Favorite Sherlock Holmes Detective Stories

Rate this book
Throughout the annals of literature there is one detective who reigns supreme - Mr. Sherlock Holmes of 212 Baker Street, London. From that celebrated address, Holmes and his friend Dr. Watson set out to solve the most difficult cases and bring to justice the master criminals of Victorian England.

Now readers can enjoy the crime-solving exploits of the storied duo in this selection of favorite adventures. "The Adventures of the Dancing Men" concerns the appearance of mysterious stick-figure drawings which prove disastrous to a country squire and his bride; "The Red-Headed League" pits Holmes against a clever bank robber, while "A Scandal in Bohemia" finds the detective locked in cerebral combat with "that woman" Irene Adler, the only female who ever outwitted him (and the only one to steal his heart). In "The Final Problem," Holmes confronts the evil Professor Moriarty, "the Napoleon of Crime," for the last time atop Rechenbach Falls. Also included here are four other classic tales: "Silver Blaze," "The Adventure of the Speckled Band," "The Engineer's Thumb," and "The Crooked Man."

A great way to introduce younger readers to the world's best-known fictional detective, this affordable collection will entertain mystery lovers of all ages.

Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was a Scottish writer and physician. He created the character Sherlock Holmes in 1887 for A Study in Scarlet, the first of four novels and fifty-six short stories about Holmes and Dr. Watson. The Sherlock Holmes stories are milestones in the field of crime fiction.

Doyle was a prolific writer. In addition to the Holmes stories, his works include fantasy and science fiction stories about Professor Challenger, and humorous stories about the Napoleonic soldier Brigadier Gerard, as well as plays, romances, poetry, non-fiction, and historical novels. One of Doyle's early short stories, "J. Habakuk Jephson's Statement" (1884), helped to popularise the mystery of the brigantine Mary Celeste, found drifting at sea with no crew member aboard.

My favorite story was the speckled band story. Don't read that one at night. My friend read it at night and she said: "why did I do that?" Lol. Very good and I liked Sherlock more than I thought I would. He had a sense of humor in him.

Recommended ages 14 & up.

I have been reading these with my son at night between other books. It is always good to return to Baker Street and get a whiff of Holmes' thinking.

This was an excellent collection of Sherlock stories. So many interesting tales, including one of my personal favorites, "The Speckled Band." However, what really stole the show for our "telephone book club" was "The Final Problem." I had read this story before, but reading it aloud made me realize just how emotional it really is.

All in all, another great book to get under our belts.

Cool. I still can't believe how so many books (and movies) feature these two stuffy old guys, when really in the books they totally weren't. Had I known that, I would have read these long ago. Weird maybe, but true. BBC or whoever has put on all these old guy shows have really done the whole Sherlock Holmes thing a disservices.

I picked this up to read A Scandal in Bohemia before reading Goodnight Mr. Holmes by Carole Nelson Douglas. I was sure I must have read it before, but couldn't recall the story. It's pretty short and thin, leaving lots of room for CND to embellish the story.

Not exactly the most complex characterizations of Holmes, but they are some of the more unique and interesting stories.
