Zoo Man: Inside the Zoo Revolution

Rate this book
Zoo Man details this remarkable transformation while chronicling the career of one of the world's most innovative zoo directors. The fascinating turning point of Zoo Atlanta is also a window into the international revolution in zoo architecture, design, and philosophy. Once considered by some as cruel incarceration of animals, zoos have become naturally designed refuges for our planet's endangered wildlife. Zoo Man is and insider's account of the modern zoo revolution as well as an intimate look at the remarkable animals - and people - with whom Dr. Maple has worked.

I loved this book from start to finish! “Zoo Man” is an autobiography written by Terry Maple, who was the zoo director that led the zoo from being one of the worst in the county to one of the best.

“Zoo Man” outlines that journey. Maple describes the issues in the zoo and talks about the evolution of zoos from prison-like cages to modern, scientific-based enclosures that accurately mimic the animals’ natural habitat.

I’m a bit odd, but I found the book very inspirational. Well worth the read.

This book inspired me to make the career change I began pursuing with renewed vigor in 2022. It took me about 20 years to figure out where I might fit into zoo's and I thank Dr. Maple for sparking my vision.
