A bit unrealistic in places, but still an enjoyable read.

------------------------------------

3.5 stars

I liked the first half of this more than the second half, even though that wasn’t too bad either.

Ty’s boyfriend Maxwell has been beating him for the last 10 years. Ty doesn’t know how to get away when Maxwell controls everything.

When Ty ends up in the hospital, he sneaks out when no one is looking. He hitchhikes and tries to get to his brother in the town he grew up in.

But when he’s still quite far away he can’t get a ride anymore so he starts walking. But in his condition he doesn’t make it far before he passes out.

When he ends up in the hospital, his brother is there. And so is his former best friend Elliot. Ty hasn’t seen Eli in years, but he has always secretly been in love with him.

Eli can’t believe how much Ty changed. He hardly weighs anything, and there are bruises all over him. It doesn’t take a scientist for him to understand what happened to Ty.

When Eli says Ty is going home with him to recover, Ty’s brother objects. But Eli states he can protect Ty better since he is a police detective, and Corey reluctantly agrees.

Having Ty in his home is really doing something to Eli, but he also knows Ty needs time to heal, not to be jumped by his former best friend.

But as several weeks pass, Ty stars healing with the help of a good therapist, and now he needs to show Eli just how much he really wants him….

I really liked the hurt/comfort in this, and I loved how caring Eli was and how much he wanted to just make Ty feel better.

I really liked this, except that I noticed that some things were included that did nothing for the story. Like how Eli likes rough sex. The sex scenes were not particularly rough, and I had no idea why it was necessary for the love interest of a formerly abused character to love rough sex. It didn’t add anything to the story and it made me like Eli a little less actually. I mean, I would think rough sex wouldn’t be the first place your mind goes to when thinking of sex with your great love who had been abused. I would think that that stuff happens naturally, over time. But not to start with.

Overall this was a nice hurt/comfort story and I think it’s a great start to this series.

Highly unoriginal story with the last chapters missing. Quick and easy from point A to B. Made worse by the narrator, glossing over pauses and emotions. Also, he did not delete his errors in the recording of the last chapters. I believe, he did accidentally publish his previous, unfinished version.

Overall, a good story and an interesting premise. However, I think that the pace was too fast (e.g., it only took two weeks for Tyson and Elliot to get together) and that the story would have benefited from more tension (e.g., exploration of how Ty worked through his past experiences). I say this, of course, with an appreciation that this book talks about domestic abuse and the recovery journey following an abusive relationship with sensitivity, which makes it a good addition to the gay romance genre.

Tyson had started to distance himself from his friends and family after meeting his boyfriend. Eli was his bestfriend who had always wanted to be more than that and hoped to be one day until Tyson left their home town and never came around again. After a while of trying to remain in tysons life but constantly getting shut out, eli decided to give up and move on with his life without tye.One day tye turns back up nearly beaten to death and nearly starved and found on the side of the road and eli finds himself once again returning back into tysons life. Tyson put himself in a bad situation for too long and knew if he stayed then he wouldnt survive the next time his boyfriend decided to punish him. After nearly being beaten to death, he knew he had to leave and he was hoping by going home that the people he once loved would be able to forgive him and eli being one of them. This story contained domestic violence and there are some scenes that shows the abuse taking place. so if this is something you struggle to read about, then this book is probably best to stay away from. I enjoyed the book over all and think the author did a good job with showing the emotional tole each character took and making it relatable to real life situations. This story was both heartbreaking and a bit of an emotional ride. I feel like it was very well written and I don't feel like the romance between the two characters was too rushed. They loved each other for a long time and Eli knew Tyson had a long road ahead of him and was willing to be there every step of the way.

TRUE FRIENDS AND LOVERS ARE PRICELESS

This story made me feel wiped out and anxious. I know lots of abused people and to read just some of the things that Ty went through made my heart ache. The fact that he had a support system, that he didn’t think he did, made things much easier for him. I was elated that Elliot, Eli, was still there for him after ten years of everyone wondering what had happened to him. It made me feel good to know that his friends were there to help him overcome most of his insecurities. When he stood up to Maxwell, my heart cheered. The stories make me wonder why most people, no matter what they fear, won’t say how they feel about someone until it’s almost too late.

I hate leaving bad reviews - and this book is just shy of a 3 for me, as it's one of those books with POTENTIAL, enough for me to keep at it, but there was too much that just didn't end up working out. There's way too much telling instead of showing. The timeline is too short to make sense in between certain events, too rushed when there was no reason to rush it. *Potential spoilers at end of review regarding the timeline.*

I think if more time had been given in between various phases of the story, that alone might have helped, to show a more realistic timeline of recovery from long-term abuse. More consistency in the writing, more showing instead of telling would've also helped. Oh & one term that bugged me with relationship to it being tone deaf - twice Eli describes his attire as including a "wife beater." Yeah, lots of people call those types of tank tops that - but really? In a story with an abused character?

