Rate this book
Four cursed warriors. One vampire-hunting detective. This sexy, kick-ass reverse harem series will keep you up all night...

This boxed set contains all four books in the Her Dark Protectors series: Cursed by Night, Kissed by Night, Hidden by Night, and Broken by Night. If you like snarky detectives, badass warriors, HOT sex scenes, and page-turning action, this is the series for you!

Description from Book One:

My name is Ace Bissett, and I’m a paranormal detective who doesn’t believe in magic.

Or at least, I didn’t before I met them.

The day I inherited my aunt’s old house, everything changed. One moment, I was convinced that magic was a hoax. The next, I’m surrounded by four winged, fanged, ridiculously hot guys who are definitely not human, and who insist that I'm the only one who can break the curse that binds them to the night.

I know I should run far, far away from this hot mess, but there's a connection between us I can't deny. I'm seeing things I can't explain, feeling things that don't make sense. The detective in me has never been able to resist a mystery, and this one is just begging me to dig in.

But all that will have to wait, because there’s a new threat stalking my city. One with a taste for blood and bone, unable to be killed or captured by normal human means.

It’s a good thing I’ve got four new roommates to help me hunt them down. But even if I didn’t, I’d figure out a way. Because I never give up. I never give in. And I always protect what’s mine.

Fantastic series!

I love how these books blend the mystery and action of police detective work alongside hot and steamy reverse harem romance, with a big dose of magical intrigue. It's crime-busting, mystery-solving, magic-making, paranormal greatness!

I honestly loved these books because as much paranormal romance I read, I haven’t come across gargoyles and I think it’s a great idea. I loved all the guys and the different personalities. Ace was a fantastic female heroine. The characters were well thought out as was their world. To be honest I would love more books with these characters. Bring back Ace. There was something I felt was left not discussed. She talked about having kids at one point and how they would have to talk about that when the curse broke but they never did! Jac deserves a baby.

Loved it!

Highly recommend getting .this boxed set since there are cliffhangers at the end of books 2 and 3. The characters are well written and a lot of fun. They are an interesting bunch trying to find the answers to the question of how to not be gargoyles.

Interesting

Love the guys. Each one is completely different. Wish there was more interaction with all of them. Ace is pretty awesome. Cop turned witch. Pretty much unstoppable

“Her Dark Protectors” series was an enjoyable read – imaginative storylines throughout the four novels, nicely written main characters, and a great detective novel vibe (unusual, I think, for a paranormal, reverse harem romance). Unfortunately, for me, there were too many grammatical/incorrect word usage errors and continuity issues for a rating greater than 3 stars.

What kept me reading:

All of the books read like mystery/detective novels. This was wonderful for me because I am a huge fan of the late Sue Grafton and I have to say that the authors of “Her Dark Protectors” wrote in a style that was reminiscent of Ms. Grafton’s Kinsey Milhone “alphabet” novels – except that Ms. Grafton wrote in first person PAST tense.

There was enough romance/erotica in the series to satisfy (pun intended), but not so much that the plot suffered, which is a huge plus in my mind. In fact, one of my favorite passages was a musing by the main heroine (“Acelina” or “Ace”) about one of the main heroes (“Jacques”): “I never knew someone could do that to me…to be both the shelter and the storm.” Nicely done!

I also loved the characters – they thoroughly entranced me and I liked how the various relationships played out. Because the authors created relatable characters who never strayed too far from their original personalities, none of their conversations or actions jolted me out of the story.

What made me question the investment of my time:

The errors snatched me away from the story – repeatedly. Throughout the book, incorrect words were used, such as “illusive” instead of the correct “elusive” and “illicit” instead of the correct “elicit.” Unfortunately, there were more of these type errors than I could easily stomach.

Continuity errors included one of the main heroes (who are winged) putting on a T-shirt BEFORE he puts on an amulet that temporarily gets rid of his wings; a comment in Book 2 regarding how much the air conditioner rattles the house, but in Book 3 there are multiple comments about the LACK of AC; and most distressing, an antagonist’s name gets changed from “Marissa” to “Melissa.” There were more of these types of errors than I have listed here and, each time I ran across one, I stopped and thought, “Wait a minute, that’s not right, is it?” I found myself repeatedly quitting the novels to search back through previous pages, trying to make sure my recollections were accurate. This isn’t a good look for ANY novel.

