USA Today bestselling author H.Y. Hanna has written over 30 mystery novels, many of which have been translated into several languages. Her mysteries blend humour and clever plotting with vivid settings, featuring quirky characters - and cats with big personalities! After spending years trying to fit in and do a “real” job, Hsin-Yi finally returned to her first love: writing.
Throughout her life, she has called many places home—from Taiwan to Oxford, Dubai to New Zealand. She’s finally unpacked for good in Perth, Western Australia, where she spends most days fighting with her rescue cat Muesli for the use of her office chair.

In Silent Bud Deadly our MC, Poppy, is still trying to re-establish the gardening business she has inherited from her grandmother. She manages to get a well paid job landscaping a garden in the village and of course someone dies while she is there. As a result she attempts to find the identity of the murderer, aided by her neighbour, Nick, who has previously unsuspected housebreaking abilities.
At last Poppy seems to be realising that running a gardening operation is not something you can do without some prior knowledge of how plants actually grow. I hope in the next book she attempts to educate herself a little or at least asks for help from someone who knows what to do.
The mystery itself was quite clever and Poppy's supporting characters are all entertaining especially Oren, the ginger cat. There is a possible romance building which could be very interesting. I will be moving on to book three very soon to see what happens next.
Silent Bud Deadly (English Cottage Garden Mysteries, #2) by H.Y. Hanna
Synopsis /
Poppy never imagined she'd move to the English countryside and fall in love with a smug, demanding, ginger-haired male. Of course, that was before she discovered that she'd inherited a cottage garden nursery, and before she met a certain talkative orange cat named Oren. Now she's embracing a new life filled with rambling roses, scented herbs, warm summer days... and weeds (lots of weeds), as she attempts to restore the neglected cottage garden to its former glory. When she lands her first gardening job at a beautiful country house, Poppy is delighted to earn some much-needed money. But she barely sets foot in the flowerbed before the meddling neighbour drops dead in front of her--murdered by a lethal poison. Now Poppy finds herself busy weeding out suspects, helped by whacky old inventor Bertie and his feisty terrier Einstein, plus a whole host of nosy villagers... not to mention Nick Forrest, the maverick crime author. But with her clients' flowerbed mysteriously dying and red herrings at every turn, Poppy soon discovers that neither gardening nor sleuthing are as simple as she thinks...
My Thoughts /
Cosy mystery lovers rejoice, for the English Cottage Garden Mysteries is shaping up to be another terrific cosy mystery series by Australian author, H.Y. Hanna. I'm a big fan of this author's Oxford Tearoom Mysteries and while this series doesn't appear to have the same je ne sais quoi I'm definitely still in for the long haul.
Like Hanna's previous books, this series is clean -no graphic violence, sex scenes or strong language. What you will get is a catchy title, a female mc amateur sleuth, a decent cosy mystery (which comes with a gardening theme), and a suitably delightful cast of supporting characters, which includes those of the four-legged variety.
In this, book #2, Poppy Lancaster (our mc) is still trying to establish, or rather, resurrect the gardening business she inherited from her grandmother. She accepts a job to landscape the garden of a wealthy family in the Village. Now, you probably know what I'm going to say next - and you'd be right. Somebody dies while Poppy is working in their garden.
Poppy's character (and sleuthing abilities) seems to still be in its infancy but I'm hoping Hanna develops her further as the series progresses. For me, it's the supporting characters that prop this series up from a three-star read, to a 3.5 (rounded up generously to 4) stars. Poppy's old landlord, confidant, and friend, Nell moves up (or is it down?) from London to board with her at Hollyhock Cottage. Neighbour and quirky inventor (think Dr Emmett Brown in Back to the Future), Dr Bertram Noble (known as Bertie to his friends) is back; as is broody (or is that moody?) writer and (other) neighbour, Nick Forrest. Also making return appearances are our four-legged characters, Oren the cat, and Einstein the dog.
Hanna's writing is wonderfully descriptive, and you will have no trouble picturing what this quaint English Village and Countryside looks like. A clever mystery? Maybe not, but the writing style is so engaging and the characters so entertaining, it makes you want to forgive the predictable plot points.
And while I didn't figure out the 'who' or the 'why' (I never do), I did learn something about poisonous garden plants!
I wrote a review only to fall asleep and have it disappear. While a good story, I figured it out after just 15% in, which is odd for me as I'm usually thick as a brick.
