The Gateway Trackers #6

Soul of the Sentinel

Rate this book
A mysterious mark, an ancient spirit, and a message from beyond the Aether… After uncovering and destroying a Necromancer plot to take over Skye Príosún, Jess and Finn are united at last and longing to move on with their life together. But the Durupinen world has other plans. An enigmatic rune keeps revealing itself to Jess—in artwork, in dreams, and even scrawled upon the ancient stones of the Geatgrima at Fairhaven. No one can identify it, but its warning is something dangerous is coming, a revelation that could end the Gateway system forever. Jess must follow the clues where they lead—forming unlikely alliances along the way. When her journey takes her at last to an ancient creature deep in the heart of the príosún, the truth she learns presents her with the most troubling question of what if her Durupinen gift was never really a gift at all, but something altogether darker? Soul of the Sentinel is the much-anticipated sixth installment in E.E. Holmes' spine-tingling paranormal series The Gateway Trackers.

E.E. Holmes

E.E. Holmes grew up near Boston, Massachusetts, where she spent the majority of her childhood reading books. She read them almost constantly, and as a result, perfected the art of walking and reading at the same time, a skill she can still perform to this day with remarkably few instances of falling on her face. She also wrote many books and poems in blank books and on the backs of legal pads her father brought home from the office. They remain some of her finest work.

She soon learned to love literature of the dramatic persuasion, and earned a B.A. in theater from the College of the Holy Cross. After graduation, she set out to prove that her degree was, in fact, not useless, and worked as a principal actor in a summer Shakespeare festival and as a theater teacher, directing over thirty productions and numerous workshops for youth and high school students. She spent several years as the theater director at Wakefield High School where she also taught English literature and public speaking. It was in her classroom that she discovered the horrible truth: a disturbingly large percentage of high school students hate to read. This revelation devastated and bewildered her. She decided she wanted to do something about it, and thus she started work on her first young adult novel, Spirit Legacy: Book 1 of the Gateway Trilogy, which has gone on to win awards from Chanticleer Book Reviews and Media and The Independent Publisher Book Awards. She is also the author of three one act plays, one of which premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

E.E. Holmes lives in central Massachusetts with her husband, two children, and small, but surprisingly loud dog. When not writing, she enjoys watching unhealthy amounts of British television, procrastinating, and rediscovering her favorite books from her childhood all over again with her kids.

OMG THAT ENDING THOUGH

This book was incredible but that ending killed me! Talk about a cliffhanger!! I can't believe E.E did me like that! When does the next book come out??

Another page turner..

This book is more laid back then the others in the series with less action and more mystery but I still thoroughly enjoyed it. It ends with a cliffhanger which can be annoying however the next book is already out so I don't have to wait. I am extremely sad that this series is about to end but I hope that she will continue the legacy with maybe some of the younger trainees like Frankie or even continue the story through the children of Jess, Hannah, Savy etc. Please don't let this wonderful world be over. I would also love a book with a wedding by Milo. How grand to see Jess get married in a gown by non other then Milo Chang. Highly recommend this series!!

I fell in love with the Ballard Girls, Milo, Finn and especially Savvy.
I waited so long for this book only for it to end with a massive cliff hanger? WTH EE Holmes?
Left me feeling incredibly frustrated and hungry for more.

Ugh. I was excited to read this one but unfortunately it was boring. I felt like the chapters were too long and too detailed. I assume the story will continue in the next part. It had a huge potential to be interesting but it just didn’t deliver.

While the writing was familiar ... Jess uncovering all kinds of secrets, Milo's entertaining antics, Hannah's dedication ... I just didn't feel like this installment has as much STORY going on. Every other book seemed to have a definite arc, something that I could tie to that book (often very much tied to the title). A storyline that would resolve, while continuing to add on to underlying ideas running through the whole series.