I also would have liked to have seen more of Ace developing her talents as a witch. Especially in the last book, it felt as though this heroine went from novice to superhero in the blink of an eye. Additionally, as a corollary to this criticism, I did feel a little short-changed by Book 4. I really wanted to spend more time with these characters, but felt as though the authors were sprinting to the finish line while leaving the poor readers in the dust.

Finally, the narrative voice pushed one of my “meh” buttons. I really do not care for novels written in first person present tense, but my preferred third person omniscient seems rare these day in this particular genre. In my mind, first person present tense should be relegated to recipe how-tos or lectures, as in “First, I measure a cup of flour…” or “I need to find the lowest common denominator before I can…” – but this is just my preference.

In closing, while I did like the novels in the series – and wouldn’t advise against reading them – I can’t wholeheartedly recommend them because I was so jolted from thorough enjoyment by the aforementioned errors – especially those in the continuity department.

Sadly, this isn’t the first series I’ve read that has suffered from a lack of proofreading/editing. It makes me wonder what is happening in book publishing these days – and, more importantly, what can be done to rectify the situation.

I'm DNFing at 80%. I really tried, I just can't stand it anymore.

I'm giving 2 stars instead of 1 because I listened to the audio books and the narration was also a major contributing factor in why I could not finish these books. I think it's only fair to be a bit more charitable as a result. That being said, there were a lot of glaring editing and continuity issues throughout all 4 books.

With regards to the story, I thought the premise had potential despite being copaganda. However, the incompetence and gun happy nature of the FMC felt pretty accurate and on brand considering she's a cop. For someone who prided themselves on their detective skills. the FMC was obnoxiously oblivious. I also found the FMC to be pretty immature and generally unlikable. I quickly found myself uninterested in her well being and more focused on the crime solving aspect of the series.

As irritating as the FMC was, I was willing to try to push through because I'm a sucker for a spicy reverse harem, but even that left much to be desired. The harem was completely lacking in depth. There was no real character development, even for Jacques(who she irritatingly decides to nickname Jack) despite the weak attempt at a backstory presented. The way the "spicy" scenes were written actually grossed me out. The language used to describe each scene, coupled with the monotonous narration style made me want to gag(not in the good way). This wasn't because it was salacious(I actually would have appreciated that), but because the scenes read like bottom tier wattpad.

After a point I realized I didn't even care to find out how the story ended, so I gave up.

Will not read this author again.

Enjoyed immensely!

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. I didn't really think I'd hate it either, lol, but I loved it. A few Templar flashbacks would've been interesting though. Very well written. Not many mistakes as far as grammar or spelling goes. One character's name changed in the last book is the only thing that really sticks out. It started out Marissa and then became Melissa. Was not a big issue for me but some people overreact to some things like that. The story was filled with a perfect blend of heat, action, and a lil mystery. I would highly recommend to anyone who enjoys reading paranormal stories. And as an extra side note - these books don't end with cliffhangers if you just want to buy them separately. You'd probably get a better deal with the bundle like I did, but if you don't want to "commit" to the full story then that's something to look into. Oh! I almost forgot... This is an RH (reverse harem - for those who might not be familiar with that it's one woman with more than one partner), but there isn't any group sex. They have sex separately.... except for the twin sandwich a couple times, lol. Still good in my opinion. ;-) Hot gargoyles :-D

Interesting story

Overall, I did enjoy the story. I thought the storyline was interesting, the characters were written very well, and there was enough plot that made me want to keep listening to the story. The only thing I would have to say is that it really didn't need to be four books, some of the story was, I don't know, stretched out I guess and I feel that I would have been frustrated purchasing all four books separately because I purchased them on eBook and Audible so I can go between the two. I'm glad they offered the box set, and I got it on sale. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the male narrator. He is new to me, and I will be looking at other books that he has narrated. I did like the female narrator, but I don't feel that she had a lot of different voices for the characters. I also felt like some of the editing was a little choppy with the narration. With that being said, I did enjoy the story and would recommend someone to listen to it if they have time.

