Seafront #2

Summer Season on the Seafront

Rate this book

In the little town of Greenley-on-Sea, summer has arrived. The turquoise waters of the sea sparkle in the sunlight and along the beach’s promenade, holiday-makers spill from ice-cream parlours and vintage shops.

For Sarah, summer brings the chance for a fresh start. As well as playing Miranda in the Greenley Players’ production of The Tempest (where she’ll get to spend loads of time with her best friends Lottie and Sid) she finally feels ready to find love again after surviving heartbreak. Could handsome colleague Dr Finn Macdonald be the very man she’s looking for?

Famous actor Nate finds himself hiding out in Greenley whilst a potentially career-ruining scandal blows over. But when the Greenley Players get wind of his arrival, they draft him in to help out with their performance – and Nate certainly doesn’t bank on his instant connection with the beautiful woman in the lead role…

As the temperature rises and the Players’ performance draws closer, can Sarah and Nate overcome their pasts and find love again?

My Rating:

4.5

Favorite Quotes:

Sarah sent Lottie the SOS message. For her and Lottie, SOS meant Sort of Scared. Which she was, on several fronts. Dean’s capacity for consuming Chinese food verged on the terrifying and knowing that if the date continued he may well expect a kiss at some point filled Sarah with the sort of fear she hadn’t experienced since watching Chucky as a kid.

Today had been hotter than Satan’s underpants.

Sarah hid behind her menu for a moment to regain her composure thinking about something completely un-sexy like Donald Trump… She popped her head back up and stopped picturing Trump ’s strange wig-like hair and Oompa Loompa face.

He had a nice mouth and she’d always imagined his kisses would be soft and gentle, and not like having a sink plunger attached to her face, which she had, unfortunately, experienced before.

My Review:

This was a fun and witty rom-com with a few heart-squeezing issues and a side order of stubbornness. I enjoyed Ms. Ginger’s crisp writing style, it was brightly entertaining and easy to follow yet pleasantly engaging and wryly amusing. Her characters were endearingly quirky and humorously detailed. This was my first exposure to the author, who was quickly added to my new favorites list. And it has been a while since I’ve had an addition to my Brit Word List and Ms. Ginger has provided me with dustman – which is a garbage collector, and squiffy – which is slightly drunk (and oh, so, fun to say).

First of all that title! Try to say it five times fast! Kind of fun and a little complicated, just like this book. Sarah’s life is not going quite as planned, especially when it comes to love. She seems to find herself on bad date after bad date. Thank goodness for her good friend Lottie and the local theater Group. Nate is a well-known actor but with fame comes infamy. When his jilted lover confronts him during a theater performance it is big news, especially because Nate is married. But things aren’t always as they seem his wife has had many indiscretions of her own and the couple was planning on announcing their separation, the problem is nobody knows that side of the story. Sarah and Nate’s paths cross when Nate fleas to the small village of Greenley to wait out the scandal. What follows is not quite what you’re thinking. There is no Insta love between these two. These are too complex people with complicated lives who have lots of things to figure out. The romance in the story is subtle, slow, and secondary to the story. This really is more of a story about quirky characters, a theater performance, and a sprinkling of love.

Sarah was a likable character and I instantly sympathize with her. Especially after her disastrous date at the Chinese food restaurant! SOS indeed! I also really liked Nate from the beginning. I really would not want to be famous in this day and social media age. I mean I wouldn’t mind the money in the perks but I wouldn’t want everyone all up in my business all the time. All the secondary characters were wonderful as well. Loved Lottie and Sid and time permitting I’d love to go back and read the first book about them. Mrs. Anderson was great for some laughs as were many other of the theater members. A fun well told story perfect for poolside or fireside.

*** many thanks to HQ Digital for my copy of this book ***

This is a lovely story, it is well written and I loved the plot!

This is the perfect book to read at this time of the year to escape from the day to day mundane tasks, and rubbish weather as we have where I live today!

