Amy Tintera started writing novels as a kid during her middle school science classes, which probably explains why she has always been very bad at science. She is now the author of several novels for young adults, including Reboot, a Kids Indie Next pick and YALSA Quick Pick for Reluctant Readers, the Ruined series, The Q, and All These Monsters, a YALSA Best Fiction for Young Adults selection. Her novels have been translated into 16 languages and sold into more than 20 territories.

She has a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Texas A&M and a master’s degree in media arts/screenwriting from Emerson College. She worked as a talent agency assistant in Hollywood before becoming an author. Raised in Austin, Texas, she frequently sets her novels in the Lone Star state, but she now lives in Los Angeles, where there's far less humidity, but not nearly enough Tex-Mex.

Her first novel for adults, Listen for the Lie, will be published March 5, 2024 by Celadon/Macmillan.

Reread 2022 - I bumped this from 4.5 to a 4 Star. I still like it but I’m trading in this hardback and the second book hardback. If they put them in a kindle sale I will get them. My library doesn’t even have the second one but I don’t feel like reading it. Just trying to let go of more physical things

I painted my edges with metallic purple paint. I used a bigger brush, not thinking about it, and got some of the outer pages but I don’t care? It’s a beauty. Have metallic Gold for second book.

Omg!! I didn’t even know about this book!! I loved it so much and ready for the next one. I love Team Seven and EDAN IS EVERYTHING!

Amy Tintera is one of my favourite authors, and this is her best book yet. I couldn’t put it down, and I’m desperate for the sequel. From its badass heroine to its heart-stopping action, from its totally immersive world to the deeply-felt personal story at the heart of this book, All These Monsters is something fresh and new, and it kept me up late into the night. I literally had to force myself to go to bed at 1am, because my baby wakes up early (no respect for late night binge reading!) but I was back to it the very next naptime -- I got through it in two addictive sittings.

Update: 12/12/20. I started the book as an audiobook until around 56%. I got distracted by the new Taylor Swift album and forgot my library hold expired yesterday... but I'm also really hooked and couldn't wait till I could borrow the book again, so I'm continuing to read it as an e-arc. Once I can borrow the audiobook again, I'll be relistening to the last 44% to make sure that anything significant I comment on hasn't changed.

--

I started this audiobook simply hoping for a quick and easy read to help me out of my funk, but found myself quickly connecting and feeling for Clara. In some ways, it fits the beats of a supernatural monster-hunting book but it's also much more.

All These Monsters follows seventeen-year-old Clara. She is a half-white, half-Mexican who comes from a working class background and a dysfunctional home. Clara lives in an alternative timeline of Texas, where monsters called Scrabs began popping up around the world in the 2010. In a state that's never seen a Scrab attack, Clara has a more immediate danger: her father. When a chance to escape her abusive home by joining an international fight team against Scrabs, Clara takes it-- even though it may cost her life.

My favorite part of this story is undoubtedly the characters. Clara. Edan. Grayson. Madison. Julian. Lawrence. They're complex and compelling. Some are compassionate. Some are messy. Some are burdened by their past. Others by expectations-- their own and others. They surprised me. They made me cry.

There's a lot of satisfying and heartbreaking heart-to-heart moments. For example, I almost cried listening to the scene around 20% between Clara and Julian. It was simple but his decision made a big difference. I did cry at several other scenes towards the end of the book. One of the scenes with Madison and Clara around 80%. God, that scene broke me.

However, I also enjoyed that these were balanced out with monster-hunting action, sweet and wholesome moments, and humor to lighten the mood. The tone was mostly somber due to the serious topics it tackles, though, so I did have to pace my reading. It is not a book I recommend read in one sitting.

I have too many spoiler-y thoughts on the romance so I will only say this: Tintera is deliberate in what she includes and how she includes it.

The world-building is interesting but underdeveloped. It considers variations on how a monster infestation would affect people's lives, regional differences in monsters, and some geopolitical effects. There's still a lot of questions I have about scrabs, but at this point, I'm reading less for the monster killing and more for Clara and Team Seven.

My main criticism is the ableist language (e.g. stup*d, m*ron). These words were primarily used by Clara's parents or herself against her. I think it could have been possible to indicate the message of disdain and dislike for her without using these words. YA has made a lot of strides in being more inclusive, but more work still needs to be done regarding ableism.

Overall, I felt for this book more than I thought I would. I expected Monster Buster Club vibes and instead I got a story that made me tear up multiple times, get angry (for the characters), and cry twice. I kept stopping every few pages to highlight quotes, bookmark scenes, digest, and laugh. So yeah, I really liked this book.

I highly recommend this book, so long as you're aware of the trigger warnings and think you can handle it. It is heavy. It is raw. But it is worth the read.

