Amarie has the power to escape her enemy. If only she knew how to use it…
Alone, she lives a life on the run, unsure how to control her abilities. Seeking her mythical magic, the men who murdered her family will never stop hunting her.
Years spent dodging thugs and unveiling the secrets about her blood have her close to the truth, and stealing an ancient text locked within the Great Library might be the final step. During the daring theft, she meets Kin, a man who turns her world upside down.
Kin regrets the shadowed life he chose. Completing tasks. Fetching artifacts. All for a master as wicked as the deepest hell.
Then he meets Amarie. She shatters the walls he’s built, but if she learns he seeks the power that cursed her family, he will lose her forever.
Trusting him could risk her life and her heart, but it might be the only way to destroy the world’s most sinister evil. Unless Kin’s master finds her first…
Embrace of the Shade is Part 1 in The Berylian Key, and Book 1 in the Pantracia Chronicles.

Art has always been a staple in her life - from creative writing to painting, first published at age ten. She is an award-winning, published artist, though she left her career in VFX to return to her passion of writing. The memories of late night writing binges, glued to the computer screen at 1AM, brought her back to the fantasy worlds she created.

This was a little outside my wheelhouse as I don't usually go for fantasy with such a heavy romance element, but I was pleasantly surprised by the way the plot unfolded, especially in the second half of the book. It feels like a great introduction to an epic series and sets a bunch of things in motion that I'm now very curious about. Kin and Amarie are both really intriguing characters carrying their own secrets, and I loved the revelation of some of those secrets to each other. I look forward to seeing where their story goes from here.
The first half of this book moved along very slowly for me. I wanted to know more about the world Amarie & Kin inhabit. While I understood their hidden backgrounds were central to the story, there were so many other things I wanted to know about. The kingdoms, the politics, the magic (known as Art) all felt glossed over. I’m hoping the next book offers a little more in the way of answers.
Great start to the series. I enjoyed the introduction to Amarie and Kin. The romance is enjoyable, as is the mystery surrounding both characters. It all promises plenty of twists and turns ahead.
**I received a free copy of the ebook in exchange for an honest review**
4.5 stars
I really enjoyed this book! The world is fascinating, the fantasy elements are intriguing, and the characters are a lot of fun. I appreciate that both Kin and Amarie are more than capable of looking after themselves, and if any one could be called a damsel in distress, it’s Kin. Their attraction to each other is believable, and the moments they get to spend alone are well-written and realistic. I often find romance stories frustrating because characters don’t communicate and are quick to make assumptions for the sake of drama, but I felt that the issues Kin and Amarie had throughout the novel generally felt realistic and necessary because of the complications of both of their secrets. The pacing is excellent at building suspense, and enough hints are dropped to excite the reader without giving everything away in book one. I’m excited to see where the rest of this story goes!
I usually prefer longer books but this one snagged me fairly quickly and I had trouble putting it down. I enjoyed the chemistry between the two main characters and how the damsel in distress is not who you would think it is. I also really like how Amarie is not the usual female lead. Her absolute absence of the usual female-in-a-romance conditions is both refreshing and relatable. There is no “how do I navigate my female self through this male dominated world?” as one would normally find. She is all fuck that shit and getting it done.
After that ending I am very glad there is a next book to move on to.
Strong, independent woman. Sexy, mysterious man. With a fiery passion between them. In a world of magic. How descriptive the authors are kept me lost in this story. It made me feel everything the characters were feeling. Including the steamy moments. 😉 I highly recommend this book, and very much look forward to reading the second in this trilogy. I'm so glad I met these two lovely ladies at Fan Expo a few years back and bought these books!
I really enjoyed this book. The main characters, Amarie and Kin, are strong, independent, and likeable. They each hold mysterious and powerful secrets, and their attraction to each other is captivating and intense. Fantastic world-building and well-described action made for a compelling read that continues into the second book.
What I liked: slow-burn, lots of action and the magic and worldbuilding. What I liked least: lots of jealousy and the two newer characters at the end. Tropes: fantasy and romance are very heavy. Favourite characters: of course, Amarie and Kin. Kin being my overall favourite with how he always comes back for Amarie and is able to be rational and talk things through. Notable scenes: Kin's powers/magic, Amarie going after Kin after he was taken, seeing dragons (draconi in this series), the smut (of course), a certain person's relation showing up unexpectedly and Amarie having trouble hiding her magic. Interesting magic system and learner a lot of Kin's magic but still unsure exactly what Amarie has, just that she has an unfathomable amount of whatever it is. The worldbuilding and descriptions were fantastic and really took me to a new world. Amarie is great, strong and capable whole not being invulnerable as some FMC can be. I'm intrigued to know more about her and why she thinks she needs or does actually need these shards. For protection she says but she rarely loses control of her aura. Kin is the kind of man I'd wish for, well minus the secrets and over-mysteriousness lol, but he's good at problem solving and very supportive. His magic and family are interesting. Didn't like the two aueric people, they seem to be up to no good. Well one of them, mostly. Auer feels like it could be akin to Fae in other stories, but with darker skin (which is nice to see). Definitely hope to read more about the draconi. Will be continuing the trilogy as soon as I get my hands on them, and then reading more into the larger series at a later date.
