New York Times bestselling author Jill Shalvis returns to Wildstone with the touching story of finding your place in the world—and the people who make it home.

Piper Manning’s about as tough as they come, she’s had to be. She raised her siblings and they’ve thankfully flown the coop. All she has to do is finish fixing up the lake house her grandparents left her, sell it, and then she’s free.

When a massive storm hits, she runs into a tall, dark and brooding stranger, Camden Reid. There’s a spark there, one that shocks her. Surprising her further, her sister and brother return, each of them holding their own secrets. The smart move would be for Piper to ignore them all but Cam unleashes emotions deep inside of her that she can’t deny, making her yearn for something she doesn’t understand. And her siblings…well, they need each other.

Only when the secrets come out, it changes everything Piper thinks she knows about her family, herself…and Cam. Can she find a way to outrun the demons? The answer is closer than she thinks—just as the new life she craves may have already begun.

Jill Shalvis is a NYT, USA Today, and Amazon Top 100 bestselling author of small-town romance and romcoms, known for big feels, found family, and plenty of shenanigans.

If you love small-town chaos, meddling friends and neighbors, sizzling chemistry, and heroes who fall hard for the one woman they absolutely did not plan on, you’re in the right place. Jill’s books blend laugh-out-loud moments with emotional gut punches, slow-burn tension, and deeply earned happily ever afters.

She writes the stories she loves to read: small-town romance and romantic comedies packed with heart, heat, second chances, grumpy/sunshine sparks, and the kind of found-family vibes that make you want to move right into the pages. Many of her series are perfect for binge-reading, and a number of her books are available in Kindle Unlimited and at major retailers.

When she’s not writing, she’s probably plotting new ways to torture her characters, avoiding laundry, or daydreaming about fictional men and the strong, complicated women who bring them to their knees—and then making them work for it.

READ MY REVIEW ON THE BLOG

The WILDSTONE series by Jill Shalvis is the highlight of my reading time. These stories just warm my heart. In ALMOST JUST FRIENDS Piper meets Camden, who is pretty badass working for the DEA and the coast guard reserve. Piper and her siblings inherited a house and a couple of cottages from their grandparents. After raising her now grown up sister and brother she finally wants to live her own life, sell the property and go back to school. But she didn't see Cam coming, the guy she thought she could have a good time with and then leave. Neither did she realize that her wayward siblings had other plans with their inheritance. And secrets. So many secrets.

Piper was a self confessed control freak, making lists, not giving her trust easily. I loved that I still could follow her thought process although she was so closed off - this usually annoys me. Not Piper - she'd been a mom and caretaker of her siblings and never had the chance to actually live. Then Gavin and Winnie showed up with their baggage and secrets and at first I couldn't understand why they didn't tell Piper what was going on with them but in the end I understood that, like I hated to disappoint my parents so did Gavin and Winnie. I just wish they had trusted her a little bit more.
“You were my mom, my dad, my friend, and oftentimes also my enforcer,” Gavin said. “But you’ve never been my sister. You’ve never let me be your brother. You’ve never let me be there for you, Piper, not once. You need to stop protecting me. I’m grown, I’m good, and that’s all thanks to you. But I want to be siblings. I want to be equals. I want to be the one to help you for a change.”

I adored the relationship Cam and Piper had. They were open and affectionate with one another. I don't know how Jill Shalvis does it but her heroes are among my favorites. They are always such good men with so much heart and humor and a huge capacity to love. Cam had some demons of his own but he felt really balanced and centered to me.

Piper wasn't in it for something long-term at first - whenever her former relationships became too serious she bailed. Adding to that was the fact that she wouldn't be around for much longer in Wildstone. But Cam was the kind of man who would give up everything for the right woman and for the first time in her life Piper learned what it meant to be a priority for someone. I loved that so much for her. She'd sacrificed so much of her life, she deserved happiness and it was so heartwarming to see that she finally got that.
Even when she was an unlovable mess, he looked at her in a way that stole her breath every time. He was her person.

As per usual with the Wildstone books we get three POVs. The third POV in this story belongs to Gavin who stole my heart. When he returns to Wildstone after years he has to make amends with the live he left without a word. CJ didn't make it hard for Gavin and he forgave his ex-lover pretty quickly. Gavin really had changed from the irresponsible boy. He took things seriously and didn't want to get off-track again.

I also loved Winnie and although I thought it was pretty awful to not trust Piper with everything she was a sweet girl. I wish Jill would give us her story. These books are complete stand-alones and the characters aren't connected except for the rare mention, so chances may be slim that we'll see more if Winnie. But, such is life and I'll get over it.

Whenever I'm on the last pages of a Jill Shalvis book my heart is always full. She writes the most satisfying stories that always make me laugh despite addressing serious topics like grief or addiction. Her characters have a warmth to them that make me come back for more of her books. She's a sure bet for me and although this series is shelved as "Women's Fiction" it is heavily focused on the romance. June can't come soon enough. That's when the next in this series, THE SUMMER DEAL, will be released.
“I can’t be the girl who changes her plans for the guy,” she whispered.
“I know.” His hand covered hers. “But I can be the guy who changes his plans for a girl.”

