Theresa Shaver lives in South Central Alberta Canada. As an avid reader, I used to dream about writing and sharing my own stories with the world. Publishing was a far off and intimidating goal until Amazon opened the gates! I love that I get real feed back from my fans on my books instead of some guy behind a desk who studies market trends. I write to share my dreams with the world and now I can. My first series is a Young Adult Post-apocalypse story. I love writing about the growth of characters faced with such huge challenges and plan to continue future stories in wrecked worlds. It's a new do it yourself world in so many industries so never stop believing in your dreams and do it yourself!
Endless Winter Box Set Books 1-4 [Kindle Unlimited] — Theresa Shaver January 11-23, 2020
Brief description here, full review under title.
1. Snow and Ash (2 parts; 32 chapters total.) January 11-12, 2020
After a nuclear war leads to mass destruction, Skylar is left to take care of her brother Benny in a high tech man-cave that her father built for the family. As she struggles to survive, a boy, Rex, that her family drove past in the aftermath ends up in a nearby town hunkered down in a room with his brother Matty and two other people they begin to see as family. The chapters alternate between Skylar and Rex and focuses on their individual difficulties, with a climax that Rex doesn’t see happening, and an ending with Skylar not sure of the future. The first part was an extremely fast read. The action picks up almost immediately and the focus on Rex and Skylar lives balance the plot. The second part, though doesn’t read as fast, is still interesting enough to finish the book over a period of two days. Fantastic first book in series. I thought I was done with dystopian books, but I have read Theresa Shaver before and her books are very well written (despite the need for an editor to clean up grammatical issues.) Four stars.
2. Rain and Ruin (Prologue + 28 chapters) January 13-15, 2020
This felt like an in-between story. It continues where it left off, but doesn’t really fulfill the way book 1 did. There is plenty of excitement, but not the kind of excitement that really enticed me or kept me turning the pages. As a consequence, it took me longer to finish. Basically, this is the story about how Rex and Sky’s separate families become one. The ending is an absolute cliffhanger, and I’m glad I am reading this four book set together, or else I may have stopped reading at this point. I should not there are some intensely sad scenes in this book, especially toward the end. Two stars.
3. Sun and Smoke (Two interludes + 17 chapters) January 15-17, 2020
I am happy to say that this book felt a lot more like book 1. We get a brief backstory of Jackson and Joslin’s story (although I didn’t much like that the author uses two very similar sounding names for these two characters.) There is sadness in the story, along with some very intense and perceived violence (oh, it’s there, not written per se, but read into it,) about Jackson’s and Joslin’s mom and parents. But there is karma too. These two are great character adds for this series and the climax at the end (another cliffhanger,) leaves me wondering what book 4 is about. Really. The author could leave the story here and be fine. I’ll let you know if 4 is as worthy as book 3 was. Four stars.
4. Fire and Fury (22 chapters) January 19-23, 2020
In many ways this book felt like it was written partly for the female fans of the series. After all, many of the kids are now young adults and feeling the desire to couple up. However, not all is peachy-peachy, as trouble is brewing on the horizon. First the group runs into a group of six survivors and then things get worst from there. The plot feels a little wishy-washy, much like book two. There is a sort-of cliffhanger (I’m not sure, but I think this might not be the last I see of this group.) I’m not sure I will continue with this series. There was a section in this book where a character briefs someone on what when down when they were gone, but the whole section felt like filler because it repeats the actual action that happened. It could have been cut out completely and the author could have simply that said the character filled the other person in. A few grammatical errors here and there. This book ran longer than I thought it should. It took me longer to read; it plodded along and didn’t hook me. Two and half stars.
By far, the best book was the first, Snow and Ash. It was action packed from beginning to end. Book three is just as good as book one, but for different reasons, and not as strong as the first in the series.
I enjoyed these characters for the most part, but there were places in each of the books except for the original one, that seemed if they went off the rails slightly. This is book series is similar yet different from other dystopian series by this author. The first book is always the strongest, but by the third one, characters I liked have moved on or the book has gotten very soppy. Both happened in the fourth book, however, there is a slight cliffhanger that indicates we will be seeing this group again. And finally, while Skylar makes growth in the first three books, her growth sees to stall in the fourth one. The story is not so much about her anymore (which was really the case, mostly, in book three when the concentration was on Jackson and Joslin.) I enjoyed the story more when the writing was tight, and action packed.
Despite the great start in the first book, and the third book, the other two book drag the story down and this four book set ends up being a high three stars. If you stopped after book three, it would have been a solid four star set.
I enjoyed this series. There were a number of typos and what I would call "casual writing." However, these things did not stand in the way of an excellent story with a number of engaging characters. I rooted for Skylar and Rex and was suspicious of most everyone else. I love the super duper ultra stocked mountain hideaway and Skylar's AI companion/protector. I would have been happy to stay there indefinitely. The plotting is not perfect (one example - a big buildup to the confrontation with the scary cannibals - only to have them all mowed down in an instant by the army who shows up just at the right time) but no question this writer has a terrific imagination.
I have read hundreds of end of the world prepper stories. This is truly the best storyteller I have come across. The characters in this and her other series are so well writte and believable ! It is a fast read you just do not want it to end! I hope Theresa Shaver continues this series on. I will be waiting!!!
Loved this, fast pace…..sweet young love, and a very descriptive world and characters- was wanting more after 4th book……it didn’t feel finished ( the series) and I just wanted to read more………
The story was enjoyable. That said, I had to knock off a star because of one issue throughout the story; the number of times the word "THEN" was used instead of "THAN". Each time it happened, it pulled me from being fully engrossed in the story.
Loved the characters, the storyline, the bunker. I read it all night. This author is amazing. Often I would have to to back to the chapter teasing to remember who was talking.... But that was ok.
Great writing, great story. I was very impressed overall. Gripping story line, interesting characters. It gives you hope and then tosses you into despair only to bring hope again.
