24 books190 followersSven Regener is a German musician and writer living in Berlin. In 1982 he recorded his first LP with the band Zatopek and in 1984 he joined Neue Liebe. In 1985 he founded the Berlin band Element of Crime together with Jakob Friderichs. He writes almost all their lyrics as well as playing trumpet.
In 2001 he published his first novel, Berlin Blues (original title Herr Lehmann), which achieved sales of around one million copies. The book takes place in autumn 1989 in Berlin. In 2004, Regener was awarded the Deutscher Filmpreis for the screenplay to the film of the same name (best screenplay that has been turned into a film).
His second novel, Neue Vahr Süd, was released in 2004 and follows the life of Frank Lehmann while serving in the Bundeswehr in 1980 in Bremen. In 2008 this was followed by a third novel, Der kleine Bruder (The Little Brother) which dealt with the time between 1980 and 1989.

Dieses lustige Buch lässt sich daran erkennen, dass es zu einen bestimmten Literaturgattung aus dem zwanzigsten Jahrhundert gehört, die um einen genialen, unzufriedenen, misanthropischen, in einer großen Stadt wohnenden Böhmen handelt. Es hat mich sofort an Kästners Fabian oder Remarques Drei Kameraden erinnert. Ich finde es ein verlockendes Genre, und ich glaube, dass Regeners Herr Lehmann, im Vergleich mit anderen Büchern ihrer Art besonders effektiv ist. Es trifft den richtigen bitteren Ton, ohne in mürrische Melancholie zu überschreiten, und anders als Kästners Buch versucht Herr Lehmann nicht, alles in irgendeiner Kernbotschaft zu verbinden. Stattdessen begnügt es sich damit, unzusammenhängend herum zu bummeln. Ich glaube, das passt ziemlich gut mit seinem Titelheld, dessen Leben von seinem eigenen gestaltlosen Wertebewusstsein geprägt ist.
Als ein Berliner Roman ist dieses Buch sehr überzeugend, nicht nur aufgrund seinem Lokalkolorit und seinen geografischen Details, welche reichlich vorhanden sind, sondern auch wegen Regeners tiefgreifenden Verständnisses der berlinischen Psychologie. Jeder, der die berühmte Berliner Schnauze verstehen will, könnte keine bessere Fallstudie finden.
Als man mit diesem Buch anfängt, ist es gut zu wissen, dass es in den späten 80er Jahren stattfindet. Ich glaube, dass das nicht erwähnt wurde, bis in der zweiten Hälfte.

This hilarious book is immediately recognizable to me as belonging to a particular sub-genre of twentieth-century German fiction - novels about intelligent, disaffected, misanthropic young male bohemians lost in the big city, often Berlin. I thought immediately, for example, of Kästner’s Fabian, or Remarque’s Drei Kameraden. I find it a compelling and attractive type, and relative to others of its ilk that I have read, I would say Regener’s Herr Lehmann is particularly effective. It strikes just the right tone of bitterness, that does not overshoot into morose melancholy, and it does not make the mistake Kästner made of trying to tie the thing into some kind of message, but is content to mostly float along in a fairly disconnected way. I think this is the best fit for its protagonist, whose own life is marked by the shapelessness of his own sense of value, and who finds himself throughout largely at sea.
As a Berlin novel, this book is enormously satisfying - not just for its local color and geographical details, which are both substantially in evidence - but especially for its deep understanding of the Berliner psychology. Any non-native trying to understand the legendary Berliner Schnauze could hardly find a more illuminating examination of the attitude, along with its origins and character.