It's been a while since I last read a fantasy, so this read was a great opportunity to submerge myself into a brand new world. Submerge me it did - this book had a perfect blend of encountering a new realm with amazing details yet never info dumping and enough mystery to keep you guessing.
At the heart of the novel is the adventures of its two main characters, Kin and Amarie. There's a delicious balance here, that against the beautiful backdrop of the world the two authors have created, the two characters' encounters with one another are wonderfully realistic. Kin and Amarie are also incredibly complex, meaning you develop real empathy with both characters.
This book has a very gripping plot, told through the characters' eyes - as they discover more about each other, so the reader discovers more about what they are both after. The pacing is also excellent, at times slowing down to enjoy the beautiful scenery, with other points nail-bitingly tense. This is also balanced well in the romance aspects of the book - erotica is not my thing so I wondered if I might have to skip a few pages, but the graphic content is actually quite subtle/wasn't enough to put me off as a reader.
It's even more incredible to reflect that there are two authors who have written this novel, yet it's so beautifully written, with such consistency of style, that it could have been one author. This book is a uniquely amazing fantasy and I definitely recommend.
I'll admit that I'm a sucker for just about any fiction novel that in some way has to do with a mysterious book or library. This one has both. I love the chemistry between Kin and Amarie. It sizzles from the start and weaves its way through the book in a delectable way, including well-written, contextual sensual scenes. The story had plenty of action to keep it interesting. I love how the authors maintain a certain degree of mystery about the main characters’ pasts. Fantasy, unfortunately, is the genre that most often falls prey to my most hated thing in genre fiction: the information dump, overwhelming the reader with backstory right at the start. This was not done here, for once—yeah! Instead, we get to know about the world and the main characters slowly as we need to better understand them. In fact, I think the way the authors did it is inherent to and necessary for the story itself. If we knew it all the beginning, the story would not have been so gripping, or the novel itself such a page-turner. So, well done, ladies! I look forward to the next book in this trilogy as well as the greater universe that the trilogy is the starting point for.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 THIS is the fantasy romance I’ve been looking for, with badass female characters who don’t take any 💩 from anyone and devoted animal companions (Viento is absolutely a new favourite).
I loved that there was little to none of the miscommunication trope (except for the ending, but the cliff hanger was wellll executed and I tip my hat to the authors). It really just goes to show that characters can still talk to each other without detracting from the plot!
I think my only criticism is that the pacing was a little off or too fast? But that could also be because I’m coming out of the epically slow Wheel of Time series where every aspect of the journey needs to be described in heavy detail. So ultimately not the biggest issue, I wasn’t mad about skipping ahead to the important bits.
I definitely plan on buying the next books in the series, I’m cursing myself for not buying them when I had the chance at the local expo. Also the authors are the kindest people and I loved chatting with them while buying the book!!
(Also this is no one’s fault but my own, I can’t take the male main character seriously when they use his full name, my brain immediately reads it as tonsillitis 🤦🏼♀️😂 SORRY!)
I met one of the authors of this book at a convention after the cover art caught my eye. She was super lovely and explained the book series, so I decided to go for it, and am I ever happy that I did.
I found myself struggling to put this book down, it really draws you into the world and the characters. The character writing in this book is fantastic, and I’ve always been a fan of strong independent female leads. The banter between Amarie and Kin is good I often found myself smiling as I was reading. The characters are complex, they all have their own secrets, wants and needs, existing outside the main storyline giving them a wonderful sense of depth and emotion. The world of Pantracia is wonderfully detailed, feeling alive outside the confines of the story, leaving you wanting more. I never found myself feeling lost or confused about details described in the book.
I can’t recommend this book enough, if you enjoy fantasy with a twist of romance and a witty banter then this is the book for you. When I finished it I went and picked up the next two so I can finish off Amarie and Kin’s tale, and when I’m done with those I plan on continuing my journey into the Pantracia Chronicles as I’m curious to see what else this world can contain.
An epic fantasy romance, Kin and Amarie’s journey is full of danger, secrets, passion, love and uncertainty. The fragility of Kin and Amarie’s new love is poignant and heartbreaking as neither is able to fully trust the other or even themselves yet. I really enjoyed Kin’s character and found his struggles (in some ways) completely relatable. How many of us have made choices as young adults that have utterly changed our life path? And although wishing otherwise, disentangling one’s self from those responsibilities is no simple task! Narration was just okay imo. Some unusual pronunciation of words (shone) and I found the inflection was off the mark in several instances which was a bit jarring to my ear. I have also enjoyed reading this novel myself, but for those who need or prefer audio books, the story is definitely not one to pass by in any format. I’ve purchased the entire series! I received a copy of the audio book from the authors in exchange for my honest review.
