Following Sterling's spectacularly successful launch of its children's classic novels (240,000 books in print to date),comes a dazzling new Classic Starts. The stories are unabridged and have been rewritten for younger audiences. Classic Starts treats the world's beloved tales (and children) with the respect they deserve.
From the sword in the stone and the founding of Camelot to the famed Round Table and the Lake of Enchantment, the legend of King Arthur will never lose its magic. Though simpler, this version includes all the wonderful stories—such as King Arthur’s winning of Guenievere and Merlin’s tragic downfall at the hands of the evil Vivien.
Howard Pyle was an American illustrator and author, primarily of books for young people.
During 1894 he began teaching illustration at the Drexel Institute of Art, Science and Industry (now Drexel University), and after 1900 he founded his own school of art and illustration named the Howard Pyle School of Illustration Art. The term Brandywine School was later applied to the illustration artists and Wyeth family artists of the Brandywine region by Pitz. Some of his more famous students were N. C. Wyeth, Frank Schoonover, Elenore Abbott, Ethel Franklin Betts, Anna Whelan Betts, Harvey Dunn, Clyde O. DeLand, Philip R. Goodwin, Violet Oakley, Ellen Bernard Thompson Pyle, Olive Rush, Allen Tupper True, and Jessie Willcox Smith.
His 1883 classic publication The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood remains in print, and his other books, frequently with medieval European settings, include a four-volume set on King Arthur. He is also well known for his illustrations of pirates, and is credited with creating the now stereotypical modern image of pirate dress. He published an original novel, Otto of the Silver Hand, in 1888. He also illustrated historical and adventure stories for periodicals such as Harper's Weekly and St. Nicholas Magazine. His novel Men of Iron was made into a movie in 1954, The Black Shield of Falworth.
Pyle travelled to Florence, Italy to study mural painting during 1910, and died there in 1911 from a kidney infection (Bright's Disease).
His sister Katharine Pyle was also a writer and illustrator. Their mother was the children's author and translator M.C. Pyle.
I recall buying one or two books of the Great Illustrated Classics every time I would visit the bookstore and I remember how I used to be delighted with the joy of getting on with it the moment I reached home. I used to appreciate the illustrations on every single page before even encountering the novel itself. I remember this book was almost the last one I got from this series and then I couldn't find it no more in the library. I, afterwards, started on buying unabridged classics and my affection for books peaked eventually.
This is my first encounter with King Arthur and the Arthurian literature. From the community's reviews, I learned that the unabridged version was way better than that short one. Although these versions would give you the main sequence of events of the story, it doesn't indulge the reader into lessons that should be learned and compassion that should be felt towards the protagonists. It would simply summarize the plot in a nutshell leaving out the meaningful aspects that are implied within the tale. This makes the book quite tedious to be read at times as you get the feeling of reading mere scenes with no foundational values whatsoever. Not to mention that the characters weren't enough studied and their personalities were vague to a great extent.
However, reading this book nowadays got me into these good old times were it wouldn't matter to me whether I had to know the virtues that should be learned out of the book, or the wisdoms lying behind the plot, rather I would simply read just to enjoy myself and get to know more about the reading world and the realms it can take me to.
This book series — The Great Illustrated Classics — are a nice way to introduce your children (and possibly, yourself) to the classics (despite their age). In this particular version of the Arthurian legend, it takes you through the discovery of King Arthur in the first three or four chapters (what the Disney classic movie, "The Sword in the Stone" retells) through the formation and demise of "the Round Table." Good work - my 8, 6, and 4 year old children were into it!
This is extra: I would advise reading these books with your children on a couch or somewhere you can all sit together, not while they are going to bed. There is one illustration per two pages, and my kids loved them. So, if I read to them while they are in their beds, they all want to hold the book individually and look at every single picture! : ) Needless to say, this book took forever. I learned they can look at the pictures all they want if we are sitting together on a couch - and no one needs to hold the book!
I thought that this book was pretty good. I admired King Arthur and his knights, and I enjoyed all of the jousting and fighting. I also really liked the fact that the knights valued women, God, and justice so much. Overall, this was an easy and exciting read that didn’t have any down time. However, there were so many characters and the chapters were so separated into individual adventures that I thought this book lacked some cohesiveness. The stories and characters were great, but I wish the writing had been done a little bit differently.
My sister says that this is one of my niece's favorite books and as such I chose to read it to break-up my one directional reading lately of journals, arcs and other nonfiction.