Lehet, hogy itt kezdődik a felnőttkor? Amikor elkezdesz gondolkodni, melyik kocsmába is lenne kedved menni este, és rájössz, hogy egyikbe sem? Bonyolítja a dolgot, hogy az egyik viszont a munkahelyed.
Lehmann úr Nyugat-Berlinben él, és közeledik a 30. születésnapja, amit valamiféle ijesztő választóvonalként érzékel. A történelmi idő 1989, ami – mi tudjuk – a berlinieknek sorsdöntő esztendő, de Lehmann úr ebből nem sokat lát. Ő csak pörög a nyugat-berlini éjszakában a haverokkal, csapolja nekik a korsókat, és közben az identitását keresi. Itt érdemes talán rámutatni egy analógiára – bár Lehmann úr valószínűleg hülyének nézne, ha ilyesmivel traktálnám -: ahogy neki szembe kell néznie azzal, ki is ő tulajdonképpen, úgy kell szembenéznie hamarosan Nyugat-Berlinnek is ezzel a kérdéssel. Mert Nyugat-Berlin identitását a Fal adja, ami elválasztja az NDK-tól. Hogy ő egy enklávé, sziget a szocialista óceánban. De ha a Fal leomlik, akkor mi lesz vele, mi lesz az önazonosságával? Hogyan definiálja újra magát? És hogyan definiálja magát újra Lehmann úr?
Nem az a fajta karneválian vicces kocsmaregény, amire a fülszöveg alapján talán számítottam. Mert a pörgés, ami Lehmann úr (és a haverok) létállapota, az első pillanattól kezdve vészjóslónak tűnik. Az ember érzi, hogy a centrifugális erő bármerre kivetheti magából a szereplőket – bármerre, de leginkább lefelé, a totális lecsúszásba. Persze amíg tart a sörök gőze, addig az egész kellemesen, otthonosan tompa és időtlen. Észre sem veszi az ember, ha szökni kezd belőle az erő. Vagy amikor már észreveszi, akkor késő, nem tud a gödörből kikapaszkodni. Úgyhogy kikér még egy sört, hadd takarja el a gőz a gödör falait. De te, Lehmann úr, ne igyál többet. Hagyd az ötödik Beck's-et a pulton, nincs rá szükséged. Menj nyaralni, Balira vagy akár Lengyelországba. Jó lesz, hidd el. Szorítok neked.

Eigentlich habe ich meist Probleme mit deutschen humorvollen Büchern. Das was ich bisher gelesen habe (Uschmann, Pollak etc.), ist eher Comedy und für mich überhaupt nicht witzig. Dieses Werk war aber komplett anders und hat mir gut gefallen. Wie eine irrwitzige lustige Zwangsneurose kommen die Dialoge und Geschichtln daher, am besten war die Szene mit dem Hund und die sinnlose Diskussion mit der Mutter auf den ersten Seiten.
In der Mitte des Buches geht ein bisschen das Tempo und die Skurillität verloren, weshalb ich mit Bedauern einen Punkt abziehe.
Auf jeden Fall ist die Geschichte sehr lesens- und liebenswert und hat mich total mit dem deutschen Humor versöhnt. Möchte gerne weitere derartige witzige deutsche Satiren lesen!

Berlin blues, better suited mister Lehman (in the German version), is just one of these books about nothing and everything. It gives us a peek to the ordinary lives of a few Berliners, Lehman included, that are the living scene of the 80s Berlin night life, with it's wicked routine of the "trying to be normal divided city".
The book climax is really the anti climax of the book, when the banality of the anti hero's life unravels. This is an excellent read, especially if you fancy a getaway into former, simpler and different times.

