It’s 1917, and Halifax has shipped its sons off to war. Irishman Silas Quinn, pauper street sweeper and army reject, remains behind, shunning God and society as religiously, as deservedly, as they shun him. The night he stumbles across a half-frozen prostitute, his eyes blink open, and his greater purpose is preserve and protect. A chance encounter with a military major introduces Silas to a guardian’s world. Invisible to both the woman and the town, he scours the streets for evil until a horrific event redefines the word enemy.
Life wasn’t always this beautiful for shop girl Helen Fraser. There’d been a day she was desperate enough, foolish enough, to believe a few willing nights in a brothel would cure her troubles. By some miracle, Major Jack Gordon deemed her worth saving. Wiser now, Helen knows the day is coming when an old patron will recognize her and destroy her meticulously recreated identity. What she doesn’t expect is for it to be literal. For it to be, not a john or one of the madam’s goons, but a force great enough to flatten a city and bury her alive.
Set against the backdrop of the Halifax Explosion, Beautiful in His Sight is a Christian historical romance that explores unequivocal grace and identity in Christ.
APRIL W GARDNER writes Christian historical romance with a focus on our Southeastern Native Tribes. She is also a military wife and mother of two who lives in South Texas. In no particular order, April dreams of owning a horse, learning a third language, and visiting all the national parks.
“Today, the Voice of the Holy Christ, compelling and painfully tender, drowned it all in the well of His shed blood, leaving only the reminder of a ceaseless love.”
3.5 stars. This is the first book by April Gardner that I have read and it is indeed a very interesting and fascinating book centered around Halifax, Nova Scotia explosion in 1917. In the midst of WWI, Helen, a broken woman with a past, tries her best to build a new life with innate compassion, tenderness, love, and generosity. Silas, an immigrant from Ireland, also has a broken past and a heap of guilt which have him sweeping the streets and living like a beggar when he’s a skilled woodworker. Silas is faithful, loyal, compassionate, determined, and extremely kind. The story starts out the day of the explosion and then backtracks to when Silas and Helen first meet and then returns to the day of the explosion and moves forward. Silas’ faithful and unwavering love for Helen is so beautiful and touching; his faithful and humble following of his Lord’s leading is inspiring. Silas is an unlikely hero, but a real hero he is. The themes of forgiveness, redemption, and true and abiding love are woven so intimately throughout the plot and are quite uplifting. The story, though, moved slowly for my taste and the book felt a bit long. Though it didn’t completely resonate with me, you may enjoy this historical fiction as so many other Christian fiction readers and bloggers have.
I received a copy of the book via Celebrate Lit Tours and was under no obligation to post a positive review. All comments and opinions are solely my own.
Beautiful in His Sight is another knockout story by April. I always learn fascinating history along with going for an emotional journey with her fictional characters. By the end they feel like real people--flawed, broken, yet deeply loved by God. Just like we all are. The writing is suspenseful, the romance sigh-inducing, the reflection of Christ's relationship to His bride, the church...deeply moving. I see myself in Helen... tainted, scarred, and living with shame. But Silas sees her the way Jesus sees me--beautiful, irreplaceable, worth dying for. I love the personal connection there and it made the story really special. I highly recommend this book!
These genuine characters, fast-paced plot, and fascinating historical details keep those pages turning and inspire further investigation into the facts behind the fiction!
Silas loves in a way that reflects the love of Jesus, sacrificial and unreservedly. As the hero of this story, he (and Our Savior) looks past outward appearances and circumstances to the heart of a person. Even after Helen is freed from her precarious situation, she continues to carry guilt and shame. Her inner struggles remind me that we often choose to punish ourselves by holding true freedom at an arm's length instead of embracing the gift of grace in our lives.
As always, April W. Gardner delivers a poignant and vivid story that showcases a moment in history and Biblical truths. I highly recommend this story!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and was under no obligation to post a review. The opinions expressed are my own.
This book. This hero. This heroine. Y’all. I am undone.