Favorite Quotes:

Look, I’d have gotten to it eventually. But you’ve got to understand, my ability to remember to tell you things is far outweighed by my ability to remember every song lyric from the eighties.

Yes. I had my patience tested. I’m negative.

“Take your time.” He gave Cam a meaningful look. “And I mean that. Women like when you take your time.” Cam’s grimace said he’d maybe finally found the end of his patience. Emmitt held up a hand. “I know, who wants to take advice from your dad, right? But, son, I’ve been on Tinder for two years now, and trust me. I know these things.”

I’m not useless, at least not completely. For instance, I can be used as a really bad example.

… she was arrested at Walmart last week for driving one of those electric carts while drinking wine from a Pringles can in the parking lot. I don’t date felons.

She tried to look half as graceful as he while moving toward him, but instead she probably looked like an elephant fighting its way through a lake made of peanut butter.

My Review:

This amusing and engaging tale was laced with complicated characters, loads of family drama, obnoxious siblings, snarky banter, a swoony sexy soldier, and clever levity. This was a considerably more tense and angsty read than I was expecting but thankfully the humor and sizzling romance balanced out all the stress and HEAs were generously spread across the land. Sigh, I do loves me some Jill Shalvis.

Almost Just Friends is book four in the Wildstone series by Jill Shalvis. I read the first three books in this series ages ago. I recently saw that the series was put into Kindle Unlimited so I decided it was time to jump back in so grabbed this fourth book. Sadly, by the time I got to it, she took the series back out of KU! Still, I’m so glad I read this. I don’t know what it is about these books that make me feel so much.

Piper Manning is thirty years old and is an EMT! She lives on a one acre property with a house and some smaller cabins that was left to her and her two younger siblings when her grandmother passed away. After losing her parents at age thirteen, Piper immediately had to grow up. She has spent her entire life raising her siblings, Gavin and Winnie. But they are grown now and it’s time for her to follow her own dream. But you know what always happens when you think you have a plan!

“You’re the one always fixing everyone’s life, everyone’s but your own, of course. But even the Fixer needs help sometimes.”

Camden Hayes is thirty two years old. Cam has come back to Wildstone, CA to repair his relationship with his dad. He never counted on Piper. As soon as he met her, he knew she was someone important. What he didn’t know until much later is that she was the missing piece to his life he had been waiting for.

It all started with a huge storm, then the return of Piper’s siblings to Wildstone. Everyone has secrets they are holding, all have broken pieces of themselves they are trying to work on. But what they all find is family, support, and love. But Piper had plans and none of this had been a part of it. Now she has to figure out what her future looks like now. And if she is willing to trust enough to open her heart to a love she never knew she wanted.

This really was such a beautiful book. I loved that there was so much more going on than just the relationship between Piper and Cam. I felt invested in all of their lives. These are real, flawed characters who fought for their happy endings and deserved every minute of them.

Almost Just Friends by Jill Shalvis is the fourth book of the Wildstone series. This contemporary romance series is told from multiple points of view. As with most romance series each book has changed the main characters so each can be read and understood as a standalone if choosing to do so.

This fourth book of the series introduces Piper Manning who now at thirty is really just getting to a point she can begin her own life. As a child Piper and her two siblings lost their parents at an early age and with Piper being the oldest she ended up responsible for her younger brother and sister. Once Piper finished fixing up the lake house she and her siblings had inherited she plans to sell and go off to school.

When out with a friend Piper meets Camden Reid and while the sexy stranger interests her she isn’t the type for a one night stand. After heading home though Piper decides to check on her elderly neighbor with a storm in the area and Piper finds Camden is actually his son. Just as Piper and Camden begin to get to know one another though Piper’s siblings come crashing home with problems of their own.

Almost Just Friends was such a lovely tale that not only focuses on romance but encompassed the families surrounding the main couple and all of the issues within. Piper and her siblings only had one another in life and while their lives weren’t perfect they showed that with the strength of their family they could overcome their issues. And the slow burning romance between Piper and Cam was one that was worth the wait. Great story overall.

I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.

I love my family, but I don’t like them sometimes…

I’ve just come back from a 10-day cruise with my family. Not just my little family, my whole bloody family. There were 15 of us in total, setting sail to celebrate my parents 50th wedding anniversary. Congratulations, Mum and Dad on surviving and conquering 50 years of wedded bliss. Love you both so much and I’m proud to be your daughter.

BUT 10 DAYS STUCK ON A BOAT…BLOODY HELL, THAT WAS HARD WORK!