I love the setting for this series and the author does a brilliant job of bringing it to life for me, I loved being able to catch up with the fantastic characters too. It as well written and I really enjoyed the flow that the author has with the story, it is a very easy story to read.

This is the second book in this series and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The first book was also a lovely read so I would recommend reading that first so you get to know the back stories of the characters as I think that will make this book even more enjoyable.

It is five stars from me for this one, a delightful read and I am already looking forward to her next release!! Very highly recommended!!

Was brilliant to go back to the wonderful seaside village of Greenley on sea and hear how things are going on. It's full of heartbreak, romance and you will laugh and cry and just a perfect summer read.
Sarah has had plenty of heartbreak in her life but she's busy in the Greenley players and they are doing a play. She's lost her mum and her dad she just can't forgive as he did things years ago that led him to bring in prison and when he turns up how will she react will she learn to trust him and be happy with having her dad back or is that just to much. She also wonders if she will find love again and at work she gets friendly with dr Finn and she does go out with him but can she trust him or are her thoughts getting the better of her. Then you have Nate who is a professional actor but is hiding away in the village after his wife and him split up but he's been caught with a lover but his marriage was over any way but he's hiding away and he sees sarah and can see himself falling for her will she see him and fall for him or will she prefer dr Finn.
A great read and worth more than five stars as brilliant.

This has a wonderful cast of characters who are all involved with the summer production of The Tempest. You can just imagine all the egos rubbing along or not, throughout the story! They are so well drawn that you can imagine sitting amongst them- maybe helping out with the prompts in the middle of the play. It's a lovely setting for a book and a theatre on the seafront sounds so enticing.

Sarah is looking for love- but has had some disastrous dates. She's also nursing a troubled heart. There are some love interests in the book- who is going to be Mr Right?!

I loved the character in hiding - and the way he was looking to escape the confines of the house he was staying in, without upsetting his hosts.

I will read more in this series.

Summer Season on the Seafront, Katie Ginger

Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews

Genre: Romance, Women's Fiction

Ah no....usual moan :-( Why, why do we have women's fiction as a category? Why assume men won't/don't read romance – they do, they write it and read it.

With that off my chest, on to the book. I hadn't realised there was an earlier book, I think if you read that first the relationships in this one will be clearer, but if like me you haven't it doesn't matter, its still a very easy to follow story.

I really didn't like Nate when we first met him but as we learned more of his backstory I understood his actions more and loved him. Sarah of course, is attracted but the media are full of salacious stories and poor Nate is in a situation where he cant defend himself from the, I really hate that situation, and its one repeated time and again in British media who seem to want the story at any cost, and aren't too worried about the truth. Caught out they'll print some tiny retraction tucked behind other stories. They just want the name, the headline and the sales.
Sarah is lovely, been through a tough time but is gaining her confidence and then her past comes along to throw a spanner in the works. She's attracted top Nate – who isn't? She's also had a long time crush on colleague Finn though, and he seems to reciprocate her feelings. I loved Lottie and Sid, and of course Gregory and Cecil, and could imagine the story unfolding ss if it was really happening.
The romance here is very understated, a secondary story almost, with the main plots being about the characters, their friendships and of course the Theatre and the play they are doing. With it being classed as a romance read I did expect that part to be stronger, but I guess that's down to my expectations, not the book. I was just a bit disappointed to not get more romance in the story. The main cast of characters show just how a disparate group can form close friendships, can work together even if there is friction at times.

Stars: Four, an enjoyable holiday type read. One to relax with and just imagine you're there with the cast.

As my favourite genre to read are romantic stories, it sometimes happens that you have had enough of it all. Some stories are so alike, that you just can’t bother to read more.

But reading this story was like taking a breath of fresh air. But I have to admit, the first chapter was a eenie meenie difficult for me. That first chapter just didn’t appeal to me. But I have never been so happy to just keep reading.