Before picking up Beautiful in His Sight, I had never heard of the Halifax explosion. I’m not even sure I’ve ever read a book set there before, historical or otherwise. This devastating moment in Canadian history is brought vividly and emotionally to life under April Gardner’s talented pen (or laptop, as the case may be) and touched my heart in such poignant ways. The author skillfully captures the humanity behind the history, giving faces and families and dreams and heartbeats to the devastation, making it a riveting story but so much more than one as well.
Let’s talk about Silas for a moment, shall we? Be. Still. My. Book Boyfriend Collecting. Heart. I’m still recovering from how completely Silas captured my heart. From his Irish brogue to his heart of gold to his brawny build to his steadfast pursuit of the woman he loves… there I go swooning again. Their first kiss? SWOON. His ‘all male’ reaction to Helen’s gradual affections. His passion for her that can’t be contained, first in his eyes and then in his kisses, even if they are surrounded by people. Stick me in the freezer, I’m done. But there are many more layers to Silas than a swoonilicious book boyfriend who’s close to toppling a couple heroes in my top ten. Eliza (more on her in a moment) says at one point that Silas is “A Jesus in the flesh if ever I saw one“, and she’s right. He exemplifies Jesus in his actions, his heart, his integrity and his self-sacrifice. Of course Silas is human, so the analogy doesn’t stay constant but it’s in those moments when he reflects our Savior he becomes a true hero in every sense of the word.
And Helen. Oh she has my heart. Despite the lies that life has fed her, the lies life has disguised as Truth, she is a fighter. A pure heart. A woman to be admired. Her courage more than once left me breathless, tears in my eyes, as did her ability to believe in the good of people despite having seen the worst humanity can do to each other. Eliza, a new friend as the story progresses, took me by surprise more than once (in all the best ways) and inspired me to be more aware of paths God connects ‘for such a time as this’ in my own life.
Bottom Line: Beautiful In His Sight shines a light on an aspect of WW1 that I’ve personally never heard of before, and Gardner is exceedingly skilled at taking obscure pieces of history and weaving captivating story through the embedded facts. This novel is rich and atmospheric in both historical detail and setting, with compelling characters that will grip your emotions and keep you thoroughly invested through all 744 pages. It’s not a story you will easily forget, nor will Silas or Helen or Jack or Eliza leave your heart anytime soon. A beautifully redemptive and tender tale with an unlikely but true hero – and a brave heroine who defies the odds.
(I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book)
My word, I had no idea Ms. Gardner wrote so beautifully. This was a work of art. Captivating doesn’t even begin to describe the beauty within this book.
Fascinating story set around the historic explosion disaster of 1917, Halifax, Nova Scotia. Halifax explosion article
Silas Quinn, a very poor immigrant from Ireland, had seen his share of disasters, including the death of his brother on the Titanic. But because he was charged by Lord Jack Gordon with protecting Helen Fraser, an unwilling prostitute, the life from which she was rescued, Silas risked his life trying to find her after the explosion.
Sadly, she was badly injured, under rubble, blinded by flying glass shards. Because he kept his presence unknown, she doesn’t know him, causing her some amount of fear, as much of her life was about enduring wretched men using her. How was she to know he’d give his life to spare hers when she had never known a kind touch in her life other than a brotherly pat on the head from Major Gordon?
This book was inspiring with its Christian values, the enduring love from a man who felt his life was all but over, and the hard work it took for one person from the dregs of society to find worth in herself because of the love of a good man, and from the Savior who saw her through all of life's hardships.
Except for the pretty descriptive physical longings and passionate kissing which made me a bit uncomfortable, this would have been five stars. Down to 4.25. But still and amazing story.
Loved this historical event turned into a beautifully written story! This author takes little known or forgotten tragedy and adds a storyline that pulls you in along with her characters! Never disappointed by this author! I was given a courtesy copy to review, but not required.
I've been in love with April's book ever since I first picked up her story about Totka and Copper Woman. That story had filled the place of a certain story which I had known had to exist but had not found up to that point. And I've followed April's releases ever since, eagerly devouring each new story.