Outside of a small handful of inconsistencies this was a very good mystery. Learned a ton about plants, poisonous or otherwise Loved the neighbors' pets, especially Oren, the entitled orange cat. And Nelle, her erstwhile London landlady, is a hoot. I suspected the culprit partway through, but there was enough ongoing intrigue to keep me reading. An overall good read.
I received a free copy from the author and voluntarily reviewed it.
After how good book 1 was I was excited to dive right into book 2 soon after I received it. And I am happy to say book 2 is just as good. Silent Bud Deadly follows Poppy as she's working hard to restore her grandmother's garden nursery, but when she gets a job gardening she stumbles upon another murder.
The mystery in this was one was great. I did manage to predict who the murderer was, but not because it was too obvious, it just suddenly clicked for me when they did something. And there was enough I hadn't figured out yet and I enjoyed seeing Poppy put the pieces together. There is a great twist, which I found quite unique as it's not something I've seen so far in cozy mysteries as far as I can remember. I also liked how we slowly figure out more about the murdered women and who might've had motive to kill her. It also was interesting how at first there didn't seem as many suspects, until Poppy discovers more and then more suspects pop-up.
Besides the mystery there's Poppy who's building a life for herself here in this new town she moved to. I loved seeing how she was doing and also her struggles with gardening. It made sense she made some mistakes, although I wasn't happy when she lied to someone. I did liked when she admitted she made mistakes as she seemed open minded enough to realize when she was wrong and correct that. I like Poppy as a character and it was great to see how she was going with her garden.
There are also some interesting surprises among the side characters. There are some new characters like Amber, Christine and John we meet who have to do with Poppy's gardening job. We hear more about Nell and there's a fun development with her. I liked seeing how the detective Suzanne and Poppy interact. And Nick still continues to be a promising love interest for Poppy, they annoy each other sometimes, but it's clear they do care about each other. But it really is only a hint so far of possible romance, but it will be great to see how that develops. I also liked seeing what Bertie is up to in this book and how one of his inventions plays a role in the investigating part. And the pets Owen and the terrier (forgot his name) make multiple appearances as well. It's a great cast of side characters.
To summarize: this was an awesome sequel. I had so much fun reading it and figuring out the mystery alongside with poppy. I managed to guess the murderer correctly, which was fun, but there were parts I only figured out when Poppy did. There is a great twist concerning the mystery which was really well done. I like seeing Poppy settling in here in her new house and town and how she's working on her gardening skills. It felt realistic that she made mistakes and even tough I didn't always agree with how she handled things, I do think her reasoning made sense and was in character. There is a great cast of side characters and also some great connections Poppy makes with them. All in all this is a great new series and I would recommend it to those who love cozies!
I had a bit of trouble at the beginning of the book grasping the story but was soon wrapped up in the mystery. Poppy is an endearing character and just beginning to learn about her life in the quaint English village and tending her Grandmother's country garden. Her sleuthing is in its early days to but with her quirky neighbors to help she is progressing well.
I want to love The English Cottage Garden Mystery series since I am a fan of H.Y. Hanna’s Oxford Tearoom and Bewitched by Chocolate Mystery series, but I am having a hard time warming up to the main protagonist Poppy. I know that she means well and has great aspirations to continue her grandmother’s nursery business, but her cluelessness is annoying and hard to move beyond to enjoy the rest of the story. With all of the resources available to her, one would think she would research gardening, but instead she assumes she can do it on her own. It is especially bothersome since she seems to be relatively intelligent with regards to investigating her client’s neighbor’s death.
The investigation of nosy neighbor Valerie’s death is interesting enough with plenty of suspects and motives. I vacillated throughout the book about whom I thought whodunit but did realize their identity long before Poppy did. The story does come to an exciting, dangerous climax which made the tale worthwhile. There is a bombshell dropped by Poppy’s neighbor Nick at the end of the book that I did not see coming, and I look forward to learning more about it in future installments.
Other than Poppy, the recurring characters are endearing. Oren the cat and Nick are especially compelling, and I look forward to seeing more of Nell. None of the characters central to Valerie’s death are particularly appealing, but I think that is intentional.
I hope that Poppy gets her act together in the next installment. Recommended to cozy readers who enjoy gardening and a rural English setting.
I received an ARC of this title from the author and voluntarily shared my thoughts here.
