lot of violence in this book. The storyline went from intriguing and plausible to less of each the more I read. I’ll read the last in the series because i hate not finishing but if I didn’t have kindle unlimited and had to buy them I probably wouldn’t. If you like less violence with more character development read his after the EMP series. I really enjoyed it.
This started out as a good storyline but seems to be going downhill since. The thing I liked the most is that they are regular people without the usual post apocalyptic military background. Unfortunately the relationship factor seems lost. Midge seems to have zero connection to characters until Danny forces her to and then she is fine. He needs to stop for every person they see no matter what which is ridiculous given the state of the world. And the constant battles are getting old. Are they just unlucky or do they draw criminals like a magnet?
This is only the second book that I have read of Harley Tate and I have loved both of them. I love when I find a new author especially when they've written as many books as Harley Tate. I have loved this book, it wasn't as fast-paced as Take the Hit but the words just flowed. We lost some old characters and picked up some new ones. I'm now ready to read the third and last of the trilogy Ride it Out.
I’ve been enjoying this series too much to slow down and leave a review, but I’m Taking a second to give it five stars and to thank the author for writing such an interesting, fast paced, edge of your seat type of series that is keeping me busy on this stormy day. I already read the southern series, and I didn’t think that this could be anywhere near as good, but it really is. I’m so invested in the characters and their well-being. OK, onto the next one now!
Harley Tate writes some of the best post apocalypse fiction around. She creates believable protagonists and scarey, "realistic" bad guys. The action rolls along at a good clip so you're never bored or bogged down in long winded, angst ridden soliloquy like some authors.
Great book. Couldn't put it down until I finished it. My biggest complaint is I still don't know what happened with Danny, Midge and if her Mom was ever found. I didn't see a sequel so I'll try to remain patient and hopeful. Thank you for being willing to share your stories with us
After reading several of the books, I am somewhat frustrated that the characters are so naive about shooting first where the thugs are obviously a serious threat. Being captured and losing their supplies and weapons makes escape implausible. Their naivete is improbable.
Who attacked us? Did we retaliate? How many countries were destroyed? The story it’s about two people and their search for the woman’s mother. I’m just wondering what happened in the rest of the world I hope book 3 explains that. That’s an exciting story.
The combination of the characters story set against the backdrop of the world we know it, and the underlying cause of the attack, kept me entertained. I cannot wait for book three.
I enjoyed this book because the characters felt real. I would image if I was told that bombs destroyed 25 of US biggest cities, I'd have a hard time believing it. I can't hardly wait for book 3
The main characters really start to develop. The secondary characters are interesting. However the interaction is a little thin. More development of the interaction would really help.
This second book in this series is an interesting story with a different perspective on what might happen in the near future. This story is an exciting continuation of the first book.
The books just flow from one to the next. I love the authors style of writing. Hard facts not just “clean”. You have to read this series. I am a true romance junkies but this is good (clean by sexual nature)
I always have to read your books start to finish. No taking a break! I usually wait until everyone else has gone to bed. I read one of you books and was hooked.
I never sign up for mailing lists but after reading Harley Tate’s other nuclear strike series I signed up immediately so I wouldn’t miss a moment of this one.
Great reading I’m am patiently waiting on the next book in the series. I have read all of Harley’s books so far and will keep reading any more she puts out. I just wish she could write faster. LOL
Book 2 is light years better. If you trundled through book 1 and you're on the fence get off of it and grab this one. It's much more typical of Harley's writing.
The book was slow nothing much really happens just more of the same. Book is short wish it was longer and more info about what happened to their families.
