My Rating: 3.5 Stars!

Perfect reading when time is short and missing out on some potentially fascinating details, Jordan Elizabeth’s DELTA takes a little history and infuses fantasy into an eerie tale of one town and one family in particular who become victims of “progress.”

It’s 1917 and the Madison family believes their mill and their ancestral home will never face the flooding of the valley they live in to make way for commercial water traffic and the necessary dams it would need. Even as their neighbors are systematically evicted, they remain steadfast that they will be saved.

What does the Madison family know that no else does? One teen will discover a lifetime of lies and deceit and the truth of the magic that lay all around her.

I would have LOVED for this brief tale to be more fleshed out! The storyline is fabulous and begs for more detail, but alas, made for a brief reading escape, one’s imagination must fill in the blanks!

I received a complimentary copy from Jordan Elizabeth!

Lottie is happy in the town of Delta. As her 17th birthday approaches, she’s introduced to her great aunt, Flora, who for mysterious reasons, does not leave her home. When the government comes in, interested in breaking the nearby reservoir, they leave the residents no choice but to leave. Lottie refuses though, confident that there are outside forces in control. Forces that will keep her and her family safe no matter what.

Like other Jordan Elizabeth books, this story packs a real punch in just a couple hours. The plot was intense, and Lottie was a relatable character. The ending of this novella makes me curious as to what book two could have in store.

Narration fit the tone well.

This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.

Lottie Madison is a typical young girl, living with her family in the small town of Delta, New York. Close to celebrating her 17th birthday, she is introduced to her great aunt, Flora, a recluse confined to her home because of a mysterious illness. At the same time, the town is facing flooding by the government in order to improve the Erie Canal.

As everyone in town receives their eviction notices, the Madisons refuse to leave or believe that they will have to move along with everyone else. Instead, they seem convinced that they are protected by some type of magic. When Lottie begins to ask questions, she finds out more about her family than she ever knew and some of it isn't very good.

I enjoyed this short story and the author did a good job of drawing the reader/listener into the events surrounding the town of Delta. At the same time, I could feel the emotions in Lottie and her need to find out the truth. The narrator, Danae Bianes, did a great job and added a lot to my listening enjoyment.

Local author, local story, intriguing cover! The writing was fine; I kept reading but just in short chunks before falling asleep each night. I enjoyed imagining Delta as a self-sufficient, populated town from the perspective of people who lived there and learning how the state went about the claiming of the land and the destruction of it. I will definitely look at Delta Lake differently now. What I didn't like is how lame the protagonist is; she's a really weak, boring character who has no curiosity, spirit, drive, or ability to make connections/infer. The plot picked up at the end, but the development of it lacked due to the reader making connections and wanting to know more but being stalled within a lackluster character who couldn't think for herself very much.

My middle school students will be much less picky and will probably enjoy this; it's a worthy selection for library. Hopefully, some students will choose this for their historical fiction selection and appreciate a locally based story!

I received this book from the author for an honest review. Having read her books before, I couldn't wait to dive into yet another tale and world Jordan Elizabeth had created. I was not disappointed in the least. Using a backdrop based on actual events of a real town in the 1900's, the author has managed to twist it into an intriguing and imaginative tale about a young girl and her family that is steeped in secrets and mystery, and magic.

The sinking of a village.
Jordan Elizabeth is a new author to me, but as her main work appears to be fantasy and erotica, that's not really surprising. Delta, however, is an historical fiction novel, centred around the creation of Lake Delta above the nineteenth century village by the same name. The narrative includes a touch of the magical, but magic in terms of people's beliefs at the time.

Lottie is the eldest daughter of the Madison family. She attends the small village school and helps her family with daily chores. Her life seems quite normal until news arrives that the village is to be cleared to open the way for a reservoir. The village is in turmoil but her family seems to be strangely calm.
There are some interesting seeds sewn at the beginning of the novella, when Lottie visits a Medium who predicts water in her future and declares that she is not who she thinks she is.

I was prompted to do a bit of research around the village of Delta, which was flooded in the early 20th Century. What was the Mohawk River, nr Rome in the State of New York, is now the beautiful State Park. Businesses and homes were either raised to the ground, or removed to other locations. People were offered some financial recompense, but finding a farm to buy was challenging. Most seemed to head towards family in other parts of the State.
The flooding was intended to enlarge the canal system in the state, for commercial transport, but sadly, within a few years of these events, the train system took over and the canals became disused.

This was an enjoyable listen but could well have been a much longer novel, rather than a novella; there is plenty to flesh out and add detail to.
Well read by Danae Bianes.

Author Jordan Elizabeth has written a young adult fantasy novella that clearly dwells in the realm of reality. Her newest release, “Delta,” takes readers to a historical point in time through the eyes of a young woman whose reality is nothing like she thought it was.

