A daring start to a promising series, A Voice That Thunders is an imaginative and entertaining tale full of magic, romance, gods and monsters.

The plot centres on the adventures of a brother and sister. Mirah, kidnapped after her village was destroyed and offered the chance to join a sect of lethal female fighters, training as a water mage and warrior. And her brother Gabe, who sets off to rescue her and who has a more or less secondary place in this part of the tale.

Their adventures take the readers on a great adventure full of danger and mighty magic, set in a world that's wonderfully vivid and fascinating. The characters are likeable and the pace very well maintained. All marks of a great read. And yet, I cannot say I found myself reluctant to set it down. It could be that, at 45, I am not the perfect audience for this series, but the twists and reveals were not quite that surprising and the romance didn't really sing to me.

Things seem to either be or happen a bit too conveniently at times, while certain scenes came off as a tad unrealistic at others. And that is something that usually draws me out of a tale. But then again, as I said before, it may be that I'm not the proper audience this book is meant for. And it could very well be that younger readers would have no such qualms.

All in all, A Voice That Thunders is an entertaining YA epic fantasy that will appeal to all those who love fast paced action, magic, friendship, adventure and young love. It doesn't end in a cliffhanger per se, but leaves you with a promise of much more to come.

This was an easy 5 star rating for me . This book is fantastic and this is definitely an author to keep an eye on . First off the characters are fleshed out great and as you are brought into their lives you find yourself cheering for them and hoping things work out the way you want them to . The story itself draws you in and doesn't let go and when you get to the end your looking for more and can't wait for the next book . The world is growing and believable and as it gets bigger so does the story . The magic is different and so far it's a great part of the story . So all of this wrapped together is simply a great story that I will want you that you will have a hard time putting down . Do yourself favor and take a chance on this book you will not be disappointed until you get to the last page and you have to wait for book 2 . So stop reading this go buy this book and then come back and leave a review and tell your friends .

Cully Mack doesn't guide us into a new world. She throws us into it. A world of monsters in the form of demons and chimeras from another dimension here to conquer the world we are sent to visit. A world in which the illusion of prosperity is the norm and death awaits those who dare to say no to the head demon, Shemyaza. Mirah, the protagonist, is captive to the illusion yet she knows exactly what Shemyaza is capable of being among the survivors of those who said no to him. The only disappointing factor is that the title does not refer to the protagonist at all. Instead, it refers to a character that might drive the series but doesn't drive this particular book. A fantastic read that I read a 4.5 out of 5 stars for minor errors found in a half dozen locations that distracted but a good enough start and a smooth enough read that I have already bought the second book. I am rating 4 stars here and 5 stars on Amazon. While most books this length would be better with a professional editor as an extra pair of eyes, this is one indie author who is definitely worth following.

A brother destined. A Sister claimed. A god who came between them.

This the first in a thrilling epic fantasy series following protagonist siblings, Gabe and Mirah. If you like new worlds, tense romance, conflict, gods and monsters and magic systems. Then you will most likely enjoy this book.

Sacrifice
Surrender
Survival
Which would you choose?

Life was simple. Place your inky hand on the rock shelter wall and transition into adulthood. You may not know your betrothed but they are with you, your clan is small. That was life until the god, Shemyaza, sent his sons to slaughter them all.
Of those who survived, Gabe is missing, and his sister Mirah is captured.

Shemyaza offers Mirah the mysteries of his heavenly kingdom. Through magic, Mirah gains secrets. As she attempts to hide her powers and the mystery behind her wielding, Shemyaza’s stepson offers to train her but can she trust him with her heart?

Shemyaza, united with four gods, a host of Giants, Wielders and Chimera, has one enemy, the destined Voice of Thunder.

Her old and new world collide and Mirah is torn. War is coming.

Whichever path she chooses Mirah knows the shadow is here, and only she can hear it whisper.

I wrote this book so it's not fair to give an unbiased opinion. I hope you enjoy it as much as my writing journey, full of twists and turns which I didn't even anticipate. I know one thing the characters didn't always play nice and often insisted on taking their own paths.

