***REVIEW***
Breaking Free:
Una Familia Segura
By Annie Hughes

I read, & enjoyed, this book before it underwent this edit & overhaul. Yet I was still struck with giddy excitement when it landed back on my kindle for a reread, which speaks volumes about this brand new author, the story & characters she has created.

Having read & reviewed this previously does NOT make this easier to write, I mean how can I condense all my thoughts into a spoiler free review???

As I did the last time I am gonna go with my gut & write this with the raw emotion I feel from finishing Anna's journey.

The horrors Anna has survived in her first 16 years of life are heartbreaking! She may believe she is weak but I think she is far stronger than any of us could ever hope to be.

When Anna let her guard down & her true personality come through it is so funny, I find her responses & quick wit are similar to my own.

I can't avoid mentioning the good people in Anna's life & how thankful I am that she has them!
Chloe, Logan & Jake are the BEST BFFs a girl could have, although ranking order may prove difficult, they each have their moments & own unique ways to help.
The dynamic & humour between Anna & Logan is hilarious.
David & Mel are true saviours.

This new life is not without it's ups & downs shaking Anna's faith that these changes are permanent, you can't blame the girl for having doubt.

I couldn't help but wonder, several times, is it all too good to be true? Can someone's life change so quickly & in such a huge way without it all coming crashing down?

This is one roller coaster ride that needs to be experienced first hand so you will need to read it to find out.

Thank you for this opportunity Annie, I can't wait to read Book 2.

I was honored to get to read Breaking Free: Una Familia Segura as an ARC. I do not read a lot of YA, but this book far surpassed all expectations I had. It has a beautiful story about Anna - a teenager who has always lived in a horrible household with abuse as her daily nightmare. When her stepfather kills her mother, she learns about her father for the first time and meets him. He never knew she existed, but takes her in as if they have always been close.

For the first time, Anna is given a chance to break free from her circumstances. She has an opportunity for a new life - one filled with love. But her old life haunts her and she still has to face challenges in her new home and school.

Annie Hughes has an incredible ability to write a story and make it come to life. I felt every emotion of Anna's and her family's. I wanted to just hug her and tell her everything would be okay! The story was captivating in the way it was told and the writing flowed so well. I was able to follow along easily and the page turned themselves while I was caught up in the plot. I cannot wait to read the second book in the series, but while it is a series, this is definitely a standalone with no massive cliffhanger. You can read it and feel completely satisfied at the end while still wanting to move onto the second book. Annie Hughes has a new fan for life!

A Normal Family-Something We All Deserve
Una Familia Segura...a truly beautiful and meaningful title and yet such a sad story for such an ugly situation. It touched me so deeply...found myself unable to breathe on so many occasions as Anna's story started unfolding. How can such ugliness exist? How can any human being do such unspeakable things to an innocent soul? Why do such monsters live & exist among us?This novel makes you question so many things,it made my stomach turn...but there is a higher power or karma that will end all this monstrosity...leaving me with a spark of hope that everyone who deserves it will eventually achieve happiness, even if they've had to suffer their entire life!Annie Hughes, this was a beautiful "ugly" novel about a situation I pray NO living soul should ever experience.I not only give it 5 stars but recommend that everyone read this story which will touch your heart & scar you for life.Thank you for giving me the opportunity to read something so amazing & heartwarming!

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of this book.
You know when a book is amazing when you're really struggling to think of how to sum up how great it is in a review, and I definitely have this issue right now!
I read this book in a few hours as I truly could not put it down! I was shocked to learn that it was the authors first novel, as it is written spectacularly well and is honestly just perfect!
This isn't your typical teenage story, I found myself trying to predict what was going to happen (as I always do) but this book had me thrown, in a great way!
I absolutely loved David, Mel and Logan, they are beautiful characters! Anna is an amazing, inspirational young girl who has been to hell and back, but with these characters help, she finds she can be something she never thought she could be.. Happy and loved.
I cannot wait to read more from this incredibly talented author!
Congratulations on a freaking extraordinary book!