I actually thought this was the final book, and as I was coming closer to the end, I was thinking "there is NO WAY" anything is going to get resolved. And nothing was. In all the other books, the main mystery presented in its pages was wrapped up. Here ... can you say cliffhanger? And as I try to reflect on what DID happen ... I'm not sure if it's the open ending, but I just didn't feel like THAT much happened this entire book. Maybe I feel that way because nothing was resolved ...

Still giving four stars. I didn't dislike anything while I was reading, just left unsatisfied at the end, which has never happened in one of these Gateway books before.

Borrowed on Kindle Unlimited ... Amazon was offering a sale and I was putting it off a bit because I still had a couple library books to get through (I figured I'd read them THEN start the 2-month for $1 deal) but when I saw this book had come out and was available, I signed up immediately. Didn't want to wait.

This one was the slowest book so far. I called the ending which is whatever. But what did they do to Finn? Neuter him? All of his Yes loves drive me crazy. He had a personality and it was squashed. Everyone seemed muted. It was like the whole of the book was a transition and waiting for something to happen... Where was the climax and the fun bit of the story.. I just lost it all in this book. Granted The last chapter did pick up, And its going to continue into the next book. But it feels like half the book was missing lol .Just when it gets good the book is over.

OMG!! THAT ENDING...!!!!!

What a way to finish a book and keeping a reader absolutely gagging for what comes next! And I don't think this review will have quite enough exclamation points!

I'm not quite sure where to start 🙈. I mean wow! If I thought any of the other books I'm the series had kept me on my toes and guessing I was wrong! Soul of the Sentinel knocked them all waaaaaaaaaaaay out of the park! Especially as I have so many questions and sooooooo wanting to know what comes next. I'm fact I almost started the book without writing a review, ha!

Jess is such a unique and amazing character. I love her so much. And the people around her are just as amazing. Her relationship with Finn brings me to my knees. Her bond with Hannah and Milo makes me want my own sister and spirit guide. The love they have for each other defies all boundaries, its almost like they couldn't exist with out the others. And her friends are friendships every girl needs and couldn't go through life without. I especially love the blossoming relationship between Jess and Cat and also her surprising shared interests with Lucida.

There are so many highs and lows in this book that it's so hard to pick out stand out parts (apart from THAT ending of course!) I am so bloody intrigued about all that is unfolding right now, I want to know what's happening next and why its happening. How after centuries its all finally coming together now. And why Jess is the center of it all.

On that note.... I'm diving in to the next book!

Disappointing

I have followed and enjoyed this series for a long time. Waiting impatiently most of the time. They start a bit slowly but the author seamlessly brings you up to date with people and events. So why not my usual 4-5 stars? I hate cliff hangers! You edged us up to the action then Dropped us over the "tomb", literally and ended it unfinished. Now we have to wait another year to find out what is going on with Savvy, Hannah's proposal, and Jessie's new prophecy? I take it that the series is ending. It was a good fantasy (minus all the "effing F bombs that weren't necessary --get a decent thesaurus) and now I have to wait another year?

Unknown Symbols, hags and mayhem

Very much dislike that the story ended on a cliffhanger like this. Like totally uncalled for.

The rest of the story was pretty good though and I would love a story told from Hannah's viewpoint or even Milo's because Jessica is getting a little boring, even though they keep giving her new skills.

Interested to see what happens with Fiona and Savvy, a lot developed with those 2 characters.

Also how is it Hannah and Jessica have a bathroom in their room now when in the first book they had to use the bathroom down the hall, that's when Savvy walked in on Jessica showering. That didn't make any sense to me.

Anyway here I go to read book 7

Captivating

This series still has the ability to captivate you endlessly! It’s never as easy as it seems. As things progress for the Ballard sisters, more truths are revealed. Every character has an important role to play, it’s not just about the sisters, I think thats why I like it so much. There are no answers in reality, which has Jessica leaving reality to find answers, and the description for which she does that is so beautiful I can feel the nerves and anxiety as much as she does. Love it!