I love them… but, geez, I don’t like them sometimes. Family dynamics are a wonderful thing. One day we’re all happy, happy, joy, joy (that could have been the wine talking). The next day, there are tears, tantrums and screaming matches (too many wine days, not enough water days). I guess it’s been a wee while since I’ve spent days with my sisters and parents. We love, trust and care for each other which gives us the freedom to be honest, straight-forward and even a little blunt. Honestly, a lot of it was a blast and I loved spending time with my family but I’ve never been so bloody happy to be home from a holiday.

It cracked me up that again, Jill Shalvis has written something so relevant to me and my life. Almost Just Friends is all about family dynamics. I recognised the bossy elder sister who lectures instead of listens. I know that little sister who is determined to be strong and independent… with a little help from family. I may also be somewhat like the middle “peacekeeper” who has been known to go off the rails but never meant to be a burden.

Now, all these traits do not define us (the characters and my siblings) as we can and are so much more. The bossiness comes from love and a need to see their family happy and content. The need to show her independence is from an acceptance that she can do anything because of the love and support at their back. That peacekeeper has seen some tough times so now we want everyone we love to avoid the tough times and lead their best lives.

Almost Just Friends is not just about the family dynamics, though. This story is about a woman who has put aside her wants and needs to raise her siblings. The journal she keeps was her way to stay on track and plan for the future. Piper notes what she hopes to achieve and ticks her successes and rewrites what still needs to happen. Things are finally getting to a stage where she thinks things are going smooth…ish and now Piper can start her own adventure.

Of course, when it comes to family, nothing is ever smooth and of course, the love of your life… I mean, the man of the moment, gets to witness every messy detail.

Camden’s younger brother Rowan died, and the last words Cam said to him were in anger. Now, Cam is trying to fix the mistakes of his past and find his own piece of happiness. Days after his arrival home to visit with his dad, a storm blows in changing everything. One woman is the calm in the middle of the storm. Piper challenges him to be better and makes it easy to laugh again. She’s not looking for a relationship but with the sparks they set off in each other, Cam’s sure she’s his permanent light.

I am convinced that Jill Shalvis writes for me alone. It’s like she knows what I want to read when I want to read it. Almost Just Friends had the perfect mix of humour, emotion and conflict, with a healthy dose of sexy times added for my pleasure. There were times that I found the simultaneous family fireworks (real-life and book life) helped me get through the dramas. It’s nice to know that I’m not the only one who loves their family while also wanting to murder them.

If you’re a fan of Jill Shalvis, this is one of her best and if you haven’t tried her yet… DO IT! If you’ve followed the Wildstone series, this is a great addition to the series, if you haven't started it yet… DO IT! I highly recommend giving Almost Just Friends a try.

A small town romance is always my go to pick up. When I pick up Almost Just Friends, it really takes me by surprise. This book is really really good. Delicious even, just like Cam.

Cam is the reason why I love this book very much. He is so protective and acts like a glie while Piper trying to hold it together. He is such a swoon worthy hero.

Piper is kick ass heroine. She sacrifices her future to be the parent for her sibling. She is all about responsible. This is a story about family and love. With many secrets and twists on the story, the whole book shines.

The character development is slow but it really builds up nicely.

Overall this is a perfect book while on isolation.

4 - "We're family..." Stars!

Almost Just Friends takes up back to Wildstonefor another story set around a dysfunctional family, trying to make the best of everything. Well it’s actually two families; the Mannings and the Hayes. But as the book progresses you come to see that they may not be blood related but through all of the secrets and omissions of the truth they are tied together in more ways than each individual initially thinks. Each character is part of a sum, that adds up to the whole.

She wanted to be wanted… She wanted to feel something. She wanted passion and hunger and desire, but more that any of that, she wanted someone to feel those things for her…

The story mainly plays out through three POV’s, Piper, Cam and Gavin. Piper and Gavin are siblings, Piper being the eldest and primary care giver as they were growing up, with younget sister Winne completing the trio. Cam and his father live next door to the family, and as I said he and his father as well as the Manning siblings are connected in more ways than one as the story progresses, although the bulk of the book focusses on Piper and Cam’s blossoming relationship, something that has more than a few hurdles to overcome and not just from their own hangups but of those around them as well.

"You’ve got so much love to give… It’s hard to see you closed off."

Gavin brings up the rear with his POV, returning home has it’s own sets of challenges for the middle sibling, mainly owning up to his own mistakes, and trying to rebuild bridges between him and the one man he has ever truly felt anything for.

"You’re quite the distraction…"

Despite the heavier tropes in play, this book wasn’t a struggle to read, although I will say that lack of communication between the adults and the omission of truth in relation to certain subject are things that generally start to get on my nerves normally. However, the author interjected a lot of her usual humour and banter in the story that held back the usual frustration I start to feel.