I haven't had a chance to read much of the Arthurian cycle but due to my deep study of mythoi I can already tell that this particular retelling is quite an anemic insult to the original cycle. As a result the events that are presented in the book are just the barest minimal salute to main events in the Arthurian lore if even that, the characters have been ironed into nothingness and the rich detail of fantasy has been but all evaporated up. It is truly sad that this is a beginner book and one considered a Classic. What this means is that the duplicitous conceiving of Arthur, the quest of the Holy Grail, the claiming of the Seat Perilous, the battle of the two wryms, the challenge of the Green Knight, the infamous affair, the hope of the entombed Merlin and so much more are missing
Something that I have to give props to, though, is that even though it is an introductory book for those who haven't read the deeper Classics this one is a lot more friendlier to the portrayal of certain members such as Guinevere and Launcelot while Guinevere's only awful deeds are how she is portrayed to a disguised Arthur. There is basically almost no sexual immorality in the book but instead a lot more battling and bloodshed so for those who are looking for a clean read there is a middle ground if you want to see it as such.
The illustrations are definitely not some of the best either. Most of the times the faces of the characters are some type of mangling and I notice that there is a lot more black used than is normal.
All in all my niece may enjoy this particular retelling and so may other younger audience or those who just need a quick read. But otherwise if you want adventure, courtly love, a story of morals and all the fantastical complexities known to Arthur this is one book to steer clear from.
Waylon says this one has everything a good book should have, a good plot, betrayal, a plot twist, and cool characters. King Arthur was his favorite character, tied for my favorite was Morgana Le Fay and Vivien.
It is obvious that the story was cut short in so many occasions, many many plots were missed and sudden updates happen without any further explanation, would suggest if ur interested in king Arthur's story, read the full book, not this one. But the good thing that it's decently lengthed and is very good for beginner readers and children.
The Story of King Arthur and His Knights is the first of an Arthurian quadrilogy by American author and illustrator Howard Pyle. Written in 1903, it largely follows Malory's account but expounds upon it a good deal. In this first volume, we have the following stories: The Book of King Arthur (how he became king, got Excalibur, married Guinevere, and established the Round Table) The Book of Three Worthies: - The story of Merlin (how he was bewitched and ultimately defeated by Vivien) - The story of Sir Pellias (how he quested for the Queen's honor (arguing that she was the most beautiful in the world, and would fight anyone who said otherwise)) - The story of Sir Gawaine (how he, to help Arthur, married an old woman who was not what she seemed)
Pyle's version differs from Malory's in two main ways: - it presents Arthur and his court in a better light. The unacknowledged sins I mentioned in Malory's version are much diminished or omitted; here, the court is more of an idealistic model of virtue. There is still pride and a "might makes right" mentality, but it is softened. And, at the end of major story divisions, Pyle often injects a moral. - it fleshes out the stories. In Malory, your given little-to-no backstory or explanation for why things happen. In Pyle, you get more: more description, dialogue, character development, and so on.
The language is archaic but easy enough to follow. Pyle's illustrations are great (though my version, from Esprios, had poor renderings of them). I liked how he filled out the stories and improved upon the presentation of virtue. It did get repetitive, and it ended rather abruptly. Overall, it was decent.
For some reason, only this first book is widely available; the other three are much harder to come by. I'm not sure why, but I look forward to reading them.
Reading is so much fun when you have students on the edge of their seats wondering what’s going to happen next. I’m so grateful I get to share my love of reading as a part of my job.
This legend is a classic and one I will definitely read to my own children one day. There’s something so magical about the medieval ages, chivalry, and fighting with honor and valor. Reading this also made me think of the show Merlin, which I loved growing up! A rewatch might be in the not too distant future…
Why is the solution to any conflict just to off people 💀 There are only two ways conflict between people is solved: mob the accused or joust to death. Literally people will get on bandwagon like a flick of a switch when any accusation is made. Sounds a lot like internet public execution aka cancelling but without the swords and horses. Like no wonder all these knights have beef. They all get angry at one another for “killing their brother” but yall are just doing the same by getting revenge. Also why are there so many kings. I feel like all of these knights are the sons of kings. Anyways I had to really turn my brain off for this sleepy book. Sounds silly but eerily relevant.