Annie Hughes Review: Breaking Free: Una Familia Segura
Great read for all ages!
I enjoyed this story from the first. I found it difficult to put it down. I have read and reviewed many books, but found it difficult not to give away spoilers when it came to this book. Those that have read my reviews notice that I normally give no spoilers. Yes, I was that excited about it!
Anna’s story in his book grabbed me from the very first word and took me through a journey that I will not soon forget. Annie Hughes did a wonderful job of placing the reader in the shadow of the journey of a talented young woman. This story has it all; heros, heroines, heartache, joy, chuckles, and acceptance. I would give this book more stars if it were possible. I would recommend this book to a diverse population, which does describe my friends.

Thank you, Annie Hughes providing me with your debut novel Breaking Free: Una Familia Segura so I may bring you this review.

Annie Hughes debut Young Adult novel Breaking Free: Una Familia Segura was so well written that I was hooked on the first page. I was amazed that this was her first book she ever published. Once I started reading it I could not put it down. Of course once I got to a really good part of the book my Kindle battery died! I was not a happy camper and couldn’t wait to get back to the story once my Kindle was charged.

I absolutely adored Anna’s story. She had a hard life growing up that left broken and her heart guarded. That was until she met the father she never knew she had. David opened his heart, home, new life experiences and family to his daughter. It was heart warming to read her journey and the path she went on to find happiness again. I loved her passion for art and drawing. It was her way to escape from reality and a way to be creative.

I enjoyed the bond Logan had with his step sister Anna. He excitedly took her under her wing and showed her a life she didn’t know existed. He was also there for in tough times when she really needed someone to talk to.

Anna’s grandparents enraged me for all the dark and horrid things they did to her in the past. Now her grandparents wanted to take her away from the new happier life she has!! My heart went out to her during this part of the book! There was no way that Logan and David would let them take custody of her!

I was really impressed with Annie Hughes debut novel. My hope is that she writes more great books for the world to read.

Ok so I will admit I don't read a lot of Y/A books, and when I do it has to be something awesome.....and this one was!
I just don't know how to describe what I just read. It was more story than I expected in this genre...and it left me turning the pages so fast!
Anna's not broken just bent....sorry but I totally think those words fit! She goes through so much in her life that the fact she is still fighting makes me admire her so much! A weaker person would have given up years before. She has her new family to thank for helping her realise that she is actually worth the fight. Part of that family is Logan...and isn't he just funny! I think anyone would love a brother like that! And Jake...well he was quiet and intense....and oh so very hot!
There are things I want to know more about though! I need to know more about Carlos...I can't believe he just snuck away and won't cause more trouble! I want to know more about Jake...I mean that man needs to talked about! I need to know what happens now....so yes Im gonna pester Annie until the next part is done....she will be sick of me!

*away to pester*

I have received an ARC copy of this book from the author in exchange of an honest review. I was not compensated in any way for it and thoughts are 100% mine.

My thoughts:

This is a first book by Annie and for a début book baby, I have to say it's a beautiful story. Heartbreaking, sad, making you gasp every chapter at how horrific life can be.

The story is told from the POV of 16 years old Anna Castillo. The main protagonist of the story. Anna is not your usual teenager, where clothes, boys and parties are important. For her the main thing is to stay in the shadows and hopefully break free from her abusing stepfather.

We meet her at hospital, where she landed after her stepfather, Leo King, beat her up almost causing her death. Now she had broken ribs, is bruised. Her abuser landed in prison for her abusing her and murder. But that's not what is turning her world upside down. It's the man that comes to her rescue. Her father, who she never met. David Porter, is set in helping her and taking her away from this nightmare. After she agrees to go with him to America, to live with him and his family, she never expects that she will find, what she missed so much: father, mother, brother and friends. A family that will support her through her hell, as she is still expected to testify against Leo.

Even though she has her friend Jas, she is also betrayed by her. In addition her grandparents from hell, wants to fight the custody over her, but David is not letting them near her after hearing, what kind of monsters they were. All of them: Leo, her mother and her grandparents.

I love the story. It shows how important family is and there is always a light at the end of the tunnel. Anna, find her family as that light. But even after telling her family the whole truth of what was happening to her since Leo became her stepfather, she thought that they will trust her. But as her new family, they want to protect her, and sometimes they are overprotective and causes her to feel betrayed and not trusted. Even though they fought against all obstacles and becomes an amazing family.