This book is a massive tome, nearly twice the length of her other works. But it didn't feel like it (probably because I read it on my kindle, since I'm sure the weight of it would have reminded me of how big it is). The relationship of Helen and Silas is just so captivating, that I didn't want it to come to an end. And the setting of the Halifax Explosion provides a backdrop that is captivating in and of itself.
For readers wondering if this is the story for them, I would probably liken it to Francine River's Redeeming Love. April does not hide the darkness of the situation Helen is in or has been taken out of. And for some readers, that may be a lot to handle. But for others, it will be a wonderful story of beauty, love, and forgiveness.
I have provided an honest review after receiving an ecopy from the author.
My Thoughts on Beautiful in His Sight: Okay, first, this is an event in history I have never heard of. I don't know a lot about WWI, particularly not anything to do with Nova Scotia. History is definitely something I'm always studying though so this was a fun book for me to read for the history aspect alone.
April Gardner is a new author to me. I've enjoyed reading this first work by her. It's definitely a great one and she has a wonderful writing style. I feel that I've found a new author to follow along with and binge read when I need a new book!
The characters are amazing. So complex. The ideas behind the book are great and I love that the book has a solid basis in a historical event. I find myself wanting to read more about the Halifax Explosion now and learn more about it. Also, love the setting because I'm a tried and true Anne of Green Gables fan so anything in this area is always intriguing to me for that reason alone!
Silas is rejected from the army and that leaves him bitter. What will he do with his life now? He isn't accepted into society and he doesn't want to be. They don't like him but then again he doesn't like himself either. And he definitely doesn't like God anymore either. He has no purpose what with his goal of serving his country gone and then of course now he's an outcast because only a spy or something would not be in the war. What can he do?
When he finds a girl he almost assumed dead he finds a purpose. She's a prostitute trying to get her life together only to be left for dead. Can they help each other? What about finding God? Will He even want anything to do with them?
Lots of great complex characters to get to know. Helen has a half-sister who refuses to acknowledge her. I can see that for the time period though. Who wanted to be known as the sister of a prostitute? Instead, Helen finds help in unexpected places only for her life to be rocked yet again when the Explosion occurs.
Highly recommend this read. It has some hard topics, love, romance, and danger. But it's not a fast read. This is a slow sip coffee as you read a chapter or two a day type read. There are some great lines and examples to be taken from the story that you'll want to digest. And of course some rich history lessons as well.
I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from Celebrate Lit. All views expressed are only my honest opinion. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way. All opinions expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the FTC regulations.
April Gardner did not just create characters for us to love. She took an event and drew an entire town’s worth of people for us to care about. But I will say that Silas Quinn is now top-of-the-list best hero ever. Every other hero will now be compared to him.
The rich details and deep characters create a heart-wrenching story that comes alive. Silas and Helen are searching for something they don’t quite understand and both think they don’t deserve. After slowly losing one family member after another, Silas believes himself cursed and refuses to love again. As a former prostitute, Helen has seen only the dregs of society. Beaten down and left with no light to guide her, Helen sees God as some unobtainable object.
Through trials, near death, and incredible loss, these characters learn that God’s love is non-refundable. He loves us all, even when we do not love ourselves.
You’ll want to make sure you set aside plenty of time for reading. You don’t want to try and hurry. With so many wonderful conversations and perfect moments of character depth and realizations, it’s nice to be able to take a moment and relish the beautiful wordsmithing.
From a Christian standpoint, Beautiful in His Sight is meaningful, with a heartfelt connection to God and all that He does for us.
With so many wonderful things I could say about this book, I know I’ll still forget something. So, I’ll end here. If you enjoy Historical Fiction with a strong thread of redemption, you will love this book.
I requested a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. I was not required to leave a positive review. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.
It’s always interesting to learn more about history through a story that ‘fleshes’ out that history. I do not remember learning about the catastrophic explosion on December 6th, 1917 in the Halifax, Nova Scotia harbor. The devastation and loss of life made this maritime disaster the largest man-made explosion of the pre-atomic age. The Mont Blanc was fully loaded with munitions for the war in Europe when it was struck by another ship causing first a fire and then an explosion that leveled a large portion of the city. Curious bystanders were either immediately killed or suffered grievous injuries, many of them causing blindness due to the glass being shattered.
