Icehome #5

Hannah's Hero

Rate this book
All I want is Hannah.

We've resonated, but she avoids me. She has made it very clear that she wants no mate, whether he has two arms or four. But when others leave the Icehome beach camp for a getaway to a fruit-filled cave, Hannah wants to go, and she needs a companion.

Me.

For the first time, we talk...and I realize my female isn't as good as ignoring me as she thinks. She watches me with hungry eyes. She blushes at my bold words. When I touch her? She no longer runs away.

It is time I show her that a Strong Arm hunter can be the right mate for her, and that four arms can hold her twice as closely as two.

Ruby Dixon is an author of Science Fiction Romance. She likes fated mates, baby-filled epilogues, and cinnamon roll heroes. She also likes to write biographies of herself in the third person, because it feels more important that way.

Ruby also loves coffee and dirty books and will probably be a cat lady at some point. :)

Maybe the timing for reading this was wrong, but I wanted to slap the idiot Hannah so many times!
Her stubborness was over the top! How can she not understand the word stranded???? Is she an idiot? How can she not understand that being on a strange plant without even a space ship makes it impossible to return to Earth?!!!??? She's supposedly intelligent enough to write a bestseller, but she doesn't have enough imagination, intelligence, common sense to understand that??!!!

Poor J'shel... resonating to such a stupid woman... I was sorry for him...

I hope the next heroine will be better!

Ice Planet Vacation!

The following ratings are out of 5:
Narration: 🎙🎙🎙🎙
Romance: 💚🖤💙❤️💜
Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📙📘📔
World building: 🪐🛸🚀☄️🌒
Character development: 😞👽🥰👽😌

The heroine: Hannah - she has always had low self esteem and felt like she wasn’t good enough because others were always prettier, skinnier and able to do things she wasn’t. Though she was about to become a huge deal on Earth and she takes longer than most to get over the idea that she can’t return home. She tries to take her mind off her homesickness by keeping track of the camp’s supplies and suffers from anxiety because there are so many people in their camp and not a larger store of food for all of them during the brutal season. She resonated to J'shel, but doesn’t want it, so she rebuffs him.

The Hero(es): J'shel - He is one of the ‘Strong Arm’ tribe, which means he has four arms. He thinks it was his fault that his tribe mate N'dek lost one of his legs and feels tremendous guilt for it. He resonated to Hannah early on but as she ignores him, he stays away from her but watches her and looks for solutions to his predicament.

The Story: Hannah thinks nobody understands what she is going through. She feels that she isn’t athletic, has no life skills and feels like she can’t contribute. Her anxiety and her obsessive need to control a situation had inadvertently made people dislike her. She is extremely attracted to J’shel but doesn’t know him and just wants to go home.

I loved the fact that J’shel is so patient and understanding, but makes no bones about telling Hannah that she isn’t the only one feeling loss. While she is mourning her home and lost career, he is mourning his entire family who died when the volcano erupted and his home when it erupted again.

Like most of the others in this series, this is told in dual points of view via dual narration by Sean Crisden and Felicity Munroe. These narrators do a great job, but I wish these were done in duet narration where the female narrator does all the female parts and the male does all the male parts. Like all the other books, I like the fact that there is some adventure to a cave that is like a hothouse jungle, a great story where the characters grow and change.

So these books have been my in between guilty pleasure reads for a couple years now. This series is the same old same old from the connected series but I was still liking it. But this one was awful. No story really and this new crop of women on the planet are awful. They are annoying, selfish, self centered mean girls ( at least half of them ) and I could care less about their stories now. Hannah in this one was awful. I feel bad these guys are stuck with these immature bitches. I’ll read the next one but if it stinks like this one...I may have to say goodbye to my beloved planet blue balls and just read her spinoffs. It was a good run though guys. 👍🏻

This is one of the longest books set on the ice planet, but not enough happens in it to justify the length. The last 10% was pretty good though.

J'shel was sweet, but kind of bland to read about. Hannah was obnoxious, rude, and uninterested in J'shel for half of the book. Then she's instantly happy and head-over-heals for J'shel, which felt instalove-y because they didn't seem to get to know each other much before they were "in love".