I was very ignorant when it came to these legends of King Arthur and Merlin and I was curious to know more. I’ve had this book for years but never read it. I started to grow more interest in the mythology of Camelot when it was first introduced on the television show, “Once Upon a Time”. The book starts off as Arthur as an infant. Merlin visits Arthur’s father telling him about how his father will die very soon and that he must give his infant son to him since he is destined to have great power and needs to be raised properly. Merlin gives the son to a man named Sir Ector. Sir Ector promises to never tell anyone including Arthur himself about his great power. The power is Excalibur of course the sword that only one noble person is able to pull. I like stories about fate and destiny but this one was very disappointing and not fun at all to read.I understand that this book is short and is basically a summary of a legend that was written and told thousands of years ago but still. Characters are very bland. I understand that since this book is only 240 pages there isn’t enough room for character personality and development but even Arthur the main character was bland and had no personality to him. In the Once Upon a Time version of Camelot King Arthur was very much a memorable and not bland as a character. Once Arthur pulls the sword out of the stone his father Sir Ector tells him everything. About how that he is not his real father ,Merlin and his destiny. Arthur is still just a teenager at this time and is still too young to truly understand everything that has happened and all the power that the sword holds. In the next chapter many years have past since Arthur first pulled excalibur and is now the King. I was watching a movie over the weekend and in the movie they did something similar. They did those massive leaps in time which I very much liked. I didn’t mind that much in this book as well but I wished they would have done something more with this leap in time. Now that Arthur has finally become king he will have to deal with many foes. The first foe he fights as the king is the Black Knight. The Black Knight did do some pretty harsh damage to Arthur and almost killed him! Merlin came to Arthur's rescue and had him healed. He wasn’t that important to the plot and was just there for the sake of being there. This next part of the book is the romantic part. I’ve never been a fan of romance at all except for in Indian films. Arthur pretends to be a gardener boy to see his love Guinevere. Guinevere finds out about it and loves him. After the marriage the round table is established. Merlin warns Arthur that when the 50th spot is taken of the round table is taken the kingdom will fall and it does. Now that I’ve pretty much addressed the story of the book I would like to give a bit more of my opinion on what I actually thought of the book. This book tried to cram way too much plot in for only two hundred pages. So much plot that would have been interesting in the story was just crammed in there and felt poorly written. They could have taken out a lot of stuff that wasn’t really all that important and focused on more important things such as the battle between Arthur and Sir Lancelot. Sir Lancelot was the reason why King Arthur's reign fell but was only introduced in the second to last chapter. That was too late in my opinion. As I said earlier I really wanted to look more in these ancient legends of King Arthur and Merlin and see how different people portray them. Once Upon a Time has there own special twist on this legend as I’m sure many other people have through books, movies and television shows. If you are like me and these kind of stories interest you don’t bother reading this book. Find another book or do some other research on this legend. This book had potential to be good and be short at the same time if maybe they skipped some parts of the story. This is a legend after all and legends are told differently. In conclusion to this I would probably give this book two out of five stars. The pros of the book being nice and easy to read, and gorgeous pictures. The cons being very bland characters, flat protagonist, and too much crammed in the story.
Arthur was looking for a sword for sir Kay, and he found a sword in the stone. whomever pulled the sword out of the stone shall be the King of England. Arthur didnt know this he just thought it was an ordinary sword. Be brought the sword to sir Kay. he knew what had happened, he called his father sir Ector. Arthur and sir Kay were brothers, but they weren't blood brothers. Arthur was the son of Uther-Pendragon, his birth was a secert. When he was borned the great wizard Merlin gave Arthur to sir Ector, and told him " raise him as your own" Once sir Kay and Arthur had gone to sir Ector, he knew what had happened. This is how Arthur became king.king Arthur's regin was a magical one. It was a time of sword play and sorcerers , wizards and wonders and dragons. Arthur ruled his lands with truth, honor and justice and love.
KIng Arthur fell in love with Lady Guinevere of the king of Cameliard. HE went to Cameliard as a gardener boy. While in the gardens of lady Guinevere one of the attendants , the lady Mellicene saw arthur in the fountain bathing. If i was Arthur i would be very happy to be near to the dearest to be. But if she caught me in her garden i would be heart broken. Arthur was engaged to Arthur and they were married in the caming months. I would be very happy if i was King Arthur. I hope i find mu hearts dearest someone.
King Arthur owned the legendery sword Excaliber, with which sword you can cut through a feather or an iron bar. " Which would u rather have Excalber or the sheath which holds it" asked Merlin " Why ten thousound times i would rather have Excaliber then its sheath" answered arthur. " In this you are wron, my lord" said Merlin. " It is true that Excaliber is so sharp that it can cut either a father or an iron bar in two, but its sheath is so magical that he who wears it will suffer no injuries in battle or loose a sigle drop of blood. As you saw in your last battle with king Pellinore you suffered no injuries whatsoever. This is one of the many things that makes King Arthur so legendery. If I had the might Excaliber i would feel unbeatable. With this very sword King Arthur fought many foes, all of which failed to defeat King Arthur.