Great set!

Ace Bissett, snarky homicide detective with the Philadelphia PD. She’s the one that gets all the “strange” cases. And always finds the person responsible. Nothing supernatural involved. She eats, breathes, and lives for her job. Driven to rid the world of all the evil she finds so no other young child wakes up to find their parents on the floor in a pool of blood.
Her only family, her aunt passed away and left her the huge Victorian style mansion. Something she doesn’t want. But as it turns out, the house isn’t the only thing she gets…surprise after surprise is in store for her.
Gargoyles, witches, and lots of steamy, spicy action!
Come along and enjoy the ride!

When Detective Acelina Bissett, better known as Ace, inherits a big old house from an aunt she'd never heard of, she wasn't expecting to inherit four big old gargoyles that come to life at night along with it. Jacques, Hasan, Thomas and Gilbert are just as surprised to be woken up as she is to find them shirtless in her front yard just after sunset. There are a lot more surprising things in this world that she wasn't expecting as well. Time to reevaluate herself and everything she thought she ever knew. Who better to help than her new found gargoyles, who were Templar Knights before being cursed about a thousand years ago?
This is the story of Ace and Her Dark Protectors. Great writing, wonderful characters and a very imaginative story line. Read and enjoy!

Awesomeness

I absolutely loved it. All of the books actually. The storyline is great the intimacy is great every girls dream right.? And I love a good mystery so all four of the books kept me quite enthralled. And the ending was great even though I’m sad to see them go it was not an abrupt end it was a nice gentle let down. Although I would love to hear more from them definitely if you’re in The mood the storyline is awesome. I thought that’s a lot, all four and I think that’s awesome sauce. And a reverse ménage in a great way that was very tasteful and not tacky. Very yummy.

Great Story

I loved this series. The character development was amazing and the author has a way of keeping you on the edge of your seat. It’s definitely different from other fantasy series I’ve read but that’s the best part about it. I can’t say anything about the adult rated scenes because I skipped over it all so I’ll let someone else speak to the quality of those. But the story itself was incredible. Ace really goes through some growth and there are twists and turn that I definitely didn’t see coming which was refreshing.

Narration: 🎙🎙🎙🎙
Spice:🌶🌶🌶🌶
Action:👊🏽👊🏽👊🏽
Troupe: reverse harem, gargoyles
Triggers: none I can think of

I stopped listening at book two chapter 19. I guess I was expecting more. First, it felt like insta love. Then the story felt repetitive.

The narration was good (duet narration) and there was plenty spice but, the writing is where the story fell short to me. The end of book one fell flat to me. I was left feeling like “that’s it?” . There was not enough chemistry between the characters. I kept thinking there were only 3 gargoyles (Jack and the twins) when there’s actually 4.

I really enjoyed this series. If you enjoy paranormal, romance, and mystery all rolled into one, you should read this series. It was fun to see Ace find herself and make real connections. As a paranormal fan, I enjoyed the nods to Supernatural and so many other shows. Also, I think it's important to note that sometimes, why choose books get knocked for not having much plot, that was not the case with this series. The series definitely included spice, but the plot was primary. If the authors decided to continue writing the series, I would totally read them.

Good

The only problem with this series is the flow sometimes. I'm not really sure how to explain it. One minute, you are reading about Ace about to do something, and then all of a sudden, out of the blue, she is doing something completely different. It made things confusing at times and made you feel like you were missing a big part of the story. Like the author got tired of writing, so she just skipped over it.

I really did like the books. I just felt like important parts were missed or not explained well.

possible spoilers

This series started out so strong. I read the 4 books back to back.
Things rushed, and then slowed down too much. The spice started to seem very “copy & paste”
I wish there was more of a balance of Ace and the guys. The curse breaking was so anti climactic I was so disappointed, held on through four books for a wee paragraph of a broken curse, then a half done explanation followed pages later.
Such a wonderful concept, loved the parallel of Supernatural, wish the execution of the story was better.

Really good but...