This was a fun read - the romance was pretty predictable, but sweet and fairly satisfying. The world-building, magic system, and descriptions are fantastic & all the characters definitely had personality. This book seems to have a fairly unique twist on the "Chosen One" in the fact that it's (so far) not the MC, though she is quite powerful.
The rest of the series looks pretty awesome as well :)

I finished reading this book just a few minutes ago, and I couldn't wait to post my review! So, Cully Mack, here you are!

A great beginning! Stories like this that I've read always have the capture as Prologue and the quest for finding the captured as the rest of the story. This reversal was a little unsettling at first, but I've really came to love it!! A very nice twist to the cliche!

I give five stars for this book. Let me list out why:

1. The narration is heavy where new characters are introduced. Not at all overdone.

2. Ammo's story was introduced at just the right point, when Mirah was out of commission for two days. Very well placed! I also loved how the story kept shifting from one character to another, even when they were all together. Gives perspective.

3. The show-don't-tell aspect had been done very well.

4. Lovely cliffhangers! Absolutely Page-turning!!!

5. I also loved how natural all the characters seemed – even when it didn’t seem apparent in the beginning, especially Nate and Meciel’s behaviours.

6. The descriptions were poetic and fantastic!

7. The villains are scary, but they were epic! I’ll never forget them, just like I’ll never forget Sauron and the White Witch!

8. I love the names of all the characters!! That's one of the best parts of any fantasy - as is for this one!

9. Also: memorable dialogues!

"A Voice That Thunders" was in fact just the kind of fantasy story I wanted to read for a long time. I mean, I could pick my copies of “The Hobbit”, “The Lord of the Rings”, and “The Chronicles of Narnia” any time, but in these days, one doesn’t find such high fantasy stories written by contemporary authors – they’ve always been mixed with contemporary issues. Which is not a bad thing; it just gets cliched at a point.

I liked how, despite the darkness, there are still some elements of humour maintained, which balanced out the story.

My only issue was there could've been more punctuation – as a reader, I find it more appealing that way. Also, there were a few grammar errors. But they don’t lower my rating in any way whatsoever, because the plot and the style and the author’s voice managed to captivate me so much that these errors stopped bothering me early on! I was actually fangirling by Chapter 6! The only reason I had to stop reading was for work and real-life stuff.

The chapter-length has been maintained fantastically - even if some chapters are longer than I'd like, they're not forced - they feel natural – I didn’t feel bored at all. In fact, I didn't even feel the length of the chapter most of the time.

Nate's behaviour gets easier to understand when we start seeing his perspective. It was introduced earlier on in the book, which makes it all that better. Not too soon, not too late!

The ending was fantastic and I simply felt like I wanted to read the next book right away! Unfortunately, though, that will take time. But – here’s the fact: Cully Mack, you’ve got yourself a fan! All five stars! – because, the positive aspects more than outdo the negative ones.

“A Voice That Thunders” is an excellent read and I’d recommend this to lovers of LOTR and the Narnia Chronicles!

I have to say that this was a fun, entertaining read. The plot mostly centers on Mirah, a young woman kidnapped after her village is destroyed, and basically turned into a child-soldier, and Nate, one of the kidnappers who really doesn't want to be one. POV dips into others at times, mostly Gabe, Mirah's brother, who serves as this story's "chosen one." Said chosen one is not the primary protagonist of the story but more of a supporting role, which I found an interesting approach.

The story has a good pace and never really slows down. I found Mirah and Nate (and most of the characters, actually) to be basically likable, and relatable. The magic system of the Wielders has a decent spin and left some room for more exploring (as to what the long term cost of accessing such a power will do) and in general, the action sequences were exciting. There's certainly more story to tell and while this volume doesn't end on a cliffhanger, it sure left me with the feeling that the real story is just getting started.