Hannah and J’shel

💙 Bookish Thoughts
Oh Hannah, she definitely made this entire situation way harder than it needed to be. She always drives me nuts at the beginning of the book but she figures it out by the end. I absolutely love J’shel from the very beginning. It’s always a surprise how much of a dirty talker he is ☺️

This book always feels like an adventure with the trip to the fruit cave and Old Grandfather.

✨ Favorite Quote
“One of the best things about J’shel is how happy he is as a person. It evens out how salty I am.”

Hannah's character annoyed me in earlier books, but I was hoping (like Dixon has been able to do before), reading her story would make me more sympathetic to her antics and understand her a lot better to even possibly come to like her in the end. Yeah.... that did not happen. She was whiny, bitchy, and downright mean to J'shel (who literally everyone liked and who never pressured or bothered her but was there for her despite her bratty behavior). Some steamy parts, a new threat was introduced, but never got to really like this h or care much about her as I have the others.

Plot --- 2.5/5
Main Characters --- Hannah = 1/5; J'shel = 5/5 (v-card holder in this one)
Supporting Cast --- 3.5/5
Steam Level* --- 4/5
Violence --- nothing overly graphic or major
Language --- yes! (lots of f-bombs and c-bombs)
POV --- Dual

*Note that steam level is not a rating so much as a how hot was it: 0/5 - clean; 1/5 - mild (nothing descriptive); 2/5 - 3rd base action/1 home run; 3/5 - now we're getting somewhere (a couple of full-on steamy scenes); 4/5 - yes please! (erotica territory); 5/5 - they did EVERYTHING in this one, y'all

Another meh.

My problem was not so much Hannah's awful personality, per other reviews, but that Hannah is not the first h of her type in the author's many (..many...) series. She's actually not the worst.

You can't as an author create a race of Hs like the IPBs and then set them up with hs like Hannah. These Hs have no understanding of or defence against their kind of treatment. The h is somehow allowed to behave badly because inevitably she will accept resonance and suddenly the reader is speeding to a HEA, and there is no need for the h to apologise or bother to understand where the H was coming from in his method of trying to encourage resonance.

Surely having written well into double-digit something, the author would have finessed this aspect of her series by now.

That the author continues to write Hannahs and then close their stories with "Acknowledgements" apologising and justifying their awfulness, is additionally frustrating.

For those reasons I also have absolutely no interest in reading the stories involving Bridget or Callie. I don't care if they redeem themselves after the fact. Their behaviour leading up to resonance still counts.

I follow the author on Facebook and her fan involvement is fantastic, but I think the extreme fan-girling in that arena significantly impacts the quality of her work.

RUBY, YOU ARE KILLING ME!

I went from thinking that taking a break from the book community was the worse thing I ever did to thinking it was the best thing I ever did. You wanna know why? Because I get to binge all the RD books that I've missed out on! If you have never read a book by Ruby, what are you waiting on? I'm serious!

The blurb of this book gives you all you need to know about this story. Yes it follows the usual plot of cootie, resonate, avoid, and snog. But these stories are so much more than that! I'll spare you from my annoying repetitive fangirling. Just know that these books never disappoint.

Hannah (the heroine/FMC) was a annoying character to read.
She was whiny/bitchy and negative.
She has issues with internalized fat-phobia and internalized fat-shaming/body-shaming.
She is also very self-deprecating about her body.

Hannah was not the only one that lost everything and had a career.
Exploring how the humans anxiety and their feelings of grief after being kidnapped etc.is an interesting part of this series..........but Hannah's losses felt very superficial.

The others(humans and aliens) …. had been slaves…. had lost limbs, had lost family members etc.
But they did not act like Hannah (or Maddie).

Hannah was unlikable, and selfish/self-centered and treated J'Shel abominably.(and she did not deserve J'Shel)

J'Shel (the hero) is a little clueless ...but he really makes the book without him this book would be a ½ star - 1 star.

J'Shel was sweet, caring, and very patient and fascinating/interesting....and he deserved way better then someone like negative Hannah.