You also get two for the price of one in regards to romantic entanglements as well, although I have to ask the question that if you are going to start giving same sex relationships in your books more focus, should you also give the bedroom side of things as much page time as you do with your heterosexual couples? Because that was not the case in this one, and the closed-door aspect for one, and the full disclosure for the other stuck out like a sore thumb for me. Not in a bad way, but it was still something that made me pause for a minute or two, because if you are giving it all the bells and whistles for one couple, shouldn’t the other be afforded the same courtesy?

"Anywhere. Anytime. For the rest of my life. I’m all yours."

I look forward to reading more from the author in 2020!

Jill Shalvis writes realistic characters almost flawlessly and her books never fail to draw me in. Almost Just Friends was no different and I was captivated from the beginning. Piper was trying to be the strong sibling for her brother and sister, the one that took care of them when there was no one else. But that meant putting her own life on hold and now she's stuck with only her plans for something more. That is until Cam comes to Wildstone for his father and her dreams start looking like a reality.

I loved getting all of the different parts to this story. You had Piper trying to figure out what her siblings were hiding, finding her courage to let someone help, and accepting her feelings for Cam. It was emotional but also very sweet and I found it really fun to read. They might have been imperfect characters and sometimes let their flaws get the best of them, but together they made the perfect story. Piper and Cam were both working through some things but they were able to let their guards down for each other and I thought that level of trust was amazing.

Overall, this is definitely a book I recommend reading. It's fun, and beautifully sweet, and will leave a smile on your face. It's the fourth book in the Wildstone series but can be read as a standalone in my opinion.

Title: Almost Just Friends
Series: Wildstone #4
Author: Jill Shalvis
Release date: January 21, 2020
Cliffhanger: no
Genre: women's fiction

Even when she was an unlovable mess, he looked at her in a way that stole her breath every time. He was her person.

This is the story of two families and how they learn to overcome tragedies and challenges together. Piper is the oldest sibling of the Mannings, and soon after their parents' untimely death, she quickly stepped into the role of raising her brother and sister. Ill equipped to deal with the emotional wounds they were collecting, the family has been slowly rotting at their roots. Pushing down feelings of grief, guilt, and resentment, there was no healing for anyone. On the outside, everyone appears to have their lives under control, but on the inside, everything is one step away from ruin.

Piper is stubborn, messy, anti-social, and bossy. She also has the most giving heart of anyone you'll ever meet, she's tenacious when it comes to things that matter, and would carry the weight of the world on her own shoulders if it meant her family was lighter because of it. Through the years she has sacrificed a lot, but now a new path is finally within her grasp. Selling the family home will allow her to go back to school and pursue a different career path somewhere new. Of course things don't go at all as planned. Winnie and Gavin arrive in town for a visit and it doesn't take long before things start to unravel.

Secrets are a huge part of the conflict in the story. For me, I think that the Mannings' worst fault was their inability to be honest and communicate with one another. Many times I was yelling through the screen of my kindle, wishing I could penetrate some sense into their thick skulls. I don't think Piper was given enough credit by her brother and sister because they always feared the worst possible reaction from her. Rather than come clean, they all became expert level at ignoring the elephant in the room. This didn't seem fair to me at all, because despite her penchant for bossiness, she was never anything but unconditionally supportive. I would say that was my one frustration with the story, the amount of time they spent dancing around the truth and keeping her in the dark out of fear. Winnie also pulled Cam unwillingly into her deception and because of his sense of honor he felt obligated to keep silent.

Camden Reid is in Wildstone to spend time with his father during some down time from his job in the DEA and the Coast Guard Reserve. Like Piper, his family is broken and currently a big hot mess. Growing up, he had to deal with his parents' divorce, his mother's mental illness, and now he must find a way to build a new relationship with his father as they grieve together. A sudden loss in the family has him reeling with devastation. Not only is it bad timing to be meeting Piper at this point with both of their lives so messy, she's commitment shy even on a good day. Naturally, they both try to ignore, then fight their attraction for one another. There are a million reasons why pursuing a romance couldn't work, leading to more heartbreak. Cam shows her with his actions that he's there to be her partner. To be there for her to lean on when she feels lost and tired, something she hasn't experienced in a very long time. She's so used to trying to solve everything on her own, that she doesn't quite know what to do with it.

There were multiple threads to the story that weave together cohesively into one. It alternates between Piper, Winnie, Gavin, and Cam and they learn how to be a strong family unit. I love Jill Shalvis' women fiction titles because they have a heavy element of romance, and this was no exception. We also got her trademark humor to keep things light as the Mannings and Reids tackled things like grief, recovering from addiction, and unplanned pregnancy. This was a great addition to the Wildstone series and one I would recommend wholeheartedly.