That said, I don't think the plot had a whole lot of surprises and I kind of saw the major events coming. The emotional whiplash of the young lovers from "I hate you" to "I love you" to "I hate you again" to "I love you again" was a bit much for me but I suspect the target audience will identify with it much better. Also, I felt like there were a number of punctuation errors, especially with missing quote marks, though I only seemed to notice them when the action slowed; go figure!

Those issues aside, this was a fun read. I think it will appeal to those who like fast-paced books, magic and dragons, and young love.

A Voice That Thunders is a thrilling story...a story of siblings and their efforts to be reunited and to shake off the chains that bind them, not to each other, but to the supernatural beings who have taken over their world. They are thrown into the story when their village is decimated. Mirah is captured and Gabe is away for his own purposes. This begins the long road to be reunited. Their paths are VERY different. Mirah finds magic and, amazingly, love. Gabe finds loss and a new purpose. Their story makes this an exceptional read and I highly recommend it. The magic and the world building is unlike any I've read before and it's thoroughly captivating...

A Voice that Thunders by Cully Mack has all the elements of an excellently crafted fantasy novel: Different realms, gods, giants, demonic creatures, and mystical powers.

Gabe, a teenage boy, gets attacked by the Naphal while gathering Shrooms for his mother. Gabe is thrown into a boar’s pit where he is left to die. He is rescued by a Hermit, Meciel. A day later, Gabe learns his entire clan had been killed, and his sister was taken captive by the Nephilim. Against all the odds, Gabe vows to save his sister.

Mirah, Gabe’s sister, along with several of her friends are transported to Hermonial by Nate, a handsome sea captain, and Bishnor, Nate’s giant half-brother. Upon the girls’ arrival, they are brought before Shemyaza, where their destinies are dictated: Taphas, Azu, or Chashmalim.

The reader is allowed to see and feel the push and pull of Mirah and Nate’s chemistry: Nate’s desire to protect Mirah. Mirah’s confusion over Nate’s motives toward her.

It’s a story of true love, good vs. evil, with unlikely heroes.

Ms. Mack’s development of the characters, plot, and setting is exquisite. She artfully pulls the reader into each element of the novel. In our mind’s eye, we can see the wielders freezing and moving water, throwing fireballs, and moving earth with the assistance of their amulets. Ms. Mack’s usage of Old English mixed with current English makes the novel an easy, pleasurable read. Five stars!

A Voice That Thunders focuses on a pair of siblings Gabe and Mirah. The story opens with Mirah’s abduction of sorts while Gabe is a bit lost in the forest due to an attack on their village. From then on, Gabe disappears while Mirah learns about Shemyaza and his progeny (one of whom is Nate who has lead the abduction). The story progresses while we the readers are exposed to a variety of magic and gods. Gabe when he reappears after the first half is a changed person. The story was a very interesting one and while it had dark themes, it wasn’t a dark fantasy story. There are romantic elements which make it a bit of a light read.

I wanted to like this book but there were a lot of things that didn’t work. As the story focuses on Mirah solely showing her transformation while glossing over Gabe’s. It felt uneven as Gabe is supposed to be a co-protagonist. The story might work for readers who are looking for fantasy with a slight romantic bent as well as a few dark elements. Again this turned out to be a title for which perhaps I’m not the ideal reading audience.

This is a really good story with a Greek mythical feel to it, I just didn’t feel like I really connected with it and with the characters very well. The first part feels like a long build up to the second part where most of the action happens and most of it is about Mirah, we don’t really learn much about Gabe until towards the end of the first part when he comes to rescue Mirah and the others and he plays a really big part at the end. I’m undecided as yet to whether I want to read the next book or not, I’m intrigued to know what happens after the cliffhanger at the end!