*This is a story/book I will Not reread in the future*

Rating:
5 awesome stars

Trigger:
Lots of strange fruit eating (oh wait, that's not a trigger)

Short review:
This was awesome and so much more. This is what IPB or Icehome should be like. All frustration of Marlene and Zennek's story - gone.
When it started I thought it was just typical IPB, you know resonance and khui and mating and I skipped but story definitely taken different turn when out frustrating couple (read Hannah) reached to fruit cave. Both are likable characters and new twist was breath of fresh air, I am sure we all have been waiting for.

Yes but only if you are up to speed with Icehome series

Aftermath: (possible spoilers)
There are lot of loose threads and with Devi and N'dek, Bridget and A'tam situation and I would say that - keep them coming!

My star is completely for the set up for the next book and J'Shel, and only because I feel sorry for him for resonating with Hannah. I think exploring how people deal with their anxiety and their feelings of grief is an important part of this series, but Hannah's losses felt so superficial that it made it difficult to take her seriously, especially when I doubt she was the only one who had a mindblowingly amazing career. I ended up skimming through the majority of this book and it is definitely not one I would ever revisit. The Author's Note acknowledging that Hannah is fairly unlikable made no difference either. She was unlikable, and selfish. I also hated how she was willing to sacrifice Taushaun to Grandfather, suggesting multiple times that he go. What about Brooke? Pretty sure she wouldn't have felt the same. So, yep, not a fan and, as I write this, I've decided to drop from 2 stars to 1 because Hannah annoys me so much. Fingers crossed we get a more engaging heroine next time.

Love Ruby

I love this author, I have read every single book and have reread them too. I love this series but Hannah was a little difficult for me. She annoyed me but I understood where she was coming from to a point and understood what Ruby was trying to do with the character. I look forward to continuing the series. But I was halfway through the book and was like why doesn’t N’dek have a prosthetic and have one of the girls be the one who makes it for him as an OT or a PT from our world ya know? And there it is 😁

Ms Ruby Dixon, please stop going into my head, dragging out all my secret fantasies (okay, they aren't that secret) and then release them for public consumption. Actually, scratch that. Please continue because there isn't a single thing I don't love about these books. We have:A gorgeous behorned and blue alien with 4 arms (the arms thing is a relatively new fantasy of mine)A curvy heroine finding it a little difficult to fit inCave shenanigansWhat more could I ask for?I am really enjoying the IceHome series, there are so many things going on! We have an entire new tribe of people, all from different places coming together as a community. So, not only do you have the dynamics of the romantic relationship to look forward to, but it's also interesting watching as the characters try to find a place in their new home.If you already love Ruby Dixon's books then you have probably already read this - I know I read it the day it came out - if not you need to give her a try. She does great alien sci fi romance, which are perfect for introducing newbies to the genre. Soon, she'll have you gazing longingly at the sky dreaming of horns and spurs!

Hannah’s Hero is book five in the Icehome series by Ruby Dixon.

I enjoy returning to Dixon’s icee world. The Icehome series features a whole new tribe in the same world as her Ice Barbarians series. There is a lot going on in this series. The new tribe is trying to get situated and they have new challenges to figure out.

J’shel is our sexy four armed blue alien. I loved him. He’s sweet, kind, caring and patient. He is everything a woman could dream of.

Hannah is our curvy human who’s finding it hard to fit in. I wasn’t a fan of her. She’s having trouble adjusting to the new life and coming to terms with not going home. She was very controlling and for me she brought the book down.

The romance takes a while to bloom. Hannah fights the mate bond. It took her and J’shel leaving the beach for them to actually start talking to each other and working out their romance. The sexy times are always steamy and hot in the Icehome series.

Hannah’s Hero was an ok read. We do get a cliffhanger for upcoming romances and I'm curious to see what's next. Ruby Dixon writes fun, sexy, & enjoyable sci-fi romance. I recommend this author and her work.

