The Killers #3.5

Until the Tequila

Rate this book
Tequila: a distilled beverage made from the blue agave plant and, in Mary’s case, a truth serum.

It took one night.
No, it took one dinner, a bevy of cocktails, and a woman who’s been skirting me for months. Then, everything changed. Because the tequila did what it does best, Mary’s words flowed faster than the magic liquid she was shooting with salt and lime.
Mary had demons—ones she thought were buried. She thought wrong.
She can’t hide from her past or from me. Not anymore.
I’m Evan Hargrove and I’ll turn the world red before I let anything happen to her.

This is a Killers Series Crossover Novella written for the Happily Ever Alpha World of NYT Bestselling Author, Aurora Rose Reynolds.

Warning: This book contains naughty words and sexy bits. If you aren’t eighteen, step away from the purchase button, turn around, and walk away. We’ll pretend this never happened and I won’t tell your parents.

Until the Tequila: A Killers Crossover Novella is by Brynne Asher. This book is fairly short in length, but not on content. And oh my gosh, the ending, that epilogue. It’s one you won’t forget. Evan and Mary are two characters that in a very short time, completely stole my heart.

Evan Charles Hargrove III grew up privileged. His parents did love him and although his dad was disappointed that Evan didn’t want to follow him in business, they were still close. Evan is the tasting room manager at Whitetail Farms Winery.

Evan has had a thing for Mary since the first time he saw her. She is close friends with the owner so they saw each other often. Because she kept him at a distance, he got her attention in any way he could, usually by teasing her because any reaction is better than no reaction. He wouldn’t give up, though. Finally his day had arrived and he convinced Mary to have dinner with him. Only things turned out a little different than he had hoped.

woman with blonde hair with pink ends

Mary grew up in the system, with no real knowledge of what love or family really was. She kept her past hidden from her friends. Mary loved her work as a beautician. She loved making people happy. She knew Evan was interested in her but could not understand why. Their backgrounds were polar opposites. But she had to be nice to him since he worked for her friend. She didn’t know how he did it when he convinced her to have dinner with him. But she made the mistake of drinking tequila because she was so nervous. All the liquor loosened her tongue and she told Evan secrets she hadn’t told anyone. Now he was determined not to let her go, to be her white knight.

tequila

“The petite girl with the mermaid hair who used to make me smile, now makes me ache.”

Mary can’t resist Evan any longer. He convinces her that his feelings are real and that they are going to happen, no matter what. Could she actually have a real chance at happy? But just when she lets herself imagine, her past comes back to greet her in the worst of ways. But this time she’s not alone, this time she has Evan.

“It’s time to up your expectations, baby. And I swear to you, I’ll meet every last one of them.”

I’ll stop here. Now all I want to do is gush about how much I loved this, how much these two were just so perfect. How I got butterflies. And that ending! But I won’t. Well, maybe I already did. Mostly I just want to tell you to read this book. That it’s swoony and sweet and a bit suspenseful and sexy. All my favorite “S” words. I love this author. I really do. And I can’t wait to see what she is going to do next.

Oh my gosh! This story has everything! It’s the full deal in a small package as only Brynne Asher can do it.

Mary’s life was not pleasant. Her history is dark and lonely, filled with experiences a child should never have to witness. She longed for the time when she could find freedom. Living with low expectations, she is always the outsider until Evan Charles Hargrove III changes everything.

”He’s more all-American than the boy next door, the Fourth of July, and red solo cups all rolled into one.”

“I’ve cancelled his appointment five times because I don’t think I could handle having him in my chair, let alone touching him. I’d end up strangling him or having a mini-orgasm and either would be bad for business.”

Despite the darkness in his own past, Evan has made his own way and is content with where he is in life. Always trying to get a reaction from Mary, he flirts and touches and does whatever he can to make her respond to him. She has shot him down time after time for a date but when he finally wears her down, the last thing he expected was a night of tequila and a whole new set of questions about Mary.

description

”I thought I wanted her before last night. I had no f@cking clue. But today? Today, I need her in a way I can feel in every cell of my body. The petite girl with the mermaid hair who used to make me smile, now makes me ache.”