Also, there was this pivotal scene toward the end of the book in which another totally new person appeared out of nowhere and it was never explained why he was there or who he was with relation to the story. Eli said in his internal narration that he would figure out who he was & what he was doing there later...and then the guy was never mentioned again in any way. I even went back to read over a few chapters just to see if I missed it, but nope, can't figure it out. He's also not a lead character in the later books, so I'm not sure if we ever find out what this random person meant to the story.

I started out with the audio version, got about half way through & switched to print. The narration was inconsistent in that here & there, the narrator tried to do different voices for characters, (as one should), but then they would all sound the same. He also didn't pause enough between scenes, so that one moment someone was in one location & then barely a breath later, they were in a totally different location, or it was the next day. The narrator had a pleasant voice, but needed to slow down & try to differentiate voices.

Anyway, I might read more books in the series, as they are longer & reviewed better & for the audio, have a different narrator, but this one won't be a re-read.

**Potential spoilers with regard to timeline issues**

Ty was supposed to have taken 2 weeks to get from where he lived with his abusive ex to his hometown, but he said he worked odd jobs along the way, and had a ride for part of the way. And then once in his hometown, in 2 additional weeks, he went from malnourished & nearly skeletal to filled out & looking hot from eating more & going to the gym. At around the 2 to 3 week mark, he had already been going to a therapist twice per week & making progress - that just doesn't make sense in the context of the real world & how long it takes to even get an appt with a new therapist, let alone make progress he said he was making. About 3 weeks after leaving the abusive ex, he was hitting the sheets with Eli, who was into somewhat rough sex, including some light spanking - and Ty, despite only being 5 weeks away from a 10-year abusive relationship, and only a few weeks away from flinching at touch, was totally on board. It seemed like the author wanted to write a certain kind of relationship and didn't want to go to the trouble of developing it.

Tyson grew up with Eli. They were friends through high school and college, but in college, he starts dating Maxwell, who is not a nice guy. Tyson disengages from his family and friends for years until he reaches his breaking point. He's found on the side of the road having walked home.

Eli loved Ty and wanted to see what happened, but Ty disappeared. He's back now and not healthy. They work together to get him back to health and start their long-awaited relationship.

It was a good story, but seemed like Tyson recovered from his nightmare a bit fast, but that's probably just my opinion. I did like it and will probably read others in the series.

✔ Letto!
Per me è ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤

i read this book as part of an arc program. This is the story of Tyson, a young man who was in a long term relationship with Maxwell where he was abused and after a very bad beating, he decided he had to escape or he would end up dead. While Tyson was at the hospital after the beating, he was alone and he knew it was time to run. Tyson had no money or ID, but he knew he had to go. Tyson wanted to return to his hometown of Harlan. Elliot grew up with Tyson, but lost contact with him when they were in college. Elliot is now a detective with the Harlan PD and when Tyson's brother tells him they found Tyson on the side of the road unconscious outside of town, he rushes to the hospital with him. Elliot knows when he sees Tyson he was abused and malnutritioned. Elliot wants to protect Tyson and learn the whole story, but he also knows Tyson has to tell him when he is ready. Elliot wants Tyson to stay with him when he leaves the hospital because he can protect him. Tyson and Elliot fall into a comfortable routine and Tyson begins to heal. Elliot has always loved Tyson and wished they could be together, but he won't push things until Tyson is ready. Tyson really missed everyone in his life, especially Elliot, who he loves. Elliot helps Tyson heal and begin to start his life again, while working on a string of robberies. I really loved this book. It was hard to read about some of the abuse Tyson suffered. I think he was a lot stronger than he thought he was. I love how Elliot supported Tyson in everything. They both loved each other and i think they were great together. I think Tyson helped Elliot also and gave him something other than work to care about. Great story.

Really good until the end

Overall I really enjoyed Made For You. If it wasn’t for the end I would have given it a higher rating.
My issue is that there is a ton of build up and then it’s over super quickly leaving a lot of questions and little to no answers.
SPOILER WARNING - (I’ll try to be vague but still spoilers.)
First, a random guy is found in the yard but no explanation as to why he was there or what happened to him. I assume he is meant to be the one who has been breaking into all the homes but that’s neither confirmed or denied. Maybe it’s answered in the next book?
Also who was breaking into homes. At
Secondly, and the biggest problem I had with the book was the rescue. How did they find him? How did they know where to look? They’d been looking for the guy for weeks and nothing but suddenly they just knew??? The cabin took hours to get to and was in an undisclosed, secluded location but the cops somehow knew how to find it anyway? Also how did the cops catch up so fast? The kidnapped had a 2 hour head start and yet the police got there within minutes. Unless we’re supposed to believe that he was being beaten for 2 + hours straight but was still conscious, coherent, and not dead (despite also having been shot) when they got there?
Also the second domestic abuse victim apparently had a video of his beating. How did he manage that?
So many questions!
The final chapter felt like the author had a sudden time crunch and just quickly threw it together and called it done.
It was really kind of frustrating and made the epilogue far less enjoyable. It feels like an incomplete story to me to be honest.