Πως και μου είχε ξεφύγει τόσο καιρό το συγκεκριμένο διαμαντάκι; Το βιβλίο το αγόρασα πριν κάνα δυο μέρες, διάβασα δοκιμαστικά τις πρώτες σελίδες για να δω τι λέει, και έφαγα κόλλημα με τον τρόπο γραφής. Μετά, η όλη ανάγνωση θύμισε αγώνα ταχύτητας, πραγματικά ούτε θρίλερ με καταιγιστικούς ρυθμούς να διάβαζα. Συγκεκριμένη πλοκή δεν υπάρχει, απλώς παρακολουθούμε σκηνές από την καθημερινότητα μερικών Βερολινέζων -συμπεριλαμβανομένου του κυρίου Λέμαν- που αποτελούν μέρος της νυχτερινής ζωής του Βερολίνου, στα τέλη της δεκαετίας του '80. Ο συγγραφέας με ωραίο χιούμορ και διάφορες τραγελαφικές καταστάσεις σκιαγραφεί τους μποέμ τύπους του Βερολίνου εκείνης της ενδιαφέρουσας εποχής. Πραγματικά ο τρόπος γραφής, με το χιούμορ, τους κωμικούς διαλόγους, τις ρεαλιστικές περιγραφές καταστάσεων και σκηνικών, μου άρεσε πάρα μα πάρα πολύ, αλλά ίσως και να μην είναι για όλα τα γούστα. Όμως, ειλικρινά, λίγο με ενδιαφέρει αυτό, από τη στιγμή που ταίριαξε απόλυτα με τα δικά μου γούστα. Επίσης, δεν μπορώ παρά να δηλώσω ότι συμπάθησα πάρα πολύ τον πρωταγωνιστή της ιστορίας, τον "καημένο" κύριο Λέμαν, που ουσιαστικά περνάει μια υπαρξιακή κρίση στα τριάντα του χρόνια. Το μόνο σίγουρο είναι ότι θα μου λείψουν οι διάφοροι χαρακτήρες, καθώς και η όλη ατμόσφαιρα του βιβλίου.

Ich konnte mich mit Herrn Lehmann einfach nicht anfreunden.. Zwischendurch hatte das Buch ein paar gute Stellen, meist jedoch musste ich mich einfach nur durchquälen..

Läste den svenska utgåvan ”Herr Lehmann” som tyvärr inte fanns på GR. Otroligt rolig bok, högt tempo, skarp dialog och en känsla för de små detaljerna hos karaktärerna som gjorde dem distinkta och meningsutbytena komiska. Ett stråk av vemod genomsyrar berättelsen men det är ett gott, trivsamt vemod som förstärker den komiska effekten.
Vill härmed flytta till Kreuzberg i början på 90-talet och ge mig ut på en ändlös pubrunda.

Λίγο πριν την πτώση του τοίχους ο κ. Λέμαν, κυνικός αργόσχολος τριαντάρης, ζει μια ήσυχη ζωή ασκώντας το επάγγελμα του μπάρμαν, έχοντας καταφέρει το όνειρο κάθε ενήλικα που σέβεται τον εαυτό του: να μην έχει ευθύνες, να ελαχιστοποιήσει την πίεση από τους γονείς και να παραμένει αδέσμευτος. Όμως μια σειρά από αναπάντεχα γεγονότα θα τον ωθήσουν να κάνει κάποιες αλλαγές στην ζωή του: ένας σκύλος που τον έχει βάλει στο μάτι, μια αγγαρεία από τους γονείς, μια νεαρή σέφ που είναι ενοχλητικά ερωτεύσιμη και ο καλύτερος φίλος του ο Κάρλ με τα υπαρξιακά του προβλήματα....
Τα "Μπλούζ του Βερολίνου" ήταν ένα βιβλίο outsider, το πήρα δώρο με αγορές άλλων βιβλίων αλλά έκανε την έκπληξη. Απρόσμενα έξυπνο, απρόσμενα διασκεδαστικό και αρκετά εσωστρεφές καθώς βρήκα λίγο από τον εαυτό μου στον Λέμαν. Μου θύμισε σε σημεία ένα άλλο αγαπημένο βιβλίο (και τανία) το γνωστό "High fidelity" αλλά και πως η ενήλικη ζωή είναι είναι πολλές φορές μια κακόγουστην σεφερλίδικη φάρσα παρά οτιδήποτε άλλο. Κρίμα που δεν κυκλοφόρισαν τα υπόλοιπα βιβλία του Ρεγκένερ θα ήθελα πολύ να τα διαβάσω.

Following the trials and tribulations of Frank Lehmann, a soon to be 30-year-old, as he coasts through West Berlin's nightlife in the fall of 1989, little suspecting that life in the divided city is soon to to change considerably, this seems to be somewhat of a cult novel in Germany, but fell a little flat for me. It's funny, sure, but the humour only worked for me about half of the time and otherwise there wasn't much there to get excited about.