This isn’t the typical romantic story where an actor falls in love with the local girl and after a few minor struggles they get their happily ever after.
You read it from 2 different point of views. To me, it felt like reading 2 stories at the same time.
Sarah, the local girl, is facing a lot of personal issues. So is her father being released from prison, is Sarah having problems with the character she needs to play in the local theatre and then there is Finn, the doctor she has been drooling over a year now...

And then there is Nate, the actor...
He’s facing a divorce after been cheated on several times, had a one night stand but the woman went to the papers.
So he has the need to flee.
And where does he go? Right, in the small town where Sarah lives.

There are no instant sparks, they just meet randomly and that’s what so refreshing. And when they meet, there is no instant falling in love. And even when deeper feelings are rising, they are both trying to fight it, sensing it’s not the right time.

Katie Ginger wrote an amazing story about facing your own demons and by sheer coincidence also a love story takes place.
The love takes a supporting role during the whole book, until the last few chapters.
Once you are in the story, you just keep on going. I had a few laughs during the story, some cheering moments, but also sad frowns.
The difficulties both characters were facing, were heart breaking and also recognizable on some level.
You just want both of them to be happy and find a way to solve all their problems and starting to live their lives full of happiness and love!

I loved coming back to the Theatre and the Am Dram players. It didn't take me long at all to remember the characters and their quirky ways. This time Sarah takes the main stage, with supporting roles by Gregory and Cecil, although other cast members do also have parts to play.

I immediately took to Sarah and found myself sympathising with her as she forlornly fails to find a decent match on the dating sites. A surprise lands on her doorstep and it leaves her having to re-assess what she originally thought. I loved this surprise for Sarah and though the author handled the reactions very well. Oh my goodness that was so cryptic!

Nate, the actor fleeing London under a shadow is a great character. Yes, I will admit that initially, I felt he was little stereotyped, but after I got to know him I was pleasantly surprised. Just goes to show how wrong you can be about people, which is perfect for him!

This is such an adorable read and I was so happy to reconnect with the wonderful and slightly mad-cap characters. Mrs Andrews... though I think she would scare the socks off me, also had me giggling. Gregory and Ceil are simply perfect in both their character, outlook and cheeky little asides and are such a wonderful compliment. Sarah and Nate are the main focus and I loved their individual stories. Friendships, relationships, and dealing with emotions are wonderfully wrapped up and around a story that I adored.

In picking out and highlighting just a few characters it meant the flow of the story did just that "it flowed" beautifully. I was happily turning pages from start to finish and I cannot wait to see what comes next in this series.

If you are after a wonderful story, in fact, a series then have a look at this one. Wonderful storylines, brilliant characters that had me smirking, laughing, and also wiping the odd stray tear. Summer Season on the Seafront gets a Highly Recommended from Me!

This book was a perfect summer read! My first book by this author, and you know it’s going to be a good book when it had me laughing by the end of the first chapter. With the story focussing on Sarah and her love life (or lack of it), the book opens with Sarah and Dean’s blind date at the local Chinese buffet restaurant. Apart from making me very hungry, Sarah’s predicament made me realise how lucky I am to be well out of the dating game! By the end of Sarah’s date, I was well and truly hooked and even though it seemed to be part of a series, I didn’t feel like I was missing out on anything!

This book also brought back the actors and actresses of the local amateur dramatic group of the small village where Sarah lives and of which Sarah has joined to keep herself busy. Here we, and Sarah, meet Nate, an actor who is leaving London somewhat under a cloud. I didn’t initially like Nate’s character but as the story moves on, you begin to understand more of his character and he becomes much more likeable. It’s obvious that Sarah and Nate will become romantically involved, but it’s not your typical romantic read as it doesn’t just focus on their relationship as a couple but also on their relationship within the theatre. The story revolving around the theatre group and their next production is just as captivating as Sarah’s love-life, and I found myself really getting involved in this part of the story!