A Voice That Thunders surprised me in the best way possible – with its characters. Fantasy as a genre tends to struggle with either characters that, while likable, feel remote and foreign or, on the flip side, may be incredibly relatable, but feel out of place in the story. Mirah and Nate feel like they both belong in an epic tale while still unique and close to the human heart. I have known many people that have traits like Mirah and Nate, but nobody with those exact combinations. Because of this, even though the characters experience some things commonplace in the Fantasy genre (destruction of hometown for instance), the characters themselves still feel genuine and real instead of the standard tropes or archetypes so common in Fantasy novels. I won’t go into details in order to avoid spoilers, just trust me when I say that Cully Mack is my favorite living author as far as character creation.

The world itself borrows from an under-utilized source – Sumerian mythology. As a lover of ancient myths and languages, I personally relished diving into a book that created a new mythos built on the foundations of this undervalued, storied culture. The names will be the first connection, but as you learn more about the peoples and creatures, you will see plenty of things that find pay homage to this ancient people while keeping it as an inspirational source instead of making a copy of it.

I also enjoyed the pacing of the book, though not everyone will agree with me on this. This is book 1 of a series, and you can tell that Cully understands that the characters are going to be what anchor and keep her audience, so she takes time to develop them and have them interact on a personal level. While the book both opens and ends with a battle, most of the conflict centers around individuals or inner turmoil. The pacing is not slow, but it is not breakneck speed either. Rather, it’s much more like long-distance running. The story is always moving at a good pace, just like a distance runner never stops running, but sprinting is saved for when the most benefit from the extra exertion can be gained.

In conclusion, there are two types of book recommendations I give – one is where I recognize there is an audience for this book, and the book was written well enough that people who enjoy books like it will enjoy this one as well. The second is the kind that I bring it up to my inner circle of friends and go, “you guys really need to read this.” I can happily say that A Voice That Thunders falls into the latter. I have already recommended the book to a close friend. Also, the book is one of five by indie authors I picked out to review before the end of the year, and now I wished I had saved this one for last so I could immediately continue on to the next one. But even though I can’t continue on immediately, rest assured I will be getting back to it as soon as I am able. Bravo!

‘A Voice That Thunders’ by Cully Mack is an ambitious debut into adult fantasy fiction. On one level it is a love story set against war. On another it introduces beings from another realm who behave like powerful gods. We also encounter a young man destined to become a saviour who might end the cruelty and evil that pervades this dislocated world. There is magic too, in the form of elemental manipulation which brings its own dangers.
It’s a lot to handle, certainly for a first-time author. For the most part, Cully Mack succeeds with passion and sensitivity. The story is well written, it has a pleasing, simple style which doesn’t impose on the flow of events.
The story leads us through a world dominated by the god-like Shemyaza, who gathers tithes – in the form of young women - who serve him as warriors. The story follows Mirah, one of the tithes, and the other girls abducted from their homes by the giant Nephilim and Nate, Shemyaza’s stepson to whom Mirah finds herself attracted.
Nothing is as it seems though. As the story progresses what Mirah believes to be true is slowly shown to be a lie. She also develops into something more than the helpless young woman abducted from her home. It’s a means to keep the reader guessing as the second half of the story unfolds into a complex narrative told from different points of view.
There are a couple of factors that spoiled the story for me though. First of all, is Mirah’s readiness to forgive the man who led the annihilation of her family and friends. It’s a case of Stockholm Syndrome, where the hostage falls in love with the abductor. I didn’t find it credible. It was too much of a plot device for me. Her initial distrust and subsequent anguish is too readily dismissed. The second half of the story only compounds this issue as the person Mirah has apparently given up on, as she accepts her new home, reappears.
Secondly, the second half of the story is too rushed. Mirah’s brother, Gabe, has a huge role to play in the story yet we see little of him. We meet him in the opening chapter and then he disappears for half the story. Yet his role is crucial. When we meet him again, he is a different person, he’s grown and changed yet we discover this entirely though exposition. He has the role of a joint protagonist but isn’t treated as such.
The story lacks balance for this reason; the first half indulges too long in Mirah’s development and her relationship with Nate. This happens at the expense of Gabe’s character. It’s a shame because the second half is exciting, ambitious and offers lots of potential for the series.
This book is also an entry into SPFBO6.

