It’s a hell of a bachelorette party when you wake with a stranger in your bed. Then hell gets even hotter when you remember you are the bride. But the guy is hot, so maybe it ain’t all bad. Wait, wait, what are you thinking?
But then hell really turns up the flames when you get the phone call telling you one of your dearest friends, Angie, is dead, murdered type dead. Well at least you have an alibi, but not one you want to use under almost any circumstance.
In The Last Night Out; Suzanne, Carole Anne, Kelly, Angie and bride Maggie are the closest of friends. They celebrate Maggie’s upcoming nuptials to wealthy and socially prominent Flynn at Carol Anne’s house, and afterwards Maggie, Suzanne and Angie decide to finish the night at a Rush street bar. It is refreshing to read a mystery set in Chicago rather than L.A or New York.
Maggie is the lucky bride, and the “author” of this “manuscript” that comes into Kelly's possession years after the events, so there is an epilogue and a postscript. It is an interesting concept of the author and works well.
I liked the different POVs, even though they are Maggie’s creations for the manuscript.
I enjoyed the twist and turns of this story, I thought Catherine O’Connell did an excellent job with her plotting and characterizations.
The five women are far from perfect; for some, their sins would keep a priest in shock for a long time, especially in 1988 when all this takes place. A few of the other women are more sinned against than sinning,
I also thought The Last Night Out was an original story and I was caught by surprise several times, although O’Connell’s steps were logical.
There was one plot twist I either missed or misunderstood. I’m going to blame the author for not being clear enough.
Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC in exchange of a fair and honest review.

This book is presented as a twisted mystery: a bachelorette party ends with one friend murdered. But what category this really falls into is women’s fiction. There just happens to be a murdered friend and her death is used as an excuse to explore myriad personal issues.

The first 150 pages of the book are chock-full of drama and background on all the friends of the murdered woman, Angie. This was hella clunky and obvious – information dumping with zero finesse and most of it was unnecessary to the plot.

Instead, we get to read relationship conversations/arguments, people’s husbands being gay, a bunch of people cheating, questioning an upcoming wedding, fretting over possibly being pregnant and multiple scenes detailing overbearing, unloving rich parents who literally had nothing to do with the outcome of the story. Nor did these scenes resonate in such an emotional way that they hooked me or invested me in the characters’ lives.

When the book opened with Maggie waking up after her bachelorette party to a phone call from her friend saying, “I have terrible news! Angie has been murdered!” and Maggie replied something along the lines of, “That’s devastating, but I also have terrible news! I cheated!” – that’s when I knew something was very off with the tone of the book.

The characters were unlikable. Their reactions were unlikable. And their personal issues were shallow and uninteresting in comparison to a fucking murder investigation (!!!) that hardly got any page time. This was so lopsided to me and I just wanted these bitches to shut it.

And if you’re looking for the killer to be introduced as a character at any obvious point, keep waiting.

If you’re into personal relationship drama with a hint of mystery, you might like this. For me, it was glaringly lopsided. Murder victims are always more interesting, and more dramatic, than “oh, no I’m so scared to get married!”

I thought this was a fast-paced, twisty, entertaining, and unpredictable thriller that had me guessing until the end. Just when I thought I had it all figured out, in came another twist.

Six friends, one wild bachelorette party, a shocking murder, and a whole lot of secrets going on! Follow the police investigation to see what secrets they unravel as they search for a killer.

I was quite surprised at how much I really enjoyed reading this one. Overall, this was a unique juicy thriller full of secrets, deception, jealousy, and murder... and I loved every minute of it!

Many thanks to NetGalley and Black Thorn for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

6 friends, 1 is getting married, 1 party, only 5 survive the night which leaves 1 massive mystery and the 5 friends trying to come to terms with what has happened and find out what really happened
As always with stories like this it takes a bit of time to ‘set the scene’ and ‘meet the players’, find out about them and get to the place where you can, as a reader, say ‘right, I know who you all are and what you have been doing, lets figure this out’, unlike some books I found this build up to be anything but a chore as the 6 have such secrets and lies interwoven in their lives it was exciting and tbh quite shocking!
Once you get to know them you are then led to solve the mystery in this fast paced psychological, action, at times humourous, reflective book, the style of writing and narrative changed with each character, at times it was like reading a Jackie Collins, other times it reminded me of a Lousie Candlish, it could have been confusing and ‘too much’ but imo it wasnt, different yes but the author brought it all together and the ending ( where you find out ‘whodunit’ ) is explosive and then ends with a sentence that changes everything.......only then to, surprisngly, have another chapter that shakes it all up again!
There are ‘Americanims’throughout and some American slang which made me grimace but a few words to ‘get over’ are 1000% worth it to be immersed in this at times frantic yet other times touching delight of a book, I loved it

I want to thank the publisher "Blackthorn"and Netgalley for the opportunity of reading this terrific book!I

This book revolves around six friends, though five of them are the major focus of the complex story. There is murder, adultery, many lies, backstabbing, jealousy, Dark humor and some really interesting and fun storylines that follow each of the women and the men or (lack of men) in their lives. The story reminds me of a modern day "Peyton Place" for those of you who remember or have heard of that long ago wonderful nighttime soap opera that touched on many taboo subjects for that era. This book had everything and then something more. A wonderfully written story that takes place in 1988 and the author captures the feel and nuances of that time with such precision and fine tuning that I forgot it was the present year, and with so many twists and shockers, it may keep you reading well into the night!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I happily recommend it to any reader who loves the flair of exciting drama and I have given a rating of 4 1/2 Relevant 🌟🌟🌟🌟✴ Stars!!