This was a completely different book to what I was expecting, and I really enjoyed it! The storyline was great, the characters were all so likeable and easily relatable and it had both funny and tender moments within in. I would definitely recommend, and I’m now off to read the first book, The Little Theatre on the Seafront to complete the story!

My Thoughts: First off, the cover is so bright and lovely! It definitely drew me into checking out what this book was about, and boy what I glad. this book is such a cute book, from disastrous dates to getting locked out of the house.

Sarah is playing in the production The Tempest, along side her best friend Lottie. She is really hoping to start fresh and possibly find love, after many bad first dates and heartbreak, is Nate the guy for her? or is Finn her boss she’s been secretly crushing for the last year the one?

Nate is a famous actor and after a one night stand comes back to ruin his career, he is forced to hide away in Greenley until it blows over. Once the group of Greenley production group gets a wind he is here, they ask for his help with their production. He’s supposed to be laying low and not get spotted, what he wasn’t planning was to feel such an instant spark with the lead role Sarah.

I really enjoyed reading this book, so many times I caught myself laughing. There is also more depth to this book, dealing with a return of a parent who is not as welcomed as they thought. I really enjoyed seeing the two’s relationship grow, dealing with their own troubles but yet finding there way to each other.

This was my first book with a large amount of British slang, which I quite enjoyed seeing different ways things are said vs how we say them here in Canada. It also definitely made me enjoy a cup or two of tea.

Although this book is part of a series it works beautifully as a stand alone and after reading this one, the first part, The Little Theatre on the Seafront has been bumped up on my TBR list.

The first things that catches your eye is the incredibly cute cover which just lures you in. The opening pages are hilarious and begin with poor Sarah on a blind date with an unappetising meal and an even more unappetising man. From this point I was hooked and couldn’t resit racing through Sarah”s story to find out if she would meet the man of her dreams…. as if I’m going to give the game away.

Set around a theatre group, which I loved as I have recently joined one and I have made some lovely new friends there, each character in this novel brings an abundance of personally and quirkiness to the novel making them more than just background characters.

The main protagonist Sarah and her friend Lottie are simply delightful and mischievous together but when Sarah’s absent father turns up, her character is given an added depth that takes her from just being a romantic interest. Nate Hardy is a refreshingly sensitive and loyal man and despite being famous and labelled as the nations ‘bad man’ he’s endearing and sweet. Add an ensemble cast of other players and it’s difficult not to become part of the Greenley Players and their antics.

This is such a lovely light read and is perfect for the summer.

As in its predecessor, it is the community which lights up this story. The Greenley Players are such a varied group of larger than life characters and it is lovely to catch up with them again. Summer is in full swing and the town seems to shine in the sun. Lottie and Sid are still together but it is their friend, Sarah, who takes centre stage. You see her gaining in confidence as the story unfolds and she has an interesting relationship with her father which has to be worked through.

Perfect for a summer read, you feel yourself relax into the story. There are some moments of humour to go with the romance which is brewing throughout. Family and friendships are central and this gives the book a feelgood flavour. I found both Sarah and Nate to be likeable characters who carrried the story well. I'm hoping we get to see what the Christmas production is going to be. There is plenty of scope there for the Players, I am sure.

In short: As warm as a sunny summer's day, this is a heartwarming read.
Thanks to the author for a copy of the book.

I enjoyed this book immensely. Sarah has had rotten luck with boyfriends. She yearns for Finn, the doctor she works for, to notice her. And she loves performing with the Greenley Players, where she's playing the lead in The Tempest. She's having a hard time getting into the character. There is a lot more to Sarah than meets the eye. She is estranged from her dad. He was in prison when her dear mother died, and she can't forgive him for that.

Nate, an actor who is in hiding, ends up in Greenley-on-Sea. He agrees to help the cast with their production to take his mind off his worries. He works one-on-one with Sarah to help her understand the character, as well as figure out why she's struggling with it.