As the author herself describes it, “Delta” is based upon the history of Lake Delta, a real place, and takes place in the early 1900s. Lake Delta is a state park near where the author’s parents reside today. Delta proper used to be a village, but the state flooded it to feed the canal systems. Within a few years of this flooding, however, these canals would be permanently closed.

Within this former village of Delta, there was a house that the novella’s main character, a young Lottie, was never allowed to go. Can’t we all recall a home from our childhoods of which we were forbidden to visit, or even get near to?

As the storyline flows through its many ebbs and tides we soon find out that this house becomes a very important part of the future grown “Lottie” Madison – short for her birth name of Ottilie. But that isn’t really her either, and what she has grown up knowing is quickly washed away, forcing her to adapt to a new life with an unknown or at best an unfamiliar past.

Magic always seems to have a way of bringing things out of the darkness into the light, and it does not fail to do so in this storyline either. By the book’s end, through its epilogue, the author does a very satisfying job in passing Lottie’s lore down to the next generation, with Lottie herself in the role of sage storyteller this time.

Overall, I found this to be a very intriguing and exciting read. It has made me think about the very thin line that exists between fantasy and reality even more, and to ponder how we really can be sure that our history is, at least personally, factual. Or is it?...

Suitable for anyone who wants to enjoy a short story, Delta is the latest novella by the versatile Jordan Elizabeth. Based on an historical event but with purely fictional characters, the author weaves real life and paranormal/fantasy together to create a gripping tale.

Set in the years leading up to the time a small village was flooded to create Lake Delta in 1917, the short story focuses on the Madison family who believe the plans will never come to fruition. As the years pass, neighbours begin receiving eviction letters but the family remain steadfast in their belief that their land won't be affected.

Meanwhile, the protagonist Lottie is given the task to deliver daily baskets of food to her Aunt Flora, a lady housebound in a cottage in the woods, however, Lottie is forbidden to ever enter the house.

As Lottie grows up with the threat of the flood becoming more of a reality, she begins to question why her parents are so convinced that all will be okay. In the months leading to her 17th birthday, she overhears her parents speaking of magic, but surely magic isn't real? She is soon to discover the painful truth and learn that she is not who she thinks she is.

Delta was quick to read and the ten year storyline sped by. The fast pace makes readers eager to reach the conclusion, a conclusion that is in no way predictable.

Whilst short, Delta is definitely worth reading. It is perfect for those moments when you need something to do but can't commit to reading a longer novel.

Most of the time, if I find a plethora of 4&5 star ratings, I’m leery to pick up the book.
However, the book description seemed simple, the read quick, and included historical fiction with a dash of paranormal. So I thought maybe it was tightly written and driven by strong characters.
I wasn’t terribly disappointed but it wasn’t edge-of-your-seat-page-turning fascinating.
It started off gripping and dripping of mystery and intrigue but then it sharply drops off. Within the last twenty minutes is when everything is TA-DA - exposed. No clues to figure it out.
Then it’s the graphic terror of why the aunt is restricted to the home ...
I like stories to be tied up, but our main character escapes Delta too easily. The prologue doesn’t seem like she’s ever looking over her shoulder, which is like the store bought bow at the end.
I wouldn’t recommend it, as it didn’t quench my thirst and took too long to finish this 2 1/2 hour book, but I wouldn’t tell someone to specifically avoid it.
The narrator was okay as she read the book. It neither helped nor hindered the rating.
This is my voluntary review of an audiobook received for free.

It is a very gripping story of magic and mystery. I loved the characters and the way it told really makes you feel everything. A story of heartache, betrayal, and intrigue. It is set in a village of Delta. It is decided that this village would be flooded to create a reservoir. Villagers were supposed to be relocated. No one is happy about it but the Madisons are acting as if nothing is wrong. Lottie Madison can't figure out her parents and elder siblings behavior. She is worried that it will be too late for them to do proper planning soon. But every time she brings up the topic, she is chastised. It seems that the Madisons are not ready to accept the reality. However, it turns out the truth is far darker and sinister. Soon, Lottie will have to make a choice; stay with her crazy family and be doomed or leave to find something better.
It is a very well-written novella. But don't consider it a light reading because it is quite emotional. It's a perfect mix of fantasy and reality and I enjoyed it a lot. It's an amazingly woven tale.

So, this was book number two in my on-going book recommendation/exchange my wife and I take part in with each other. She is a huge fan of Jordan's work and is always talking about her latest stories. She recommended Delta to me, a story that is so far off my normal trail of Space Opera, Sci-Fi, and Post-apocalyptic tales that I had to give it a shot.

This is my first audiobook story of a historic style. While I had a general idea of what to expect from the plotline thanks to my wife, I was not sure what to expect in terms of storytelling and how the tale of Lottie and Nora would unfold.