This is such a terrific book on so many levels. Is is an emotional, funny, complex and thought provoking, family drama. The romantic elements had just the right touch in what could have been a heavy book. All the characters were well drawn out and added to the compelling story. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Almost Just Friends is the fourth book in the Wildstone series, however, it can be read on its own. In this latest offering from Jill Shalvis, we meet Piper Manning an EMT. Piper is completing her plans to go to college. Now that her siblings have all grown up, and she is no longer responsible for them, she can now live her life on her own terms. However, things rarely go as planned as Piper would discover, when her siblings returned home with secrets, which had the potential to turn her world upside down. If that was not enough, her neighbour’s sexy son would evoke feelings she feared and never thought possible. For a woman who bases her life on lists, this spells trouble.

Shalvis weaved an entertaining story which, featured complicated characters. I enjoyed every moment getting to know the characters, who were strong yet flawed. These were persons you wanted the best for and hoped they would get their act together.

This book featured not one but two romances which I loved. I am not a fan of MM romance, but I found myself enjoying the second chance romance between Gavin (Piper’s brother) and CJ.

The connection between Piper and Cam was both sweet and hot. I loved the slow burn and the undeniable chemistry that burned between the couples. I found myself invested in both relationships and had my fingers crossed hoping they would overcome the obstacles that could destroy their happiness.

Of all the characters in the story, Camden’s dad was my favourite. He was funny and charismatic, which added to depth to the story.

It was a pleasure watching the characters grow throughout the story. They claimed their mistakes and attempted to correct them, which resulted in healing and forgiveness for all who were involved.

Drama and angst was prominent in this story, however, they were balanced out by the humour and all the happy events that transpired.

Conclusion/Recommendation
Almost Just Friends is a story about healing, forgiveness, over coming fears and self-discovery. If you enjoy contemporary romance, you will love this book.

This is the fourth Wildstone book, but don’t worry it works as a standalone. Piper Manning is finally making plan to go to college after raising her siblings. She’s been fixing up the lake house they called home that their grandparents left them. She plans to give her siblings their share and use hers for tuition…and then they come home.

Then there is Camden Reid the distraction next door. Suddenly life is complicated and all of Piper’s lists and plans are complicated! 😍

Gads Shalvis delivered all the elements I love in a good romance. A tall, dark, brooding hero. An adorkable, caring, strong heroine. Both flawed, with wicked chemistry, delicious banter and melt my heart moments.

I loved the slow build, the friendship, the slow confessions and the undeniable chemistry. It felt genuine, and I became completely caught up in their story.

And as if that weren’t enough, she had to give us the sibling stories! We get a second chance romance, share a loss and new beginnings. Camden’s Dad was a hoot and the family drama included food fights…it delivered all the feels from laughter to tears.

Shalvis offered diversity, included addiction, unexpected changes and finding happiness. And to the list makers, she gave us a heroine to cheer for! This review was originally posted at Caffeinated Reviewer

Perfectly imperfect people finding their HEA in a world that had a lot against them. But in the end family is everything.

Almost Just Friends was a heartfelt read from the get-go, gluing me to the cast's plight to find happiness and acceptance. All the while they are working through the scars life has left on them and still keeping a sense of humor during the journey.

Relateable, heart-felt and with the perfect amount of humor, Shalvis out did herself in this fantastic read.

I received this ARC copy of Almost Just Friends from William Morrow. This is my honest and voluntary review. Almost Just Friends is set for publication Jan. 21, 2020.

I just loved this book! Jill Shalvis is an author that I tend to turn to when I am looking for a fun, romantic read. Her books are reliably good and this book was no exception. Once I started reading this book, I found it hard to put down. This is the fourth book in the Wildstone series but each of the books in the series read as stand-alone novels so don't hesitate to jump into the series anywhere! I had a great time with this story and am thrilled that I decided to give it a try.

Piper takes care of people. She took care of her younger brother and sister after their parents and grandparents died. She works as an emergency medical technician where she works to rescue those in need of help. She has also made a habit of checking in on her neighbor who has been diagnosed with diabetes and trying to get him to eat better. The only person Piper doesn't take great care of is herself but she is finally ready to go after her dreams and get the degree that she has always wanted just as soon as she sells her grandparents' property.

Cam is used to taking care of people too. He works as a DEA agent and also is in the Coast Guard Reserves. He has a take-charge attitude and seems to be able to handle just about any situation. He feels responsible for making sure that everyone is safe. He is home to visit his dad, who happens to be the neighbor that Piper checks up on daily.

I felt like Piper and Cam were a great pair! From the moment that they met at the very beginning of the book, I felt a strong connection between them which only got stronger the more that I read. Cam never seemed to be phased by some of the crazy that was happening in Piper's life. They really seemed to understand each other and I loved their chemistry. These two just seemed to fit together perfectly.

The other characters in this book were equally amazing. Piper's siblings, Gavin and Willow, had some pretty major things going on in their lives. This book gave us not just one romance, but two! Gavin and CJ were such a great pair and I loved that their romance was such an important part of this story. Willow's life is at a crossroads with some major changes ahead. It was fun to watch her work to make changes and deal with some of the things that she has been through. Cam's dad was a fun character that also added to the story.