I really want to like this series because I love the Oxford Tea Room and the Bewitched by Chocolate series, but I just can't get into it. It's too hard to believe that somebody with Poppy's lack of skills or knowledge will ever make a success of a nursery. I like the setting and the neighbor and the cat, but so far I'm not liking Poppy all that much.
A delightful, warm and cozy mystery. The British countryside, an orange cat, a friendly dog, a cottage garden, a mystery, baking, a motherly friend, an eccentric inventor, and a brooding handsome neighbor. What could be better?
This series is my favorite of all the author's series. I received a review copy.
Poppy Lancaster has finally contracted her first gardening job! She has been hired to plant the garden of Dr. & Mrs. Smitheringale, who are expecting their first child.
As Poppy starts to plant the rose bushes, she is interrupted by the nosy neighbor, Valerie. Valerie insists on telling Poppy how to properly prepare the soil, how deep to dig the hole, which fertilizer to use, and so on. Not satisfied with just telling Poppy what to do, Valerie goes so far as to pick up a hand rake and demonstrate how to prepare the soil! Just as Valerie starts to demonstrate the preparation, she starts acting oddly. Stumbling back to her own property through the gap in the hedges, Valerie collapsed. Poppy tried to help her, but it was too late. Valerie is dead.
Valerie could be annoying, but was she so obnoxious that somebody would want to kill her? Will the police be able to determine the type of poison and how it was administered? Will the doctor and his wife realize that Poppy is a novice gardener? Will she need any help with her first gardening job? Being new to the area, how well is Poppy fitting in and is she being accepted?
H.Y. Hanna does such a wonderful job of creating pictures in your mind. When reading her books, including Silent Bud Deadly, I can imagine visiting Hollyhock Cottage and Garden Nursery. I can also picture her neighbors and friends! This makes reading such a pleasure. It creates a movie in my mind. Even better, I can imagine the characters having familiar faces.
“Silent Bud Deadly” earns 5+/5 David Austin Roses…Engaging, Clever!
H.Y. Hanna continues to hold the top spot as my favorite cozy author ever, and this series has “bloomed” into the Top Five of 2019. It ticks off all of my boxes for an extraordinary read. Clever mystery? Check! British setting? Check! Realistic characters? Check! Fascinating theme? Check! A few giggles? Check! Hint of romance? Check! Although she uses the third-person narrative putting readers as observers, her writing style is so entertaining and engaging that it's hard to put down. This second book puts us in the delightful English countryside where Poppy Lancaster is trying to bring her own garden nursery back to its former glory and also trying to produce a proper country garden for her first clients. Ok, she’s not a landscaper and most plants in her care are challenged to survive. However, a dead plant is the least of her worries when Karma joins in putting a terribly annoying neighbor six-feet under. With her new friends, some quirky, all enjoyable, she weeds through various suspects who have their own secrets, jealousies, and misfortunes they'd prefer not see the sunshine. But, one can't hide under a bush, and with a bit of peril, it all works out bloody brilliantly! I highly recommend this book and the series.
"Disclosure: I received an ARC. My review is voluntary with honest comments and insights."
A great read. Okay the plot was obvious as to the culprit, motive and method but I still thoroughly enjoyed it. A great look at small village life and the characters that seem to dwell in these communities. If you are expecting magic - this is a magic free zone but Owen, Einstein and the rats add a touch of humour. Wonderful characters - colourful and vivid. She's broke but intent on getting her business up and running. The seeds she planted should hopefully sprout soon and the garden was taking shape after all the weeding. The offer of a gardening job was unexpected but the money would be extremely welcome. How hard could it be to plant a few plants? Harder than it looked and the nosy neighbour from next door had to barge in and take over. That's before she dropped dead. Now the plants are looking the worse for wear and the findings about the dead woman are through - poisoned! As she tries to make sense of it she starts to gather facts. Her employer's husband has had an affair, the dead woman had partaken t blackmailing people, her gardening skills where virtually non-existent and Nell had been made redundant and homeless. Could she make sense of it all. Throw in some rats, an entitled cat and a happy-go-lucky dog plus his absent-minded owner for a read that you will enjoy and savour.
Realizing she is not able to provide for her needs, Poppy takes on a side job as gardener for a doctor and his wife. Their nosy neighbor dies while giving Poppy advice on the new garden she has planted. So Poppy goes back into sleuth mode, getting some aid from her author neighbor and some encouragement from the chief inspector. Her friend Nell has hit a hard spot and moves in to the cottage. Poppy still has a far ways to go before she has a successful cottage business, but the reader can see the possibility of romance and more sleuthing. And it is obvious that her neighbors, including the cat and dog, will provide both drama and humor in her life.
