A Walk Through Nature is a children’s non-fiction book featuring thirteen poems all about different items within nature. Each poem is only around three verses long and features a corresponding full-page illustration on the opposite side.

Alongside the poems and the pictures, the right-hand side page opens out again to reveal factual information about the item/animal that is the subject of the poem as well as a few cut-out sections for children to peep through.

The book is large in size, around picture book size and the illustrations are eye-catching and beautiful. The poems are adorable too though I think older children will appreciate them more than picture book readers.

A Walk Through Nature is a charming read and one that nature lovers will enjoy. It would also make for a fabulous book to have in school for class projects on the natural world/environment.

A Walk Through Nature by Libby Walden. NON-FICTION PICTURE BOOK. 360 Degrees (Tiger Tales), 2019. $20.

BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3), EL – ADVISABLE

AUDIENCE APPEAL: HIGH

The twelve poems in this book describe ways our natural world transforms over a day, month, or year. Habitats include a meadow, pond, mountain stream, tree, beach and underground; transformations include plants growing, day turning to night, leaves changing color, birds migrating, eggs hatching, tadpoles growing legs, and tides ebbing. Each poem starts with two four-line stanzas on the left side, with a full-page illustration on the right. The illustrated nature scene is printed on a page that has been folded in and die-cut. When you fold out the page, you find a related scene underneath that nature has transformed, as described in the poem. On the back side of the fold is the final stanza of the poem, plus additional nonfiction information about the featured transformation.

I must say that every time I look through this book, it fills me with warmth and wonder. How amazing is our natural world, and what joy our young readers will have studying these transformations both through the rhyming words, and with the peek-through illustrations. The final endpapers include an array of objects that readers can go back and try to find in the book. I rate the buying advisory as advisable because it connects strongly with elementary science curriculum, and the audience appeal as high because of the die-cuts.

A beautiful set of poems about different aspects of nature. With peek through pictures for children to enjoy. When the flap pages are opened up there is another image continuing from where the first left off, and some factual information about some of the images shown in the picture.

It would be a great book for teachers to use for topics, but otherwise a charming book to share.

Lovely book, very well executed. Actually has quite a bit of information in it to start a knowledge of nature, it's not just pretty pictures (although they are very pretty pictures). My 7 year old got a lot out of it.

This one was a 3.5 for me. I was charmed by its contents and impressed with the luscious artwork. Readers will feel encouraged to go for their own walk through nature after reading this book. Not only does it contain simple but meaningful poems about flora and fauna, but there are fold-out pages that provide information about various elements found in the great outdoors, including flowers, eggs, beetles, and animal dens. The use of die-cuts allows readers to guess what will be found on the page below the cutouts, which adds to the book's appeal. Readers will realize that the natural world changes over the seasons, and this book does a fine job of celebrating those wonders to be found outside our front doors if we simply choose to venture forth. Overall, it provides a solid introduction to how nature changes during each of the seasons and prompts reflections on those changes. I don't see how anyone could read this book and not feel compelled to go outside for a breath of air and a glimpse of what's happening right beneath their noses.

Bit of a tough match-up at play between somewhat juvenile illustrations and a GREAT deal of text per page. Poems are fine; scientific details on the flap of each spread elevate the story.