Sent out to obtain a rare and ancient text Kin has the unexpected pleasure of meeting up with the lovely Amarie who like himself is also after the text. Amarie is seeking the text to learn the secrets behind her family’s curse, while Kin is stealing the text for a greedy and evil man. They decide to work together as equals. BUT they discover there is more to their relationship than just finding the ancient text! They mutually agree to work together as equal partners and that’s where the story becomes interesting.
Amanda Muratoff and Kayla Mansur are absolutely notorious for their delightfully fleshed out protagonists, enticing and interactive concepts with engaging plot follow-through, and delightful arrays of inclusive side characters and visionary worldbuilding. I highly recommend this novel. I gave this honest, voluntary review after being given a free copy of the book.
This was my first experience with Amanda Muratoff's and Kayla Mansur's collaborative work and it won't be my last. I enjoyed the first book of the Berylian Key Trilogy. I can't wait for the next book in the series. The world building was awesome. The characters were fascinating and fun. The twists and turns were exciting and kept the action constant. There was some humor and some romance found within the tale. I recommend this story to others who enjoy this genre. Amanda Muratoff's narration was great and adds an additional layer of enjoyment to the story. I was given a free copy of the audiobook and I have voluntarily left this review.
Definitely a captivating book right from the beginning! The romance starts off as a small spark and it's a slow increasing burn. Lots of action you don't expect keeps you on your toes. It's been over eyes since I've found a book I enjoyed enough to read past the first three chapters. This mama has sacrificed her precious sleep just to be able to read it! When reading it's like I'm watching a movie in my head because it's so well written with wonderful descriptive structures. It leaves you wanting more and more!
I’d never read a romance of any type before, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. I was so thrilled with the plot lines, deep characters, and a detailed world I could lose myself in for a while that after reading just a couple of chapters I went back and bought all the books! (At the time it was just through the tenth one, plus the prequel “Dawn of Thieves”.) I recently got the last three and all I can say is Wow! I’m so glad I gave this series a chance. It’s an epic saga well worth the time, with intricately interwoven plots and characters that feel real.
This series is going to be a big hit in the fantasy reading world. This is a great start to a series. Book 1 started off a bit slow but gradually picked up the pace with an incredible writing style that pleasantly eased me into the world. The story line was easy to fall into and by the end of this book, I was hooked. The ending of this book - without giving any spoilers - made it impossible for me to not continue reading the series.
Meh. Full of rolling lips, pressed lips, and every other obsession with lips. Storyline could be enough without the raunch, but it is tainted by the amount of skipping I had to do. And, the poor horse never gets a cool down. They always stop him with heaving chest but never walk him after a lengthy run.
For my clean readers: language-including f-bomb. Romance-kissing, bedroom scenes that include discussion and descriptions. Violence-murder, fighting, torture.
I met Kayla at ECCC this year! The covers of these books are what brought me to her table. Kayla has such a way with words that she sucked me into the world of Pantracia so quickly, and I just had to buy the first trilogy right then and there.
This book absolutely blew me away! This series has me absolutely hooked, it’s very easy to follow and you can latch onto these characters QUICK.
The main characters (Amarie and Kin) are so loveable. They both hold onto powerful secrets, and their intense love for each other is so captivating. I'm so excited to learn more about these two in the next books.
(Long live Viento)
I love love love how original this story is, the attention to detail is amazing. I absolutely hate cliffhangers, but even I can say that this one was very well done. The magic system is absolutely incredible and I can’t wait to read more!
Intrigue and action from the start! Amarie and Kin’s intense connection coupled with fantastical odds and adventures provide a strong start to this series. An intricately built world, interesting side characters, and a cliffhanger that leaves just as many answers as questions leaves you excited for the next one!
It is a very good story. I really enjoyed reading it. It is a story that will make you want to fall in love. I love the part when Kin realized who is Amarie but still choose to be with her. A book that will taught us a lesson that love is unconditional because no matter who we love and no matter what they are, we would always accept them.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
The world is so well fleshed out, the characters so well written and the romance between Kin and Amarie so provocative. I particularly enjoy the attention to detail and originality. It makes you want to keep reading and reading! No spoilers but the following books are great too!
I loved the plot in this book, the last chapter gave a glimpse into more of what both characters are struggling with and their supernatural powers. The first installment of the trilogy ended with a great cliff hanger. 4 🌟.
This is a really interesting story with a great magic system. The world building is fantastic and I loved the characters. There are some fairly steamy scenes in here. It ends on a fairly unhappy note that left me desperate to read on. Can't wait for what's next!
I really enjoyed this book, it took us to some interesting places, had good character development, and introduced us to some cool concepts. As is all too common with book series, it does end on a bit of a cliffhanger.
"Embrace of the Shade" is a must-read for fantasy lovers who appreciate well-developed characters and a compelling narrative. Amanda Muratoff and Kayla Hansen have set a high bar with their debut, and I eagerly await the adventures that lie ahead in the subsequent books of the series.