I would highly recommend this book to others. I think that this is this book is my favorite book in the Wildstone series yet. I fell in love with these characters and couldn't wait to see things work out for them. I cannot wait to read more of this amazing author's work.

I received a review copy of this book from William Morrow Paperbacks.

Initial Thoughts
This was really good. Probably a 4.5 star read for me. I am going with 4 for now but might round up after I have some time to process the book. I loved the characters in this book and it was nice that we got to see each of them grow over the course of the story. Cam and Piper were meant for each other and had really strong chemistry. Everyone in this book is dealing with some pretty tough issues and they all handled them in their own way. I loved that there were two romances told in this wonderful book.

I know I have been doing a really good job of hiding it, but I love the Wildstone series from Jill Shalvis, and Almost Just Friends was another great installment. Once again, I really liked that each chapter began with a quote, and both the characters and the story were incredibly touching. I loved Piper's strength and tenacity, and I can't even imagine having to raise any siblings let alone 2. I could fully relate to her need for lists, the loss of her parents, and so much more, and Shalvis always has the most relatable and real characters. This is a romance, but there is also plenty of family drama, and I really appreciated the fact that this book shows family and life are messy, and the best thing we can do is to not be afraid to lean on each other in hard times. I was frustrated with Winnie quite a bit, especially when it came to her mistrust of Piper. I mean this sister of yours basically raised you, why aren't you telling her things? But with no struggles between the siblings, this wouldn't have been the same book, and I liked how everything wrapped up in the end.

I have listened to this entire series on audio so far and am consistently impressed with the narrator, Erin Mallon. There was a different narrator for the first two books before she took over, and while it threw me off at first, I now couldn't imagine it any other way. Mallon ended up being the perfect choice, and I hope they continue to stick with her for every single book of the series. Even though I have been reading it in order, every single book is a standalone with only the occasional mention of previous characters. I really do wish we would get more cameos, but this does make it easy for readers to jump in at any point of the series. Every book Shalvis writes is full of love, heart, laughter, and tears, and Almost Just Friends was no exception. I always love the setting of Wildstone and I'm glad that is something she does keep consistent to this series. If you are in the mood for a quick read, something to tug at your heartstrings, and an adorable romance then Almost Just Friends is the book you want!

Piper Manning has always been the grownup, of her friends and of her family; she's the mom of the group, she's even embraced the nickname of Grandma. She lives by her lists, they keep her life neat and organized and her in control. Celebrating her birthday out sounds like the worst idea ever, especially with a storm blowing in, but her friend has left her with a mysterious stranger and for once she's embracing the lack of control. The storm turns out to be a wild one though, getting cats stuck in tree, leaving Piper covered in mud, and a very handsome Camden Reid stuck at her secluded cabin. With the morning light comes clarity and Piper's two wayward siblings. Piper can see her dreams going out the window, but Piper's sibling and Camden all know something she doesn't and the next few weeks are going to change all of their lives forever.

Piper is just as her siblings describe her; complicated, closed off, and a fixer. She's taken her role as guardian to her siblings like it's a full time career, spending her days as an EMT taking care of others and her nights making lists to ensure her brother succeeds in his career, her sister finishes college, and her family's property can sell. She can finally see her dreams of going to school becoming a reality, but when everyone returns to the small lake town at once it leaves her really questioning if her dreams will need to remain on hold forever. While I have never been the guardian of my siblings, I can so relate to Piper's feelings about her dreams and the steps required to achieve them. She's a mess of stress and worry and I could feel that coming from her as I read from her perspective. Camden is the handsome new guy, though it turns out he's got a tie to the small town too. His story is one of strength, family struggles, and grief, he can relate to Piper if she would let him in. The novel focuses on these two making their brief fling work while they each deal with the complications within their families.

I spent an obscene amount of time crying over this novel, there is so much more to this book than meets the eye. These characters and their stories, oh my heart. I was so in love with Piper and Camden, just as a romance it would've been a great novel, but Jill Shalvis knows how to really make readers feel like they've entered into an entire universe. The setting, the secondary characters, and the separate story lines about Piper's family and Camden's brother just made for a heartfelt, relatable read. Together and with their families they learn how life's lessons, though sometimes painful, can bring the greatest blessings with them. It's about slowing down, paying attention, listening, and letting love in. Like all of Jill Shalvis' novels, Almost Just Friends is another well-written, beautiful romance, one that I highly recommend.

I read this book right though to the very end in one sitting. Family and all that entails is the heart of this book. The good the bad and the ugly. Secrets and all. The romance was so good Cam was swoon worthy. Cam is every women's dream man. I HIGHLY recommend this 4.5 star book.

