Basically a concise book as far as history, although I did find a mistake on page 22 relating to the location of the Isle of Iona. The book was so distracting for me because of the countless grammatical errors, as well as misspelling of names of people and places. I found myself making corrections throughout the entire book. It was obviously transcribed by someone who did not know Scottish history or geography, and was obviously not proof-read!
There is no option over than "read" as the tag or bookshelf; however, full disclosure - I could not read this book. I made it only to page 11. It is so badly written - and "written" is a misnomer for what is clearly a voice-to-text production - that I simply gave up. Punctuation is either overused to such a degree that sentences end before they are completed or so inadequately used as to make it impossible to differentiate one idea to the next. Spelling is next level with places and things so badly misspelled that even a novice historian knows something is amiss: If "a chief dumb society" on page 9 doesn't give it away, I offer you "Sioux terrains," Battle of "Mons Gropius," "General Julius Agra cola," "under the leadership of Cowdicas."
Really, I was so disappointed to have spent nearly $10 for this book and more so because had I read the reviews first I would have reconsidered.
There is some interesting information in this book, but much of it has to be inferred or guessed at as this book is probably the most poorly edited book I've ever read! And that's saying a lot. Early on, I began to suspect that it had been dictated to a voice to text program and then not actually proofread; this was confirmed when I ran into the first insert "[28:54 inaudible]". The program has a huge problem with homophones; thus we get rain for reign and vice versa, peace for peace, etc. And it also has a problem with "sound alikes" so that Arthur becomes author, Chiefdom becomes Chief dumb, laird is lard, Carlisle can be Carlyle, Carlile or (my personal favorite) car pile. Mc becomes mick, Duncan becomes dunkin and my all time personal favorite, papal is PayPal!!! To add insult to injury, a huge chunk of history is totally ignored - the book jumps from about 1340 to the Industrial Revolution (and skims over the years from 1800 to present, completely ignoring the Act of Unification of 1707 and the Jacobite uprisings, among other significant events). I am so sorry I wasted $2.99 on this book.
I can't rate this book. I couldn't get past the first five pages due to multiple spelling and grammar errors. When I hit the location of Karen PayPal, I was done.
An in-the-know editor would have been great for this one.
First - Who is this author Eric Brown anyway? No information is given in the book and I was unable to identify him from the various same named persons I found in an online search. Second - Like reading auto-corrected transcribed material? Read this book then.
I was attracted to this book as a “concise history,” but it is so full of grammatical errors that it is basically unreadable. I slogged through at a painfully slow pace because I just wanted to proofread and edit. I don’t know how this made it to publication as a physical book or even an e book that costs money. It was clearly written as a voice to text with no one bothering to read through and and do a bit of editing. The incomplete sentences were particularly painful for me, and the most painfully obvious evidence of speech to text was the phrase “chief dumb” rather than “chiefdom.” I’m taking all of the history in this book with a grain of salt because nobody who publishes something so sloppy can be trusted.
The history may be correct, I don’t know but the writing is terrible. Misspell words (whales for Wales for instance) poor grammar and punctuation. I find it hard to believe this book was even published.
Well, it wasn't terrible. It is just what the title says 'concise overview;' don't expect too much. The last portion is more the author's opinions on what should happen in Scotland's political sphere.
Excellent quick overview of the history of Scotland. Well researched, concise and easy to read. Very enjoyable. A good place to start before you read through the books on this topic.
After getting my DNA done and finding out I am 37% Scottish I decided to read up on the history. This was a good starting point. The book detailed the Scottish history as an overview.
Not concise. Not even sure why I continued to read in entirety. Looking for something more factual and with better punctuation. Disappointed in this one.
