The Recovery

Rate this book
Safety - and reunification - appears close on the horizon for our survivors, but as the Solar Crash fades, its effects somehow grow even more potent...

***

When a CME that dwarfs the Carrington Event engulfs the world, Len - a businessman with next to zero survival training and experience - sets off to find his wife and child. Emerging out of the heart of Chicago, he will face dangers of all types and experience both the heights and depths of humanity. His survival depends solely on his ability to learn on the fly in this twisted new hellscape of a world.

From the #1 best-selling post-apocalyptic author Mike Kraus and author E.S. Richards comes a fresh new take on the EMP/CME story. With characters that are learning how to survive as they go - and finding some unlikely teachers along the way - they represent the true "everyday person" who isn't a hardcore prepper or survivalist, something unique and exciting in this genre.

Solar Crash is a 6-part series that will be published monthly.

The Recovery - a review by Rosemary Kenny

Book 4, (of 6) in the Solar Crash, A Post-Apocalyptic Survival Thriller series, which will conclude with part 6 in August, is The Recovery. Co-author Mike Kraus is so prolific and expert in this genre I honestly don't know how he ever gets any relief with hobbies or family time, let alone sleep and the storylines are satisfyingly entwined, in this pairing with author E S Richards, to produce a marvellous tale of post apocalyptic America.

MC Len, must reluctantly leave the presumed safety of Chicago. He travels desperately unprepared - and inexperienced in survivalism - across country hoping against hope to be reunited with his wife Amy and young son James, before it's too late.

Can Len overcome his fears and ignorance to survive the perils of the mission to find his loved ones?
What happens to the team of research scientists marooned off the coast of Australia?
Are Amy and James still alive - and how is the family reunited - and where?

Make sure you buy all four (so far) books in this outstanding series, to benefit from the story to date, prior to the thrilling conclusion coming to a bookstore near you in August 2019...then get ready for the post-apocalyptic adventure of a lifetime!

Good but

Good but too darn short. The characters are believable and interesting. The challenges each group overcomes as they do their best to survive.

More like 2.5 stars for this one. So many coincidences that it's getting ridiculous.

Len, et al, have made it to South Haven to discover Amy and James are gone, gasp! But Justin and Max are going to stay at Amy's house, with Aubrey. I didn't like this much, as Aubrey has developed a relationship with Len, and he's going to leave this traumatized pre-teen with Justin and Max, but he'll HOPEFULLY one day be back for her. Ugh! But, see, Len HAS to get to his son, and apparently, no needy little girl is going to slow him down. She's not even mentioned much later, and not at all in book 5. So, why was she brought in, at all?

Amy and James separate from Giles, because he went to look for his parents, in Grand Rapids, and she's still headed to her friends home. On the way they encounter a group of people who help them out, though of course THIS time Amy doesn't want to trust ANYBODY. Sigh... she finds out Giles may well have been walking into gang territory and seriously mourns for this guy and goes into a depression. Kill me now. A guy she's known for like 72 hours? Granted he should have been called Saint Giles, but still. Really?

In another strange coincidence Len and Harrison stay at the same resort Amy, James, and Giles stayed at, and run into the same gang members. Say it isn't so! Later they also meet up with the same group of people who had helped Amy and James. Wow!

Dixon makes it back to the White House just in time for a "terrorist attack" which any idiot can figure out was an inside job, but he and his fellow soldiers go looking for a ghost anyway. But THEN, this soldier decides to break rank and find his girlfriend, Mary, who he's been obsessing about for 3 books. So, we suddenly see the man behind the uniform.

Andy and boat crew decide to leave the ship and take the life raft to shore, because they can't raise the anchor. But, no worries, they should make it home in 5-7 days. Um, 300 miles of rowing, in the ocean, with no GPS? Because they wouldn't have a blow torch or anything to sever the anchor, right? They have the ability to sail, a sail to put in place, but are NOT smart enough to figure out how to sever the anchor? And, as a matter of necessity, the boat has NO way to manually raise the anchor? I'm at a loss here folks!

Like the other books in the series, this is very short. There is some decent progress in the Len/Harrison and Amy/James stories. There is some progress on the DC group, but I have no idea what the connection is for the guys on the boat. That group seems pretty chill for being stranded at sea.

Riveting

Riveting, suspensful but not over the top. A realistic storyline. I enjoy all of this authors works and am now a follower.