So I’ll admit Hannah was certainly not a favorite character of mine. I wanted to throttle her stubborn ass for the first half of the book. But like every single Ruby book, I was sad to see it end and I’m eager for whatever comes next. Hannah denies her place on the planet for longer than she should. Her life at home was about to turn her into a superstar and she’s having a hard time giving up the thought of becomign famous. Sure it may seem a little vain but from what I see of Hannah’s character, her anxiety about herself makes her bossy to others and drives her need to control order in her life to stop it from getting out of control. She finally had a chance to become someone people loved, not talked about behind her back or be called bossy and controlling. Unfortunately for Hannah and her mate, it takes her quite awhile for her reality check to hit.

We got a little more insight into future characters and personally I most intrigued by Devi, a science nerd who views the Ice Planet as a giant Petri dish. There were so many taunts and hints as to other characters such a Bre-shit lol and her regrets over hooking up with Atam I believe. With all these new characters and personalities it’s becomimg a crazy world. I absolutely loved the return of the fruit cave, full of heat and humidity, all types of growing fruits and a beautiful waterfall and swimming pool. Nothing sounds better for life on an ice planet. Once the big bad of the story is out of the picture I’d certainly ask my mate if we could live there lol

Oh, man. Poor J'shel. Like all the Ice Planet/Icehome men, he's a total sweetheart and Hannah's avoidance of him hurts a bit. Because, you know, resonance is a force of nature on this planet and not fulfilling it is physically painful.

Not that Hannah's TRYING to hurt him, she's just not ready to let go of the idea of returning to earth at some point and giving into this driving force that is pushing her toward J'shel feels a lot like giving up on that possibility to her. So she avoids and tries to push her dude away.

But J'shel is patient. SO FREAKING PATIENT. A little stubborn, too. Okay, maybe a lot stubborn. He's not willing to give up on his mate despite her actions and his persistence and kindness pay off. BIG TIME.

One thing I love about this series (besides the aliens, guys. Because, yes, I REALLY love them.) is how it continues to evolve and show us new facets of this world. There's more to it than just snow and ice and dangerous creatures. There's a whole world out there and we've only been shown a tiny part of it so far. THERE'S SO MUCH POTENTIAL. It makes me giddy with delight. (Devi, I'm looking at you and your scientific ramblings, here. Your observations are giving me the vapors!)

I don’t know why most people don’t like Hannah, I’d be her friend 🌷and I’m more the type that someone should know a tally of the inventory, just maybe not daily…lol
J’shel definitely is “the most patient of males”, poor bugger. I did enjoy the “Boops” 🤭😁 love his naughty talk 💋💋💋

Question: why doesn’t Ashta turn into his massive dragon and go eliminate “Old Grandfather/Grandmother aka BigBird” 🤨

I actually might have b*tch slapped Penny when she tells Hannah to “Take it outside.” for crying in the cave after a kind-of-nightmare, I may also drag her out of the cave and see how she feels about being cast out…. Where’s the compassion??!? 😠😡🤬🤬🤨

Sometimes I love how literal these guys are:
Bridget-“go f*ck yourself!”
A’tam- “That is not even possible and you know it!” A’tam roars back. “I cannot f*ck myself, female!” 🤣🤣🤣

😍 I can’t explain it, but I totally sigh with happiness:
“Are you ready for my tongue?”
“I don’t think I’ve ever been asked that.”
“Good,” he says, voice soft but strangely possessive. “You are mine now, H’nah. You give your tongue to no one but me.” 🫠🫠🫠

Hannah is different than pretty much every other IPB heroine because she is actually very upset about losing her life back home on earth because she was about to come into massive professional success. She’s rude and anxious about living the barbarian lifestyle and doesn’t bond with the other tribespeople. Her resonance mate, J’shell, has also recently lost his entire home and before that, his entire family, and he does a great job of sympathizing with her loss while also not minimizing her pain. So that was definitely the highlight. But while she initially fights it, eventually resonance becomes too strong to overcome and this book ends up predictably settling in with Hannah getting preggo and in love with her mate just like all the other books. Introducing a woman who didn’t want an alien baby because it would ruin any chance of her ever returning home to earth (no matter how impossible that would be) and eventually giving in was just kind of depressing. I would have preferred to not have this kind of character introduced into this world as it definitely suspends my disbelief that all these women are perfectly happy leaving everything behind for this very difficult barbarian planet lifestyle. It’s established early on in the series, rather unbelievably, that none of them had close family or friends on earth. Introducing someone who longs for her professional success and can never go back to it is just as world breaking to me as a character missing an earthly loved one.

