Lady Violet is Mrs. Wakefield now, and she’s settled rather comfortably into her life. When she meets a chocolate artisan, she decides that nothing else will suit than an evening at home—with chocolate—as a married woman.
When she invites her friends to her house, she little expects her home to be christened not by chocolate but by murder. Yet again, Vi, Jack, and friends are dragged into a murder investigation. Just who would commit the crime of poisoning chocolate? And why?

A good read. Loved the fact that she has gotten to know her youngest step-brother even if he has been forced into her company. A plot of plain greed and disregard for family. She has been told to take charge of her youngest step-brother (even if it means that jack drags him out of bed in his pyjamas) when she travels down to meet Jack's family and await the birth of Vic and Kate's baby. Their journey down is broken up by meeting a chocolatier, a full blown row with his family over the patriarch's will, a step-brother who gets drunk and breaks his arm and a party. When the uncle both she and Jack like gets murdered questions arise. How to keep Denny and his pregnant wife safe? How to get her step-brother to leave her? How to find the killer? All seem in vain until one of the young girl cousins comes up with a plan. Will it work? Will she have a Vi junior niece?
Book #12 in the series we finally meet Jack's family, from Grandfather Wakefield to the grandkids - quite a number, quite a motley crew. The regular gang is also around, including Geoffrey, Violet 's youngest sibling. It's almost time for Kate to have her offspring and Victor is hovering. Add to this a murder to solve, this is another good read from Beth Byers.
Lady Violet and her husband Jack head for the country to meet Jack's family. Unfortunately, Violet's spoiled brother Gerald is foisted on them for the trip. On the train, Violet meets a woman with a plan to expand her chocolate business, who has been refused the money by the male bankers who don't believe a woman can run a business. Violet decides to check her business plan and her chocolate at a party for Jack's family, who have been fighting over who will inherit Jack's grandfather's business. When one of the heirs is murdered by chocolate at the party, Jack and Violet must solve the case before anyone else dies. Will Gerald ever grow up? Will the murderer be stopped? And will anyone get to enjoy the chocolate? Loved the book!
Not enough for an extra star but if they keep improving then maybe.
Fewer errors, still no real evidence just setting them up and watching them admit it.. wish she'd give us some clues or find some actual evidence.. Violet never actually solves anything she just sets up the potential killers and let's them admit it.. quite honestly I don't think they'd be so stupid to do that if they were conniving enough to kill.. but there maybe writing so many so fast gives little time to actually fill the story out and give readers something to get themselves actually involved in
This cozy mystery series is terrific! The plots are extremely well developed and rather involved. The characters are quite enjoyable and their interaction usually funny. Vi and Victor, twins, are now both married but their lives are still very intertwined. They are in the country visiting Jack's family and murder again rears it's ugly head. This is a very personal crime because the murderer must be a relative. Another exciting conclusion and happy, surprise ending!
I LOVED this volume. I’ve been enjoying this whole series hugely, but something about this one was absolute perfection. I have said previously that I love how this series deals with rougher topics. I like how they often end up being suspects. I LOVE how it deals with family relationships, and I love the addition of Geoffrey in this one. I was in tears by the end. This is officially my new favorite series. I may not review them all, but you can definitely trust that I’ll be breezing right through them and then starting over for a reread!
What a great story! What an even better ending! I have loved all the books in this series, but this book, I will remember best. The plot is easily followed, the characters, main and supporting are very interesting, and the story is as old as humanity. Brother against brother, sister against sister, and all worried they will be left out of the will. Violet was very smart going to the females and they captured the murderer. I highly recommend this book.
Life continues. Now it's Jack's turn to deal with his family drama and secrets. So off we go th Victors homestead..Of course a murder occurs and must be solved. Ending in a two blessed events. I did miss the entire gang being there. However the addition of Bias younger brother was hilarious. If you're a fan you'll like it. Beware it's only 150 or so pages.
All of these books have had those traits in common. This was more clever than most of the rest, more honest about people and the sparse of their personalities and resulting actions. It was a pleasure to read, required no skipping through what I consider “extraneous” prose. All of it was good and beguiling.
Violet & co have a new member. Violet is shackled with including her half brother by order of her dad. Will she help him to become a worthwhile human being? She sets out to meet the Wakefield clan. It seems they have bitter rivalries that leads one of them to murder.
While I did enjoy this book, it didn't read as well as previous ones. I felt the murder was tied up rather quickly and the ending was a bit 'pat'. I will still read further into the series, but a few more twists in this one would have been good, keep us readers guessing!
Back to a time when things were simpler, but not easier. Enjoyable easy reading. Love the characters, with all their different personalities. Oh and the fashion.
Once again, Beth Byers has produced a mystery both heart warming and satisfying. Having read all of the Violet Carlyle series so far, I look forward to the next installment with pleasure.
While visiting the country and getting to know Jack’s family, murder joins the party. Where to look for a murderer when everyone is family and only Jack and his father don’t have a stake in Grandfather’s will. Great mystery. Great characters.
This author is a little too wordy at times and can take too long getting her thought across, but she does an excellent job of developing her characters and their position in the plot. Looking forward to reading more of this series.
Ok well everything is good except one of Jack's uncles is murdered. So Violet cracks the case--but of course BUT then is it over. Ms Byers needs to give us a bit more after solving the crime. Oh and Kate is no longer pregnant--but if I say anything more I will spoil the surprise!
Oh my gosh! This was a great read! Definitely one of my favorites. I know there are many more books in this series... but this is definitely one of the best so far. I love all of the characters and even the ones I didn’t think would develop are surprising me. I can’t wait for the next book!
Yes, there is always a murder, and evil deeds done by evildoers. But...a fun read finding the right evil doer and bringing him/her to justice nevertheless. Love this whole series...and already have the next one in my library.
I loved how Geoffrey transformed and there’s hope for the little wart. And perfection when Kate and Victor finally get perfect little Agatha and Vi Jr. Sweet and yet always has a Murder twist. I LOVED IT!
Violet plans a chocolate experience in her house that turns deadly. In this delightful addition to the series, a sweet ending will only happen if the killer is caught.
This is a great mystery with fun loving characters with hearts full of love and kindness and some not so much due to greed and fear. It even shows how some warts can surprise you for the better 😈❣️💃🏻🙀
The more of these books I read, the more I enjoy Ms. Byers plots. I would recommend this series to just about anyone who is not threatened by a smart woman with a good sense of humor. Looking forward to number 13.
Great plot. Jack has his work cut out for him. Even visiting Jack's family gets them involved in yet another murder. Love the addition of Violet's little (step)brother, Geoffrey.
I quite liked the happenings with Violet's circle, Victor, Lila, etc., but the array of suspects seemed rushed. Especially considering they're Jack's family