Over the years, I have read bits and pieces of Berlin Blues (Original title: Herr Lehmann), but had never read it from cover to cover. And so I finally decided to make time to do so, and downloaded the German version from Audible. And I am so glad that I did! Listening to it made me laugh out load! Berlin Blues is such a beautifully dark portrait of West Berlin Kreuzberg in the late 1980s, days before the fall of the wall.
Perhaps reading this book also brought such joy to me because the plot is so Berlin, and mentions not only bars and cafes by name, but also streets and parks, and these were my streets and parks during my life in Berlin. And so this sense of the familiar and home, combined with a funny, tragic story, made this a truly enjoyable read. Would I have loved this as much if I didn't know Berlin? I really can't say, but I don't think so. It would still be funny, but I suspect most people who love this book are Berliners themselves. But it is still worth the read, even if you aren't one.
Note however that a lot of the humor is lost in translation, so if you can, read this in German. The audiobook version is fantastic.

Zu Beginn dachte ich noch "Oh, wie schön, mal ein anderer Schreibstil." Aber spätestens ab dem zweiten Kapitel ist mir der Schreibstil vom werten Protagonisten ziemlich verdorben worden.
Lehmann nervte mich. Er nervte mich einfach. Irgendwie ist er absolut desinteressiert an seinem Umfeld, andererseits nervt ihn selbst alles und jeder Mensch und ständig muss er mittels unglaublich haltloser Argumente diskutieren, über Dinge, die ihn eigentlich eh nicht interessieren.
2 Sterne gibt es nur, weil es im Verhältnis zu den anderen Schullektüren, die ich lesen musste, eines der weniger schlimmen war.

Berlin Kreuzberg, 1989. Frank wird bald dreissig und deshalb von allen nur Herr Lehmann genannt. Er arbeitet in einer Kneipe und tut das gerne, auch wenn sich das sonst keiner vorstellen kann. Und egal, in was für Situationen er gerät - die Begegnung mit einem gemeingefährlichen Fifi, der Besuch der Eltern, denen er vorgegaukelt hat, Geschäftsführer zu sein, Katrin, die nicht nur ihn an ihr rumfummeln lässt, oder auch der Versuch einer Reise nach Ostberlin - Herr Lehmann behält immer auf seine sympathisch-unbeteiligte Art den Durchblick.

Leider bin ich mit den Charakteren überhaupt nicht warm geworden, teilweise haben sie mich sehr genervt, insbesondere der Protagonist,
Ich habe es als Hörbuch gehört und es ist mir nicht leichtgefallen dem Sprecher bzw. Autor zu folgen,da er doch sehr mit Dialekt spricht und es so meiner Meinung nach nicht soo gut zur Geschichte gepasst hat. Wenn ich es gelesen hätte, hätte es mir eventuell ein bisschen besser gefallen.

Anfangs sehr witzig wird jedoch etwas schleppend zum Ende hin, für echte Berliner bestimmt noch witziger

Y pensar que solo me costo como 3 dólares.. este libro es bueno, no buenísimo.. pero si bueno, creo que la función de los libros es generar sensaciones en los lectores y este libro me causó angustia y compasión por el personaje principal, que hombre para ser tan de malas y con una vida tan básica, sientes compasión por el y quisieras que por su vida pasaran cosas más emocionantes. En el libro no sucede nada interesante. OJO. No sucede nada, pero la manera en la que está contada la historia te mantiene entretenido, el autor tiene una manera de escribir que te mantiene conectado a la historia y hace que algo tan básico como unas personas hablando mientras beben sea algo que te mantenga pegado al libro.Te dan ganas de leer más sobre la básica vida del señor lehmann y sus múltiples decepciones con todos los que lo rodean. Hasta ahora es el único libro que me hecho reír a carcajadas, me refiero a que siempre algo me causa gracia, pero hasta ahí, pero hay una escena donde literal no pude aguantar la risa. Creo que ahí, el libro me ganó.

Ein unterhaltsames und lustiges Buch mit einem sehr einzigartigen Stil. Es hat mich besonders gefreut, dass ich den Humor gut verstehen konnte obwohl Deutsch nur meine zweite Sprache ist. Anderseits geht die Handlung in keine klare Richtung und das Ende war auch ein bischen komisch und uneindeutig.