Our heroine, Helen, finds herself in just such a situation. The windows have blown in, the ceiling is collapsing and unable to see, she wonders if she will even survive. In all this experience, she learns that the light needs to come from the inside through a God that loves her just as she is! Will she accept His forgiveness and believe that she is worthy to be loved?
Silas Quinn has already survived one disaster, the sinking of the Titanic. At that time he felt that God was not finished with him yet. Will he some out of this one unscathed?
This book is long, with a great deal of detail. Besides the explosion, there is also prejudice, treason and physical abuse to keep the reader wondering if this could possibly end well.
I received an ARC of this book through CelebrateLit. The comments and impressions are my own.
Beautiful in His Sight is a book that shows how God redeems the experiences we think are a mistake leading us to hold onto guilt, shame or other negative thoughts in our lives. It deals with our thoughts and learning that God's love is unconditional and shows how God's grace overflows onto our lives and situations. The plot in the book is well developed and the characters are believable. April's book places you in the time period and plot of the book by giving insight into the characters thoughts and emotions. I could really relate to the truths that Helen kept telling herself. This book also deals with finding and knowing your identity in Christ. I found that I didn't want to stop reading and could have read the book in one sitting. Beautiful in His Sight is a Christian historical romance book in which the romance is present in a way that honors God without being unrealistic or unbelievable. The historical side of the book was informative and interesting to me as I never heard about the Halifax explosion. I recommend this book to readers who like historical Christian fiction novels, Christian romance novels, or anyone looking for their next good read. Gardner has written another great novel, the year is 1917 and Hallifax is at war….. The story has it’s base in the true war and the author has chosen to combine the names of two of it survivors for the heroine, Helen Fraser. Also incorporated into the story are other names of this horrible tragedy….. Silas Quinn is an army reject and cares nothing for his person or image, just sunk in despair not caring about anything until he stumbles upon Helen half frozen in a dark alley. He starts to move on but somehow human pity surfaces and he helps her instead of leaving her for dead. …..Later Helen is rescued {bought} from prostitution and begins a new life employed as a respectful lady at a small shop. Daily she sees Silas as he goes about his job as the city’s street sweeper, never knowing that he was her rescuer. She just sees an old stooped man with a limp. How he comes to rescue her again after the terrible tragedy and how their lives become entwined is indeed beautiful. This is a lovely story of how the redemption of God happens, no matter how low we have sunk in sin, God will erase the sins of the past and bring about a new life filled with love and thanksgiving. The book has well developed characters you can actually see and hear with the mind’s eyes. Gardner has done her research well for this Halifax story. Very interesting information. What a beautiful story. I was given an arc copy by the author and I am happy to leave my review.
April Gardner took a real event, the December 1917 decimation of Halifax, Nova Scotia by an explosion, and turned it into a historical fiction novel which shows how such an even affected the lives of the people in the area. She created believable characters and situations but I felt as though the plot moved very slowly at times. I am not sure what could have been done differently but the book is very long - a 9+ hours read on my Kindle, and there were times it didn’t bother me to put it down. I like a book that compels me to keep reading, Beautiful in His Sight did not do that. The story April Gardner weaves in Beautiful in His Sight is a beautiful one. A man redeeming a prostitute from her life in Slumdom. A discouraged man finding encouragement and his way back to God through helping/guarding this same young lady. This young lady finding her way to God and redemption from her past sins through temporary blindness and needing to rely on those around her, who happen to be fallen Christians on their own journey back to God. There is so much to like about the story. I will not be adding Beautiful in His Sight to my K-12 Christian school library. While tastefully done, the details of some of Helen’s life as a prostitute are not appropriate for the audience, even the high schoolers. I want to thank Celebrate Lit Tours for the complimentary e-copy of Beautiful in His Sight. This is my honest review.
Set during the time of World War I, this book caught my attention from the very first page. Helen Fraser and Silas Quinn both lack God and purpose for their lives. So when Silas happens to discover Helen, a prostitute half-frozen, things are bound to get interesting.