I love Mel and how kind she is. She is a perfect mother figure. I fell in love with David, her dad, from the first meeting they had. He is snarky, knows what he wants and he wants to give Anna what she missed for the past 16 years.

I love Chloe, her best friend and I adore Jake and how they don't judge her after what happened to her.

But I just WORSHIP her relationship with Logan, her stepbrother! You can see he loves her, he supports her and wants what is best for her. He is the perfect big brother, that every girl wants.

Beautiful story, that will make you cry, sob, snort and laugh. I felt so heartbroken, but also I love how beautifully it ends.

Well done Annie! Amazing, beautiful 5 stars! Can't wait for the next part!

I read Una Familia Segura in just under 4 hours, let me start off by saying that I haven't actually read a paperback since I got my Kindle for Christmas 3 or 4 years ago. I was sucked in from the first page that had me turning page after page needing to know more about Anna's story, i loved the storyline Annie Hughes has such a lovely writing style that is just effortless to read. I enjoyed every single page, i got chocked up in places and had tears in my ears, i loved all of the characters, i felt myself wanting to know more about all of them and i really hope she does another story, i would love to see how Anna's story progresses and how her relationship turns out with Jake. I loved her relationship with her step brother Logan, her stepmother Mel and of course her real father David. The whole story was straight to the point there was no fluffing in the middle that subtracted from the plot, although I wished that she would have gone into further details about things in some places ie why Chloe was so upset but Anna wasnt the type of person to pry. Annie really hit the hammer on the nail on this, i would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a quick easy read to suck them in and lose a couple of hours. 5 stars and i hope that there will be a second book!!

Breaking Free: Una Familia Segura (Breaking Free #1)
by Annie Hughes

Anna Rosa Castillo has been through so much in her first 16 years of life but that is all about to change when her biological father turns up at her hospital bedside and wants her to return to America with him and his wife Mel and her son Logan. Anna has to adjust from having nothing to having everything she can desire.... That doesn't erase her past from her life!

I bought this book not knowing what it was about but because a friend had said it was really good and I loved, loved this book and from the very moment I started it to the very end and even now I am writing my review I feel like this is one of the best books I have EVER read.

The characters had me from the very start and I really felt that I connected with them, I really did not want this book to end. It is a very emotional read and very well written covering some really sensitive subjects.

I cried a lot in this emotional read it wasn't until after that I broke down sobbing.

I am so very excited to see that there will be a second book in this series and I cant wait to read it...

I will give this book 5 stars for Amazon & 5 stars for Goodreads (I do think it deserves 6 stars)

Breaking Free is a good story for a YA audience. It deals with some very adult issues and puts a bit of a Cinderella spin, with a new family playing the role of Prince Charming, on finding strength and courage in others. When we meet Anna, she is beaten, physically and emotionally and now being carried off by a father she never knew to a home across an ocean. The story follows the following months in her new life and how she deals with the ghosts of her past.

What's good about this story, again is that it is written for YA's. Teenagers will be able to relate to Anna and her view on her new life. Money, security, prestige, and love. The life every child wants. The sexual content and violence is mostly inferred and done in memories, but it is there. As I parent, I feel it necessary to also say that the parents views on underage drinking in the novel really bugged me, quite a bit.

But overall, this was a good story with a happy ending.

Debut author Annie Hughes did an outstanding job with her debut novel. We first meet Anna beyond broken in a hospital. From which she is wicked away to America to live with her biological father and his family. Anna not ever having experiencing a loving, protective family, no doubt struggles with the uncertainty of her future. Ms. Hughes takes us on an emotional journey with Anna, and coming to terms with her horrific past, and learning to love her family as they love her. This is a MUST read for anyone who understands the value of trust, family and justice. I anxiously await any novels from this talented new author. 5/5 stars. cross posted from karied Book Reviews & Take-Overs.

This was such a great read. Annie wrote Anna's story so beautifully you can't help but feel the emotions with the characters. The main character, Anna is just 16 years old and yet has had to deal with some adult events in her life. She is a character you just want to hug and protect. This is why I loved David, Mel and Logan, they came into Anna's life and became her protectors and support system. With Anna's new family came New found strength within herself. I read this book with a book club and I had such a hard time sticking to the 2 chapters a day schedule. I just didn't want to put it down, I wanted to know what happened next. Now I can't wait for Annie's next book.

