Seaside Knitters Society #3

A Murderous Tangle

Rate this book
Birdie, Nell, Cass, and Izzy are prepping their coziest handiwork for a holiday gathering in Sea Harbor, Massachusetts. But as murder makes waves in their tightly knit coastal village, can the Seaside Knitters prevent a deadly trend from catching on?

While the Seaside Knitters get ready to showcase their new Danish-inspired event, locals can't stop talking about Tess Bean--a bright-eyed environmental activist with a way of charming both animals and humans alike. Birdie's granddaughter is mesmerized by ethereal Tess's passion for saving the earth and ocean, and even Izzy's old Irish setter becomes attached to the young woman's gentle touch . . .

Except not everyone is a fan of Tess and her strong opinions, especially after she starts questioning the "clean" practices of small-business owners. So when a popular bar owner whom Tess publicly calls out for bad practices is found dead from a fall off his club's deck, it's not long before she tops the suspect list for murder . . .

In addition to a murderer walking their streets, the knitters are also grappling with an unusual wave of thefts up and down Harbor Road. Now, as Birdie's granddaughter struggles to protect her mentor's reputation, the Seaside Knitters must solve a dangerous mystery that not only threatens to unravel the fabric of their community and the approaching holiday, but also the lives of those they care about the most . . .

It's okay. I like the townsfolk and knitters hangouts, but Murderous Tangle was lacking in mystery department. There are many characters in this series and it's difficult to follow on audio.

I don't know how she does it, but this author always manages to come up with just the perfect knitting situations to create the perfect cozy atmosphere in this series. I've really grown to love all these main characters, and yes, even though there are a lot of them, I don't get confused. I wasn't sure what to think about their new friend Tess at first, but she eventually fit in with the group.

I eventually guessed who the killer was, and that's another thing I've liked about this series in what I've read. Maybe it's what makes it so peaceful and leaves me thinking about the characters, but it's a nice break sometimes not to have a main character have a dangerous standoff with the killer. Sometimes the killer is even one of their own and not normally a bad person. I absolutely loved the last scene in the book! It was the perfect cozy Christmas!

I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher and NetGalley. My opinions are my own.

Mysteriously odd thefts, murder and intrigue are all central themes in this installment of the Seaside Knitters series. If you haven't read any of the series, I would highly recommend starting at the beginning to get the full enjoyment of the series and to get to know the characters so well that they will feel like old friends. However, it isn't absolutely necessary to enjoy this book as it is well written and stands on it's own very well, but you would be missing out on a lot of enjoyable stories! This book addresses some very sad everyday issues in an interesting and heartwarming manner while also wrapping an intriguing murder plot into the story. You will enjoy the book while ending with a sense of anticipation for the next book to come out or at least I did! I can't wait to see what happens in the lives of these friends in the next book!

Sally Goldenbaum delivers another delightful story of friendship, loyalty, humor with A Murderous Tangle. Sally Goldenbaum supplies a complete roster of the characters in her novel, which I find wonderful. The Seaside Knitters of Massachusetts provide warmth, love, and friendship in this tight knit community where the town presents many events to strengthen a sense of belonging. Sometimes I feel that the murder stands behind the actual emotional ties of the town. The novel does not dip into a graphic description of the murder and at times seems like a Joanne Fluke mystery. Both writers provide a recipe at the end of the novel, but Sally Goldenbaum also gives a knitting pattern and portrays characters and setting better than Fluke.

Sally Goldenbaum continues to amaze me with her ingenious stories of friends and friendships that are so real it's hard to remember they are fictional characters.
This book introduces a new resident that may or may not have a mysterious past that Ms. Goldenbaum keeps you guessing about from the start.
Gabby is back and running circles around The Seaside Knitters Society, as usual. Little Abby also gets her two cents in as well.
I love how the entire town pitches in to "take care of their own". They, as always, go out of their way to help each other and to comfort their ills.
I love the ending. That's all I'll say about it....absolutely loved it!!

A Murderous Tangle is filled with secrets and lies, creating a web of deceit that leaves Izzy, Nell, Cass and Birdie trying to untangle the mess.
Birdie's granddaughter Gabby is talking nonstop about her new teacher, Tess Bean. It seems Miss Bean has a way with young people and her save the earth beliefs are creating waves.
Not everyone is open to making the changes necessary to lead an eco friendly world, and when Tess is seen arguing with someone who becomes a murder victim, it's up to the group of friends to discover the answers.
I absolutely loved this book and was drawn in from the beginning.
I highly recommend this book and this series.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Climate change is real and environmental activist Tess Bean hopes to get the folks of Seaside Harbor to get on board with her ideas. Birdie’s granddaughter, Gabby is all-in on the efforts but Harbor Club owner Bobby Abbott is not a fan of Tess or her efforts. When Bobby is found dead on the beach below the bar’s deck Tess becomes suspect numero uno. Birdie, Nell, Cass, and Izzy learn their friend Gracie, owner of Easy Lobster and Soup Café is also on the suspect list.