Helen, unable to forge a relationship with her half-sister, attempts to create some type of new life for herself thanks to Major Jack Gordon who helps establish a new identity for her. But when a terrible explosion happens, Halifax is rocked to its core and Jack Gordon dies. Helen and Silas, along with their community have to pick up the pieces.
However, he has charged Silas Quinn with protecting Helen. Silas determines to do exactly that by finding her and rescuing her from under a pile of rubble, ensuring she receives medical treatment, and even taking her to her half-sister’s home.
One of my favorite characters was Mr. Hermann. This elderly German basically blind gentleman brings a lot to the story by providing Helen a job in his shop and basically treating her like family. He demonstrated Christ’s love even when others were assaulting him because of the war.
This book was full of danger, excitement, and adventure along with hints of what could be between Silas and Helen. If you want to find out how the story ends, check it out for yourself.
I received a copy of this book for my fair and honest review.
I really enjoy reading Historical Fiction, as I feel I am learning something each time I read through a book. Beautiful in His Sight certainly taught me about a time in History that I didn't know about. I am very familiar with WWI, but I was not aware of the explosion at Halifax, Nova Scotia.
The author did a GREAT job at taking a real life event and creating a Fictional Romance story based in those times. Silas and Helen, the 2 main characters, both have deep, wounded pasts. Silas has been given the task of being caregiver to Helen as she experiences temporary blindness. Helen has a past of being a prostitute. Silas has become discouraged in life. The 2 become connected through the caregiver situation, but that develops into something more. They both find encouragement through one another and they both work at bringing their lives back to God. Silas and Helen has both become so lost in the world, that their relationship with God had not been what it should be. The bond between Silas and Helen leads them to redemption and forgiveness and a wonderful relationship with God and each other.
April W. Gardner is a "new to me" author, but I can guarantee, this won't be the only book of hers I read. April W. Gardner has a really great writing style that brings the reader in and captures their attention. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to reading many more by April W. Gardner! FANTASTIC BOOK!
"Beautiful In His Sight" by April W. Gardner is a book that once I starting reading it seemed long . It was 9 hours on the kindle but I keep reading to the end and so glad I did. It is really an emotional journey with characters that are just like us, human and have many faults and see themselves damaged and unworthy of being loved. This novel is about a prostitute and what happens when she is found half frozen and rescue.
This book pulled at my heartstrings more than once. At one point in the book I was thinking I don't like that this happened to a character but then I thought, isn't this just like what we do in real life, we think that we know more than God and we think we can do things better than what what He has planned for our lives. Yes, I know this this book is fiction but I believe sometimes God used fictional characters to bring truth to us . It is based on a real event, the December 1917 decimation of Halifax, Nova Scotia by an explosion, so it had to have real facts included into the story such as deaths and etc.
I recommend this beautiful story to all but you might need to have tissues handy and be prepared to shed a few tears if you are a emotional reader.
This novel shows that we all are loved by Jesus and we are not defined by our worth but by His.
I was given a complimentary copy by the author and Celebrate Lit. These opinions are my own.
This has been an emotional journey with characters that will never be forgotten. Helen is a wonderful character who has had a hard life. Her life seemed to be over until someone finds her laying on the ground with life threatening injuries. The compassion Silas shows Helen is far beyond what I could imagine. His willingness to help her was heartfelt and I feel that he had taken on a task only God could have ordained.
The history that the author gives us was very intriguing. It made the story more realistic and I learned things about a war I never knew. The explosion that wipes out everything in its path was hard to read. I loved how Silas never gave up finding Helen and their time together is well written. I really enjoyed reading that Silas had been a survivor of the Titanic. He does go through a lot in the story which gives a lesson on perseverance. His determination was overwhelming and I loved seeing this man become someone who finally believed in himself.
Helen has a lot going for her as well. Being in the explosion has changed her life forever. her injuries were serious and I liked how the author used it to grow her spiritually. The story is filled with faith and encouragement. The story brings us forgiveness, redemption and healing.