This is the 2nd time I've read this book. I can honestly say I loved it even more reading it again. Anna shows true strength, & determination to move on from her horrible past. The beach scene between Logan & Anna, & the part where Logan tells Anna why he calls her "Angel" are def my fav scenes! I love Jake & Chloe's characters as her close friends. Logan is the hot brother every sister needs. David & Mel are the kind of parents who show support & are there 100%. "Una FamilIa Segura" has a special meaning in the story. If your looking for a book that will be next to impossible to put down, keeps you laughing & makes you feel for Anna than this is the right book.

It's easy to forget that really bad things happen to those around us on a regular basis. It's inspirational reading about a victim who continues to push through. 16-year-old Anna has had to face so much in life and yet, she continues to fight to overcome her demons. This story is touching, fun, encouraging, and Annie Hughes gives you excellent details and buildup. Anna's interactions with her new surroundings, friends, and family are fun to read and I love the flirty scenarios.

I also extremely enjoyed the taste of culture added. This is not something as many authors do and I really appreciated this in her work. Definitely a good read!

I couldn't put the book down, it was that good! Great storyline! I like the relationships that were developed. I loved the meaning of her "lucky star" tattoo. I can't wait to read her 2nd book. The meaning behind the title is explained perfectly in the book. Anna was definitely given a 2nd chance at having a family who love, protect & care about her.

3.5 Interesting Debut Novel

This was not an easy subject as a first novel but AJ Love handled it pretty well.

I felt for Anna and appreciated how she finally found where she belong and felt safe at last.

However, I struggled with the writing style and the fact portions of the story were a lot of “tell and no show” : Anna did this and then did that and argued with someone and left etc. It felt surface level and I didn’t entirely connect with the characters. At least not as deeply as I first thought I would.

I was still interested and finished the book in one setting. Even if I was not emotionally attached, I still was involved and committed enough that I wanted Anna to find her HEA

While I may not into the author’s writing style, the plot itself is well developed and deserves to be read. The help of an editor would also be beneficial.

I had wanted to read this book because the disclaimer intrigued me. I don't like to read romance novels with HEA's. I like books tha have substanance and reality. I was provided this book for an honest review. I was informed in advance that there were grammar & formatting issues so I won't comment on that aspect of the book. Unfortunately I felt like I was reading two separate books with the same characters in each. One an unbelievable HEA and the other a gritty, realistic novel about a girl struggling to overcome her past and figure out who she was. This is the novel I wanted to read! The character in this book went from an unbelievably horrible childhood to becoming a member of high society over night. I did not find this to be believable. I have many questions as to how her father met her mother since they lived on two separate continents & were definitely not in the same social circles. I'm curious why she lived in England instead of Spain & I'm curious how they found her father who was never known to her. The novel had the potential to be a great read if the author stuck with the original theme on a girl overcoming her past and struggling to discover who she wanted to be. More research needed to be done to understand how victims in this circumstance deal with the situations encountered in the book and their struggle to overcome them. Unfortunately it is not realistic that a wealthy man swoops in to rescue from your past, takes you to his mansion & all is forgotten & your new life begins. I really wanted to love this book but the unrealistic aspects of it prevented me from doing so. Still think it could be good with changes.

I received a free copy of this book in a prize giveaway and I want to clarify that that fact does NOT influence my opinion. These thoughts are my own.

This isn't my usual read, I'll be completely honest. But when I started it, I was immediately catapulted into Anna's world. Right from the get go you have to feel for the poor girl over why she is where she is.
Annie captures the character's emotions wonderfully and, normally, when a main character spends so much time in their head, it's usually waffle just to get the backstory into the novel. But here...wow, it was entirely relevant to everything about the book.
I felt for her from the start, and when she moved to a new country, into a new home with a new family, I was right there with her during her struggles.
I am *cough* *splutter* *ahem* years old, and this took me right back to my teenage years...not in the way that I moved to America with a super-rich family (I wish!) but the feelings, the emotions, the uncertainties, the insecurities...the boys!!!!...it was also so heartwarming and endearing to read about how Anna dealt with her second chance. It actually, seriously made me warm and fuzzy inside!! And I am not usually a warm and fuzzy person (or at least, the stuff I read isn't!!!)
This book was fantastic, sad, happy, angry, frustrating, ecstatic, warm, pleasing...and whatever else you think of when you read about the abusive past life of a 16 yr old girl trying to come to terms with everything while it's still there, haunting her, never allowing her to truly let go.
Fabulous read, and hats off to Annie for doing such a wonderful job on her debut novel!!!

