The thirsty boom towns of Florida are just across the water. The Ridley brothers have plenty of liquor and a fast boat. Easy money. But they’re about to learn easy money is never easy…
The Bahamas, 1924. War veteran Colin Ridley lives a rootless life in Nassau. His brother Stephen seethes with resentment on the family’s struggling farm. But they have one thing in common: they're both broke. So the brothers set aside their differences to run contraband booze to the speakeasies on the Florida coast.
The ocean has become an outlaw frontier where smugglers and pirates play a cat and mouse game with the Coast Guard. And the danger’s even greater when they reach land. Facing ruthless gangsters, a corrupt Sheriff, a beautiful woman with her own agenda, and a killer storm, the Ridley brothers are forced to make strange alliances in a struggle that could make them very rich…or send them to the bottom of the sea.

Growing up in rural Virginia, Mark Parragh seized on stories—spy stories in particular—to escape the isolation and monotony of real life. He grew up with a deep love for old James Bond movies and Mission Impossible reruns on TV, and survived on a cache of forgotten paperbacks he discovered in the attic. He devoured books by Alistair MacLean, Eric Ambler, and Robert Ludlum when he was clearly too young and impressionable to be reading such things.
Mark Parragh is the author of the John Crane series of spy thrillers. He currently lives in a much less rural part of Virginia with his wife and young daughter.
One of the characters could have been James Bond's grandfather.
Some upfront stuff: This historical fiction book has violence, mild adult language, and some subtle scenes of an intimate nature.
When circumstances beyond their control force two brothers together to run liquor to the Florida Coast, they each approach this dangerous lifestyle in different ways. World War I veteran, Colin prefers caution. Stephen, the farmer, wants to live in the moment. Will their differences be a hindrance or a help in their new career?
I really enjoyed this book. Scenes from the first chapter put me in mind of a James Bond movie. Then I remembered the story is set in the 1920s. Naturally, my fertile imagination wondered if Mr. Ridley was James Bond's grandfather.