Imprisoned. A captive. What does it look like? Mirah knows. After watching most of her clan butchered before her eyes, she’s taken and forced to accept the enemy’s world as home. Images of the slaughter replay to keep the waking nightmare ever present in her heart. To survive, she makes the impossible choice to enter a new prison, one where she must train to become one of the enemy’s warriors to wield an elemental magic in her. It’s the only way to stay alive though. Mirah soon finds some people’s prisons are not easily seen. Like with Nate, one of her capturers. In this new world, she realizes not all of her enemies are as she perceived them. Some are bound by unseen shackles, as trapped as those they have captured and unable to escape the cruel grasp of this world’s masters. They are imprisoned by their own guilt for the part they are forced to played in the bloodbaths. It’s no longer just about her and those surviving few from her clan breaking free. It’s about seeing beyond her world, to do whatever it takes to shatter the chains that bind each of them from the true enemy stalking them. She can do it too, because she’s not the same girl that was taken captive. Experience has changed her, and she’s stronger in ways she didn’t realize. Perhaps most importantly, she is inspiring others in ways she never thought possible. Like Nate. He has the courage to finally do what he said couldn’t be done, to break through the prison he’s been trapped in for so long. Because now he’s found the reason he needed. The someone he needed. Nobody said the chains would be easy to break, or they could be defeated overnight. But isn’t freedom from this prison worth the struggle? Mirah and Nate would say yes, especially when you’ve seen the promise of what could be beyond the prison doors.

An epic fantasy read!

I've read many fantasy books and you can see the similarities. However, this book, A Voice That Thunders has taken me on a whole new unique adventure!

Mirah and Gabe are seperated after their family were slayed. Mirah, being part of a tithe, was delivered amongst several other women, to service Shemyaza, a God, where she learns to Weild a power. It's an epic love story too, where she falls in love with the stepson of Shemyaza. However, Hermonial isn't what it portrays to be. To learn a betrayal, and after she is reunited with her brother Gabe, she and her friends who were delivered to Hermonial, escape the island. But war is on the horizon. And of course, her lover, and her new found trusted friends, follow and track her down, where they reunite and fight together. But who gets lost in the portal?? Read to find out!
I enjoyed reading this book and right where I think it's predictable, it takes me on a whole new turn! It was such a fun read and very well written!

This book is hands down amazing. I could truly find myself in the story at all points. The balance of world building, character building and just the suspense of what’s to come was spot on.

I found it very easy to read where I didn’t feel overwhelmed with information, while the building of each section of the world I found room for my imagination to take care of the minor details often over explained.

The depth and thought that went into each character was showing through each new love, loss and every other emotion I went through. It was a wild roller coaster I didn’t want to end.

What I loved most was the unique plot. God like men, with the magic of the earth (air, wind, fire, water ) plus the devastation of war to come.

I can’t wait to start book 2!

A Voice That Thunders is Book 1 in a heart-pounding new series by Cully Mack. It's been on my TBR for a long time. Now I ask myself what took me so long? This book is amazing! If you like to binge-read, then you'll be happy to hear that the 4th book is already available.

There's magic, mythical creatures, humans, gods, and semi-gods. It has vivid worldbuilding with characters you'll love and hate. The pace moves quickly with dynamic POV changes.

The ending is surprisingly satisfying for a series. It doesn't end on a cliffhanger, but you'll be super keen to grab A Scream That Shatters to find out what happens next! I certainly am. I immediately placed Book 2 on my want-to-read list.

This book is fun to read with a variety of awesome characters fighting on the side of good. I want to read more about them. In fact, I want to spend time with them! This is a romantic fantasy that you won't want to miss!