I enjoyed the first three books but was disappointed in the fourth and final book. There seemed to be a serious lack of editing in the last book, for instance in book one a character had the name “Marissa” but by book 4 her name was “Melissa”. Also there was a lot of repetitive phrasing. It seemed rushed at the end and therefore was a bit of letdown as if the authors were tired of the story and just wanted it done.

Wasn’t sure how to rate this one. It definitely held my interest but I wanted more out of the books. I felt most of the story was on repeat a lot of the time. Everyday mimicked the day before etc. Kind of silly that I can tell you every meal they ate throughout the series. I think the focus could have been elsewhere. Without giving anything away, I was frustrated we waited until the end of the book to really get somewhere, and it wasn’t as exciting as I’d hoped it would be.

Remake of my favorite cartoon but for adults!

Seeing as how Gargoyles was my favorite cartoon (besides Sailor Moon, of course) I can understand why I was so drawn to this series. I’ve had a crush on Goliath since I was around ten and I guess my infatuation with all things wings is intact. Good storyline and loved the characters although for a detective Ace seemed to miss a lot of the obvious.

I can't knock this series as it has kept me somewhat sane in these current circumstances and I have enjoyed reading the books. However I did find it a tad repetitive and I must admit I was expecting more from Ace. I was hoping we would get to see her grow with her powers and become this all powerful witch. I also wanted to see the relationships with the "boys" become something a little more than how it ended.
I feel it all ended a little suddenly and I'm left a little disappointed.

Worth a read

I really liked book 1 I haven't read nothing liken it before was really gripping . Was ace and jac gonna have the same as ace and the other 3. Then book 2 was good kinda connected to book 1 . But by the time book 4 came I did think it was a bit far fetched . I'm glad max was able to break the curse and Trent got his comeuppance . Glad I read the books was a good read.

Interesting series concept - non-magic-believer Ace is a detective, receive old house from unknown aunt and suddenly her beliefs are shot to heck! First, her gargoyle statues come to life - as gorgeous men- yum! Then she finds out vampires, witches and ghosts are real! The first 2 books were great but I felt a little let down on the conclusion. There was enough info and closure for me - it seemed a little rushed, but still an entertaining read

Captivating series

I enjoyed this series. It had drama, romance and for paranormal lovers a whole lot of weird. The idea of multi partner romances may be unusual for some but seriously who wouldn’t want to be worshipped by more than one devastatingly handsome hero.
Give it a read I’m sure you will love this book set. The characters are charming and the storyline is captivating.

A Box of magical, sexy fun

This boxed set was completely enjoyable from beginning to end. The plot line is a true mystery that carries through the series. The characters are wonderfully rich, their stories very compelling. If you are looking for a steamy romance to warm up your nights then this is a series for you! Well written and fast paced, my only true problem is that I am left wanting more. A few more would be outstanding!

Ace is my hero!!

When I started this book, I knew I’d be in for quite an adventure. I loved Ace’s headstrong, can-do attitude. It was quite refreshing to have a FMC handle herself the way Ace did. The spice was fantastically steamy and I loved getting to know the guys through out the books- however- I do wish we could have had more peeks into their pasts than the little snippets we got here and there. But all in all, well done.

I am listening to the audio version.
The story has potential but the writing could be better.
The male narrator is FANTASTIC different accents, different characters - he has it down to a T.
The female narrator... baaaa... she is so monotonous she could be an AI-voice.

The writing is annoyingly beginner-style which is a shame since the story has potential. I wish the author had invested more time in revision, added more action beats and more variety to the romantic scenes / dialogues etc. all in all, the writing isn't taking me into the story. I didn't forget that I am on a page therefore I take another star off.

I couldn't put these books down.. Twist and turns and sexy.. I was on the edge of my seat at times. Love, Lust, Tragedy and revenge. I love when you feel like your right there with the characters. This author has that amazing talent, and you can't help but be dragged with her writing style!!

Pretty good read.

I liked this series a lot. Your characters were well developed as well as the storyline. It lagged a bit between the action scenes and drug a little but you already had me locked in from the first book so I had to see where the story went and it helped a bit that your heroin was a super badass witch.