ARC for review. Reissue to be published December 9, 2024, originally published 2018 as THE LAST NIGHT OUT.

1 unenthusiastic star.

It’s Saturday, early morning, fourteen days until Maggie’s wedding. She wakes up the morning after her bachelorette party with a hangover and a stranger beside her in bed. So, perhaps she is not quite ready for commitment? We have no time to parse this because there’s a phone call. It’s Suzanne, Maggie’s best friend. Angie, another friend who was at the party is dead.

Sounds like quite the party.

So, I got suckered into reading this book with the listed publication date of December 2024. It was previously published in 2018 as THE LAST NIGHT OUT, I don’t think Inread it then, but it wasn’t good, so it’s possible I did and I’ve blocked the whole thing out. Just like Maggie “forgot” she was engaged, I guess.

The action here is set in 1988 and there may be some plot-driven reason for that, but if there is, I can’t recall it. This reads like a book Jackie Collins started then rejected; it’s not so bad it’s good, it’s just puerile.

Oh, and Angie’s mother’s name is Ida Lupino. Ida Lupino. Do you think it’s possible the author didn’t know there was a very famous actress named Ida Lupino? Because she makes no reference to her. I think she didn’t know. And that’s just shameful. Oh, and the end was super heavy handed and really judgy, too. Why I finished this is beyond me. Save yourselves!

3.5 ⭐️ rounded up to 4

Not the usual type of bachelorette party. It was fun and games until the bride slept with someone else and one of the bridesmaids was found dead in the woods the following morning. The police investigation reveals that the women are hiding information relevant to the case, and more and more secrets are revealed. The killer also has secrets and is stalking them. The police need to find out the truth in this twist filled plot before someone else from the group of women is sought out by the killer. This is a fast paced and well written YA story. I very quickly read this book as I wanted to find out just what had occurred to make the killer strike.

I would like to thank NetGalley, Black Thorn and the author Catherine O'Connell for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Unique, intricate, and twisty!

The Last Night Out is a complex, character-driven thriller that takes us back to the 1980s and into the lives of Maggie Trueheart and her five closest friends as a night of revelry and celebration leaves their worlds irrevocably changed forever.

The prose is vigorous and tense. The characters are secretive, multilayered, and suspicious. And the plot, including all the subplots, unravel and intertwine into a sinister tale of deception, manipulation, jealousy, revelations, empowerment, mayhem, violence, murder, and a touch of romance.

Overall, The Last Night Out is an unpredictable, tight, entertaining read by O’Connell that kept me guessing until the very end and did an exceptional job of highlighting just how easily lives can become mixed up and entangled.

Thank you to Black Thorn Books and Midas PR for providing me with a copy in exchange for an honest review.

This book was alright. Not a single character was likable, and it didn't exactly blow me away, but it held my interest throughout. Plus the ending was actually a surprise and caught me off guard, so kudos for the author on that point. So yea, I don't really have much more to say about it. *shrug*

Six friends, Maggie, Angie, Carol Anne, Suzanne, Kelly, and Natasha all enjoy a night celebrating Maggie's Bachelorette party. When the nights draws to a close, Maggie, Angie and Suzanne decide to carry on the fun in a bar in town. Fast forward to the next day, Angie is found murdered in a park and Maggie wakes up with a strange man in her bed. Life as the five remaining friends know it will never be the same again.
Catherine O'Connell's, The Last Night Out, grabbed my attention from the start and didn't let go until the end. Great book.

Tis the era of female suspense thrillers. And there are so many of them out there, they can’t all possibly all measure up. This is one of those lesser ones. Bachelorette party and then one found dead. Too many characters and none are particularly fascinating or compelling. The novel utilizes the multiple narrative standard, the novel utilizes a lot of genre clichés actually, it just isn’t that interesting. In fact it’s essentially a female fiction drama with a murder in it, a tale of too many relationships without even a working concept of fidelity. And which one of these cheaters is responsible for the murder? Tune in and find out, or not…save yourself some time. The novel is told from a looking back perspective and set in the 1988, although the details don’t seem to matter. Maybe don’t have your character watching Seinfeld then, the show that premiered a year later. That’s a hugely popular tv show too and a really easy thing to check, seems like something the author or editor or proofreader should have noticed. But then again it goes well with the overall quality. The only saving grace here is the ending, where the author tries to be clever and throw in the prerequisite twist, but it isn’t really worth the 300 pages preceding it. And also, yes, 33 year olds were older and more mature on average in 1988 than nowadays, but to hear a 33 year old (then or now) repeatedly bemoaning middle age is infuriatingly tedious. Underwhelming, barely average genre read for undemanding audience with fairly low standards for their mysterious thrills. Readable, but that’s about it. Was an uninspiring selection made due to sleepiness and a reminder to be more vigilant with reading choices in the future. Thanks Netgalley.