The Seaside Knitters are also planning a Holiday event giving them time to gather and ponder other suspects as they try to get a murderer behind bars before the Christmas Bells ring. The knitters are also concerned about some thefts the local shop owners are dealing with. They don’t think the thefts are connected to the murder, but you never know, they could be.

___

The Seaside Knitters, their spouses, children, and friends gather together regularly for food and fellowship, but sometimes their dinners are focused on the latest local murder. In this small town, where everyone knows everyone, it is hard not to get involved. Let’s face it, they do have an excellent track record. With Gabby so involved with Tess and Gracie a suspect, they have no choice but to do some investigating of their own.

I have enjoyed this series from the beginning. The cast of characters is large but the author gives new readers a list at the beginning of the book to assist them in getting to know how everyone fits together. I love these characters and frankly, I would read their stories even if there wasn’t a murder mystery included. They have become old friends. I can easily picture myself pulling up a chair and knitting right along with them, discussing all the events of the day around town and in their home lives. I would also love to be invited to the Friday night dinners at Ben and Nell’s. This tight-knit group is what makes this series great.

Even though I said it was unnecessary, Ms. Goldenbaum always writes an intriguing mystery and I love that she focuses on a hot topic in the world today. Tess is passionate about her cause but would she kill someone? Would Gracie? There are plenty of clues, twists, and turns to untangle. The group works together to ferret out the answers needed and it is fun to follow them each and every step of the way. I have come to believe that following complex knitting patterns gives these women the brainpower and the temperament needed to solve these mysteries. I didn’t even come close.

Even in the winter Sea Harbor sounds like a wonderful place. There is always something happening. Heck, picking up garbage on the beach even sounds like fun as long as there are no dead bodies 😀

One little thing that really tugged on my heart is that Izzy is dealing with an elderly dog. I have two border collies that are 16 years young but are dealing with the aches and pains of aging too. Izzy meets Tess when she takes her dog to the vet. Tess basically takes over the visit meeting Izzy at her car, carries the dog in, sets the dog down and immediately starts massaging the dog in an amazing and soothing way. You could tell the dog enjoyed the treatment and felt better after. Most humans love their aching muscles massaged so why wouldn’t dogs.

This is another spectacular book from Sally Goldenbaum. The author’s descriptive writing style draws the reader in for a story that unfolds at a comfortable pace. A Murderous Tangle is a mystery filled with cozy characters in a charming small town that will have you a little sad when it ends and anxious for your next visit.

Let me start by saying I love this series and look forward to a new book. But this one had so many typographical errors and editing issues that it totally detracted from the story. I got this book from the library so it was not an advance copy. I cannot believe that so many sloppy mistakes got through a final edit - characters names being mixed up - last and first - so that it was hard to tell who the writer was talking about. Also sentences that were so poorly structured that even after reading several times, I had to give up without knowing what they were supposed to say. I'm sorely disappointed. If I were the author, I'd be embarrassed to have my name on this and would be looking for a new editor.

FYI: I won this book on goodreads.com.
Interesting title for a book that includes murder and knitting. Unfortunately, those are two things I know very little about. There were so many female characters with short names! I admit to the fact that I had a difficult time keeping them straight without looking back to their descriptions at the front of the book. That fact made the book much less enjoyable than it could have been. I never really got a hold of all those characters...

Book 14 in the series.

I love this series, but this one just didn't hold my interest. I found myself putting it down way more often than I usually do with books in this series. In the end, it was an okay book, and I, as always, look forward to more.

Another murder in Sea Harbor and the knitters get busy trying to find out who did it. Usually these cozies move along but this one seemed to take forever to solve the crime. The ending was a little unexpected and the recipe looks really good. I might even try the knit pattern but this story just seemed slow.

A MURDEROUS TANGLE is my first step into Ms. Goldenbaum’s world – and I will definitely be grabbing the two earlier titles that I missed to get caught up. There are a lot of characters in this story, yet I never felt lost and, in fact, soon became very comfortable with this small town, as well as its unique and at times quirky residents.