I absolutely loved Mary and Evan. Mary didn’t think she was broken, but she very much was, and Evan recognized it and set out to put her back together. She is a strong heroine, edgy and borderline wild child, but with a heart of gold. Fighting her attraction for Evan, she made me laugh as she came up with one lie after another during his periods of persistence. I loved that he never gave up. He was determined to get the girl and nothing was going to change his mind. But after the tequila, his determination is ramped even higher even as his protective instincts kick in.

description

This couple were absolutely perfect together! I adored the humor that highlighted their relationship and the sincerity that colored Evan’s actions to win Mary. This never drags and the internal monologues were just as moving and enriching as the dialogue between them. The chemistry is definitely felt throughout every interaction and holy heck does it get absolutely steamy! For a novella this felt like a full book except that I still wanted more when it was over.

I can’t recommend this one enough to anyone who loves a sassy heroine, a dedicated hero, some drama to cause your heart to race, and an epilogue that’s going to make you choke up from all the goodness contained within.

Tequila is not my favorite drink, but for a Brynne Asher book I'll learn to like it. If drinking that devil's drink gets me Evan, even better.

If you've read Vines, you've gotten to know a little bit about Evan and Mary. I've always wanted to know what was going on with those two. The author teased us with just enough about them that you knew there had to be a story there.

Three books later and we finally get to see Evan catch Mary. It was worth the wait! I really enjoyed seeing a different side to Evan. I didn't realize how dominant he was and I loved every bit of it. I'm such a huge fan of boy-chase-girl stories and you get that. Even is relentless and no matter how hard Mary tries to avoid him, she can't. Swoon!

For a novella this really had a lot to it. We got to see everyone from Vines and it made me love Crew all over again. I have this need to go back and re-read the Killer series again. We also get to see a special appearance from a couple in Aurora Rose Reynolds Until series. I let that be a secret so you can experience that yourself. I loved it!

Until the Tequila is a crossover novella bringing Evan from Brynne Asher's Killers series together with Mary, who has a connection to July Mayson from Aurora Rose Reynolds Until series. I loved getting to see characters from both series get little mentions in this novella, but I also really liked that this was completely Evan and Mary's story. Those side characters never took over the book and didn't take any of the focus off of the main characters, which is something I've seen happen in a lot of crossover stories.

Mary is a little skittish when it comes to Evan, she doesn't want to put herself in the path of anyone that could potentially hurt her. But Evan never stops trying to get close to her so and after a night of drinking leads Mary to divulging some secrets he's even more determined to make her his. I loved that fierce protectiveness that he had and how he held on to Mary even as she was trying to avoid him. Mary was definitely his Boom.

The bottom line is that this was an amazing novella. It had a little bit of suspense from Mary's past, the heated intensity between her and Evan, and the ridiculously adorable romance between them. It's a must read that also tells me I need to start drinking tequila more often if it leads to a man like Evan.

She kept pushing him away… Until the Tequila

You don’t know how lucky you are until you compare your stories to others. As a kid, I thought I had the toughest gig in the world. My parents had a hardware store and I worked in it every weekend and most school holidays. As an adult, I now realise that I was so bloody lucky. I have good work ethics, know my bibs and bobs, and finished school with money in my bank account. Until the Tequila was another friendly reminder of how lucky I am. My parents love me and I never once had to rely on strangers to put a roof over my head or keep me fed and clothed. Mary, and to some extent Evan, weren’t so lucky and reading about their childhoods made me appreciate my good fortune.

Mary has been pushing away Evan’s advances for a long time. She’s not willing to put her heart on the line, especially with someone she knows she could end up loving. Evan has had his eye on Mary FOREVER, but it wasn’t until the tequila that he gets the opportunity to know her better. With a hangover to beat all hangovers and a few gaps in her memory, Mary is ready to run. The very sexy Evan is in hot pursuit and Mary realises running or pushing him away is not going to happen.