I didn't like this as much as the first in the series. I still like the setting (small village outside of Oxford). I figured out the murderer before the murder even happened, without trying, and found myself frustrated that Poppy (our lead character) didn't recognize this as well. Nick (Poppy's neighbor and a crime writer) wasn't in the book very much, and I missed his presence.
I will definitely pick up the next in the series, and hope the addition of Poppy's old landlady Nell, moving in with Poppy, adds more interest to the series.
Very seldom do I find a second book in a series that is just as good as the first. But this is the exception. Poppy Lancaster has been offered a chance to do a private garden. Even though she doesn't know what she's doing she is a Lancaster and how hard can it be. But when the nosey neighbor drops dead next to the house she's working at, naturally Poppy becomes curious. Between blackmail and hidden secrets Poppy has her hands full being a sounding board for her new friend DI Suzanne Whittaker.
This series should be read in order so you can appreciate all the characters and their quirks. Especially Bertie.
This one was cute but predictable. Rarely can I correctly guess the identity of the murderer before the 50% mark, but I figured it out in the first quarter. Overall, it was still enjoyable. As other reviewers have stated, I do wish that Poppy hadn't lied, but she did make good on it in the end which is, for me, what counts in the end.
Second in the series and we are watching Poppy Lancaster trying to learn how to garden and get along with her neighbors. She lands a gardening job with Amber and her husband John, but quickly get over her head and a nosy neighbor is found murdered. Lots of excitement in this one and a secret is revealed about her two neighbors.
This is the second book in The English Cottage Garden cozy mystery series. They have been enjoyable.
It is frustrating that the main character who has inherited a nursery and kills plants due to her gardening ignorance does not take a minute to do any research before she starts a job.
This is the 2nd in a series and I really like these stories. They are a little silly at times but there is a lot of unpredictable occurrences and twists to the story. The cat totally cracks me up sometimes. Looking forward to the next book in the series.
Silent Bud Deadly is book 2 in the English Cottage Garden Mysteries series. It is a cozy mystery set in England. I am really enjoying these books. They are very light and fun. I will definitely continue on with this series. The narration is good. Overall, 4.5 stars.
My rating: I LOVED THE COVER (so cute), but the story itself, just ok and glad to be moving on. The characters weren't engaging; the protagonist was flat and frivolous. The writing was a bit simplistic and silly. Ending was predicable. However, 3 stars for some botany info that was interesting. Very respected author - maybe it was just this story that didn't work for me.
Silent Bud Deadly by H. Y. Hanna is the second book in English Cottage Mystery series and is the great continuation of book one. Books can be read as a standalone but as always it is good to start at the beginning and follow the story accordingly.
Poppy has decided to stay in her grandmother's cottage and re-open the nursery garden. As things are slow at the moment she accepts the job of a part time gardener for one of Nick's friends. However, when a nosy neighbor drops down dead while showing Poppy how to properly plant roses, Poppy is more then intrigued. So she starts asking questions and finding clue trying to resolve the mystery.
Lovely second book of a new series. Set in a beautiful and charming English countryside with its magnificent gardens it is a perfect choice for reading on a sunny afternoon surrounded by fragrant flowers. I found it a bit strange how principled and conscientious Poppy could decide to take on something she knows she knows absolutely nothing about without even learning basic things about. However I understand that lack of financial means made her take on job she wasn't qualified for.
I like how sure she is of herself while sleuthing and how she befriended police Inspector.
Her relationship with moody and charming mystery writer should move forward. I also enjoy how there are many other mysteries lurking about just waiting to be revealed. Funny scenes are a big plus for me.
I can hardly wait for Poppy's new adventures.
A review copy of this book was sent to me by the author. All of the above opinions are my own.
This is the second installment in a new series by H.Y. Hanna, whose first installment I had the pleasure of discovering. When I found out the release date, I rushed out to buy it. It continues the adventures of Poppy, a young English woman who has left London for the countryside, where she has just inherited a garden center and a cottage from her grandmother, whom she didn't even know existed. What's more, she knows nothing about botany or gardening, which adds spice to her clumsiness. This second installment is just as entertaining as the first, with all the elements of a cozy English mystery: tea books, humor, a handsome but distant novelist, and a very competent policewoman who has become Poppy's friend. I hope this series continues!