Tragic. This book is about 10 years too late and even then it would have been mediocre. It reads like every other carbon copy of The Hunger Games/Divergent from the early 2010’s. This book has it all: boring and predictable storyline, unimaginative prose, flat and cliche characters, zero world building, cringe dialogue and an unrealistic romance with a love triangle. Just awful. I’m confident that I will never read a book by Tintera again.

Well, I’m always here for an Amy book and I think I always will be.

I really loved Clara. She’s smart and resilient and doesn’t realize how strong she is. There are a good amount of characters here and they’re (almost) all delightful and yet somehow this was still Clara’s story.

Plot wise, it’s good. I thought the fight scenes might get a bit repetitive, but the different settings and situations were a good variety. It kept me guessing in a way I didn’t expect and while there wasn’t quite a cliffhanger ending, I’m really glad to have the next book to read.

Overall, this was a fast paced and character driven story. I can’t wait to see how it ends.

**Huge thanks to the publisher for providing the arc free of charge**

I've been a fan of Amy Tintera's works in the past, I really liked the Reboot Duo...but maybe I need to be more discerning when it comes to the YA I choose to read...because I wasn't really feeling this...it just felt too YA for me. The dialogue felt rather cheesy and the actions of the characters felt off...I'm going to with this being a case of it's not you (the book), it's me (me). Since there are already plenty of readers who've liked it. Although, I do love the cover and its simplicity.

I want to say that the narration by Maria Liatis was well performed...but maybe she's to blame for how I feel about the book...who knows.

I’m a huge fan of action packed Dystopian reads and this sounded very much promising. Well, this book was okay but it wasn’t as good as I thought it would be. The monster hunting aspect reminded me of pacific rim and starship troopers. I enjoyed the action parts but my main issues are that the plot was a bit predictable, and there’s an annoying triangle that stole some of my enjoyment. It would’ve been great if there’s unnecessary drama in the plot.

I honestly couldn’t connect with the characters. They felt a bit unrealistic. I really liked Clara’s character at the beginning. She ran away from home to avoid her abusive father and enlists herself into the international monster fighting squad. My interest dwindled when she starts an insta-romance with her young sponsor and later develops feelings for her squad leader. It was an unnecessary drama, but I’m glad that she had at least chosen the right guy in the end. The secondary characters weren’t fleshed out well enough. They’re honestly not memorable enough. I really wished there was a bit more focus on Clara’s relationship with her brother.

The concept was pretty good but the execution of the plot was above average. It would’ve been great if the story focused less on the romance and more on the monster action, friendship, and family relationships. Some of the major twists were predictable. It was easy to predict who’s the bad guy in the team from the start. I mean c’mon It was pretty obvious with how the person was missing every time the monster attacks occurred. It took some time for our mc to finally connect the dots. The writing was good though. I didn’t have any issue with it, but coming to the world building, It doesn’t have much of a dystopian feel to it except for the monster part. They’re a huge creepy things.

Overall, it was an okay-ish read! It’s a little disappointing that it didn’t work out for me. The story really has great potential but it needs some improvement. I hope the next book is much better than this one.

I loved it. I was hooked from page one. There was nothing specific that drew me to it, it just grabbed my attention and held on. A motley crew of teens fight scrabs, which are monsters that are killing everyone in sight.

Clara comes from an abusive home and runs away from home and school to fight the scrabs. She has little training and know-how, but ends up being a super tough chick who can hold her own. It was easy for me to get lost in the story and not care why Clara is all of a sudden amazing or that I needed more answers. The characters are easy to like and I loved the scrab scenes. Short or long, I liked the fighting and mystery of them.

I needed a bit more info on the scrabs and why they came to be. I imagine that will come in the next book, but for now, it’s a contemporary world that is being taken over by these monsters and people are coming together to fight them. I feel like there’s more to them, something deeper is lurking in their development or existence. I can’t wait to see where the story goes. This is my first Tintera novel and I will be looking into more!

Trigger warnings: physical abuse of a minor, alcoholism. Thank you to Amy Tintera, HMH Books for Young Readers through NetGalley for the copy in exchange for my review. This book comes out July 7, 2020.

A brilliant and compelling read! Clara is willing to do anything to escape her abusive father, including signing up to fight scrabs - human-killing monsters. But Clara knows the worst monsters wear human faces, and they can be the ones closest to us. All The Monsters is fast-paced and action-packed. There's quite a bit of fighting, but there's even more heart. Members of Clara's team are witty, complicated, and a joy to read. I read this novel in a single day - a thing that hasn't happened once since 2019. I highly recommend to everyone who enjoys strong characters, action and romance.