I’ll be honest, novellas don’t always work for me but somehow, Brynne Asher always leaves me satisfied. There’s enough storyline, character building and sexy times to grab and hold my interest from start to finish. Sure, I’d love it to be longer as I would have loved a little more depth to the characters. I wanted to see a few of Evan's attempts to win Mary over or to have seen her vulnerable and sharing her secrets. I understand why, as it is a novella, but once I start a Brynne Asher, I always want more.

In Until the Tequila we get to catch up with a few Killers who I’ve met before and loved. This is a prequel to The Killers, right before Addy and Crew are together. It’s made me want to go back for a Vines/Killers revisit.

If you’re looking for a quick treat that leaves you happy, I highly recommend giving Until the Tequila a go. It’s got all your bases covered…a lovable heroine, a sexy and protective hero, a touch of action and enough heat to see their connection.

if it only took a tequila shot, there shouldve been an army of boyfriends lining up my doorstep by now. so what am i doing wrong?? the absence of rainbow hair and the fact that im (thankfully) not from a broken home is what. oh, i know, what about its because ive never actually drunk any alcoholic beverage in my life lol 🙈 but if you can guarantee it’ll get me an Evan Hargrove, then i can get on board.

Evans been pursuing Mary for months. hes had no luck until one night of drunkeness leads to Mary spilling all her truths, and Evan finally gets his in (saving her from her family drama). i never particularly interested nor cared for this couple, and this novella didnt really change that. this is the usual Brynne Asher OG goodness. i didnt love it, but i can certainly appreciate their journey to love and HEA.

5 Tequila Shooter Stars!!

I am a big fan of the Killers series and characters (especially Asa....swoon) so I’m glad we get Evan and Mary’s novella. We were introduced to Evan who is the tasting room manager at Addy’s Whitetail Farms Winery and Mary, who is a friend of Addy’s in Brynne Asher’s first “Killers” book Vines. Though the focus of the story is on their budding romance, there's a bit of mystery involving Mary's past that adds a element of suspense, drama and action.

This as a short, sweet, sexy, & hot read!!! I loved how Evan knew he wanted Mary and wasn't going to let anyone change his mind.....especially Mary! Mary’s childhood was not pleasant. Her history sad and filled with experiences no child should never have to witness. She’s resigned to live with low expectations, she’s always the outsider (or thinks she is) until Evan Charles Hargrove III changes everything.

“He’s more all-American than the boy next door, the Fourth of July, and red solo cups all rolled into one.”

OMG!! The Epilogue is amazing and sure to put a happy contented smile on your face. Until the Tequila is a must read for fans of BA’s Killers series.

*I highly recommend reading Vines before reading this novella to get the background on Evan, Mary, Addy, and Crew.

So....this really worked for me! It’s my first Brynne Asher book, but she did such an amazing job setting up the Killers series that I immediately bought the first book in that series! I am beyond impressed.

So here’s what I loved:
The main characters are cute and quirky. He’s sexy and sweet. She’s a bit of a hot mess, but my kinda hot mess. They’re mutual friends are friends so they’re well aquatinted with one another. I enjoyed the banter and her quirkiness immensely!!

The backstory and tie into ARR was enjoyable. Not my all time favorite couple, but that didn’t matter. The history was solid and the friendship that bound the two worlds was believable.

The overall plot was fine, but I did have a Hangup about the main conflict. I get it, but I still had a small hiccup.

The writing is good, the setup is good, the pacing was okay (its a novella). Overall, an impressive read from a new to me author. I can’t wait to read more!!

This was pretty good. Short and sweet with a little action, but it was your usual damsel in distress story by BA. It was barely a ‘Killers’ book and it’s not really true to include it into that series. It’s more of a crossover Killers adjacent book, some of the characters are present, but it has none of that Killers feel. Evan was a cutie, but overbearing and Mary was unlike how she was depicted in Vines. She was just kind of a ghost of her edgy, sarcastic, vivid character. I guess for damsel in distress purposes BA needed to make her soft and more easily maneuvered by her man. I notice that this author takes the teeth out of her female characters in most of her books. They start out strong but then become dependant and helpless without their men. Maybe one day one of them will stay strong throughout and remain a strong woman standing beside, not behind her man. 🤷🏼‍♂️ one can hope.