I adore Ruby Dixon's Ice Planet Barbarians and Icehome...and her dragons....and this would have been a 5 stars for me if I hadn't had to struggle so much with Hannah ...the heroine. To say that she is shallow is an understatement. She is mean and selfish, and a BITCH! And even though her actions are explained and understood it made her extremely unlikable.

Meanwhile ...the hero, J'shel, is totally wonderful...tender, respectful, sweet, sexy, giving...forgiving...way too good for Hannah...she should have had to crawl to him...just my opinion.

We get lots of IP people and scenery and the story continues...I just love these people. Even the ones that I don't. I am so looking forward to more from this wonderful world and it's wonderful blue aliens.

Hannah and J’Shel finally get their book! After avoiding him for a while, it was fun to finally see these two give in to resonance.

Hannah is curvy and didn’t feel like she fit in with the rest of the girls or the aliens, so she started keeping track of supplies instead, something she was comfortable with and good at. J’Shel is part of the Strong-Arm clan and has 4 arms, and of course is a sweet and attentive mate. Hannah and J’Shel both deliver on the dirty talking. Their times together in the fruit cave were 🔥!

The story did kind of drag for a bit in this one for me. But some moments I did like: hearing Devi’s scientific findings and interest of the planet (her comparisons to dinosaurs on earth were fascinating and I hope we hear more from her later), the “Ice Planet Olympics” that take place at camp before Hannah and J’Shel head out on their adventure sounded hilarious.

Ruby Writes Another One

I love Ruby Dixon and all her characters even if I don't like the character. In Hannah's Hero Ruby writes a character who is insecure and reacts to that insecurity by being bossy and trying to manage everything making herself less than everybody's favorite Icehome citizen. Hannah may not be likeable but she is believable in her behavior. I may not have agreed with Hannah and at one point I may have actually blurted out "Get over it!" at my kindle. But, isn't it a sign of great writing when the reader is drawn in to the story to that extent. Ruby Dixon truly excels at writing believable characters in fantastical circumstances. Reading any one of her books is truly a joy.

The story of author Hannah and strong arm J’shel. A solid addition to the series. Hannah was not my favourite. As the author says in her note, not everyone can be kickass. Sigh.

I really love it when the heroine develops throughout the book and finds their skill. I particularly like it if they turn out to be a great hunter capable of surviving without having to be looked after. I love the idea that you don’t know you’re good at something until there’s nothing else to do but survive. Hannah was not this person.

But I get that you need a mix.

I did like her though and understand her anxieties and everything she had lost. J’shel was sweet and patient. I loved it when they finally got together and I’m really looking forward to the next instalment.

I love Ruby’s books. Hannah struggles with being on the ice planet and the loss of her long waited for career. As with most humans being told resonance decides can be hard to deal with as well. Especially since the men are so excited to be with someone when they’d previously had no hope of a mate. This story gives the background as to why Hannah is the way she is and how she copes. Everyone copes differently and it takes all kinds to make the village work. I’m glad that she finds her feet both in her relationship and in the village. I wonder how Old Grandfather/mother will affect the village also. Hoping everyone stays safe. Looking forward to continued saga of Icehome and the people.

Original read: 2019, 2 stars
First re-read: 2022, audiobook

So this was the last book I read in the IPB/IH universe and I guess I disliked it so much I stopped caring about new releases?😅 I definitely still agree with my 2019 rating, Hannah was v annoying and omfg the audiobook narrator reeeeally leaned into that by giving Hannah the most annoying valley girl voice I’ve ever heard. Torture. Overall, this book was just not the greatest. I did like Hannah’s reason for wanting to return to earth haha I wonder if there will ever be books on the ice planet… I suppose maybe I’ll find out as I start reading the books I’ve never read in these series before.
