Czas wyborów

Rate this book

Wszystkie osoby urodzone poza granicami kraju zostają zmuszone do natychmiastowego opuszczenia państwa.

Timely and not too hard to imagine right now, this is like a mix of Brexit and Trump's wall with two startcrossed lovers and a pinch of mystery.

The party (event) where Sophie died is a thread that spans the entire book, but the Party (politics) that's enforcing the British Born policy and deportation of foreign nationals is definitely the driving force. Zara and Ash's relationship is all-consuming to them, but I wasn't feeling it. The supporting characters, especially Ash's friends and Zara's family dynamic, give a well rounded perspective from all viewpoints, which they kind of had to do I guess... but there's definitely a good side and a bad side to the government/supporters here.

Maybe it's just because of the current climate here in the UK with Brexit hanging over us, but while this is a mystery/romance, the politics and effect on our humanity is the stand out theme for me. I would have liked to see more of Zara and her family though; a real sense of their life here for it to really be a message that *might* change some people's opinions on this matter. In fact, I want to read this book again without the death and the mystery so I can really get my teeth into it!

But for now, a non-commital 3 stars.

Night of the Party is an eerily timely young adult novel set in a post-Brexit Britain led by a nationalist party who forces everyone who is not BB (British Born) to return to their country. Protagonist Zara was born in Romania but grew up in the UK and so for her to have to return to a country she doesn't know seems incomprehensible yet it's the heartrending reality. It's either hiding out and fearing that with every step set outside she'll be asked for ID and identified as an illegal and deported, or trying to escape to the safety just beyond British borders.

Matters are made even more complicated by her friendship with a boy named Ash who she doesn't want to leave behind and her own mother's relationship with a British woman who will need to flee with them if they do decide to go. Zara's journey throughout the novel was a horrifying one (especially to a European citizen living in the UK like myself) but hugely eye opening too to the horrors that really don't sound all that far from our current reality.

This is a very thought provoking read and one I hope will serve as a warning for what can happen if we as a collective don't make the necessary steps for change.

Historie poznajemy z dwóch punktów widzenia - Zary i Asha.

WHO IS YOUR NEXT DOOR NEIGHBOUR? REMEMBER: YOU HAVE A LEGAL OBLIGATION TO REPORT ILLEGALS MAXIMUM PENALTY: £1000 FINE OR 6 MONTHS’ COMMUNITY SERVICE

My hands were shaking. I was living through this book. I had to put my Kindle away repeatedly and remind myself that it was fiction. It's fiction. It's fiction...

Reading the part of the book about the elections was like going through that referendum again. Trust me, Tracey Mathias got it 100% right. The second half of the book it is more of a thriller than a dystopia; I'd say it's a YA dystopian thriller. (Power cuts occur from time to time and everyone is required to carry an ID). It gets really, really tense.

I'm a bit like Zara, so that tells you all you need to know about how much this book means to me and how grateful I am that it was written.

This was a book that feels ‘of the moment’ but it wasn’t totally successful for me.
Our story is set after Britain leaves the EU, and is under the control of The Party. In this chilling world anyone not born in the UK is declared illegal. Subject to ID checks and the pressure to leave, they have no rights and anyone supporting them is in trouble.
Our main characters are Romanian-born Zara and English schoolboy Ash. Though they don’t know it, they have a link. Ash’s sister, Sophie, died at a party. Zara, who was a close friend (unknown to the family) saw something that could shed light on what happened. Unfortunately, due to her precarious position she can’t go to the police.
There seemed to be a number of stories here: the political situation, the developing relationship between Zara and Ash and the scenario surrounding Sophie. While each of them was interesting, none really got the attention they seemed to need so I was left with a feeling of things not quite being explained fully.

To żałosne!

Wiecie orędzia premier, decyzje partii, rozporządzenia i zapisy. Gdyby zachowano tytuł angielski, albo nadano jakiś związany z imprezą to chyba byłoby lepiej.