The kinghts of the round table were the most honorable men in the entire county. They were the kights of truth always fighting for the poor and are the voice of justice. Sir Launcelot was the greatest of all the knights og the round table. He was known for his valor, his courage and his handosme appearance. No knight accomplished more difficultdeeds, no kinight saved nore ladies andno knight defended the weak as well as did sir Launcelot. HE was the most trusted knight of king Arhur in the round table. He was loved by everyone. He was also lady Guinevere's close friend. For this was his down fall there were rumors that he and lady Guinevere were more then friends. He was banished by the KIng and Lady guninevere was turned over to the church when she and sir Launcelot escaped and went to launcelot's castle. This was King Arthur's down fall. For his nephew sir Modred wante dto sezie the throne and wanted to kill Athur. He was the one who ploted against Arthur. If i was King Arthur I wouldnt"t have belived the rumors. I would have asked my wife and the love of my life Guinevere if there was anything between them. I would trust my friend launcelot and if i find out that there was something between them i would have there heads.
I would have loved to lived in the land of camelot and in the time of King Arthur , to me honest I would love to be King Arthur. He was the king of kings. He was rightous king of camelot. Long live the king!!!!!!!!
In this book king Arthur and he knights of the round table by Howard Pyle. The main characters of this book are king Arthur, Merlin, lady Guinevere and sir Lancelot. In Britin King Arthur and the people of his kingdom go through a lot together and king Arthur always finds a way to save them. In Britain Arthur father wants Arthur to be king some day but in tell then Merlin takes Arthur to another family in tell he is of age and can prove that he can be king. When Arthur pulls Excalibur from the stone he is pronounced the new king and a while after he became king Merlin made the round table and got only the most noble of knights to sit at the table his closest knight was sir Lancelot. but sir Lancelot loses his trust and is no longer part of the round table.
One of the life lesson i have learned out of this book is as humans we tend to try to really stupid thing for the people we care about. When sir Lancelot took something that was very fallible to the king and himself. Another is when king Arthur meets lady Genevieve and dose some not so smart challenge to a knight who also wants the lady's hand in marriage. Also when Arthur pulls the sword from the stone and his step dad starts crying and starts saying random things.
I really liked this book because of all the adventure and i would say there was a little bit of mystery because you never know what quest they mitt go on next. when in on of the chapters the "white knight returnees"you never know if he is going to come back or if he will come back and win. This book is full of twists and turns I LOVE TWISTS AND TURNS. My favorite part is is the end when sir Lancelot kind of goes a little rebel when he takes that something very dear to the king. Best book ever.

Personal Response I liked this book a lot. It was very interesting, and kept me interested throughout the whole book. It was also easy to read which was nice.
Plot Summary The book starts out with a boy named Arthur, pulling a sword out of a giant boulder. According to legend whoever did this was the rightful king of England. He becomes the king of England and becomes a great leader. He creates the round table of knights, gets his new sword, Excalibur, and fights against treason to the throne. The book follows him through these adventures and many more.
Recommendation I would recommend this book to people who aren't the best readers. I would also recommend this book to people who are interested with medieval times. I think they would like this book because it is about kings, castles, and knights.
Characterization In the begging of the book Arthur is just a young, 18 year old boy, who was just an esquire to a knight. Throughout the book he becomes a king and learns how to fight like a true man. He turns into a great leader by the end of the book, who will do anything for his kingdom.
King Arthur is one of the most bravest and wisest king of England. At the time King Arthur's father Uther Pendragon the previous King of England, had handed his son Arthur to a powerful magician named Merlin. As time passed Arthur had learned what had happened after pulling a magical sword out of a boulder. Arthur eventually fell in love with princess Guenivere the daughter of the King of Cameliard. Which led him to various quests like forming the Knights of the Round Table.
King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table is one of the most adventurous books I've ever read. I think that be humble is one of the themes. Since Arthur had grown up as a normal person he hadn't acted so arrogantly when he pulled out the sword. The author’s message is to not fight against your friends or else things will go bad. Just how King Arthur decided to keep fighting non-stop until he himself and everyone of the knights were dead. Overall, I think it was a great book it had a lot of action, magic, and sad moments.
A good adaptation of the classic stories for younger kids.
Hanft glosses over some of the more disturbing aspects of life back then, not to mention a few of the relationships. It works well for younger kids who can thrill to the adventure of the stories without having to deal with some of the worse aspects of human nature. The first tales dealing with Arthur's birth and drawing the sword from the stone were barely changed but I felt he made Arthur a bit too naive. However, the characterization flowed well into the later tales after Merlin disappeared from the world of men.
The adaptation of the final story tugs at the heart as much as the original. This was not an easy task, but Hanft did it quite well so as to not scare younger kids while still getting the lessons of Camelot across to them.
A must read for parents looking for bedtime stories or who want to carefully add more grown-up themes into their kids' reading. Recommended also for lovers of the Arthurian legends and mythology in general.
