Introduction:

Greetings, fellow beings of the cosmos. I am Kiba Snowpaw, an alpha male Ice Wolf from the icy realm of HowlStrom. Having lived for over 36 winters and being an avid gamer, I've ventured into the realm of audiobooks to quench my thirst for stories. Today, I shall share my thoughts on "Future Retold" by Daniel Pierce, narrated by Alexander Cendese.

Basic Plot Summary:

The tale unfolds in a post-apocalyptic world where Jack, with Aristine by his side, aims to unite his people using Eden Chain technology. However, the city of Kassos holds dark secrets, and a new threat, the Procurators, emerges, wielding the power of the past - nanobots. As war looms, Jack's determination to triumph is tested.

Analysis/Evaluation:

"Future Retold" is a blend of futuristic technology, warfare, and interpersonal relationships. The LitRPG elements are subtly integrated, making it a treat for gamers like me. However, the story sometimes leans heavily on adult themes, which might not be everyone's cup of tea.

Characters:

Jack, the protagonist, is a warrior with a heart. His decisions, though questionable at times, stem from his desire to protect and unite. Aristine, his companion, complements him well, but I yearned to see more depth in her character. The supporting cast adds flavor, but some could benefit from further development.

Structure:

The story flows at a steady pace, with action sequences interspersed with moments of introspection. The LitRPG elements are woven seamlessly, making it accessible even to those unfamiliar with the genre.

Impact:

The tale resonated with me, reminding me of the eternal battles we face in HowlStrom. The challenges of leadership, the weight of decisions, and the importance of unity are themes that transcend realms.

Hook and Thesis:

The allure of "Future Retold" lies in its blend of futuristic warfare and human emotions. It's a tale of survival, leadership, and the lengths one would go to protect their own.

Praise and Critique:

I commend the vivid world-building and the seamless integration of LitRPG elements. However, the overemphasis on adult themes sometimes overshadows the core plot. Jack's decisions, especially in warfare, could be better strategized, considering his background.

Comparison:

"Future Retold" reminds me of the tales of old in HowlStrom, where heroes rise against insurmountable odds. However, the futuristic setting and LitRPG elements give it a unique flavor.

Conclusion:

"Future Retold" is a captivating tale that will appeal to those who enjoy a blend of action, technology, and human emotions. While it has its flaws, it's a journey worth embarking on. As the icy winds of HowlStrom howl in approval, I look forward to more tales from Daniel Pierce.

May the frosty winds of HowlStrom guide you to your next adventure. Until then, stay frosty.

The book itself is okay and would've likely gotten four stars but there are two issues. First, the books are critically short and second and more importantly. Jack Bowman is a TERRIBLE commander and shouldn't be in charge of tactics, ever.

Beware, spoilers ahead. At one point a "massive" enemy army is heading towards the Free Oasis. Jack and his followers know this. They're even tracking them using the drones. They could take this army out, quite easily so. He decides not to, to try and save the life's of these raiders and try to recruit them.

He proceeds to completely underutilize the tech and weapons available to him. Allowing this army to attack the Free Oasis, is completely caught off guards by their infiltrators and pays a staggering amount of lives for his plan. Which sees the drones take them out by putting them to sleep, allowing them to spare most of the enemy.

During this fight, several of the named characters including Aristine survive SOLELY because of plot armor. He's so obsessed with trying to spare these people and attempt to recruit them. People he can't logically trust nor should he at any point in the near future. He bleeds his own forces white, risks complete annihilation and exposes several of his girls to danger they needn't be in while also cockily underestimating how much of a risk this army poses.

The number given at the start for Free Oasis population is about 2000. In this single fight, he manages to get 83 of his own combatants killed. That's almost 5% of his overall population and likely a HUGE part of his fighting forces. Nobody calls him out on it, everyone treats this as a victory.

The kicker? They also let the enemy combatants leave. Even though they still outnumber them quite badly. Then they are happy when some of them return to join them and immediately allow them to do so. Easiest to infiltrate group ever.

Jack is a terrible commander, the needless loss of life of his own troops is staggering and his priorities seem to be completely messed up when it comes to preserving life. It would be incredibly easy for spies or an entire fifth column to infiltrate his group and wreak havoc or take it over entirely and the way he's spending his own troops lives he should both quickly run out of them and have some serious moral issues before long.

A really great read

I love this series, its a hard gritty world building action novel in a post apocalyptic wastelands. I enjoy the characters, their struggle against nature and a still to be fully identified enemy. This author for me is a bit hit and miss as I am not a fan of some of his other series but this one is a really enjoyable read. This is a harem novel with sex scenes.

Okay

At this point in a series I kind of expect more in main characters. I think we could learn more about the dynamics between the women in Jack’s life and how his main group is getting along. Also with new characters being introduced I understand that scenes can be confusing but calling Daybe Rae multiple times is a little disheartening. I’ll still read the series but it needs a little work right now.

I enjoyed reading this book.

This book was fun to read and I look forward to reading the next book in this series. The author kept me engaged with the story and the pace was good. The author has continued to grow the complexity of the characters and the story. Overall this series is the authors best series.

I love this series

Daniel and the Oasis group are spreading out whilst discovering new resources and consolidating new groups. An unexpected dangerous new foe that also has access to old technology, including 'bots, is discovered which poses a serious impediment to progress. Please make the next book longer! I read it too quickly otherwise.

Another great addition to the series. Even more action and discoveries in this one. I am continually impressed by Pierce's ability to provide so much action and still keep it engaging. I'm definitely impressed and looking forward to the next book.

Great series

This is a great series. Awesome characters and story line. My only complaint is that the storyline progresses so smoothly the book is read too fast. What a great complaint to get.

Well written

This is a interesting story that has a lot of room for growth, I think it could be fleshed out a little more, but it's not boring
