About the author
Lincoln Peirce
259 books1,113 followersLincoln Peirce is a cartoon artist from Portland, Maine. He lives with his wife and two children, and occasionally gives lectures to students about cartoon creating. Peirce writes the comic strip "Big Nate". Peirce's comic strip, Big Nate, is featured as an island on the famous children's website, Poptropica. Big Nate appears as the first cartoon on The Maine Sunday Telegram in the comics section.
He studied art at Colby College in Maine were he began cartooning. He also studied at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture before teaching art and coaching basketball at a New York highschool for 3 years. He currently plays hockey with "an old men's league" and describes it as his best sport as a child. In an interview with the Washington Post, Peirce stated that his last name is pronounced "purse" and is not a misspelling of "pierce."

On the panel Lincoln revealed he is currently working with some animation and licensing projects including the addition of a Big Nate island to the online game Poptropica.

Big Nate is hilarious as always. Nate, Francis, and Teddy will always be the perfect dynamic of friends and I love them so much. Lincoln Pierce’s drawing style stays funny and consistent. Reading these are the type of thing that makes me wish I had a newspaper with comics sent to me at least every week. Recommended for any kid below 12-years-old who refuses to read.
I got a free copy of this from Andrews McMeel Publishing through Netgalley. That didn’t affect my opinion at all. I just love Big Nate.

This is my first read of any of the “Big Nate” comic books written by Lincoln Peirce and I found it absolutely hilarious!
Big Nate: Payback Time! Brilliantly handles issues with friendships, school, relationships and acceptance, as well as bullying, the survival of the not-as-popular and many others. Once I started reading about Nate and his friends I was enthralled and if you haven’t already been acquainted, I’m sure that you will love Nate, too!

Another collection of strips with everybody's favorite sixth grader, Big Nate Wright. Whether he's tormented by Mrs. Godfrey, or tormenting Gina, it's good for at least a chuckle. That's definitely more than I can say about a lot of strips. Lincoln Peirce is putting in the work, and quietly creating something of an empire.

A comic book that made me think of Peanuts in its illustrations and style of humor. So maybe the Peanuts fans might enjoy it more then I did. It was entertaining and even funny from time to time, but just a bit too light for my personal taste!

Big Nate Payback time is a graphic/comic novel based on short stories of Nate ending with him getting even with payback.
There were some dry humour scenarios but at certain times I felt it wasn’t suitable for a children's book or at least for my children at least. I actually ended up stopping reading this book to the children and actually continuing on reading this one myself.
Here’s why:
Yes, with an age rating +7 (and me not being a prude) I thought words or phrases like “caress my body” -a name for a perfume, “hi ladies” or “babe-a-licious” aren't very suitable for those middle graders.
Idk, I could be wrong 😑 but it wasn’t something I was prepare to read to my children.
And the amount of bullying in this book was incredible, using words like “butt nugget” and “loser” wasn’t something I was expecting. I can understand how this book is portraying how students get bullied but surely there could be other ways this could be raised?
I did however like the mention of Steven Tyler, the lead singer of Aerosmith even though it was a case of mistaken name identity of a president- John Tyler.
I think this is something as a parent/carer/adult I would definitely check before you buy or read this book for your child/children.
I can see how this book might be suitable for some children, so please note this is just my own personal opinion of this particular book.

Lincoln Pierce does it again with another hysterically brilliant Big Nate novel. I am in love with the characters everything from their makeup to their personalities to all the mischief they get themselves in. I could not stop laughing at each page and I know our readers that are fans of the series will love Payback Time way more than I do.
We will definitely consider adding this book to our J Graphic novel collection at our library. That is why we give this book 5 stars.

'Big Nate: Payback Time' by Lincoln Peirce is another collection of comics about the troublemaking sixth grader.
This time Nate tries to convince everyone that he is allergic to his teacher Mrs. Godfrey. He also dresses as Gina for Halloween. He also shows a new student how a seasoned veteran handles detention.
If you like Big Nate, you will like this collection. If you are new to Big Nate, you can easily start with any collection and see what your favorite middle-schooler is talking about.

The book contains many scene where Nate was just trying to do something and does not realize that it wrong to do. And showing that he does not like his science teacher and going as far as saying he was allergic to her but it turns out that he was allergic to her perfume. Overall funny moments that make Nate who he is.

OMG! This is another hilarious read from the Big Nate series. I have to say that it’s as funny as the other books in the series. This is my 3rd Big Nate book that I’ve read and reviewed. Just can’t get enough of the jokes.
From the first pages, it’s just so funny to see Nate’s battle with Ms. Godfrey. The amazing thing is sometimes his logic seems to be acceptable (if something makes you allergy, you get rid of the source). It’s just a creative way for a 6th grader to achieve his goal. Gina and Nate’s battle go beyond trick or treating. Nate dressed as Gina because Gina is (in his perception) an evil villain. And in a normal world, his friends assumed he’s secretly in love with Gina. Even Principal Nichols has an inner thought about both characters (the recreation lounge incident).
This is by far the most hilarious and entertaining title from the Big Nate series that I’ve read. I will for sure keep reading the Big Nate series and review it!
Recommend for those who love to read comedy, not afraid to have a bit of crazy adventure and crazy logic of course.

Another entertaining Big Nate story! My 9-year old was eager to read this with me and enjoyed it. This book covers the typical middle school occurrences including detentions, writing assignments and crushes. The level of vocabulary was slightly advanced for my 9-year old but would be fine for my 12-year old.

Another hit for Big Nate!
I live with 2 Big Nate fans so I asked them to give me their thoughts. They laughed out loud while reading this book and their conclusion was that they loved every minute of it. Their only complaint was when it was over. Thanks to Lincoln Pierce for writing a series that young readers love and share. A recommended parent purchase!

February 1, 2022I think that this graphic novel is funny, well illustrated, and easy to read. In “Big Nate: Payback Time!” it tells us how Nate dislikes his social studies teacher, Mrs. Godfrey, becomes the mentor of a newbie in detention, and even gets in a school fight with a kid named Randy. Overall, this is a good book to read if your looking for something quick and easy.