Will Finn finally make a move on Sarah, or will Sarah begin to have feelings for Nate?

I won't go into a lot of detail, but this was a charming book. I must thank NetGalley and the Publisher for a copy of the book in return for an honest review.

💕Second Act

💕 Katie Ginger has done it again!
This story follows on from 'The Little Theatre on the Seafront' and continues the life of Lottie and Sid, who remain firm favourites of mine. However, this story focuses mostly on lovely, shy Sarah, whom we met in the previous book. Through her friendship with Lottie, Sarah is gaining self-worth and becoming more confident. (Something I'm sure we all would like to achieve).
Each character has been brought to life with Katie's clever writing, especially Gregory and Cecil, whose quirky ways I can't help loving. The setting for the story is beautifully described, I can almost picture myself on that spot on the beach or sitting sipping wine in the garden. 'Summer Season on the Seafront' is a fabulous, feel-good summer read.

Summer Season on the Seafront is the second book in the Seafront series by Katie Ginger and the first one I have read! It is a rom-com and while I tend to shy away from them, mainly because of the cheesiness of them, I had none of those issues with this book, even when Sarah played crazy! I completely enjoyed the author's take on the crazy world of online dating! The whole scene in the Chinese buffet is hysterical!

Overall the book was very enjoyable, well written and made me laugh my fool head off and had me missing all the summer shows I used to watch at The Cliffs Pavillion with my Mum and sister before I moved to America!

I give Summer Season at the Seafront 4 stars

Summer Season on the Seafront is the second book in the series, but could be read as a standalone novel. I have read and enjoyed the first book in the series - The Little Theatre on the Seafront which I also really enjoyed and would recommend.

A story about friendships, theatre productions and a little romance too. A cast of well rounded, likeable characters which I enjoyed and could relate to. I loved being back in Greenley-on-Sea - a perfect seaside location.

A perfect easy light hearted beach read or for a sunny afternoon in the garden.

I originally picked this book because of the cover! not something I usually do but it caught my attention and called out to me. I'm glad I did get it made for an enjoyable read. Sarah has rotten luck with dating sites and can't seem to catch a break she helps to occupy her time in the small village she live in by doing theater work. Along Comes Nate a sort of married actor that is hiding out from the media until scandal passes their interactions in this story are heartwarming and humorous . passed quickly well worth reading.

A Perfect Summer Read

This is the perfect chick flick in book form. It has the happy ending, some chaos, some twists, but not too many turns, and so much love. Being a Theatre person myself, the theatrical parts just add to the charm of this boom! I loved the first one in the series and so I was excited to read this one. It did not disappoint! I was even happier to see that it focused on a different pair of characters than the first one. If you're looking for a fun, feel-good read, look no further!

Although this was a little slow to start, once it got going it was an absorbing read. With two parallel plots, plus the play, there was lots going on. As the characterisation was a little caricature in places, it was easy to keep track of who was who.
Slapstick in parts, this book had me chuckling at the idiotic behaviour and funny tactics (mostly to avoid the press intrusion ... )

An enjoyable read 3.5*

I loved this book. Speaking as a member of our local amateur dramatic society, Katie Ginger has got this book spot on. If you add in a dishy doctor and a TV star on the run with some over the top characters this book is engaging from the start. The seaside setting is so realistic I think I want to live there. An easy to read book that is just perfect for a little bit of summer indulgence.

I first knew about Katie Ginger through her book The Secrets of Meadow Farmhouse. I really liked the story. It was 5 stars through and through. So how could I resist giving another of her book a go?

While the concept of this book is fascinating (who doesn't like a group of people who takes part in community plays just for the fun of it?), the execution and plot bring down the overall story. From the very beginning, introducing our two MCs, Sarah and Nate, already includes a whole load of info-dump. To make things worse, there are overlaps amidst this info-dumping. It's really not a good start; it's weak, and the experience was not enjoyable. I thought things would only get better from here, but... no.