With no responsibility or sense of short-coming Herr Lehmann has embarked on a career; a career as a bartender. Even when questioned by others he does not see bartending as an interim job, this is something that he has spent time perfecting. With no aim to be an artist or a musician, like many in the bar business, Herr Lehmann is a content twenty-nine year old living in 1980’s Berlin.
After an evening of working and drinking with the boss at the Einfall bar, Herr Lehmann stumbles home through the deserted streets of Kreuzberg. Getting a glimpse of his argumentative character almost straight away it is difficult to tell whether Lehmann is hallucinating in the opening chapter or whether he really is seeing one of the ugliest dogs ever to exist. Unsure on how to proceed with his journey home and with a bottle of whiskey in his pocket Lehmann takes up residency in a small square literally around the corner from his flat: the dog has blocked him in and is refusing to let him pass. So, what happens when you feed a dog alcohol? It falls over drunk!
After this episode you start to question the sanity of this young man; maybe he has had one to many heavy nights out and it is beginning to take its toll.
Trying to restore his bitter hung-over mind, after being woken by his mother phoning, the next morning he heads off to the Markthalle for some brunch. Bumping into his best friend, Karl, who seems to be pulling an extra shift at the establishment he soon finds himself irritated with the scene around him. Sunday Brunching families are not to his taste and he wishes that they would all realise that a bar is not a place to indulge in such niceties. To try and lighten his mood, Karl puts him on a table out of the way and brings him a beer to try and staunch the flow of tripe coming from his mouth. To make matters even worse he decides he is hungry but doesn’t fancy the breakfast menu, instead opting for roast pork. To try and resolve the issue the new chef appears. Katrin is a no-nonsense type of girl that automatically appeals to Lehmann causing him to fluster slightly in his argument. Realising he has fallen in love with her on sight he now needs to try and stop himself revealing his thoughts.
Much of the novel looks at the relationship between these two individuals. The candid nature of Katrin versus the overpowering desire to be in a monogamous relationship by Herr Lehmann leads ultimately to an argument and a break-up. Life, that at one time appeared to be quite rosy, is beginning to develop cracks.
Karl, a budding sculptor, is under pressure to finalise his creations for an exhibition he is to star in. Working nights at the bar and days on his artwork leaves little time for anything else. Sleep deprivation also seems to be a problem for this young man and he takes to spending his after-work hours in the bars drinking to try and overcome the nerves that are beginning to set in. Taking things too far, Karl has stopped sleeping, eating and showering causing friends to worry about him until he finally snaps. Taking control, Herr Lehmann sees his friend break-down in front of him and knows that only one thing will help him – the men in white coats at the hospital are called in.
With his life falling down around him Herr Lehmann begins to question whether everyone that thought bar-tending was a stop-gap job was right. But what will he do now?
When reading the synopsis for this novel and some of the reviews I believed that I would get a detailed insight into life in Berlin just before the Wall was ripped down however, this was not the case. This novel is about a young man, about to turn thirty who begins to question whether he has taken the right path. Whilst based in Berlin, in honesty, the story could have been set anywhere. Little about the area is mentioned or discussed in the novel and the only insight you get into the split between East and West is when Lehmann attempts to visit family across the wall and is turned away. Whilst an easy, short story to read I was slightly disappointed because of the expectations I had personally for the book. It is a well-written story however, from a first time novelist and should not be overlooked if you like contemporary German fiction.

