Colette Arrand’s poetry reminds me of Frank O’Hara: witty, observing the effects of pop culture—but not “cool” culture, per se—writing about the act of creation itself, and meditations on queerness. It’s some of the best new poetry I’ve read in forever.
'How Men Regard My Body' will forever be my alltime favorite poem. This was just a fantastic collection, if I ever find it in print again I'm buying a couple copies.
It's interesting to read poetry by a writer who came from the same general time and place as me, but whose life experience is so different from mine. Some of the specific cultural references that were weaved into deeper meditations on identity, fear, and belonging (Juggalos and Limp Bizkit, for instance) hit me right in the heart in ways I didn't expect. Every poem straddles the line between humor and overwhelming sadness, and feels like it could have been written by nobody else.