This was a very good book!
The character development was done very smoothly, I found that nothing felt rushed and the author took their time writing.
Within the pages were monsters (called scrabs), new friendships, misleading relationships and constant action!
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it to anyone who wants to read about action in an almost dystopian world!

I think going into All These Monsters that it is best to have the mindset that this is pure goofy fun. The characters are broadly drawn, fairly unrealistic, but enjoyable to follow. Tintera gives us a motley fighting crew that, for better or worse, will have to come together to get the job done. While there are some disappointing YA tropes here, it's best to just let the story ride and hitch on for the humor and action.

Story: Teen Clara lives in a broken home in Texas - physically abused by her father and not protected by her mother. Failing high school and miserable, she sees a way out when a pair of rich siblings post an advert looking for fighters for the menace known as Scabbers - vicious creatures that live underground and emerge to attack everything around them. Texas doesn't have any but Europe and Asia have been hit extremely hard. Clara sneaks away to join the fighters and gets much more than she bargained for in the process.

So yes, it is a YA dystopian in the mold of the 1990s; this means the world building is not explained and you just have to accept it as it is (and it will likely be revealed in the last book why there are these vicious creatures suddenly but for now, you have to let it ride). And yes, the YA dystopian tropes are here as well. Just take our main character Mary Sue: poor lonely friendless girl who feels she's useless and can't do anything right but turns out to be super powerful and everyone falls in love with her, including the other girls who are secretly jealous of her. Boys will want her and girls who hated her will suddenly become her bestest buddy. But for most of the book, she'll mope about how useless she is and how she isn't good looking or smart.

You won't believe any of the characters could be real people but that shouldn't stop you from enjoying the book. Each of the squadmates are quirky enough that you can easily distinguish them among a crowded list of characters. Non squadmates are also caricatures but familiar ones so they seem less silly. Of course, Clara will kick butt and impress everyone despite having no previous skills, experience, or talent in the field of fighting. Pure personality translates to pure strength in this story with Clara.

So yes, this harkens back to the old days of YA dystopian - silly plot and silly characters but lots of goofy fun and action. It will keep you interested through to the end, with very little downtime. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!

THIS BOOK??!!

WHERE DO I EVERN START MAN😭

Okay sooo, “All These Monsters” follows Clara, a 17-year-old girl living in an abusive home in Texas.
One day, Clara gets word that she can sign up to fight these deadly monsters called ‘scrabs.’ So, to get away from home, she signs up right away. After getting on the team, Clara travels to Europe, makes new friends, starts some…. interesting… relationships and becomes a great monster hunter.

Not long after, however, Clara finds out some pretty scary stuff about this new life she’s living…

Okay back to me screaming: AHHHHHHHHHHH

THIS NOVEL IS FANTASTIC!!!

Dystopian? YA.
Action Scenes?? YUP
Monsters??? MHMM
and a Love-Triangle???? YES MAMMMMM.

Something I LOVE to see in YA-Fiction are good side characters. And let me tell you, Any Tintera did not disappoint! Every single character has a strong and unique personality. Love love love.

I also love some fast-paced action & fight scenes too! Always kept me on the edge of my seat.

Anyways, this is a great story for those who love action-packed novels with important themes and great relationships.

5 stars, obviouslyyy⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

amy tintera... back at it with the kickass dystopian novels

LOVE LOVE LOVE this book! Clara was such a likeable main character and I really felt for her :( She wasn't unrealistically good at the monster fighting right away, but still super strong and fun to read about!

The characters in this story are so developed and well-written. i felt like all the characters were my friends as well T_T

the romance... lets just say it was very complex. im grateful amy tintera spelled out how some ya tropes are SUPER harmful and toxic. that was super refreshing to read and a wakeup call!

on to the sequel :)

I feel conflicted and bummed out about this book tbh.

It has lots of ingredients that could make this a fantastic book for me, but somehow all those ingredients just don't 'connect with/didn't work for' me the way I was hoping it would. It truly pains me to say this, because I absolutely Adored the other work I've read by this author (the Ruined trilogy) before and was so looking forward to fall in love with this new story written by her that looked so promising from the get go.

That being said, there were some good things present as well; I loved the action scenes for one, the characters were fun to read about - although I felt like some issues they encountered/had to process were a bit too juvenile for me in the way it was written into the forming and developing relationships - and the writing by the author was just super fluent and engaging. So despite me having quite some remarks on the execution of this book on some parts, I also enjoyed myself from time to time as well. So yes: all those feelings has me feeling very conflicted.

Overall this was a mostly enjoyable story, but unfortunately this wasn't as epic as I hoped it'd be beforehand regarding the execution. There were quite some developments I saw coming from miles away and I felt like some elements just didn't 'click' together in this setting, but because of the authors writing style and me liking some of the characters a lot, I'll probably be reading the next book as well to see how it'll end haha.

