Rate this book

Sophisticated comedies of French playwright Molière, pen name of Jean Baptiste Poquelin, include Tartuffe (1664), The Misanthrope (1666), and The Bourgeois Gentleman (1670).

French literary figures, including Molière and Jean de la Fontaine, gathered at Auteuil, a favorite place.

People know and consider Molière, stage of Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, also an actor of the greatest masters in western literature. People best know l'Ecole des femmes (The School for Wives), l'Avare ou l'École du mensonge (The Miser), and le Malade imaginaire (The Imaginary Invalid) among dramas of Molière.

From a prosperous family, Molière studied at the Jesuit Clermont college (now lycée Louis-le-Grand) and well suited to begin a life in the theater. While 13 years as an itinerant actor helped to polish his abilities, he also began to combine the more refined elements with ccommedia dell'arte.

Through the patronage of the brother of Louis XIV and a few aristocrats, Molière procured a command performance before the king at the Louvre. Molière performed a classic of [authore:Pierre Corneille] and le Docteur amoureux (The Doctor in Love), a farce of his own; people granted him the use of Salle du Petit-Bourbon, a spacious room, appointed for theater at the Louvre. Later, people granted the use of the Palais-Royal to Molière. In both locations, he found success among the Parisians with les Précieuses ridicules (The Affected Ladies), l'École des maris</i> (<i>The School for Husbands</i>), and <i>[book:l'École des femmes (The School for Wives). This royal favor brought a pension and the title "Troupe du Roi" (the troupe of the king). Molière continued as the official author of court entertainments.

Molière received the adulation of the court and Parisians, but from moralists and the Church, his satires attracted criticisms. From the Church, his attack on religious hypocrisy roundly received condemnations, while people banned performance of Don Juan . From the stage, hard work of Molière in so many theatrical capacities began to take its toll on his health and forced him to take a break before 1667.

From pulmonary tuberculosis, Molière suffered. In 1673 during his final production of le Malade imaginaire (The Imaginary Invalid), a coughing fit and a haemorrhage seized him as Argan, the hypochondriac. He finished the performance but collapsed again quickly and died a few hours later. In time in Paris, Molière completely reformed.

A second play by Moliere, this one had me laughing out loud. A husband and wife are having marital difficulties - he thinks she is having affairs and she thinks he is drunk and carousing. What to do? Talk to the smartest man in town - the town doctor - and get his advice. But what hilarity as the doctor is a pompous windbag and just will let nobody get a word in edgewise. The doctors steals the play as he goes on and on about words, his own greatness and having others briefly describe the problem. Each time he is in the play he goes on forever and at one point they all are trying to get his attention and he refuses to stop talking. They tie him up with a rope, drag him offstage and he still does not stop talking! Another short early play and after reading this I wish the schools would actively teach kids the joy of reading and putting on small plays like this in the classroom. Why not? Who am I, but a lover of plays and this is just a fine example of early Moliere and his comedy.

This is a free public domain ebook on Kindle. This short farce in one act, first played in 1660, hence one of Moliere’s early works, is a straightforward and chucklesome tale of a drunken brute of a husband being shown up by his witty and vivacious wife who resents being left at home to do the chores whilst he goes out drinking. Quite modern in outlook, that. Much of the action is taken up by the ridiculous pompous doctor who loves the sound of his own voice so much no one else can get a word in sideways. It’s good for a laugh, but not something to read time and again.

While Molière is incredibly funny, this play, depicting a toxic dynamic between a jealous old man and his younger wife, is just not that interesting. There is no resolution, which I guess is accurate for the period, but I just wish that all that conflict led to something. My first (but def not last) Molière—I enjoy the styles, but so far not the stories themselves.

its really good to read these types of dramas right before Valentine's day. This one was not quite as good as The Flying Doctor, but it'd has some memorable and comedic scenes. most of them involve the Doctor.

I find it off that Moliere played la Barbouille instead of the doctor like he did in the flying doctor, but this play I'd several years older and there is some growth between the two.

I believe Moliere doesn't quite do his lady characters that much credit, but they do come across as self-willed individuals with unique identities, goals, and means to achieve them. of course they resort to trickery, deceit, and lies, but in a social setting that was quite limited, I don't know what else is to be expected.

The play was very good and quite possibly shorter than this review. I might even read it again.