'Night of the Party' is written by UK debut author Tracey Matthias. It imagines a post-Brexit Britain where the governing party have introduced a new policy dictating that only those British Born or BB as they are known, have the right to live in Britain. Everyone else is treated as an illegal and subject to immediate deportation. It's a frightening look at a post-Brexit world where peoples' human rights are threatened and where suspicion is rife. People are expected to automatically report anyone they know or suspect to be an illegal, leading to an atmosphere of fear and suspicion among communities.

The story focuses on two characters who meet at the beginning. They are 'illegal' Zara and British born Ash. They find themselves on opposite sides of the citizenship debate, although they are also linked in a way that Ash doesn't realise about until part way through the story. Nevertheless they form a powerful bond which goes beyond nationality and bridges issues of love and family.

What I thought was particularly interesting about this book was that the scenario created by Tracey Matthias isn't completely impossible or as far removed from reality as you would think. The author herself states that it started out as a 'what if' political dystopia but shifted worryingly close to real life. The novel actually presents a political situation that could very well end up becoming true at some point in the future and that's an incredibly scary thought.

I have to admit that this isn't normally the type of book that I would choose to pick up and at times I found the story quite slow. However, it was a thought-provoking read which definitely made me think about aspects of politics that I hadn't considered before.

This book invites you into a world where there are illegals and legals. Zara is illegal (not born in Britain) and Ash is not. You follow both their interwoven stories as Zara tries to avoid deportation and Ash tries to help her. Both stories are connected by the mysterious death of Ash's sister, Sophie.

The political back drop of this book doesn't seem too far-fetched and it was interesting to explore. However, the stories focus on the mystery of Sophie deters from what's actually interesting which is the setting.

The book fell a little flat for me, the coincidences that kept cropping up infuriated me and the romance distracted from the message. I felt like the book was meant to be sending the reader a message of why we need to avoid this world becoming a reality but it was lost between the lines of teen romance and angst.

Zara ended up in a deportation center, which was added I think to show you the horrible reality of what this world would look like, however the way in which she ended up here seemed ridiculous as she turned herself in after hiding for ages. The decision seemed out of character and added just to push the story along.

The book wasn't all bad, it was well written, Zara's story was interesting and the ending was dramatic and well done.

Mostly, this book fell flat for me as it was trying to say one message whilst also burying it under loads of other unimportant story lines.

In this dystopian thriller set in post-Brexit Britain, two teenagers fall for each other but are kept apart by strict anti-immigration policies. Zara is not British Born and so faces deportation. She wants to tell Ash what she knows about his sister's death - but doing so could expose her to the police. As the book's cover says - 'how do you speak out when you have no rights?' Ash meets Zara seemingly by chance and starts to fall for her, little realising how much she is hiding. And the suspense builds from there - taking in the mysterious 'night of the party', Zara and Ash's story and that of the country itself falling prey to xenophobic paranoia.

I picked up this book partly because on the cover it said that it was set in post-Brexit Britain. What will our society be like if/when we leave the EU? How could our lives change as a result of this huge leap in the dark? The picture the novel paints is pretty bleak, suggesting that extreme right-wing parties would take control. But although fear of immigration was of course a factor in the referendum on leaving the EU, there are so many other interesting issues that could have been explored - misinformation, cyber wars, the economic consequences, Britain's global status. Nevertheless, it's a novel not a politics essay and I'm glad to see a YA book tackling the subject of Brexit. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a good mystery or dystopian thriller inspired by recent events.

"It´s not fascism. ... It´s common sense. Look. We´re a small island. We´ve got limited resources and limited space. And anyway, the government can´t just spend money it doesn´t have. Anyway, that´s the whole point. We´ve got limited resources. So people who were born here should come first. That´s all the BB policy is."