Awesome

I wasn't sure what to think when I started this book. It started with Gabe in the woods and being attacked and left for whatever came. Then, it was his sister and her being taken, then it was Ammo. But it was intricately woven together to create a story about a God that is not a god and those who would overthrow him. Nate, the stepson and his friend; Mirah, Gabe's sister and her friends when they join with Gabe and those he is with. The characters grew as the book continued and I am looking forward to getting the rest of the series

What a wonderful book and a great start to the series. Cully creates a magical world full of amazing characters and creatures, and as the story progressed, I found I couldn’t put the book down. I wanted to know what happened next. And I just love the cover! The story begins with a violent attack on a peaceful village, where the attackers are violent blood- thirsty giants, the sons of a god and they leave none alive. Except for six girls who are taken as 'tithes' and begin a long journey back to be tested by Shemyaza, the god of his world. Cully creates wonderful characters that you can relate to. You are rooting for the girls and sympathise with their situation. Great read. Add it to your list. Look forward to reading Book two: A Voice that Screams.

Great story

Mirah, along with 5 other girls is taken as a tithe to serve a God after her village is destroyed by his giant son and his army. The story follows Mirah as she learns to wield powers given to her through an amulet, more power than any mortal before her!
I really enjoyed this book but would have liked to have learned more about her brother Gabes journey... in the 2nd half of the book he is one of the most important characters but his journey is hardly touched. Hopefully Cully Mack will tell his story in one of the next books.

Cully Mack ushers us into a fantastic, rich, and well-lived in world.

With fully fleshed out characters, demons, other dimensions, high-stakes and strong themes, A Voice That Thunders is a brilliant first entry, one that demands you read the next. I particularly enjoyed the magic system with how integral it is to the world and story.

Super twist on the chosen one trope, too.

When I started with Sojin i didnt know what to make of this story. I didnt connect with Sojin and found Ammo an arrogant prick (and he is :P). But after reading A voice that Thunders it all made sence. Another book that you want to read in one go, get a tea break and go in for seconds. I needed quite a bit more teabreaks but am still ready for seconds :D.

When Mirah's clan was destroyed, she was "rescued" and brought to a world of magic and wonder, but as with all good things, she would learn that her new world was also filled with many dangers. Hers is a fantastic journey filled with twists and revelations and might and magic.

This book was a wonderful surprise to me. Like many other readers have said, once I started, it was hard to put down. I had to find out what was happening with Mirah, Nate, Gabe, and Galia, to name a few of the fantastic characters in this book. There is an elemental magic system unlike anything I've ever read, but not everyone is chosen to be a magic wielder. Some are healers, others the mysterious Chasmalim. There are gods, demi-gods (giants), and both ordinary and not-so-ordinary mortals. And their stories intertwined and unfolded beautifully.

I wish I could live there for short while and witness everything that she experienced. But I don't want to spoil the fun. You'll have to read it for yourself.

I loved this story. Very well written with each different character drawing you into the story. A wide variety of beasts which I love & a group of disgusting giants. I felt so bad for the girls after what happened at Bakarel. Then they were taken against their will with no control of their fate. I didn't know what to think of Nate at first. As he started progressing in his role he grew on me. I loved the way Zeev was always harassing Neviah. As soon as the girls were in Shemyaza's city I knew Bishnor was going to be trouble. As the girls learned weilding & self defense I knew Mirah was strong. Their journey to freedom & defeating the enemy looked impossible until the day she found Gabe by the brook. Finally hope if they can defeat Shambala & his army. I now have another series to follow.

Well developed, complex characters and a storyline that has plenty of action and twists combine to create a book that is fun to read and keeps you interested.

A very good read

You know a books gonna be good when it's got multiple story lines, And when those journeys and stories start coming together... *Chef's kiss.* Our main character, Mirah really grows in this book, and will undoubtedly continue to in future books. I absolutely love this world. It's characters and lands, the monsters, and the plot! Mirah and her new friends face a lot, and grow both physically and mentally. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The reason I'm giving it four stars is because it's a great read, but at some points I wasn't a fan of the mc or her love interest. I also tend to give five star rates to those books I just can't put down. This one took be a bit to read, but it is still a fantastic book, and I highly suggest reading it for yourself.