5 'The Tequila Made Me Do It' Stars

Yayyyyyy!!! Finally Evan and Mary's story is here and it is EVERYTHING! All my anticipations for these two were surpassed. So much more than just a novella, Until The Tequila is the WHOLE romance package!

After first reading about Evan and Mary in the first of the Killers' series, Vines, I was instantly craving these two's very own book, well I got my wish in FULL on fulfilment. They were already intriguing characters there, but in this novella...Wow... They were SO much more. Their cat and mouse gave they had been going on for months was the perfect build up for this story, because we truly got to see and witness their BOOM. And what a boom... It's all on the tequila! LOL

This kiss is everything I imagined it would be.
Yet, so much more.

Give me one night to change your mind.  One night is all I need.

“Baby, I plan on breaking down all your walls, so lean back and enjoy it.”

Brynne Asher sure knows how to pack all punch of emotions of a novel sized story in a novella, because that definitely was what we got in Until The Tequila.

All the emotions, all the rawness of feelings and impact of their chemistry was there and then some. Evan and Mary - specially Mary with her struggles and her troubled past - were such amazing and complex characters. And Evan... OMG, this man completely stole my heart. Never once while reading Vines did I expect this level of ALPHA manliness from him. Seriously, best book boyfriend material. He knew what he wanted from the very beginning, never gave up of slowly getting his change, and when the time came, BANG! He revealed his OTT Alpha male and took his girl... swoon!!!

Until The Tequila fits like a glove not only in the exceptional original series of Brynne Asher's Killers, but also in this fantastic world of the Happily Ever Alphas - it was amazing to see Aurora Rose Reynolds' July and Wes again, and how beautifully they connected with these two -, and their BOOM. Raw, emotional, witty and fast paced but still deeply intricate, and so full of steam and passion, this novella wrapped all this up so perfectly that left us wanting even more of this world and these characters, that's how fantastic it was! <3 <3 <3 <3 <3

I feel it.  She holds me, lock and key.  I’m her prisoner.

Mary is my vice.

I just gave myself to Evan in every way and I don’t want to remember it forever.

From Tequila Confessions to Trust Fund Charm

The following ratings are out of 5:
Romance: 🖤💙❤️💚
Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥
Chemistry: 🧪🧪🧪🧪
Story/Plot: 📕📗📙📘
World building: 🌏🌍🌎🌏🌍
Character development: 🙃🙁😀😋🥰
Narration: 🎙🎙🎙🎙🎙
Narration Type: Dual Narration

🧡 The Heroine – Mary
Mary, a vibrant beautician with a flair for changing her blonde locks, is Addy’s best friend from Vines, the first installment of the series. Beneath her bubbly exterior lies a quieter, more complicated history shaped by the foster care system and a life spent largely alone. She’s no stranger to casual dating, but intimacy? That’s another story—she’s never truly opened up to anyone. Her guarded heart adds poignant tension as she slowly lets Evan in.

💪 The Hero – Evan
Evan manages the tasting room at Whitetail Farms Winery, owned by Addy, and he’s basically wine royalty—born into wealth, educated in business, and deeply passionate about viticulture. Despite his father’s disappointment in Evan skipping out on the family horse breeding legacy, he forged his own path and fell hard for Mary. It took persistence (and patience) to earn a date with her, but his devotion never wavers.

🍷 The Storyline
Mary’s nerves before her date with Evan push her into a wine-and-tequila-fueled haze, leaving her unfiltered and vulnerable in ways she’s never dared before. She wakes in Evan’s bed, unsure of what she said, but something cracked open. Meanwhile, calls from an old friend stir ghosts from her Tennessee past—especially when she learns her estranged father is back in town and searching for her. The emotional tension ramps up, intertwining romance with long-buried trauma and questions of reconciliation.

🔎 Highlights

• Despite its novella length, the character development is impressive—both leads feel layered and authentic.
• The subplot involving Mary’s father adds depth and emotional stakes, keeping the narrative engaging.
• The world-building, particularly around the winery and Mary’s Southern roots, feels immersive and tangible.