I loved the way this story played out at a comfortable pace, with some deep thinking, some emotions, and a lot of logical conclusions based on reality, not on the heat of the moment. There are red herrings and a few twists, turns and surprises – I expect that in a Cozy Mystery but I didn’t catch the bad guy until the reveal. Well, I don’t actually try to solve any mystery I’m more entertained by those twists and surprises along the journey. I love the friendships within this world, that is a huge part of what makes any story (for me) believable and relatable. In all, I had a really good time with A MURDEROUS TANGLE and would recommend this one to any reader who loves solving puzzles, small-town antics, real believable friendships and figuring out whodunit.

*I received an e-ARC of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley. That does not change what I think of this story. It is my choice to leave a review giving my personal opinion about this book.*

A new business has opened in Sea Harbor and the owner wants to close Gracie down and expand. When the man is found murdered, not only is Gracie a suspect, but so are many others, including Tess Bean, a newer resident and part time teacher at the school. But the ladies don’t believe Gracie or Tess are guilty and begin to put the pieces of the puzzle together.

As they go along they realize some members of their community aren’t who they thought they were, and others are struggling with issues of their own. But the community takes care of its own and there is a whole lot of love and care that the townsfolk have as they try to help in anyway they can. But will all the pieces come together for Izzy and the gang and will they uncover the evidence they need to take it to the police before the murderer strikes again.

A charming and quaint setting with a group of women that have come to feel like friends. Well developed characters and a solid story line with enough red herrings to keep you guessing who the murderer really is until the very end.

This is the fourteenth book in the seaside knitting series. Birdie and Nell are part of a knitting club. Tess Bean is an environmental activist and is trying to get people in town to like her ideas. Bobby Abbott who owns the Harbor Club is completely against Tess's ideas. When Bobby is found dead, Tess is an immediate suspect along with Birdie and Nell's friend Gracie. Birdie's granddaughter knows Tess is innocent so Birdie and Nell start investigating.

I thought the mystery was good. It had a hard time grabbing and keeping my attention though. I really wanted to like this book more than I did. I'm not sure if it was because I jumped into this series in the middle. I might try and go back and start from the beginning to see if that makes a difference.

I received this book from net galley in exchange for an honest review.

When a new bar opens next to Gracie's Lobster Shack, the owner is charming, but there are undercurrents of self absorption that make the knitting group uneasy. At the same time a new teacher appears at Gabby's school involving Gabby in saving the ocean from plastic and trash. Other new characters increase the tangles as someone is murdered.

Would give this book 4.5/5 stars. Was quite an enchanting read with a number of mysteries to solve the that will keep you guessing. I also greatly enjoyed the complex characters and layered interpersonal interactions/conflict. This book can definitely be read within the context of the series as a whole or as a stand alone. It was the first book I have read by this author and I was quite impressed

This was too heavy handed for my liking. I liked the mystery. It wasn't the focus of the story, though. The story involves the environment, theft, murder, family, dementia, food, and knitting. There a few surprises, and I liked the one with a Seaside Knitter.

A Murderous Tangle is the third book in the Seaside Knitters Mystery series.

This book introduces a new character Tess Bean. Tess in on the staff at the veterinary clinic and a part-time environmental science teacher. She has been able to get some of the students involved in cleaning up the shoreline and passing out literature to educate residents on how to save the environment.

When the body of the owner of the Harbor Club bar, Bobby Abbott, is found near his bar Izzy, Nell, Cass, and Birdie set their sight on finding who wanted Bobbie out of the picture. As they begin to think through possible suspects they find that some of their friends are quickly added to the list. Even Tess becomes a suspect as she was seen having a heated argument with Bobby.

Whether the Seaside Knitters are having a quiet supper at Nell’s or working on their knitting at Izzy’s store they will put all their effort into finding the killer.

The book is well-written and plotted with an interesting cast of characters. Once again the author writes a heart-warming story with people I would love to have as friends.
A knitting pattern and delicious recipes are also included in the book.

I am most interested in reading the next book in this delightful series.

I like these people. I like this seaside town. If it were a real place I’d love to spend time there. Spend time visiting the restaurants, the shops, sitting in on a knitting session, and if I were lucky getting invited to a Friday night dinner at Nell’s. This series is the coziest of the cozies. And yet not syrupy or cheesy.

