Richard has an SB from MIT in AI software, from Wellesley College in creative writing (Bradbury, WH Auden, Lillian Hellman, Robert Pinsky) and 3 degrees from U Michigan (MA in Chinese/Japanese business, MA in web communities, PHD in total quality improvements of research processes).

His first job was visiting, literally, the richest 2000 Americans for donations for an NGO doing citizen planning meetings in 41 poor nations. His first academic job was Lecturer in Quality Management & Statistics, Univ. of Chicago, Grad School of Business, after work in 7 global firms: in Japan (Panasonic, Sekisui Chemical), in Europe (N. V. Philips, Thompson Electric Paris), in USA (EDS, Coopers & Lybrand Consulting, Xerox PARC.

He launched 3 Silicon Valley tech ventures (2 lived, 1 died). He is Master of Design at De Tao Masters Academy Beijing/Shanghai and Professor of Design, Creativity, and Innovation at Keio University's new Grad School of System Design and Management. He is founder of The Novelty Sciences School and Research Institute. His Kimono Sport Formal fashion lines are being sold in China and he is author of 18 books.