⚠️ What Didn’t Hit for Me

• The story begs for more space. A full-length novel could have deepened its emotional beats and fleshed out the excellent supporting cast.

🎧 Audiobook Performance
Kit Swann’s narration is warm and expressive, with a relatable tone and surprisingly seamless delivery of male voices. Jason Clarke’s voice? A velvet growl with just the right edge—his gravelly timbre brings Evan to life, especially in the steamier moments. Together, their dual narration creates compelling emotional contrast and amps up the romantic tension, making for a truly engaging listening experience.

””Baby, I plan on breaking down all your walls, so lean back and enjoy it.””

This lovely novella was my first taste of Brynne Asher’s writing skills and now she got me hooked. I got a glimpse of her The Killers Series and definitely want more now.

Even though it’s only a novella, I really enjoyed myself reading it. It has just enough from everything, that I hardly missed something.
The only thing I didn't really feel was the chemistry between the characters. IMO it just scratched the surface of what could have been. Therefore, I think it would have been smarter for me, if I had read Vines (book 1 in The Killers Series) before as I would have met met Evan and Mary already and it would have been easier for me to get their connection

”I feel it. She holds me, lock and key. I’m her prisoner. Mary is my vice.”

Until The Tequila is a funny, smart and thrilling novella that connects characters from Brynne’s The Killer Series and Aurora Rose Reynolds’ Happily Ever Alpha world.

There was only one thing wrong with this book..........it was too short......I need more of this couple.....why oh why does it have to be a novella!

Mary and Evan was the perfect surprise at the end of the Vines Audiobook! Mary is a fucking hysterical and I love how alpha Evan ended up being.

This was a perfect little snack to one of my favorite series.

~I'm currently binging some Brynne Asher if you can't tell. Every time I read one of her books, I need to chase it with 3-4 more.

Friends to lovers

When Mary wakes up from the night before she has one killer hangover and she’s definitely not in her bed. As it all starts to come back to her all she knows is that she’s in his bed. Evan Hargrove the one man she’s tried her best to avoid.

Evan cornered Mary into their date. He’d been trying for months to get her to go out with him and when he finally got his chance he took it. What he didn’t foresee is his Mary getting plastered. But with the filter off he learnt a whole lot about her. And he wants more.

Mary has spent her life thinking she was never good enough. A life of being in the foster system will do that to you. She has always felt as though she was on the outside looking in.

She doesn’t see what others see. A bright and beautiful person who is always willing to lend a hand.

When her past comes back to haunt her in the likes of her deadbeat father it’s going to take her friends and Evan to help her.

These two frenemies to lovers was a sexy read. An alpha who will do anything to protect what’s his. Even kill.

Steamy read. And a new author for me one who I will adding to my list.

If you’ve read Brynne Asher’s book Vines in The Killers series, you’ve probably read about Evan and Mary and I so wanted to read their story for a long time. I was not disappointed (even though I wanted more). Like always, Brynne gives you a amazing book with a swoony protective Alpha male and a awesome heroine.
Since reading Vines, I’ve wondered why Mary was closed off. Her life was not easy. Poor girl went through a lot wen she was a little girl. But she was also a strong heroine. And glad she had Evan to help her.
Evan..swoon..so Alpha, possessive and protective of Mary and knew what he wanted and went for it.
He wanted Mary since he first saw her and didn’t give up “Until The Tequila”threw down her defenses.
Love their chemistry and the banter between them.
I had a huge smile on my face every time I read about Addy and The Killers (Crew, Grady and Asa). Freaking loved that so much.
Also one of my highlights was July and Wes’ cameo. July is Mary’s best friend from Tennessee. It was awesome.
This book is a novella, but it has everything; good storyline, amazing characters, suspense, protective Alpha, strong heroine and 🔥🔥🔥

Omg I had all the feels down to my toes reading this novella. I absolutely loved it and Brynne never disappoints with this crossover series.

The characters of Evan and Mary were perfectly crafted. They have a tug and pull kind of attraction but when they collided, fireworks baby!!! I devoured their lust in my greedy hands and was even more excited coming across Crew and Grady from the killers series. I so missed them.

Brynne your stories always keep me captivated. Now just keep on writing because we just need more.