There are more words describing how Sarah and Nate loved each other more than their actions. Oh, Nate could feel an attraction towards her; oh, how handsome Nate looks to Sarah; that sizzle where they touched... the build-up was not perceptible, making this romance dreary. I was not at all convinced that they loved each other, even if they did confess their love for one another at the end. More than half the time, we read about Sarah pining for Finn. That revelation that she actually felt something for Nate near the end was unnatural.

I stand by what I said about the concept being really interesting though. I learnt a lot about all the work required to ensure that a play went smoothly; the dynamics and the roles of different people; the amount of time. I felt tired for them, but also excited. I used to be in drama, so I could empathise with them. Ginger managed to write these parts really well. I also liked all the other characters who are part of the Greenley Players. On top of this, Sarah and Nate have their own set of problems, which brings me to my next point: this book covers a lot of topics. From grief, to lost love, to friendship and trust. And most importantly, how we cannot always trust gossips. Just because there are a lot of rumours behind a scandal doesn't mean that these rumours that have gotten around are a hundred-percent true.

With all this said, there is a very low probability that I will be picking up any of her books again. It's saddening, but it is what it is.

Thank you to Netgalley for a pre publication copy of The little Bookshop at Herring Cove. In exchange for an honest review.

Sarah lives in Greenley-On-Sea, where she was born and bred, a beautiful seaside town. Sarah's family life has not always been plan sailing. Sarah's father was an accountant however soon wished to increase his funds to treat Sarah and her mother. This led Ben to steal from his firm which led to a 7 year imprisonment and many rumours which were started near this time. Shortly after Ben's imprisonment Sarah's mother was diagnosed with terminal stomach cancer and died relatively soon leaving Sarah alone in Greenley-On-Sea. Sarah is a doctors receptionist and is swooning over Dr Macdonald. This forces Sarah to plough herself into the am dram group which was newly established in a Victorian theatre on the sea front. Here Sarah makes many friends; Lottie and Sid who both work for the local newspaper and have recently begun a romantic relationship, Gregory and Cecil who own the local BB as well as a bookshop and are so romantically in love they share their life together in every way. Amongst a few other newbies to the groups; Conner is hoping to expand his experience in drama for his degree, Mrs Andrews (Money-bags) is the local MP's wife and Debbie is the resident Scot who keeps everyone on their toes. However Sarah is missing some romance in her life. Nate Hardy is a famous actor who ends up landing in Greenley-On-Sea. Is it Nate Hardy of Dr MacDonald who is due to take Sarah's heart.

Firstly the cover is bright and warm and this directly drew me into the book.

Some research into this author has told me that this is her second book and actually there is a book before this one in the series. You would not know this when reading and this book makes a great stand alone book as well. Something I think this author has got down to a fine art.

The book is not your typical romance story where it is sometimes known from the start who the main character will fall in love with. This book gives you two options the whole way through and you feel yourself being torn between who you want Sarah to fall in love with. This keeps you hooked and wanting to read more to find out.

The characters are well rounded and you feel that you know every single one really well when the book finishes. The author brings you into their lives and allows you a beautiful view of their quirks as well as how each one is unique and has a story to tell.

The only downside to this book is that there is a lot of plain writing in the middle regarding Nate Hardy. When reading this book I felt that it was quite repetitive in the middle and we kept going around and around in circles regarding the Nate Hardy story. There was only minimal new information given in the middle of the book. New information was given in 1 sentence and then the rest of the chapter was about what we had already read in the chapter before. This does detract from the flow of the book and make it a bit of a slow read in the middle. However once you have got over this you find things are beginning to play out in front of you and you begin to get back into a page turner.

It was ok. It took a while to get into it but when I finally did it was a fast read. I didn't buy that they fell in love though. A few glances, a brush of hands and one kiss does not love make. Lottie and Sid's story was an overall better read.