Man, was I surprised at just how much I enjoyed this story. The scenes were very well written with vivid amounts of detail and a high level of variety in terms of dialogue, descriptions, and tags. Close to the end of the story, I found a few story arcs that I did not expect and that were each played out in a fantastic fashion.

As my second Jordan Elizabeth book, I will definitely be waiting for her next audiobook release. The narrator was very natural and I felt fit the role of Lottie quite nicely.

5/5 from someone who is quickly becoming a JE fan.

I love historical fiction/nonfiction, it doesn’t matter to me. I love reading about the lives of people from back in the day. Then, add in the fact, there’s a magical aspect to the town as well; it was an interesting combo. This story had a lot going on. It held my attention so much that I didn’t want to stop reading when it was time to do something else. I was surprised to find out at the end that the story was actually based on facts. I’d heard or read about small towns getting buried underwater in the creation of a dam, but I could never imagine what that must have been like for those that lived there. Just thinking about how higher-ups could just walk in and basically take the land, and there being nothing the townspeople could do. That was sad. I’d definitely love to go to Delta and see what it looks like, maybe go diving to see the foundations, if they’re still there. That would be neat.

I received a copy of this book in return for an honest review.

My favourite read by Jordan Elizabeth yet. Based on the true event, the flooding of the town of Delta to create Delta Lake, a reservoir, the author weaves in magic to create the story of Lottie, a young girl whose family seems to have plans for. Plans of which she is unaware.

Excellent pacing, great plotting, and really well written descriptions make this the perfect novella for when you want a decent shorter read between novels.

This book was given to me at my request and I am providing a voluntary review:

This was a cute little book. It was a little short for my taste, but still very entertaining. I was actually surprised when I saw Book 1 in the title. Usually when authors do that, they leave the ending in a cliffhanger, forcing you to buy the next one if you want to know what happens. Not the case here. This makes me even more curious about book 2. The narrator did an excellent job! I will definitely be looking to read the next book!

I received this book for free. I am voluntarily posting this review and all opinions expressed herein are my own.

I was very interested in this book as I grew up not far from the area described in the book. However, I found a real lack of development of the characters and I found the MC Lottie to be generic and not very interesting. The story wrap up was quick - and lacked tension. As I listened to this book, I found my mind drifting many times so I had rewind and listen to parts of it again. Overall, it was just okay for me.

Not what one would expect after reading the blurb...
This story appears to be a mixture of fantasy (magic) and "political" thriller like so many old environmental movies.
But I couldn't be farther from the true... The magic theme is there but only as an illusion. And the political part is also there but not the main focus. In reality, this story has an amazing twist that will make it worth to reach the end.
Still, besides the main turning point of the story, I can't say it was a great page turner.
The narration is good and a great fit for the main character.

As I live in Westernville on the Mohawk River above the former village of Delta, this story of the abandonment of the village to make way for the flooding for what is now Delta Lake reservoir is familiar to me. The tale of young Lottie and her escape from the madness of her parents who held out deranged ideas about how the inevitable eviction could be thwarted is well told. The relocation of the Delta cemetery to a high bluff has a folk tale, maybe true or not, that the work party doing the reinterment were required to camp out in the new cemetery for six weeks of quarantine over a fear of spreading infection.

It is the case that Empire Hotel was disassembled and rebuilt in the village of Westerville where it still functions as the town hall.

A barn in the path of the flood was also taken apart and relocated to the rear of my property. I'm proud to report that after years of neglect and near collapse we have restored it to its former function.

'Delta' was truly a creative story. The premise is really cool. This book is a quick read, but it really pulled me in and didn't let go. The characters are wonderful. Lottie is a great lead. She's kind, honest and loyal. The historical aspect was very intriguing. The paranormal aspect was awesome. A good read to add to your tbr list.

A fictional story based on actual events, "Delta" is a quick read that hooked me right from the start. Historical facts blend with the paranormal, creating an intriguing tale of mystery and secrets. A fast-paced story, that once you start reading you can't put down till the last page. I'd love if it was a bit longer, hence the 4 stars.

A short and easy read. True facts blended with magic. A flooding of a valley to make way for a dam changed the lives of all in this small town. They all had to move and start over. This one family who had lived here for generations had ties to the land that others couldn't imagine. Darkness crept in towards the end as we found out what the magic entailed. Great story, I was intrigued.

Listened to the audiobook for teen book club, and I feel like this is one that I would have been better off reading in print. It was neat to read about local areas, and I really liked the fantasy elements as we got closer to the end. I think the narrator for the audio did an okay job, but definitely could have been better.

I'm now inspired to read more about the historical account of Delta Lake. A quick read, but the strong start drew me in. I would have liked to seen more written about the mystical and the abduction, but perhaps that would have drew attention away from the Delta story line. Overall, a good read.