Between the story, the characters and the Scrabs, I loved everything about this novel! Clara is 17 and running from an abusive home. When her mother takes back her father again it’s the last straw. Clara decides her only way out is to join Grayson St. John’s Scrab killing team.

Scrabs have an unknown origin and depending on the continent can be deadlier, creepier, faster and even smarter. They tunnel underground and erupt without notice slaughtering whoever is in their path. Clara’s life completely changes when she joins the team and sinister plots involving the Scrabs begin to surface.

This was everything I needed it to be. I had Divergent and Maze Runner vibes in my head as I read along. Clara may be a flawed character but her life struggles and situations make it easy to connect with her and see her strength. Her team is icing on the cake. I didn’t find one that I didn’t like. They are all written in a way that makes you want to have them in your life as your own personal monster fighting squad. I honestly can’t say enough about this book.

There are themes of alcoholism and child abuse for those interested in trigger warnings. There are descriptive scenes of violence during attacks as well.

Thank you to Amy Tintera and HMH Books for Young Readers for an advanced reader copy through NetGalley in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.

Love a poc fmc. I appreciate a diverse cast of characters.

I don't think the plot makes a ton of sense in terms of these crab like monsters invading countries and teenage meecernaries having to fight them. Like Europe wouldn't just be like "Well I guess we just live for 10 years with regular monster attacks.

That being said I think there's some really important messaging about the lasting effects of childhood trauma, the responsibility of enablers of abuse, and what red flags shouldn't be ignored in young love.

This was so good. It was refreshing to have an abusive boyfriend in YA actually be recognized as abusive and not attractive. This sets a good example for young girls, anyone really, that you don’t have to put up with crap. That you shouldn’t put up with crap. That “it’s not normal” in the words of the very smart and very wise Edan.

This world seemed especially real and was very immersive, I wanted to stay up all night reading it. Clara was an absolute icon. I love her. I loved every single member of the cast.

Definitely recommend. Please read this. Immediately.

I couldn't shut up about this book when I finished it and I will continue in that fashion. I'm really hoping this is one of the next YA Sci-Fi/Dystopians series to take off because I really liked it and can't wait for book two!

Clara's world is very similar to ours except, instead of COVID fears, the world's population is facing the threat of monsters called scrabs. Clara signs up to be part of group of scrab hunters but falls headfirst into a bigger than expected problem when she discovers a secret about the scrabs.

As a biracial reader, I was really happy to see another biracial protagonist. It's nice to see more and more diverse representation in the YA genre. Additionally, Tintera writes in a way that makes it easy for the reader to empathize with and root for Clara. The writing was engaging the entire time. I couldn't put this book down.

While I'm not usually a fan of love triangles, this was done in a way where it's not "the female protagonist is being argued over like an object" and I appreciated it. The two love interests have a dynamic similar to Tamlin and Rhysand from ACOTAR, so if you're a fan of either of them, I think you'll be especially interested in the romance aspect.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 stars! Can't wait for All These Warriors next year!

So I didn't love this as much as I loved the Ruined trilogy but I enjoyed it more than Reboot. I wasn't super crazy about the romance to start but as the book went on, I realized it was being used for a purpose and not an "OTP love at first sight." I do wish the author would have extended the timeline because it seemed a little ridiculous all this happened over the course of like 2 weeks. Even if you have to time jump, I could imagine the characters getting more comfortable with each other off camera and building friendships, etc.

Feels like I re read the 5th wave. A modern world where these monsters run rampade, which comes this girl and joins a make shift fighting group to get away from as description abusive father and mother who doesn’t do anything. So pretty much they train you, then slowly one by one your team dies. The author atleast did well setting up romance start plot to it and what turns to. But back to death parts of the team. One thing atleast this book did better was found ways to make when finally making a plan and see how could do well and not all the time someone die just I feel with spots making a impact should made some strides in the story but nothing good come to see. Sooo Like the 5th wave it’s enough keep me intrigued I want to see outcomes but I didn’t enjoy the story at all this as close to my one star I use. Will I read the second book maybe since still curious but not sure one bit.

I loved this book, the characters were all likable and fun to follow. I loved seeing their training, and in their training they are not just getting stronger physically but also with themselves. The main character Clara becomes more confident and I really liked how it was done because it really reflects on everything that has happened in her life with her parents. Also, I don’t know why but Patrick was my fave character even though he didn’t do a lot. All the fighting scenes were great especially when it wasn’t in training but with the scrabs. But one thing about the scrabs is that I wish we got a more in-depth look at them because I think some more could be done. The plot of this was great and well paced, I was hooked into this story from the very beginning. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and I’m excited to see what will come next.