Started out well but story felt flimsy

Another reviewer pointed out that the author made some strange choices for the characters, basically to force the romantic pair together and that this spoiled a promising story. I pretty much agree, though for slightly different reasons. When you consider that Ty would expect Maxwell to turn up sooner or later, staying with a cop rather than Ty’s more vulnerable brother actually makes a lot of sense. The reason why though, was that their close proximity brought them together way too quickly for someone in Ty’s situation. He should have been way too traumatised after 10 years of manipulation and violence to form a healthy relationship so fast. It felt more like instinctual behaviour to attract a man capable of protecting him rather than equal match. It would have been a much better story with a few adjustments. Have Ty stay with his brother and allow him to slowly heal and learn to trust. Charge Maxwell with assault. Ty’s injuries mean that he has more than his word as evidence. For that matter, the cops should have been suspicious whilst he was still unconscious. His injuries were unlikely for a mugging and his long term physical condition would have made long term abused obvious to the medical staff.
All in all, this author would do better to make the story fit facts rather than the reverse.

Trigger Warning: graphic physical abuse

Tyson and Eli grew up together along with Tysons brother. They were both secretly in love with each other but never shared their feelings. When Ty goes away to college and just never comes back, not even when his parents died, everyone just assumed he left his old life behind and was a jerk. So when Eli who is now a cop and Tysons brother get a call from the hospital that they have Tyson who had been beaten nearly to death by his partner it's a shock but they make it their mission to keep him safe. Especually Eli who offers his house using the excuse that he's safer with a cop.

I loved this book. It's a quick read. About 4 hours but felt complete. The plot is interesting and well written. It's pretty angsty. It keeps the reader in constant suspense so it's a definite page turner you will want to read all at once. I loved the 2 MCs. They were well developed and I thought they made a good pair. They had great chemistry. The love does come quick but with their given history is doesn't feel like instalove. It covers one of my favorite trope hurt/confort and doesn't disappoint. It's sweet and very sexy and has all the feels in between (happy, sad, angry, nervous) and of course a swoony HEA. I would definitely recommend this book.

OMG where to even begin. I only made it about 10 chapters in and I had it. Seriously. The bad reviews are correct. Idk who the fuck wrote it but they did ZERO research into how people are after experiencing domestic violence, what is realistic, and when they can feel safe gettinting into a new relationship along with how long it takes for someone to stop getting triggered from loud noises and anger and shit. fear responses are not logical, no matter how much you intellectually know the people around you are not going to hurt you, it takes more than 3 weeks to be able to say something along the lines of "There are loud noises but I know it's him and he won't hurt me so I am not afraid". And therapy takes months to years to get you into a good place.
As a dv survivor and a Psych major, none of this book is realistic at all and quite insulting. Just as a piece of advice, before writing about an experience that is not your own, DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH and maybe interview a therapist about likely reactions to things.

Finally Home!!

When Corey came rushing into the bar, Eli and friends knew something was going on. What they didn't expect to hear was that their friend and Corey's brother Ty was found on the side of the road just outside of town. He was on conscience, beaten and suffering from malnutrition, they hadn't seen or heard from him for ten years. Ty, being abused most of the time he was apart from them ran for his life after the last attack and the only place he could think of was home. Everyone was devastated to see him this way, but for Eli it was the worst, because he has loved Ty for as long as he can remember. As Ty woke and was on his way to getting discharged, Eli felt it would be safer for Ty to come home with him even against the wishes of his brother the doctor. It took a minute but Eli and Ty were becoming more comfortable with each other and old feelings start to surface. The love that neither one knew existed for each other, one kiss was the beginning of their life and journey together. GREAT STORY!!😍😍

First off, there should be trigger warnings for this story. There is physical, mental and emotional abuse in a blatant nature. Tyson has hooked up with the wrong man and for ten years he has suffered physical, emotional and mental abuse. Loosing all contact with family and friends, he finally gets up the nerve to leave Maxwell by sneaking out of the hospital after being badly beaten by him. Eli is Ty's best friend who has suffered these last ten years because Ty just up and left him immediately after college. Ty makes it home to his friends and older brother where he and Eli are unable to relax around each other, but try hard to let their love for each other shine through. This story has a lot of violence in it, tons of angst, loss, grief, loss of self esteem and respect. It is a story that has a story to tell and if there are no triggers for the reader is well worth reading. I voluntarily read and reviewed this ARC book.