"This election is personal"... I mean, it hits a weird note of being too timely to enjoy, with good writing and an interesting secondary cast, but a plot that feels far too contrived and two protagonists who I couldn't buy in to.

The ending left me dissatisfied. And I would have preferred much clearer show of ethical viewpoints.

I read it to evaluate if it is appropriate for our upper primary students, and I honestly don't know the answer to that. My personal distaste for a fiction work that so closely mirrors the global rise of fascism makes it difficult to truly appraise its merits for our pupils.

I finished this book in one day, my first fiction in years. It hit so close to home that I couldn't put it down. With so much xenophobia, racism and discrimination around in real life, it was terrifying to see how much worst things could become and what populism can lead to. Neighbourhood watch seemed always such a great project where neighbours can look after each other, but I guess I forgot that good intentions can turn bad in no time. I can't get this sign out of my head:

This book doesn't do it for me. The premise great and very interesting, but it ended up more as some sort of dramatic love story inside this setting. I absolutely can't with instalove that becomes completely irrational. The characters felt flat to me because of that, as all they could think about was each other (I'm not joking), and I wish it had been a bit more about Zara's family experiencing this situation. The writing was okay, nothing remarkable. I think this book could've been more interesting if Zara and Ash' relationship was focussed on friendship rather than love.

A very good look into what anti-immigration policy could end up looking like if far-right parties ever took over the UK. If you're a fan of games like Not Today, definitely read this book. Alternatively, like this book? Play Not Today and Papers, Please!, you'll enjoy them, I promise.

The only thing that's not giving this a four stars is that the romance is a bit unbelievable. I just wasn't as invested in it as the writer wanted me to be, but she had a very well thought out dystopia here so I'm down for that at least!

Tracey Matthias’s stand-alone YA romantic thriller is set in a frighteningly plausible dystopian postBrexit Britain where the country is an insular, quasi-racist State with rolling blackouts and traffic restrictions. I enjoyed the developing relationship between Ash and Zara (especially how Mathias highlights their different experiences) but he mystery element lacks tension and the ending may leave some readers disappointed.

I read a lot of dystopian society books and this had the feeling of a dystopian society; except it was hyper realistic because of things going on in the UK currently (brext). It was really exciting to read and was quite fast paced. Initially I though the ending was a bit open, but after finishing the book I decided it was intended to be that way, and a more closed ending may not have made sense in this sort of story

Loved this debut novel! Thought provoking, engaging and cleverly written in a way that forced you to will for the characters without even realising you were falling in love with them. The romance in this was executed well and I found myself rooting for them to work out. An improvement for me personally would to have a bit more politics judiciously placed into this book as it would have been immensely interesting. Great read. x x

Night of the Party is the YA book of 2018 I'd like to put in the hands of everyone.

Brexit has happened. The Party are in power. If you aren't British Born (BB), you're out (a few exceptions -- but not many). Illegals must be reported to the National Agency (NA). Rolling blackouts pepper the narrative, alternately told from Zara (illegal) and Ash's (BB) point of view.

You'll either FLY through it or take ages -- because it's too much for long stints.

Excellent, excellent book.

This novel is about Britain leaving the EU while being governed by a far right party. They have made a new policy which states only British born people are allowed to live in Britain. The plot follows the life of an ‘illegal’ called Zara while dealing with the struggles of hiding from the police and a love story.
I really enjoyed this book because I’m interested in politics and even though this is a fictional book, the current political climate made this novel very gripping and exciting.

this book is terrifying because it could happen. the way it works in the book is so real, it makes you think about who you are.

I bought this book cos I wanted to see their interpretation of post-Brexit, and for once the story between the two main characters ended up being better! it left me wanting more, more sophie, more them together etc. i really did enjoy this book - 4/5

Interesting ideas of what could happen if England leaves the EU. Full of xenophobia, love, rebellion, and politics (but not too much). England almost becomes a police state and deports anyone who is not British Born. Also, Scotland has independence (yay Scotland).
