We're all screwed up: (and that's ok)

Rate this book
In the UK it is is said that 1 in 4 people has a mental health problem. This means that 3 in 4 don't. This is simply not true. We all have our screw ups. Maybe what we should say is that 1 in 4 people is currently experiencing some kind of mental health problem that is getting in the way of their day-to-day lives. In this down-to-earth, jargon-free book, Dawn uses her experience from working with hundreds of clients as a therapist, and from her own abusive childhood, to explore the problems we all experience as adults. She will help you realise that we are all screwed up, and that it doesn't stop you functioning. She will help you understand where common problems such as depression, anxiety and addictions come from, and give you some approaches to overcome them. If you have a problem with a car, you get a mechanic to help you. If you have a problem with a muscle, you go to a physiotherapist. Why is it when you have a problem with your head you assume you should be able to work it out on your own? Everyone is screwed up. Most people function perfectly well despite their screw ups.

Dawn Walton was born in North Wales in 1972. She spent many years travelling the world as a consultant and had a very successful career. But she was never happy. When her daughter started asking "Are you happy mummy?" she realised that she needed to do something.

She came across a therapist called Trevor Silvester, based in Harley Street in London, and from the first session with him her life changed. As it turned out, he was the founder of Cognitive Hypnotherapy.

Dawn realised that everything in her life had led her to that point and trained to become a Cognitive Hypnotherapist herself.

She now runs a successful practice in Dundee and Aberdeen, Scotland. She also believes if you can make a difference to one person, no matter how small, then it's a good thing. As a result she does 50% of her therapy online via Skype and Facetime - allowing her to reach as many people as possible.

The Caveman Rules of Survival came from her experiences as a therapist and form the basis for her therapy approach.

I just. I can't even. Firstly, if you break your bone, the first thing your hospital should do is an x-ray, not a cast. Secondly they may need to do supplements or screws depending on the type of break and reason for said break. Thirdly, if you cut yourself on the way down while falling which resulted in the break, that won't just magically stop the bone from healing in the time frame needed, that isn't how that works. It isn't like hey body hold up a moment, we have a superficial cut and you cant start your heal for like a week, 2 weeks tops. Fourthly, each broken bone takes a different duration depending on thickness of said bone. Lastly, as someone with a chronic condition that effects collagen, I can't just be like, yo, my subconscious will fix this. And that's when I decided this book was the worst, second to you saying you didn't die because captain obvious, if you did I wouldn't be reading the book you wrote. Hardest eye rolls and face palm I've ever given a book.

Interesting book with a combination of the authors biography and some self help. Very helpful and good to consider why we think like we do and what we can do about it. Makes you feel better about struggling. Recommended.