Listen, I love a fluff book as much as the next person. I don’t need a book to be 100% realistic to enjoy it and can take a lot of nonsense. For whatever reason, I just cannot stop rolling my eyes at the dialogue in this one. I cannot buy that the main character goes from zero to making out in one solid evening, lets the guy act like an overprotective knight and knows the next day with 100% certainty that he would make her life great. I won this in a Goodreads giveaway so have been trying very hard to finish and leave a decent review but I have 868,000 unread books on my shelf and have got to move on. I think 120 pages is far enough to know that you are not the right reader for a book.

I was so looking forward to this book. I love the author’s other series Heatbreaker Bay, and Lucky Harbor series is cute. This Wildstone series is leaving a lot to be desired. My first beef is that I know I have read a similar book by this author before, the protagonist wants to chase her own dreams, go to school, and get a real career, but her stupid needy family does nothing but drag her down (mother, and sister? I can’t remember the name of the book either). I am irritated that the author recycled the story, but this one is different in that we get more of the whiny younger siblings’ story and almost no story from the main characters.

I do not expect any complicated plot or great literature in these books, but I actively disliked the main characters (what little personality they showed) and hated the side characters.

*SPOILER ALERT*

The younger brother and sister were raised by Piper, the main character. All they do is whine about how their lives are screwed up, (recovering drug addict and an unplanned pregnancy) and now Piper has to fix everything for them. They want to take over her home where they all grew up and open a B&B.

This sounds like just a fantastic idea- two siblings in tiny town with zero experience (seriously, the youngest sister is watching YouTube videos, so that makes her an expert in all home repair- it is laughable). Never mind Piper’s 12 hour days at work, in addition to constant upkeep of the building in the hopes she can sell and split the money with her worthless siblings, and finally go to school to fulfill her dreams.

One of the only interesting parts were the relationship between Gavin and CJ. They were best friends and each other’s first love in high school. Now they are reconnecting as adults, despite some rocky history. Let us read more about them! Why does CJ have such trust issues? Did Gavin experiment with drugs as a teen? They actually had some tension in their relationship- let us explore it!

I had to look up the main characters Piper and Cam’s names; they were so unmemorable to me. Why was everyone constantly hating on Piper for carrying around a journal/day planner? What was wrong with making lists? As a list-maker, I take great offense to this. She was the only one holding this terrible family together, the only responsible one, and they berate her for keeping a roof over their heads, buying all the groceries, making money at a respectable job- the nerve! I do not understand why she can’t just go to school. Has she never heard of student loans? Her program is only 2 years. She could work and go to school. This is not the end of the world!

Cam was utterly boring. His scenes with Piper were instantly forgettable. There was no tension, no build-up, I do not believe for one minute that they would get together much less be interested in each other. Piper is crazy-pants for running into a complete stranger’s arms (who is sleeping on her couch??!!) because she is scared during a thunderstorm.

This book feels like the author was contractually obligated to publish something, and she threw darts at a board to piece together plot point of different stories that in no way made sense together.

First responder/paramedic
College drop-out
Drug addict
Unplanned pregnancy
Survivor guilt
Dead parents
Special ops, Coast Guard AND DEA investigator (one person! This is insane!)
Crotchety old man neighbor who is sick and needs help
Dead brother
Big storm
Fear of water, fear of storms (same person, who lives on a LAKE)
Not one but TWO surprise birthday parties (in the same book! For TWO different people)
B&B
Lake house
Marina

I do not recommend, not even for some light escapism. The story and characters are too frustrating.

This is the fourth book in the Wildstone series and I jumped in here and was totally fine, but I did immediately order the first three books in the series because I absolutely loved this one! It was the perfect mixture of humor and heart, romance and family drama, it had a little bit of everything for me and I just adored it.

The characters in this were everything for me, they were authentic and relatable and really felt like real people, JS brought them to life. Piper was my favorite with office supply loving heart but her brother was a close second. Actually, I really liked all of the Mannings, they’re a messy, flawed family that wormed their way into my heart. Besides the super interesting family dynamics between the three Manning siblings there was a great romance brewing between Piper and Camden with so much heat, chemistry and a side of snarky humor, what more could a girl want?! Absolutely nothing if you’re me, I seriously freaking loved this book and am SO excited to go back and read the others in the series!

Are you a JS fan? Have you read this series?

Another winner in this sister oriented series with a lot of emotions, real-life problem & romance...
I heard many impressive things about this book but instead of reading this one; I binge the entire series and I am not sorry.

Just like with Mick from book one, the hero in this book- Camden takes the show here too.
This book deals with Piper and the life of her two siblings which she raised and what happens in a woman's life when she has to accept the fact that eventually, she needs to put herself first. Besides Piper's life, her brother and sister have their own bag of issues.

I enjoyed reading this book!!
If you love small-town romance/books centered on family/heartwarming reads - this is a book for you!!

4,5 stars

Piper Manning has put her life and dreams aside to raise her brother and sister after the loss of their parents. She has one last thing to do until her life is her own - and that includes getting the coveted college degree as a physicians assistant. She needs to do a lot of work on the lake house left to her by her grandparents. Once she is able to sell it, she can go back to school.