¶The Door That Will Not Open

Oh Emily; what have you done?
I read the trilogy and began the Tracker series. With every one of your marvelous books I have become ever more entranced, ever more entangled in this world of Durupinen and Comhnoir, of Jess and Hannah, of Finn and darling Milo, of all the inhabitants of this other place where I now reside and now don't want to leave. I willingly walked into the Rift and joined them all. And now I can't leave them. The story is not finished, yet I must wait until you release another book to close upon the truth. Emily - hurry.

Amazing

I have beenba huge fan since the beginning and this one was no different for me. I honestly am left speechless after this one and cant really express how im feeling. There were times in the book where my heart wouldnt stop racing and i could feel myself being terrified like jess was. This book was done beautifully and I'm just a little shocked on how this one left me feeling. I seriously CANNOT WAIT for the next

Page turner

I got through this in a single sitting. Just when you think there can't be any more weird stuff happening around these characters and they deserve a break...more stuff happens. It's just as well they are young, I'd be dead from exhaustion! More mysterious goings on, a prophetic sculpture, upheaval of legislation, and a bit of a cliff hanger. There is only one book left...I'm biting my nails.

After reading the first five book in the Gateway Trackers, I was already fully invested in Soul of the Sentinel, and Holmes does not disappoint. The characters mature in this installment, and while I thought it was rushed, it still did not detract from the plot.

Further, when you dive into Soul of the Sentinel, brace yourself, because once you finish this one, you must dive into its sequel and the final installment of the series, Gift of Darkness.

Another great read from the Gateway Trackers series. Fair warning, this one is a cliffhanger. I know that some people really dislike cliffhangers but it is worth the read and you will absolutely want to read book 7. Holmes is an excellent writer that is able to intertwine story lines and characters from previous books into a cohesive exciting story. Without adding any big spoilers, I love that we get a bit more of Savannah in this story! A must read!

Jess and Hannah would be forgiven for hoping that things might settle down in the Durupinen world now following another Prophecy come to pass, but they would hope too soon. An odd rune keeps showing up in Jess' world, and it quickly becomes obvious that it is significant to life as they know it. Jess' character arc continues to grow her ad a person, Durupinen, Muse, Walker and Seer as they unravel how to save Savvy and the gateways

Awesome book!

This is the 6th book in the series and I believe it held me in suspense more than any other, but that’s not to say the others didn’t. I was so caught up in reading that I didn’t realize I had come to the end, and I just gasped! So I guess you have to read this to understand what I mean.
I recommend this book and especially the whole series.

Jess and Hannah lead an effort to break down centuries of gender stereotypes and restrictions among the Durupinen culture. While this is happening, Jess is also involved in investigating some mysterious messages and symbols from the past. This book, more than any of the others, leaves us hanging and concerned about Jess and she delves into the spirit world.

love this series so much

So much is going on in this book- from Hannah’s proposal to Savvy’s unusual request, the missing Necromancers, and the missing Caomnoir that betrayed the dirupunen. And of course a cliffhanger ending after a whole book of build up! Can’t wait to read what’s next!!!

The mystery deepens

Focus on multi layered plot rather than romantic entanglements furthers story and character development. Looking forward to final installment. Good stories need a conclusion especially one that leaves a future to the readers' imagination.

I feel let down.

This ended very abruptly. Nothing resolved. No decision on whether Jess and Finn can be together . Still don't know what's up with Savy. Just didn't seem complete. Hope I don't have to wait long for the next book.

Good series, but time for it to end

I have to say I feel like I'm being strung along. I thought this was the final book only to learn, one again it was not. I loved all the previous books but felt this one was a little tedious. I hope the next book brings closure.

Best book yet!

I absolutely adore this series, and I’m crushed that the next one will be the last. These characters are so real and genuine. I’m not ready to say goodbye!

I loved that the book teased a greater mystery, and the ending killed me!

I can’t wait for the next one!