Auf ironische und nüchterne Weise berichtet Herr Lehmann von seinem täglichen Leben.
Herr Lehmann schafft es aber immer wieder eine Situation auf so trockene aber dennoch unglaublich witzige Art und Weise darzustellen, dass das Lesen über alltägliche Dinge zum reinsten Vergnügen werden.
Meine Lieblingsstellen sind die Busfahrt am Ku’Damm und sein Ausflug in den Osten. Er gerät immer wieder an Menschen die ihm das Leben schwer machen wollen. Und das schon bei den kleinsten und harmlosesten Dingen wie einer Busfahrt. Diese Szenen erinnern wirklich an tägliche Situationen denen wir sicherlich alle immer wieder begegnen. Menschen halten sich übertrieben streng an die Vorschriften auch wenn diese Vorschriften in den entsprechenden Situationen einfach nur komplett sinnlos erscheinen. Vorschrift ist Vorschrift und daran muss man sich halten. Auch wenn es zu Lasten des Kunden geht.
Während der Szene in der Herr Lehmanns Eltern zu Besuch in Berlin sind musste ich erstaunlich oft daran denken wie es war als ich für längere Zeit in Berlin gewohnt habe und meine Eltern zu Besuch waren. Mein Vater spricht heutzutage noch von der “Grenze” als wären West- und Ostdeutschland immer noch zwei verschiedene Länder. Ausserdem sind sie die Grossstadt nicht gewöhnt und kommen mit den vielen Eindrücken nicht zurecht.
Wenn man selbst schon einmal in Berlin gewohnt hat oder dauerhaft dort lebt wird man viele Szenen sehr leicht nachvollziehen können und den Ärger mit Herrn Lehmann teilen können weil man sicherlich schon einmal in der gleichen oder einer ähnlichen Lage war. Ich liebe Geschichten über die Teilung Deutschlands und darüber wie es für die Menschen war in West Berlin zu leben und quasi von einer Mauer umgeben zu sein obwohl es ihnen erlaubt war die ganze Welt zu bereisen. Ich war erst 5 Jahre alt als die Mauer fiel und habe deshalb nicht wirklich viel Erinnerung daran. Alles was danach kam und wie beide Teile Deutschlands wieder zusammengewachsen sind habe ich aber genau mitbekommen und finde es heute noch spannend über meine eigene Geschichte zu lernen und Dinge aus verschiedenen Perspektiven zu sehen. Es ist zum Beispiel interessant zu sehen, dass es für West-Berliner gar nicht schlimm war von einer Mauer umgeben zu sein. Ich stelle mir diese Situation schrecklich vor aber alle West Berliner und auch dieses Buch haben mir eindeutig gezeigt, dass auch diese Menschen ein ganz normales Leben in vollkommener Freiheit geführt haben und vom Leben ausserhalb West Berlins nicht viel mitbekommen haben.
Das Kapitel in dem Herr Lehmann einen Ausflug nach Ost Berlin macht zeigt auf gleichzeitig erschreckende aber auch nüchterne und lustige Weise wie die Beamten der DDR Menschen das Wort im Munde umgedreht haben und wie Menschen andere verwirren konnten um dann alles nach ihren eigenen Bedürfnissen auszulegen und im Recht zu sein.
Herr Lehmann ist ein witziges Buch welches sich hervorragend zum entspannen eignet. Es ist so hervorragend trocken geschrieben dass es schon wieder lustig ist. Man muss sich nicht großartig konzentrieren aber es wird einem auch nicht langweilig. Ich kann es kaum erwarten den zweiten Teil der Serie zu lesen und den entsprechenden Film zu schauen.

Meine erste Begegnung mit dem Buch war dessen Verfilmung. Diese hatte mir eher nur mittelmäßig gefallen, was wahrscheinlich hauptsächlich an dem Hauptdarsteller Christian Ulmen lag, den ich überhaupt nicht mag. Bin dann über ein Jahrzehnt später doch noch zu dem Buch gekommen und bin froh darüber. Die Persönlichkeit der Hauptfigur (mit der ich mich auch zum Teil identifizieren kann) ist im Buch wesentlich besser gezeichnet. Und das Buch ist vor allem urkomisch. Ein sehr kurzweiliges Lesevergnügen, das bei mir auch an einigen Stellen ein gewisses Nachdenken über das Leben (oder besser: die adäquate Art, ebenjenes zu leben) geführt hat.

Wer den Film gesehen hat - wie ich - sollte von dem Buch Abstand nehmen. Die Verfilmung ist wirklich sehr werkgetreu; alle Dialoge, selbst die inneren Monologe kennt man schon.

Sólo puedo destacar como positivo algún momento gracioso y las pocas alusiones a la caída del Muro. No me han gustado ni los personajes, ni el estilo del escritor, y además no pasa nada en el libro.