Cute, but my God, cozy mysteries are not my thing. I read this book to fulfill a book challenge, but I won't be challenging myself with this genre again any time soon. This type of book is the Hallmark Channel of books. It was just so cheesy and contrived. Who in the world says "geesh!" all the time? Maybe it's a northern thing 😂 I know some people LOVE their Hallmark movies... it's just not for me 🤷🏻‍♀️

I enjoyed the read but have no desire to read further into the series. I felt there were way too many characters to help the story flow. It felt super choppy. The writing just didn't draw me in. I really struggled to get through the last 1/3b but was determined!

I just didn't connect to any of the characters unfortunately but definitely see how others enjoy the series! Just not my ball of yarn.

Birdie, Nell, Cassie, and Izzy are planning a holiday event for the approaching Christmas holiday, for all their family and friends. This is a small Massachusetts seaside town, and there's a sense that everybody knows everybody, though that's not always true.

Tess Bean is a fairly new arrival in town, working at two rather different part-time jobs. One of them is at the Seaside Harbor school, teaching science to the young students. She's lively and interesting, an environmental activist, and is very inspiring to many of them, including Birdie's granddaughter, Gabby. She also works for Clark Turner, the local veterinarian, in his kennel, where her gentle touch with the animals is valuable.

Not all the small business owners are pleased with her environmental activism, though, especially when she questions their own practices. Yet others are very receptive, and opinion is definitely divided on Tess.

There's another newcomer in town, Bobby Abbot, owner of the Harbor Club, a fancy new bar next to Gracie's Lazy Lobster restaurant. Gracie has gotten on board with Tess's environmental cleanup program, including a compost pit behind her restaurant. Bobby Abbot has not; he's totally opposed to it, and has clashed with Tess more than once.

What relatively few people know is that Bobby tried to buy the Lazy Lobster, to expand the Harbor Club, and Gracie refused. Bobby isn't accustomed to taking no for an answer, and has told her he'll drive her out of business instead.

When Bobby Abbot is found dead, pushed off a ledge into the harbor after the close of business one night, Tess and Gracie are the two most obvious suspects, but not by any means the only ones. An awful lot of people had reason to dislike Bobby Abbot.

With Gracie, one of their own, and Tess, rapidly becoming one of their own due to Gabby's pull with her grandmother, the Seaside Knitters have to find out who really did it. In the process they discover secrets of people they know and care about, and there's no way the answer isn't going to be disruptive, or even destructive, to some of those people.

This is the first of the Seaside Knitters books I've discovered, and despite being number 14 in the series, I found it pretty easy to slide into it, and I'd enjoy reading or listening to more. It's a good mystery, but it's also a well-done look at the friendships and relationships in Seaside Harbor.

Recommended.

I bought this audiobook.

This is the 3rd in this beloved series and I have loved the entire series. I love returning to vibrant picturesque Sea Harbor home of the Seaside Knitters club and all the wonderful charcters. The author has created a charming series that offers a well crafted sleuth and endearing charcters that we cozy readers adore. Thank you to the publisher and to Net Galley for the opportunity. My review opinion is my own.

In the 3rd in series Christmas is fast approaching and the Seaside Knitters are preparing their crafts for Xmas. Little do they know that they are soon going to be investigating another murder !
Birdie’s granddaughter, Gabby, witnesses a argument between her science teacher Tess Bean and Harbor Club owner Bobby Abbott. When Bobby is found murdered a few days later Birdie is concerned and with the help of her favorite knitters she begins to ask questions around the village among the many unique charcters that make up the seaside village community.. She soon finds out the victim had been trying to shut a favorite local business of hers down and had contentious relationships with several people in town he was pressuring to sell. Their beloved cafe owner friend Tess was seen pushing the victim in the ocean in a dispute over his polluting the ocean and she is soon suspected by the police. Birdie is sure she is innocent and dives into this investigation much to the chagrin of the local police. With the help of her friends and neighbors Birdie is soon to piece together the right clues for the local police and solve the case. A savvy smart protagonist she is likable to readers, realistic and friendly . As the mystery deepens many clues abound and Birdie knows she is so close to figuring out who committed murder and why.

This was such a fun read and a excellent well crafted mystery to a pleasing conclusion. I love the setting, the beloved long time charcters and the introduction of a few new characters that are likable and fit right into the mystery. I love the theme here of ocean pollution and the author did a outstanding job of highlighting the need to recycle and not pollute our beaches.

This is a winning cozy mystery series and this 3rd in series is a winner ! The perfect mystery, great charcters and a wonderful seaside setting that every cozy reader will love. I look forward to the next in series.