Gripping, thrilling, and a roller-coaster ride! This book is a must read for any fan of suspense, thriller type books. Wow! I loved this book! This was my first book by Catherine O'Connell and I was very impressed! It was so well written, and captivating, it pulled me in from the very first page - in face from the very cover of the book I was hooked!

Six friends, an upcoming wedding, a murder.... What happen on the night one of them died? Who is telling the truth? Who is lying? Which lies are they telling and what do they have to hide?

This is a page turner of a book that will have you up reading into the late hours of the night as you want to keep reading more to find out what will happen next. I read this book in about a day and it was so hard to put down, it held my interest throughout. Never a dull moment in the book, a lot of shocking twists and turns, and a few finals oh-my-gosh moments at the end, this book was a pleasure to read and review. Just when I thought I had it all figured out I was proven wrong. Again and again.

Overall this book was a fantastic read, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it from cover to end.

A group of girl friends are out celebrating Maggie's bachelorette party. It's all fun and games until one of them ends up dead in the woods the next morning. My immediate thought was, who did it!? I had to know what happened to Angie so, I started reading like a mad woman.

Catherine's fluidity of words created a smooth ride until the last chapter. The beautifully detailed narrative, helped me play out every scene in my mind. Each word felt like I was biting into a fresh donut. Sounds tasty right? Now think of it in a literary sense, it was so satisfying that I never lost sight of the storyline or characterization of each individual.

Even though this novel had a decent amount of different personalities, I had the chance to understand each and every one. Even the characters with small roles had a voice. I appreciated the fact that her development didn't falter. It kept a steady pace until the climax. And boy what a climax! I would have never guessed the outcome. Angie's killer will keep you guessing no matter how hard you'll try to piece it all together.

Overall, a thrilling read that'll suck you into a world filled with betrayals, secrets and an unforgivable murder. The Last Night Out will not be the last book I read by Catherine. She's a fantastic author and I can only imagine what's in store for us next!

I was intrigued by the setup of this book about a bachelorette's party gone wrong with the bride-to-be in bed with someone who is not the groom and one of the bridesmaids found dead the next morning. Who is lying? What happened? My initial impression based on the excerpt from Amazon was that it would appeal more to fans of thrillers who are also strong fans of romances and women's fiction and who don't mind unlikeable characters rather than readers looking for a deeper read. I liked the hook of the fiancée looking back in time to 1988. Once I received the full copy of the book thanks to Severn House Publishers, I did find it to be enjoyable enough to be entertained. Some of the attempts to set it in 1988 were amusing – was disco really still around in 1988? I liked the twists and turns. I was put off a bit by the poor body self-image shown by the female characters. One was shown with a small weight gain that took more significance in her life than it should have. Another initially was so content with herself she shunned any work from her plastic surgeon husband but then later (small spoiler) was happy to get unlimited surgery with her divorce. Overall, it was a good light beach read.

Thanks to NetGalley, Severn House Publishers and the author Catherine O’Connell for an electronic reading copy.

A bachelorette party that went wrong(or right?) Well, not for all the participants.

Six best friends, six different backgrounds and life stories, too many drinks, a one-night-stand that turned into the best sex ever for a bride to be and a bachelorette party that ended with a murder.

A gripping and entertaining read with many twists and unexpected turns, many point of views and many hidden secrets that would be revealed and that would have been undiscovered if a bachelorette party hadn't gone wrong (or right?).

I am not sure how I feel about this mysterious ending though...It has the both: a WOW- and a WAS-IT-REALLY-NECCESERY-moment.

First of all!! i was so intrigued by the blurp of this book!!

Secondly, i found the cover great and in connection with the story, blurp and title!

I liked the characters as well as the main character! The main plot of the story and its subject i found a breath of fresh air to your usual psychological thriller! Also i did not see the end coming!

Definitely recommend this book! you should include it in your summer list of books!! :D

If you are looking for any fairy tale endings, you aren't going to find them in this thriller, but you will definitely find dark and disturbing!

The Last Night Out by Catherine O'Connell is one wild ride! It was so unpredictable, twisty, and addicting that I read it in one day and one sitting. I can't say I liked any of the characters all that much, but some of the things that happened just made me feel so bad for them. I really enjoyed the style of writing, and I can tell I am going to have to read everything O'Connell writes from now on.

The mystery and ending were so shocking, and I didn't see the big reveal coming in the slightest. The end of the book had me on the edge of my seat, although I would say that most of the book is a slow burn while still being paced well enough that you don't want to put it down. There are so many layers to The Last Night Out and the plot was very complex. It is definitely on the gritter side so if you like books like that I highly recommend reading this one!

Thank you to the author for providing me with an advance review copy of this book! All opinions and thoughts are my own.