4.5 stars. I loved this novella. It was included at the end of the audiobook version of the first book in this series, Vines. And both are included with an audible subscription! 😁😁

I honestly wasn’t sure how this novella would fit into the series, since the hero of this book is VERY different from the other heroes in this series. He’s a bartender, not a trained killer. However, I think this was such a nice addition, and still managed to have some good action. It was also just the right length for this story - anything longer would have dragged.

AND, if there was EVER a reason to rate a book highly, the epilogue of this novella would be it. It was ABSOLUTELY PERFECT. It left me with the best happy feelings. 🥰🥰

Safe; no om/ow, no cheating, no virgins, no details about either hero or heroine’s past.

Evan and Mary

I love Brynne Asher and Aurora Rose Reynolds, so when I saw this crossover of The Killers series and Until series I knew I just had to read it. This one was a short story, so maybe that's why it didn't feel as satisfying to read as I thought it would. The writing was just ok. I didn't feel the chemistry between the two main characters as I should've and the story like wasn't as s exciting as it could've been.

Brynne Asher quickly became a favorite of mine after I devoured this brilliant series, The Killers, per a ton of recommendations on Facebook. And y'all, I've not wanted to miss one single moment as they've come. So when I saw Brynne was going to be a part of this addicting world and intertwining it with her Killers, I just knew that I could not miss a thing. Best decision ever y'all! This book was everything!

Until the Tequila was a fast-paced, steamy, sexy, suspenseful, unstoppable, unputdownable romance that had me all in my feels from the very beginning and left me with the biggest smile on my face. I've been waiting and hoping for this story with these two characters and per her usual, Brynne did not disappoint for one single second in their beautiful journey.

One night and one confession is going to change everything...

Evan and Mary lit up my kindle from the very first moment they landed on my kindle. Undeniable chemistry. Unforgettable moments. A magnetic pull and attraction that neither can deny. Evan wants Mary and when he learns her secrets, he'll stop at nothing to make her his. Evan wants it all and he won't let anything or anyone get in his way.

The Killers series is a brilliant one packed with heart, heat, intensity, swoony badass alphas, and edge of your seat suspense. This was the perfect addition of two background characters I've been dying to get my hands on.

Fall head over in heels in love as they take a chance on their very own once in a lifetime kind of BOOM and learning that finding forever can happen in just one single moment.

Aurora Rose Reynolds has created a whole new BOOM spin off world book where authors of her choosing write stories that link and swerve into her series. ARR has seriously started a dream by creating this new Happily Ever Alpha world and I'm so so so freaking excited to see what we get in every single book... and even meet some new to me authors and characters.

I highly recommend this book.

Worlds collide

This was a great bringing together of the Maysons and The Killers families. I so loved the story between Evan and Mary. Evan never gave up and Mary finally finds the peace and happiness she had been wanting.

Well Brynne Asher does it again.....a page turner that I devoured although I wanted to read it slowly and savor it. I absolutely loved the story of Mary and Evan. Mary tried to resist but Evan is persistent and determined and my oh my you can feel the chemistry. From the beginning you feel like you are reading a book about old friends...the characters you know and love and can’t get enough of. I’m completely addicted to the warm fuzzy feeling I get when I finish one of Mrs. Asher’s books....all the stars for this one!

A light and fluffy novella this made me smile throughout. A good mix of sweet and sexy.

Evan and Mary work well together.

One little niggle I don think Mary was broken, a little dented and wary but defo not broken.

Have to say if this was real life and my BFF disclosed so much info to a guy she’d never met over the phone, as July does, I’d want to ring her neck – but within the framework of the book it amused and had me rolling my eyes.

Ever since I read Brynne Asher's Killer Series I have always wanted, no NEEDED, to know how Mary and Ethan would end up. Boy did Brynne Asher deliver! Amazing, heartfelt, and a novella written with the amazing balance of the story not feeling rushed at all. I totally and completely fell in love (all over again) with these two and the ending, oh how the ending is mushy and perfect and made my heart sigh hugely (along with giving me a HUGE smile). Well written!!!!!!!!!