When Piper runs into a man during a big storm, named Camden Reid, sparks fly right off. However, she certainly has no time for romance. To further complicate things, her brother and sister come back to the lake house needing her help yet again. Piper has always been selfless, so what will she do now?

Jill Shalvis is a favorite author of mine so I am glad I got the chance to read this book. I quickly learned that this wasn't a cut-and-dried romance. Boy meets girl. Fall in Love. Major conflict. Happily ever after. Instead, both Piper and Cam had heavy baggage. Piper's sibling brought heavy baggage to Piper's feet. These things are part of the reason that this book was a really sensitive read that stressed the importance of family and love. Yes, readers got the happy ending, but the journey towards it was a rather nice ride.

Many thanks to William Morrow Paperbacks and to Edelweiss for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

This is a love story between Piper and Cam, but you have to add Piper's brother and sister and Cam's father and recently deceased brother. Piper has raised her siblings since her parents died years ago. Piper is an EMT and takes care of everyone, but has no time for herself. A quick easy read.

My Thoughts:

Almost Just friends was a wonderful story about friendship, family, love, and life. Piper Manning lost her parents at the tender age of thirteen, and came with her younger siblings, Gavin and Winnie, to live with her grandparents in Wildstone. She took on the burdens and responsibilities of raising them and was more like a mother than a sibling. Piper is looking forward to selling the house and cottages on Rainbow Lake; that her family inherited from her grandparents, so that she can move away to Colorado, and go to college to become a P.A. Piper longs for adventure and a life of her own, now that both of her siblings flew the nest many years ago.

However all of Piper's plans are interrupted when Gavin and Winnie show up, and plan on staying as a family at their grandparents house. Both have heavy burdens to bare, and secrets that they are keeping from their older sister. To top it off, Piper meets the sexy, handsome, and caring, Cam who happens to be on leave from the Coast Guard, and is visiting his father, and Piper's neighbor, Emmitt, after the loss of Cam's younger brother. Things have now gotten complicated for Piper, and she just might discover there is plenty of adventure to be had in her small little hometown of Wildstone...

I loved Piper. She reminded me of myself. She carried her bullet journal/planner everywhere, and was obsessed with making lists for everything. She cracked me up with her bucket list, and secret secret bucket list! She loved her siblings more than anything, but she could come off a little bossy and judgmental, as far as they were concerned.

Cam rarely smiled when Piper first met him, but she made him happy. He saw what a treasure Piper was, and he made her feel wanted, appreciated, and seen. Cam was such a sexy manly man. He looked out for Piper, and was an excellent listener. He helped her to have fun, and relax. These two connected, because they had both had challenges in their lives, where they could relate to one another. Plus the chemistry between them was sizzling!

I loved the secondary cast of characters as well. Emmitt, Cam's father, was hilarious! I loved learning about Gavin, and he had his own romance as well. Winnie was going through a lot, but I loved her strength, resilience, and courage to pick herself up, and become the mature adult that she wanted to be.

My favorite aspects of this story were the humor that was infused all the way throughout the story, as well as being able to relate to it when it came to loss, mourning, and learning how to live again. The two romances were fun, but my absolute favorite moments were when everyone was together, whether they were bickering or having a good time! If you are looking for a story that will have you laughing aloud, make you happy, and is real and relatable to life, and experiencing loss, and love; as well as needing to learn resilience, you should pick up Almost Just Friends by Jill Shalvis!

Every book in this Wildstone series , has some seriously funny parts (which I always love) and some honestly real, personal issues for the characters to handle. There doesn't seem to be a strong connection between the books other than the town. (This means you don't really have to read the series in order)

Almost Just Friends is centered around a family of three adult children. Piper is the oldest and has almost raised her two younger siblings after both their parents and then grandparents died. She follows a tried and true method of stuffing down her feelings and not getting involved to keep from getting hurt.

The main story is about Piper and how she both reaches personal goals AND a romance through her character growth.  Her two siblings, have issues and secrets with their lives.  The side stories about her siblings added depth to her character progression but geez, it would all be simpler if they just talked to each other!

Cam has his own rut where he has been in the military and on his own for years, and previously lived with his Mom before she died.  His brother lived with his dad and now due to a variety of events, he is on leave visiting his dad. They live next door and there's a bunch of connections there as Cam's brother and Piper's sister were best friends.  Cam is getting to know his dad (and he's a trip!)

There are plenty of bad decisions made in early adulthood on display, as well as people growing up and making a better life.   I found the sweet, funny, hot romance here as well as the realistic aspects of what I like to call life fiction.

Narration:
I have been listening to more books with the narrator recently.  She does have some distinct male and female voices but sometimes I think a voice is someone from another book.  I really enjoy the husky quality of her male voices, almost more than her female voices.  I was able to  listen at my normal 1.5x speed.