I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
One of the things that I love about historical fiction books is that you learn something as you read. I had not heard of the Halifax explosion. I actually went and researched it myself. It was a piece of history that seems to have been forgotten. This is the first book that I have read by this author. It will not be the last. This story is so powerfully packed with God's word and love for us that it will remind you that we ARE beautiful in HIS site. We are beautiful because we are made in his image. The author has done a great job at creating real feeling characters. Ones that have had a hard time getting over their pasts and hurts. Characters that we can relate to. She has written a wonderful story that you will want to read again. Silas is charged with caring for Helen. He wants to do it correctly. He will hit many twists and turns as they go along. Helen. She has tried to change her identity from who she once was. When her caretaker dies, what will happen? I do suggest this book for your enjoyment. Blogger note: This book also deals with prejudice treason and physical abuse. However it is done tastefully and respectfully.
I received a copy of this book through the Celebrate Lit Blogging program. All thoughts are my own.
What I think you should know: Beautiful In His Sight is a historical fiction novel that is based around the true life events that occurred during 1917 in Halifax, Nova Scotia when a ship exploded, whipping out part of the town and killing over 2,000 people. The first chapter gives you a glimpse of the story, only to whisk you back in time two months bring the backstory to life.
What you might want to know: Helen of Slumdum is no more after being rescued and being given the opportunity to start her life over by Major Jack Gordon, however she is still haunted mentally and physically by her time in a brothel.
What I enjoyed most about this book: Silas Quinn, a survivor of the Titanic needs to learn to forgive himself, he is such a great character and may be my favorite in the book. Silas is used to show now matter how insignificant your job is you have value for being yourself. I really enjoyed the way that April W. Gardner , the author wove the story filled with spies, possible German traitors, and mysteries, she kept me intrigued and guessing until the end of the story.
Who will enjoy this book ( just to name a few): Fans of Historical Fiction Fans of Suspense
I received a complimentary copy for this book from Celebrate Lit, this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.
Author April W. Gardner has written an historical Christian romance with Beautiful in His Sight. Set in 1917 Halifax, Scotia it centers around the Halifax Explosion. Before reading this book, I did not know about this WWI tragedy.
This is the first book I have read by Ms. Gardner. For me the beginning was a bit muddled and slow. It took quite a few pages for me to become interested. The characters were nice but not well defined. I was left with questions on many of them.
The love of Helen and Silas is sweetly told in this gritty tale of war, forgiveness, deceit, redemption, love, and trust. The author has filled it with history, inspiration, mystery, and twists. The second part of the book was much better for me. After that it became a page turner.
This book was well researched. There is so much history to be gleaned just by reading it. The author planned and organized it well. It is a rather long book, but don’t give up on it. It is worth reading.
I would recommend this to fans of WW1 fiction, historical fiction, and Christian fiction. I rated it a 4 out of 5 stars. A copy was provided by Celebrate Lit but these are my honest thoughts.
This book was so painful and so beautiful all at the same time. Completely surprised with a Canadian backdrop, and the Halifax Explosion, which I had never heard of, I settled in for a deep, emotional read. Both Silas and Helen were so real and relatable in the prison of their past and finding their identity alone in that. The romance and thread of faith was woven together just perfectly. This book is one you definitely want to take your time reading because there is just so much depth of feeling and language found within. The history was on point and yet the relevance of the topic of feeling less than worthy was so on point as well. The truth that finding your identity in Christ shows you the true natural beauty we all exude regardless of our past was just a beautiful one to watch our characters realize and own. I recommend this one for the historical fiction reader, inspirational reader, or those looking for a deep, emotional read.
I received a complimentary copy of this book, and all opinions given are entirely my own.
This book was such a wonderful way to spend my time! I was hooked from page one! I couldn't wait to curl up, book and tea ready, to journey with Silas and Helen as they navigated their love story through the messy historical events that were the backdrop of Beautiful in His Sight.
April Gardner has such a beautiful writing style that reading her novel is as delightful as enjoying a work of art. The pace is not forced as it dances with the energy of tragic events and slows down enough to pull the reader into the hearts and minds of the main characters. I almost had a hard time pacing myself as I couldn't put the book down but didn't want it to end.