Ty and Elliott were best friends and grew up together. When they went to college they drifted apart. Ty met Maxwell and for the next ten years was being abused. He landed in the hospital this time, while Maxwell was away from him he escaped. After being found on the side of the road he woke up in the hospital in his home town. Elliott brought him to his home for better protection. While there they found out about each other. They learned they each loved the other since school. Things were going along well until Elliott kept the fact that Maxwell had disappeared. Ty went to stay with his brother. After a couple of days of no contact, Elliott went to talk to Ty. When he got there he noticed things were not right. Calling backup from the police they found out Ty was taken. They found him and arrested Maxwell. In the end Elliott asked Ty to marry him.

one of the most insidious things about domestic abuse is the guilt and pain that are heaped on the victims
- by the abuser - this is your fault, see what you made me do,
- by the guilty abused - I made him do this, this is my fault, it is what I deserve for not getting away
- by others who know them - I have known that man all his life. no way is he an abuser. the bitch must have had it coming.

poignantly well drawn story of m/m domestic abuse.

and of the courage it took the abused to face it.
and of the courage it took for friends and family to help him move on
and of the courage it took to recognize deal with, and try to move on or past the various collateral damage.

powerful and painful.

Wow I think that this is the most emotional story that J.P. Oliver has ever written. Tyson is in a abusive relationship his partner Maxwell physically and mentally abuses him and Tyson is in the hospital from his last beating and while Maxwell is out of the room Tyson decides to run. Elliot is Tyson’s best friend who has been in love with Tyson for years but he never done anything about it but Tyson broke Elliot’s heart when he just up and left right after college, now Tyson is back and he’s a broken man. There are triggers of abuse in this story so if you are prone then I suggest you give this story a miss. I just couldn’t put this book down and I had a lump in my throat at the end but it’s an amazing story, like I said before this story is very emotional so have the tissues ready. An amazing story and I highly recommend this book it’s definitely well worth the read.

This is steamy, intense, dramatic and suspenseful. Eli is hard, unemotional, determined and protective. Ty is broken, vulnerable, strong and brave. After having been abused for 10 years, and almost beaten to death, Ty escapes and heads to his hometown. Eli is a detective on the force there and gets the call when Ty is found lying on the side of the road unconscious. They were best friends growing up, and they were each other's secret first loves. They have a chance to be together now. If Ty can heal from the trauma he endured. And if Eli can keep him safe from his abuser. It's a hard subject to read about, but it turns out to be a very heartwarming story.

Good story, true love and with their shared connection you can feel it.
Eli and Tyson were best friends with a couple other guys since they were in middle school and even Eli and Ty went to the same college. Eli felt for Ty was more than friends but never acted on it, same for Ty. 10 years since Ty’s older brother, Eli or their other friends hasn’t seen Ty since he met ‘Max’ in college and pretty mush disappeared. On the run Ty is heading home from a near death beating and now Eli and the others will do what it take to help Ty become the same guy he was before he met his abuser. But happiness is always short lived when the past comes to collect, will Ty survive his past or will Eli push Ty away for good with all the secrets he’s been keeping???

Audiobook edition

This audiobook broke my heart. I hate hearing of anyone going through domestic violence, and to think Ty went through it for ten years. Really broke my heart, I just want to hug him and never let go while at the same time murder Max. I'm happy he found his friends and family again and was able to heal. Him and Elliot was truly made for each other. I loved watching them fall in love again, seeing Ty heal and learn to be happy again. J P Oliver did this story theme justice and I enjoyed it. First time listening to Max Christian and he was ok mostly, however he did give each MC their own voice and that was distracting sometimes not knowing who was talking. This story focuses on three return of Tyson to his hometown and how his brother and friends help him heal and recover from the effects of physical and mental abuse. At the same time, Elliot has become lead detective and has a troubling case.
Long kept secrets are revealed, danger is renewed, passion is ignited, emotions overflow, and live blooms.
This is a great story with characters and storyline that are interesting and will keep your attention.
I would have given five stars but it left some unanswered questions and some aspects of his recovery seemed too quick.

Tension Exploding Off Every Page!

An abusive boyfriend, Maxwell Vincent, refuses to relinquish his hold on Tyson Rowe, who has escaped to his hometown. When Maxwell comes looking for him, he discovers that he has found his way to the first man he ever loved, Detective Elliot Mack. The attraction Tyson and Eli felt for each other had never been acted on and Maxwell was determined no one would ever have Tyson except him.

The tension throughout the story is intense and just when you take a deep breath...you lose it again!

A great story with wonderful friends and passionate lovers.