Spoiler alert. Plus some edits in the first set of comments. 1/17/20 Originally, when the synopsis said that a popular bar owner would be killed off, I was thinking it was going to be Jake. I'm not rating this yet since I haven't finished the book, but wanted to write down my thoughts as I went along. First of all, I missed that Willow isn't in this book. I would like to see Rose Chapra return in the future. Tess Bean is a fascinating character. It's good that Gabby and Daisy and the other kids have a positive role model. I'm a little disappointed in Lizzy and especially Cass. It's been noted in every book that Cass can't seem to pass up good food. But when Cass was eating the wings in the bar, it seemed her brain was turned off. Apparently, good food can excuse any rotten acts. Can't believe that Cass was appalled at the peeing in the compost bin when talking with Gracie and Lizzy after seeing Tess walk by in a cloud but thought it was ok earlier. As mentioned my disappointment when Lizzy and Cass let Tess walk by without reaching out to see if they could helpe. If it had been Willow or Rose (before they became friends), they wouldn't have hesitated, but it seems like they are subconsciously letting Birdie's feelings about Tess affect any compassion or friendly responses. Will see how the rest of the story plays out. Although murder shouldn't be condoned, Bobby, like Spencer Paxter, wouldn't be missed by me. 1/20/20 Lizzy and Cass restored my faith in them as the story progressed. Tess is a another character that I would like to see return in future books. When it was mentioned that Bobby changed his will and left the bar to someone, I thought it might be Tess but later wondered if it was Penny. When it was mentioned that Robert had a second child, I immediately thought of Tess. Even if Helen admired the man that she came to know, I felt he was a sorry excuse. Spoiling one child and totally ignoring the second. Sounded like he never provided any child support. Running off on a tangent. I've come to know of men like Robert too much workwise and it is a sore point. Liked how the story tied together and was surprised by the twist in the killer. Looking forward to more books by Sally Goldenbaum.

The Seaside Knitters, Birdie, Nell, Cass, and Izzy, love their town of Sea Harbor, Massachusetts. Their knitting group is hosting a Danish-inspired event for the holidays. The event is overshadowed by the death of club owner Bobby Abbot. At first, it seems he fell off the deck of his club, but evidence soon shows that his death was most likely murder.

Unlike other cozy mysteries that I’ve read, there isn’t one person who goes around hunting for clues. The ladies, Birdie, Nell, Cass, and Izzy, mostly get their information just by going about their daily lives. Less being nosy and more paying attention. They don’t get in the police’s way, and their partners are also included, ofter over a gathering with good food and drink. They work like a brain trust of sorts.

It makes it a bit challenging with all of the characters and with them all the side stories. A few chapters before the end, I felt like I was one of the knitters putting the pieces together. I figured out who but what I was stuck on was why. I went with something obvious based on what I thought were clues. Nevertheless, I was wrong about the motive.

I didn’t read the book before it and felt like I might have missed something around Birdie and Gabriela but not enough to stop reading. The knitters are warm and welcoming to others. They are also, a source of support and strength for each other.

Newcomer Tess is a “tree hugger” who becomes a strong influence on students who join her in educating the residents on ways they can help save the planet.

There’s a lot going on aside from the murder. A well-paced and intriguing read. I will look for the next one or maybe even go back and read one I missed.

Happy Reading!

This is a lovely hug of a book. Admittedly it has a murder at its centre but its heart is all about family, friendship and being there for people.

Birdie, Nell, Cass, and Izzy, are looking forward to the festivities of Christmas when a body is found near one of their favourite restaurants, owned by Gracie, another member of their small group of friends.

The murder is only one thread in this book although the others all, in some way, lead to or from it. The relationships between the main characters, their spouses and family members would be confusing, at least to begin with, if the very welcome cast list at the beginning was missing but there are no unnecessary characters included. The various storylines are, of necessity, similar because they all happen in the same location but also as varied as life in every small town is.

I love Sally Goldenbaum's storytelling and ability to paint pictures of confident, successful, family minded and/or career oriented women in small town environments. Done so successfully in her Crestwood Quilters series these qualities and the evolving friendships seem deeper, stronger and somehow more up to date this time around. As for the murder I didn't solve it before the reveal but it was satisfyingly fitting as the main reason for everything that happened without taking away from the comfy caring side of life shown with such aplomb.

I was able to read an advanced copy of this thanks to NetGalley and the publishers in exchange for an unbiased review and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys books set in small town environments especially with a positive message and a mystery to solve.