Gardner's characters are rich and vibrant with their own tragic backstories that keep you rooting for the underdog. The book is historically flavorful and emotionally poignant. It reminded me of Francine River's Redeeming Love. I definitely recommend reading Beautiful in His Sight to anyone who wants a reminder of love's amazing power.
This novel is both heart wrenching and rewarding. I don’t want to give away any of the story because the beauty of an April Gardner book is the adventure within the pages. I thought the story and character development held the length the novel very well. The author is a wordsmith and exceedingly creative: the dialogue was spot on- authentic and realistic, her use of flashbacks was well placed and added necessary history to the story, and the tale never played out how I expected. I loved all the conflict and the twists and turns. The overall message was beautiful -seeing others and being seen. Silas was a swoon worthy hero and had many Christlike qualities that every woman should look for in a man.
I received an advanced copy from the author. This review is my honest opinion.
This was a book with an uncertain beginning and an at-times tedious end, but with plenty of magic in the middle! I grew fond of the main characters, Helen and Silas, and their various struggles in life, in mind, and in spirit. I particularly enjoyed the way the writer wrote from Silas’ point of view, with his thought patterns and language coming through naturally. There was a lot of sensitive, nuanced writing, which I enjoyed. Unfortunately, some of the end parts dragged on and I found myself wanting to skip pages. But there enough interest to keep me going and I’m glad I finished it. I received a free copy of this book by signing up for the writer’s newsletter as part of a book giveaway. I was under no obligation to write this review. The opinions are all my own.
I read all of April Gardner's "Creek Country Saga" books and became a fan years ago for several reasons. She makes the historical content so intriguing I have been inspired by all of her books to do additional research and reading about the event(s). It is amazing how well she weaves her story and characters around a real life occurrence and this book did NOT disappoint! I'd never heard of the "Halifax Explosion" until I read this book. Wow, I absolutely loved it. I just ordered an additional copy for my mom. History, romance, and lots of drama wrapped up with heavenly hope, love and blessings. April Gardner, you told a phenomenal story and did it very well. A must anytime read!!!
I don’t know how author April Gardner writes as she does so I’ve decided just to go along for the ride. The way she weaves so much history into her stories, giving them substance while still keeping them spell binding, is an art that I appreciate. And this story is no different.
Well developed characters who are so “real” with fears and flaws, yet God in His grace and mercy is there to love people and to change lives. We see forgiveness and redemption beautifully written.
Another great story by Gardner, I highly recommend you read it.
I received a complimentary copy of this book but was not required to leave a review.
Exquisitely written, powerful and deeply moving. Beautiful in His Sight is an extraordinary story brought to life by an author with extraordinary talent and expertise. A novel filled with characters crafted with exceptional depth living, loving and experiencing life during a time of astounding tragedy and heroism. You’ll be captivated this unforgettable story and mesmerized as it unfolds page after memorable page. Stunning, soothing, surprising and very touching. I highly recommend this one – truly one of the best I’ve read!

This is an interesting story, combining some history with fiction. I had never heard about the explosion on December 6, 1917 in Halifax, Nova Scotia before. That must have been horrific for those impacted by it. It was interesting how Silas and Helen met, although she had no memory of it as she was left for dead outside the brothel. Silas found her and made sure she was tended to. I loved how he let the madam know exactly what he thought of her, and had the other girls helping Helen. Silas and Helen have both been through a lot of bad times, but with help Helen was able to leave the brothel and find work in a hardware store. Unfortunately there were 2 horrible men looking for her, one was a coward and the other was a nasty piece of work. It was interesting seeing some of the characters bond and help each other recover and enjoyed seeing the 2 jerks get their comeuppance. There is a strong thread of redemption throughout the book.
This exquisite historical romance is set in 1917 Halifax before, during, and after the devastating explosion that ruined the city and sent shock waves around an already terrorized and war torn world. There are themes of kindness, love, forgiveness, hope, and redemption woven into the very core of this story. The story is beautifully written filled with believable characters and rich historical detail that brought the era and story to life.
I found myself enjoying this story more than I originally thought I was. It is well worth that read, and I recommend it.
