Early in Koike's career, he studied under Golgo 13 creator Takao Saito and served as a writer on the series.
Koike, along with artist Goseki Kojima, made the manga Kozure Okami (Lone Wolf and Cub), and Koike also contributed to the scripts for the 1970s film adaptations of the series, which starred famous Japanese actor Tomisaburo Wakayama. Koike and Kojima became known as the "Golden Duo" because of the success of Lone Wolf and Cub.
Another series written by Koike, Crying Freeman, which was illustrated by Ryoichi Ikegami, was adapted into a 1995 live-action film by French director Christophe Gans.
Kazuo Koike started the Gekika Sonjuku, a college course meant to teach people how to be mangaka.
In addition to his more violent, action-oriented manga, Koike, an avid golfer, has also written golf manga.

Un poil trop de nudité gratuite pour moi mais les dessins sont beaux, Yuki est très attachante et certains des thèmes historiques abordés sont super intéressants.

C’est sympa à lire mais vu le format feuilleton c’est vite répétitif et parfois très lourdingue (surtout avec le male gaze outrancier). Je m’attendais à beaucoup plus apprécier ma lecture mais en fait je m’ennuyais très vite. Ça reste une œuvre curieuse et intéressante de par son personnage principal bien fichu et son commentaire social qui paraît plutôt pertinent parfois. Yuki Kashima est iconic.

Une histoire de vengeance ayant inspiré Kill Bill à Quentin Tarantino. On y suit une tueuse à gaga accomplissant la vengeance de sa mère dans le Japon du siècle dernier. Cultissime.

The disappointment after Crying Freeman only makes Lady Snowblood shine brighter. Certainly some of Koike's finest stuff!
So we got an intricate plot of vengeance, transgenerational even, with all the sordid, flashy, stylized and even poetic violence Koike has made us used to. But Koike is not alone to credit, Kazuo Kamimura, whom I had never read before, is really amazing with a plastic and fluid style accomodating, melting and highlighting all the contrasts of a Meiji era and civilization struggles with the most extreme decadence.
Other than the usual and maybe expected quirks (early 70s manga, you know...), I haven't found many major flows but I can't help noticing certain inconsistencies submitted to odd conveniences for the script. Again, not a deal breaker but big enough to ignore. Maybe a veeeery stretched way to build the character arc? I don't really know, but looks certainly odd.
Another thing that made me raise an eyebrow was how cruel Yuki can be on occasion. As Yuki is definitely no alien to suffering from the cruelty of evil people, one would expect certain level of concern, or at least some moral questions. Far from it, Yuki won't hesitate in being extremely cruel (and let me underline "extremely") on some situations that may feel even a bit gratuitous. But of course, that's not how this sort of heroes work and, surprisingly, the ending brings some of the most beautiful and even kind closures one would expect in this violent stories. A matter of contrasts again, I guess.
So yes, some amazing sexy beautiful violent stuff here. Highly recommend.

De belles planches, notamment des silhouettes en kimono très élégantes, un contrastes noir/blanc qui a tendance à me plaire dans tous les mangas (et celui-ci ne fait pas exception). J'ai aimé Yuki, son innocence sous le masque de la tueuse impassible et de ce destin gravé dans le sang. J'ai aussi trouvé intéressant ce portrait de la société Japonaise du XIXème siècle, tiraillé entre tradition et modernité, entre violence outrancière et esthétisme cru et dont Yuki est aussi le reflet: c'est une œuvre globalement intelligente.
Pour ce qui m'a moins plut, la nudité des femmes est très présente et souvent gratuite: je n'ai toujours pas compris pourquoi Yuki se dessape dès qu'elle combat plus de trois hommes: ça n'a aucun sens... Les hommes ne pensent qu'à tuer ou violer des femmes et faire les deux en même temps à l'air de leur plaire particulièrement: c'est un peu malaisant, d'autant plus que je ne pense pas que l'on soit si loin de la réalité du Japon de cet époque dans ce propos ou au moins dans un fantasme très encré.
Les histoires sont souvent redondantes: le format épisodique apporte une répétition un peu ennuyeuse à la longue.

Très beau dessin, l'histoire de vengeance est bien menée avec une héroïne forte. Seul désagrément, Yuki passe son temps dénudée, des tentatives de viols incessantes, ou encore des scènes saphiques inutiles. Cela m'a gâché ma lecture.
