I’m so glad that a friend recommended this book to me. It’s great. It’s the story of Mary Ann, a young girl who, in 1851, sets off with her family, in a wagon train bound for California. She was kidnapped and raised by Indians, then fostered by a Mormon family, and when she discovered the father had taken a fancy to her, she runs away. In time she becomes a prostitute in the makeshift towns set up to supply the making of the railroads.
The book has humour and many spicy scenes as Mary Ann negotiates her way through the hardships of frontier life and love! But it’s also a fascinating dip into the history of that era, in particular the railroads and their construction.
Recommended.
