This prequel by Crystal Ash sets the tone for her Shifted Mates series, and it did leave me intrigued! I liked the main characters, both the strong-willed and loyal Astrid, and the mysterious and charming Orion.
As with most prequels, the page count doesn't allow for too much room for character and plot development, but what is presented lays the groundworks for a world where shifters are known by some, but not by others, and there are glimpses into how different shifter communities work, and so on.
My only real complaint might be due to preference when it comes to short stories, but it was the lack of conclusion by the end. The prequel feels more like the first few chapters, like a sample of book 1 in a series, rather than a story that can be read on its own. I also found certain details a little confusing, such as the reference to the MC's "inner" fox. Had I not read other shifter stories, I wouldn't have known what this meant.
But! I loved the (less common) cross-species romance that was building, and I would like to see how that's taken in the long run. Might give this series a go!
I liked this, but it was over so fast that I'm not sure I truly got to know the characters. It does give some set up for the world the series is set in, but I feel like there's still a while lot left to know.
A prequel that makes you long for the series to start!
I may be biased but I couldn't help but love this book. It is a short prequel for Crystal's new series but it packs a punch. Astrid is a fox shifter, living with her parents and minding her own business until her life is turned upside down by the sudden appearance of a wolf shifter. Orion arrives to start working with her father and Astrid is completely captivated by him. He is a loner and is hiding secrets but Astrid feels a connection to him. This story just whets the appetite for Astrid's series and I can't wait to read about Astrid, Orion and her family. If you have read Crystal's Unholy Trinity series, you will already be familiar with Astrid and Orion, who both make appearances in the later books. If not, you've got a treat ahead. The Unholy Trinity features Deja and her three demons, while introducing Deja's friend Nona (who is also getting her own series) and Astrid and her family. All of Crystal's female characters are worthy of being leading ladies and I was so pleased to learn that Nona and Astrid were to be given starring roles too. If you like strong, fierce women who love their men with all their hearts, Crystal's books are definitely for you.
First off - Mrs Crystal Ash - how you gonna do me like that? That little cliffhanger.... I'm trying to get this review in ASAP so I can go continue with the next books. lol
Love little prequels or Novellas like this. They definitely set the tone for the next books...
Astrid is a sharp shooter (21 yr old) fox and finds herself head over heels for her dads new logger helper at work, only he's a Wolf and he's not exactly her age.
Orion Comtois - the Louisiana native, silver fox, but wolf (hehe). The night he spends in Astrid's family home, she discovers somethings not quite right and he's got some skeletons, or in his case witches in his closet. (I would have enjoyed more info on this to get more storyline.)
Later, after Astrid has a horrible night out and comes home sad and single, Orion shows up in the nick of time and they share what seems to be a life-altering kiss...The kind of kiss that makes your toes curl and your lips tingle...but then Mrs. Ash cuts you off. *eye roll* END OF BOOK lol
*Overall 4/5 *Heat? 1/5 (got good at the very end but then the author stabs you in the ovaries and says JK, go read my other books) *First person POV - Just Astrid. *HEA? No.
Astrid comes from a great family of fox sifters. Then one day this striking handsome southern man ,catches her eye like no other has. Orion is a kind man well more than a mere man, he's a wolf sifter. He's haunted by something from his home town of New Orleans. Of which all shifters are ruled by only magic, and magic users. Wanted to make a break a new life can this even be, for this loner? One thing is stopping him ? I'd tell you but that just wouldn't seem fair you really need to read to it don't you it's worth it.....
Great a lead-in story to a shifter series about a family of fox shifters. Living in Oregon, father works as a logger, mother works as a teacher, teenage girl about to graduate college, and a younger brother learning his way through life...and the random stranger, who shows up out of nowhere, a lone wolf shifter tormented by something unspoken.
This book was enjoyable. I loved the FMC. She was spuncky... the story was fasted paced and everything happened a little quick. Although with being a prequel I am ok with that if I get more story. Because it did its job and got me hooked. I will continue this series.
I loved Crystal's first series and am so excited that we get to step back into that world with Astrid and her men! I loved seeing how Astrid and Orion met in this prequel and can't wait for more!
Astrid is going to college and lives with her parents. They are fox shifters. A Orion a wolf shows up one day to work for them. There is something about each one, but what is it? What is Orion hiding? Their is so much age difference between them?
can i just say i love Orion!? this short story had me swooning for Orion who happens to be a little older than Astrid the main character but oh omg he is sexy as hell!! great short introduction the the new series!
Come baaaaaaack Orion! What are his nightmares about? Why can’t he stay? Why is Astrid such a terrible name but Orion is swooney? Why was she with that DB boyfriend? What is going to happen in the next book????
As a fox-shifter, Astrid knows that Orion, a wolf-shifter, isn't the right man for her - and he's older than she is. The story is okay. "Doll" annoys me. She's an adult and so should be called by her name. [or 3.5 stars]
Orion is enigmatic and haunted. Astrid is young but strong and determined, there is palpable connection even if there shouldn’t be. I need to read more.