Breaking Free
Una Familia Segura

This book was a jump in two feet first read from the first page it had me wanting to know what happened to Anna .

At 16 years of age this girl has seen and been through to hell and back and back again .

The feeling of overwhelming emotion as you go through this journey with her is second to none .The book is so well written.

Anna is introduced to her father David for the first time in 16 year's.

David has a wife Mel and Mel has a son Logan and can't wait to get Anna home .

You can't help but love these characters as you begin to meet them and see how they open there hearts and home to Anna .

Logan and his mate Jake are very funny guys together they are like a comedy act and when Anna meets them .She feels something she hasn't felt in her short life .

Anna accepts she has to go with this new life but her doubts and ability to open up is a tough ride for her .

When Anna has to go to school she meets a lot of new people and although it's overwhelming for her she meets a girl Chole who befriends her .Anna let's her self accept it and wow Chole is all bubbly and beautiful maybe a breath of air for Anna to finally inhale.

I can honestly say I cried laughed gasped and devoured this book .
As a debut novel it rocks .

This is a book to shout about !! go on this beautiful rocky ride and let yourself feel it!! it will hit you like a ton of bricks .

This book was FANTASTIC! I'm not a huge fan of YA books, but when I saw that she was looking for ARC readers and read what it was about, I was intrigued. I am so happy that I took a chance on this book. What an emotional roller coaster! This book is about Anna, a 16 year old girl trying to come to grips with having a family and people that love her after suffering horrific abuse at the hands of her real mother, her grandparents and her stepfather. It shows how she tackles her issues head on and the strength she exhibits while trying to navigate a new world of cell phones and facebook and going back to school. It is wonderfully written and I'm shocked that this is her first book. I absolutely loved it. The only thing I didn't like is that it ended and I'm not ready to be finished with these characters that I have fallen in love with. Amazing story Annie - I look forward to seeing what else you come up with in what will determinately be a wonderful writing career!

***I received a ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review - Reviewer at Book Reviews & Takeovers.***

Anna's life has been filled with nothing but the worst the world has to offer. At sixteen years old, she is hospitalized, following a vicious act, when the father she's never known returns to her life.

This book follows her heart-wrenching journey through things that should only happen in nightmares. While it is sad and dark in most places, this story also is about redemption. Anna rises up from the ashes, if you will, of horrors no person should ever know and stands taller, day-by-day to become the young woman she was destined to be.

This debut novel is wonderfully executed. It will touch you on every level. Triumph in the face of tragedy is the theme, but the lesson is in how Anna gets there. Her story, although fictional, proves that there is nothing that can stop you from fighting for what it is you want in life.

Well done!

Some books just make writing reviews, simple. Trying to review this book, has been difficult. I can say I LOVED this book, but it would be an understatement. Anna is such an inspiring young woman. She has been threw so much in her life and after a tragic event her life is thrown from the UK to the US with a family she doesn't even know. Is this her Una Familia Segura? Everyone who knows me knows, I hardly every cry or get teary eyed from reading books (I do too much of it in real life). By the end of this book I had several tears sneaking our of my eyes. So that says a lot.

Annie Hughes writes so beautifully. Knowing this is her first book surprises me, I cannot wait to see what she has coming next. Love her and love this book. I would recommend this book to anyone ages 16+. 5 Million stars!!!

This is Annie Hughes' first book and it was a winner. The characters were full and complex. they grew as the story went on. Anna woke up in a hospital and a social worker was telling her they had arrested her step father for killing her mother and for attempted murder of her. Then she was told her father was outside. Her father walked in and introduced himself. They make plans to go to Maine in the US. Anne grows as she learns about her family and little by little she starts to trust and tell her story to her family. Then she has to go back to England to testify against her step father, she can barely breathe. Then she is told there is a secret witness for the defense and she worries he will find her and then her Grandparents want to fight for custody of her.
